OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of paresthesia during lumbar puncture performed with the patient in different positions.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A single-blind prospective study of patients scheduled for elective cesarean section, randomized to 3 groups. In group 1 patients were seated in the direction of the long axis of the table, with heels resting on the table. In group 2 they were seated perpendicular to the long axis of the table, with legs hanging from the table. In group 3 they were in left lateral decubitus position. Lumbar punctures were performed with a 27-gauge Whitacre needle

Labiomandibular paresthesia after root canal treatment is an accident that is still too frequent despite the development of new endodontic techniques. The aim of this anatomical and clinical study is to advance the understanding of how accidents occur so as to avoid them. This anatomical study made it possible to determine the variability of proximity of the apex of the tooth root to the mandibular bundle, as well as the relationship between the nerve and its satellite artery, and to understand how endodontic filling material spreads into the cancellous bone. The clinical study, which included

To assess the effects of herpetic infection on somatic sensations, herpes simplex virus type-1 was inoculated into the unilateral hind paw of the rat and its behavioral responses to noxious pressure and tactile stimulation were examined. Herpetic infection significantly increased the nociceptive threshold of the treated hind paw with a delay around 4 days. The increase in the nociceptive threshold continued at least until post-inoculation day 21 and was larger at night than in the morning. Any alterations in tactile responses were not observed during this period. Herpetic DNA was detected by p

BACKGROUND: Operative management of clavicle fractures is increasingly common. In the context of explaining the risks and benefits of surgery, understanding the impact of incisional numbness as it relates to the patient experience is key to shared decision making. This study aims to determine the prevalence, extent, and recovery of sensory changes associated with supraclavicular nerve injury after open reduction and plate internal fixation of middle or lateral clavicle shaft fractures.
METHODS: Eighty-six patients were identified retrospectively and completed a patient experience survey asses

Guillain-Barré syndrome is an acute demyelinating disease which presents in a classic form with muscular weakness and the lack of reflexes. There are multiple variations and atypical forms of the disease, being facial diplegia with paresthesia one of them. Also, the absence of reflexes in this syndrome is typical but not constant, since 10% of patients present reflexes. We describe a case of atypical presentation with bilateral facial palsy, paresthesia, brisk reflexes and weakness in the lower limbs in a 33 year old woman.

Lip paresthesia during mandibular molar orthodontic distalization is rare. When it occurs, it is often related to excessive dimensions of the mandibular second molar roots. In this clinical report, we describe a patient who developed lip paresthesia during orthodontic treatment. The paresthesia was relieved by immediate interruption of the forces applied to the mandibular second molars and pharmacologic therapy. Before fixed orthodontic treatment proceeds in patients with large tooth roots, it is important to diagnose the relationship between the roots and the mandibular canal to prevent nerve

Concurrent lesions in the brain and spinal cord, which can produce similar symptoms are truly confusing situations. Herein, we report on a 56-year-old woman who suffered from an intermittent radicular pain and paresthesia in her right upper limb and mild headache. Imaging showed a cervical vertebral disc herniation and a small round tumor of the somatosensory cortex with clear border, considered as a little meningioma, which could be followed. To deal with these two concurrent lesions, we faced a challenging condition.

Neural damage leads to a transient or persistent alteration, depending on the severity or type of injury sustained. During the last decade, many investigators reported on paresthesia related to dental implants. In this case report, the patient had presented repeatedly with swelling and suppuration, showing typical signs of peri-implantitis. In addition, the implant was placed in proximity to the mental foramen and possibly had traumatized the mental nerve because the patient had had an altered sensation on his left side for the past 4.5 years. After removal of the implant, a significant dimini

Lingual nerve anesthesia, paresthesia, and dysesthesia are possible side effects of third molar extraction. These unwanted complications are frequently disturbing to both the patient and practitioner. The incidence of lingual nerve damage following third molar surgery is more frequent than once thought. Six hundred questionnaires were sent to randomly selected Fellows of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in 50 states to determine the parameters surrounding this phenomenon. Of the 452 respondents, 76.05% reported having had patients with lingual anesthesia, dysesthesia

The incidence of paresthesia following the extraction of 455 mandibular impacted wisdom teeth is evaluated. No permanent paresthesia to the third branch of the trigeminal nerve is noted and no lingual paresthesia. A temporary dyesthesia of the inferior dental nerve is noted for three patients, with a complete return of integrity after six weeks. We have noted an incidence of temporary paresthesia of 3/455 (0.66 per cent) per tooth.

