Traumatic Brain Injury in Patient with Biparietal Thinning.

A 77-year-old man presented with progressive consciousness disturbance, presumably caused by a backward fall. Head computed tomography findings showed a large intracerebral hemorrhage in the left parietal lobe. Radiated fractures with an oval depression of the bilateral parietal bone crossing the midline were noted. Surgical evacuation of the hemorrhage was performed via a left-sided parietal craniotomy, during which fragments from the fracture with eggshell-like thinning were noted. Biparietal thinning is an uncommon condition noted in radiological findings of a symmetrical oval depression of

Management of Penetrating Brain Injury Caused by a Nail Gun: Three Case Reports and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Penetrating brain injury (PBI) caused by a nail gun is an extremely rare neurosurgical emergency that poses a challenge for neurosurgeons because of its rarity and complexity. CASE DESCRIPTION: Here we present 3 cases of PBI caused by a nail gun. In the first case, the nail entered through the right parietal bone and lodged in the right parietal lobe and basal ganglia. In the second case, the nail entered through the right occipital bone and lodged in the right occipital lobe. In the third case, the nail entered through the right parietal bone and lodged in the right frontal and p

Enlarged parietal foramina: a review of genetics, prognosis, radiology, and treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Enlarged parietal foramina are variable ossification defects in the parietal bones that present as symmetric radiolucencies on skull radiographs. In contrast to the normal small parietal foramina, enlarged parietal foramina are a hereditary condition and genes associated with it have been identified. METHODS: A literature review was performed to discuss the many known findings related to enlarged parietal foramina. CONCLUSIONS: Even though they remain asymptomatic in the majority of cases, they may be associated with other pathologies and occasionally become symptomatic. This a

Anomalous parietal suture mimicking skull fracture.

Anomalous sutures of the parietal bone are exceedingly rare events. We present the case of a child admitted to the hospital after a near-drowning incident who subsequently expired. He was diagnosed with a parietal skull fracture by computed tomography scan before death. This was found to be an anomalous suture by postmortem histologic examination. Division of the parietal bone is an unusual event with anomalous sutures, which can be mistaken for fractures on radiographic or postmortem examination. Although fractures are much more common, it is prudent to evaluate all fractures and/or fracture-

Embryonic requirements for Tcf12 in the development of the mouse coronal suture.

A major feature of Saethre-Chotzen syndrome is coronal craniosynostosis, the fusion of the frontal and parietal bones at the coronal suture. It is caused by heterozygous loss-of-function mutations in either of the bHLH transcription factors TWIST1 and TCF12. Although compound heterozygous Tcf12; Twist1 mice display severe coronal synostosis, the individual role of Tcf12 had remained unexplored. Here, we show that Tcf12 controls several key processes in calvarial development, including the rate of frontal and parietal bone growth, and the boundary between sutural and osteogenic cells. Genetic a

Biparietal osteodystrophy in an 86-year-old woman: An incidental finding following minor head trauma.

Biparietal osteodystrophy (bilateral parietal bone thinning) is a rare but well-documented phenomenon characterized by symmetric thinning of the parietal bones of the skull. It predominantly affects older adults, particularly women. We report the case of an 86-year-old woman who was incidentally diagnosed with this condition after a minor head injury. She presented with a low-impact fall and underwent neuroimaging to exclude intracranial hemorrhage. Computed tomography (CT) of the head revealed bilateral concave thinning of the parietal bones with an intact inner table, and no acute fracture o

Craniosynostosis: Quantifying Differences in Skull Architecture.

ObjectiveCraniosynostosis, a condition marked by the premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures, exhibits diverse phenotypes. This study aims to advance the understanding of these phenotypes beyond the conventional 2-dimensional analysis by focusing on identifying indicators of increased intracranial pressure (ICP) such as bony thinning or irregularities in skull morphology.MethodsA retrospective review was conducted for all pediatric patients with midline craniosynostosis who presented to our tertiary academic center for evaluation. Control patients were carefully selected to match for a

Repair of a large congenital frontal bone defect with autologous exchange cranioplasty.

The authors report the case of a large idiopathic frontal bone defect and concomitant sagittal synostosis corrected by autologous exchange cranioplasty by using a corticocancellous bone graft and cranial vault expansion. An otherwise healthy, developmentally normal 6-year-old girl presented to our clinic with a large frontal bone defect. The osseous defect was midline and inferior to the coronal sutures, and the underlying dura was slightly tense. She had no signs or symptoms of increased intracranial pressure, and her head circumference and cephalic index were normal. Imaging demonstrated fus

The Bmp pathway in skull vault development.

The Bmp pathway is of critical importance in the development of the skull vault. Analysis of gain and loss of function phenotypes of Bmp pathway effectors, particularly Msx genes, has shown that the Bmp pathway functions in the growth of both mesodermal and neural crest-derived calvarial bones. It is required for the development of the frontal and parietal bones during the interval between the initial osteogenic mesenchymal condensations at E12.5 to the apposition of the paired frontal and parietal bones at E18.5. During postnatal development, forced expression of the Bmp inhibitor, noggin, ma

Exchange Cranioplasty Using Bioabsorbable Hydroxyapatite and Collagen Complex After Removal of an Extensive Frontal Bone Tumor in an Infant.