Lingual paresthesia following the surgical placement of implants does not occur frequently. When it does occur, a serious problem may result for the practitioner, especially if the patient has not been informed of the risk before surgery. This report emphasizes the importance of practitioner experience and competence. It also addresses the need for knowledge of the course of the lingual nerve and preoperative planning of implant placement in the mandible.

Acoustic neuromas are benign neoplasms of the brain composed of Schwann cells, arising most commonly from the nerve sheath of the vestibular division of the VIII cranial nerve. They usually manifest as unilateral hearing loss, tinnitus, and unsteadiness. Some patients may present atypically with symptoms like orofacial pain, hemifacial numbness, sudden onset hearing loss, or trigeminal neuralgia. Here we report an interesting case of acoustic neuroma in which the patient presented with unilateral facial numbness and tooth pain. Persistent atypical symptoms should always raise clinical suspicio

The lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve (LACN) is the sensory branch of the musculocutaneous nerve and usually innervates the lateral aspect of the forearm. Isolated lesions are rare, of varied etiology and generally underdiagnosed. We present a retrospective descriptive study of electromyography performed at the General University Hospital of Castellón in the last 20 years with isolated NCAL lesion. We identified 11 cases (8 men and 3 women), average age 44 years (15-73 years). 73% were referred from traumatology. Only one patient was correctly guided in the application. 63.6% of cases noted

BACKGROUND: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is the broad term used to describe a number of related acute autoimmune neuropathies, which together form a continuous spectrum of variable and overlapping syndromes. Bifacial weakness with paresthesias (BFP) is a rare variant of GBS, characterized by isolated facial diplegia in the absence of ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, or limb weakness, and it is usually associated with distal limb paresthesias.
CASE DESCRIPTION: An 8-year-old boy was brought to our attention; because 5 days before coming to the hospital, he noticed he could no longer smile. Bilateral

This is the second of a two-part series addressing symptoms, evaluation, and treatment of load carriage- related paresthesias. Part 1 addressed rucksack palsy and digitalgia paresthetica; here, meralgia paresthetica (MP) is discussed. MP is a mononeuropathy involving the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). MP has been reported in load carriage situations where the LFCN was compressed by rucksack hipbelts, pistol belts, parachute harnesses, and body armor. In the US military, the rate of MP is 6.2 cases/10,000 personyears. Military Servicewomen have higher rates than Servicemen, and rates i

A 23-year-old female patient reported with the chief complaint of swelling on the lower left posterior teeth region of the jaw and paresthesia of left lower lip of 6 months of duration. On the basis of clinical findings and conventional radiographic features, odontogenic tumor or cyst was suspected. Advanced imaging i.e. CT scan, Denta Scan, MRI further provided the exact nature, extent and location of the lesion and later on by histopathological examination, it was diagnosed as an intraosseous schwannoma of the mandible. In this clinicopathologic conference section, elaborate differential dia

To study the reasons for referral to electrodiagnostic evaluation, 490 patients referred for electrodiagnostic evaluation to two laboratories (UNIFESP and UNEF) answered the following question: "What was the reason that brought you to look for a physician and that led him to ask this examination?" Paresthesia and/or pain were answered as the main reason by 175 of them (26% UNIFESP and 40% UNEF). The electromyographical examinations were normal in 30.8% and 35.3% and involvement of the median nerve at the wrist was detected in 5 9% and 51.5% of them. Nocturnal symptoms and paresthesia were comm