BACKGROUND: Forehead reconstruction is challenging. Reconstruction of the innate curvature of the forehead is difficult, and the forehead is an esthetically important part of the face. Although synthetic implants and autologous split bone grafts are useful, these cannot be used in infants. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 4-month-old girl was presented with a right frontal bone Ewing sarcoma. The tumor was removed, and the defect was reconstructed with an autologous contralateral parietal bone graft. The parietal bone defect was repaired with a bioabsorbable hydroxyapatite and collagen complex. Good recon

Parietal intradiploic arachnoid diverticulum: A rare delayed complication of endoscopic third ventriculostomy.

A postoperative intradiploic arachnoid diverticulum secondary to endoscopic third ventriculostomy is an extremely rare occurrence. It has a varied clinical presentation and is caused by the insinuation of the arachnoid through the dural rent into the intradiploic compartment following the procedure. This case report describes an incidentally diagnosed right parietal intradiploic arachnoid diverticulum as a complication of endoscopic third ventriculostomy. Skull radiography revealed an expansion of the right parietal bone with an intact outer table. Non-contrast computed tomography showed a wel

The brain and the braincase: a spatial analysis on the midsagittal profile in adult humans.

The spatial relationships between brain and braincase represent a major topic in surgery and evolutionary neuroanatomy. In paleoneurology, neurocranial landmarks are often used as references for brain areas. In this study, we analyze the variation and covariation of midsagittal brain and skull coordinates in a sample of adult modern humans in order to demonstrate spatial associations between hard and soft tissues. The correlation between parietal lobe size and parietal bone size is very low, and there is a marked individual variation. The distances between lobes and bones are partially influen

Extensive cranioplasty for sagittal synostosis in young children by preserving cranial bone flaps adhered to the dura mater.

This study aimed to evaluate extensive cranioplasty involving the frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal bones without removing the floating bone flaps in the treatment of sagittal synostosis. Sixty-three children with sagittal synostosis, aged 5 months to 3 years, were included in the study. The frontal bone flap was removed using an air drill. The occipital and bilateral temporal bone flaps were cut open but not detached from the dura mater or fixed to produce floating bone flaps. The skull bone was cut into palisade-like structures. Brain compression from both sides and the base of the

The effect of glucocorticoids on osteoblast function. The effect of corticosterone on osteoblast expression of beta 1 integrins.

Prolonged treatment with glucocorticoids is known to produce osteoporosis, which is characterized by a decrease in bone mass. Therefore, we studied the effect of glucocorticoids on the formation of bone and on the expression of beta 1 integrins in a mineralizing organ culture of fetal rat parietal bone. Integrins are a family of integral membrane glycoproteins that mediate the adhesion of cells to extracellular matrix macromolecules and affect the growth and differentiation of cells. In situ hybridization with a 32P-labeled beta 1 integrin cDNA probe was performed on parietal bone, treated wit

[A case of congenital dermal sinus in the parietal region (author's transl)].

A congenital dermal sinus at the midline of the parietal region, which extends into the falx, is relatively rare. The following case is illustrative. A 3-year-old girl was noticed by her parents to have tumor at the midline of the parietal region without other disturbances and complaints. This girl had the normal mental and motor development, and was admitted to our clinic for cosmetic surgery. A round, elastic soft tumor, roughly 1x1x1 cm in diameter, was located at the midline of the parietal region. This tumor had a port wine cutaneous discoloration and an absence of normal hair growth in t

Effect of reciprocal headgear forces on the calvarium: A finite element study.

INTRODUCTION: Orthopedic appliances continue to be used for various sagittal, vertical, and transverse corrections of the maxilla. Although cranial growth can continue to adulthood, no study has drawn attention to the effects of headgear forces on the calvarium, in which anchorage is taken. This study focused on the different biomechanical responses on the calvarium of young children wearing a high-pull headgear of varying forces, using a 3-dimensional finite element analysis and the possible implications of such changes on the human skull. METHODS: A 3-dimensional finite element model of a 9

Reduced life span of the osteoclast in osteopetrotic (mi and midi) mice.

Osteoclasts were enumerated on the parietal bones of mice carrying combinations of alleles (mi, midi and +) at the microphthalmic locus. Homozygous mutants at this locus show varying degrees of osteopetrosis due to defective bone resorption. As the severity of the bone resorption defect increased across the genotypes, there was an increase in the total number of osteoclasts and also an increase in the proportion of uninucleate osteoclasts. In parietal bones incubated for 24 h with parathyroid hormone (PTH) there was no significant difference between osteopetrotic and normal bones in terms of t

Multiple primary cranial Ewing's sarcoma in adulthood: case report.

OBJECTIVE: Ewing's sarcoma is a malignant bone tumor occurring most frequently in the long bones and flat bones as a solitary lesion during the first 2 decades of life. Ewing's sarcoma and peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor have recently been considered to be the same entity because of histological and molecular similarities. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 25-year-old man presented with swelling in the right parietal region. Magnetic resonance imaging scans showed 2 mixed intense mass lesions in the right parietal and left frontal areas with heterogeneous gadolinium enhancement. A computed
