Parietal and occipital lobe contributions to perception of straight ahead orientation.

OBJECTIVES: Several studies have investigated how peripheral stimulation affects the perception of body orientation in healthy subjects. The studies showed that opposing stimulation of two different input modalities can cancel out, leaving perception of body orientation unchanged. It was ascertained whether a comparable phenomenon could be found in brain damaged patients with two distinct disorders which individually lead to opposing shifts of the perceived midline. METHODS: The visual subjective straight ahead was measured in patients with pure neglect, pure hemianopia, or a combination of n

[Central neurocytoma of the right parietal and occipital lobe. Case report].

Central neurocytoma is a rare tumour of the CNS. It typically occurs in intraventricular location in young adults. The authors describe central neurocytoma in a 17-year-old woman, which was situated unusually for this type of tumour in the brain parenchyma. In this paper radiological and histopathological picture is presented.

[A case of pure agraphia due to left parietal lobe infarction].

We reported a case of a 63-year-old right handed man with pure agraphia due to the left parietal lobe infarction. The characteristics of agraphia in the patient were as follows. 1) The written letters were generally recognizable and well formed. 2) He succeeded in pointing to single Kana letter named by the examiner from the Japanese syllabary, but missed in pointing to Kana words. 3) Further, it took more time for the patient to point to even single Kana letter than for the control. 4) Most errors in Kana writing was substitution. Errors in Kanji writing are partial lacking or no response. Bu

Posterior Alien Hand Syndrome from Acute Ischemic Left Parietal Lobe Infarction.

Alien hand syndrome (AHS) is defined as an involuntary goal-directed movement of the hand as if acting on its own will, or as being under the control of someone else. Moreover, the affected hand typically does not show any signs of weakness or convulsive movement. The cause of AHS is associated with an insult to the brain from various conditions such as stroke, trauma, tumor, aneurysm, neurosurgical intervention, infection, and degenerative brain diseases. We hereby illustrate a case of a patient with chronic atrial dysrhythmia whose oral anticoagulation therapy was placed on hold by his gastr

Giant parietal lobe infantile gliosarcoma in a 5-year-old child.

The relative frequency of pediatric gliosarcoma (GSM) is 1.9% among glioblastomas and 0.5% among pediatric central nervous system tumors. A 5-year-old female child came to us with history of fever and loss of appetite since 2 weeks and right sided weakness since 4 days. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a large heterogeneously enhancing space occupying lesion in the left parieto-occipital region. A parieto-occipital craniotomy with radical excision of tumor was performed. The patient was given adjuvant therapy following surgery and survived until 9 months following surgery. The etiopathogenesi

Dysfunctional role of parietal lobe during self-face recognition in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Anomalous sense of self is central to schizophrenia yet difficult to demonstrate empirically. The present study examined the effective neural network connectivity underlying self-face recognition in patients with schizophrenia (SZ) using [15O]H2O Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Structural Equation Modeling. METHODS: Eight SZ and eight age-matched healthy controls (CO) underwent six consecutive [15O]H2O PET scans during self-face (SF) and famous face (FF) recognition blocks, each of which was repeated three times. RESULTS: There were no behavioral performance differences be

Impaired visual sensitivity within the ipsilesional hemifield following parietal lobe damage.

The parietal cortex is considered to be part of a network of brain areas that modulates competitive interactions between targets and irrelevant distracters in early visual cortex, however there is currently little causal evidence to support this in human observers. It is also unclear as to whether parietal influences on visual perception in humans are limited to the contralesional hemispace or whether a unilateral lesion affects visual sensitivity bilaterally. Here we examined visual sensitivity in two patients with spatial neglect and extinction arising primarily from left-parietal damage. We

Parietal Lobe Epilepsy Associated With 2q13 Duplication: Expanding the Neurogenetic Spectrum.

Copy number variations (CNVs) involving the 2q13 region have been associated with a wide range of phenotypes, including developmental delay, dysmorphic features, hypotonia, and congenital heart defects. However, parietal lobe epilepsy has not yet been reported in association with 2q13 duplication. We describe the case of a 20-year-old woman with a duplication of the 2q13 region identified during childhood, who later presented with recurrent, brief episodes of right upper limb paresthesia spreading to other limbs, followed by transient pain. Her past medical history included dyspraxia, polycyst

Inhibition of the inferior parietal lobe triggers state-dependent network adaptations.

The human brain comprises large-scale networks that flexibly interact to support diverse cognitive functions and adapt to variability in daily life. The inferior parietal lobe (IPL) is a hub of multiple brain networks that sustain various cognitive domains. It remains unclear how networks respond to acute regional perturbations to maintain normal function. To provoke network-level adaptive responses to local inhibition, we combined offline transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over left or right IPL with neuroimaging during attention, semantic and social cognition tasks, and rest. Across tas

Unilateral posterior parietal lobe lesions disrupt kinaesthetic representation of forearm orientation.

OBJECTIVE: To apply the lesion method to assess neuroanatomical substrates for judgments of forearm orientation from proprioceptive cues in humans. METHODS: Participants were 15 subjects with chronic unilateral brain lesions and stable behavioural deficits, and 14 neurologically normal controls. Subjects aligned the forearm to earth fixed vertical and trunk fixed anterior-posterior (A-P) axes ("straight ahead"), with the head aligned to the trunk and with head and shoulder orientations varied on each trial. RESULTS: Most subjects with posterior parietal lobe lesions made larger variable erro

Temporo-parietal and fronto-parietal lobe contributions to theory of mind and executive control: an fMRI study of verbal jokes.

'Getting a joke' always requires resolving an apparent incongruity, but the particular cognitive operations called upon vary depending on the nature of the joke itself. Previous research has identified the primary neural correlates of the cognitive and affective processes called upon to respond to humor generally, but little work has been done on the substrates underlying the distinct cognitive operations required to comprehend particular joke types. This study explored the neural correlates of the cognitive processes required to successfully comprehend three joke types: bridging-inference jok

Neurologic Outcome After Resection of Parietal Lobe Including Primary Somatosensory Cortex: Implications of Additional Resection of Posterior Parietal Cortex.

OBJECTIVE: Postoperative neurologic outcomes after primary somatosensory cortex (S1) resection have not been well documented. This study was designed to evaluate the neurologic deterioration that follows resection of the S1 areas and to assess the risk factors associated with these morbidities. METHODS: We reviewed 48 consecutive patients with medically intractable epilepsy who underwent resection of the S1 and/or the adjacent cortex. The 48 patients were categorized into 4 groups according to the resected area as seen on postoperative magnetic resonance images: group 1 (resection of S1 only;

Distributed attribute representation in the superior parietal lobe during probabilistic decision-making.

Several studies have examined the neural substrates of probabilistic decision-making, but few have systematically investigated the neural representations of the two objective attributes of probabilistic rewards, that is, the reward amount and the probability. Specifically, whether there are common or distinct neural activity patterns to represent the objective attributes and their association with the neural representation of the subjective valuation remains largely underexplored. We conducted two studies (nStudy1  = 34, nStudy2  = 41) to uncover distributed neural representations of the objec

Relationship between visuoperceptual functions and parietal structural abnormalities in temporal lobe epilepsy.

Progressive gray matter volume reductions beyond the epileptogenic area has been described in temporal lobe epilepsy. There is less evidence regarding correlations between gray and white matter volume changepres and multi-domain cognitive performance in this setting. We aimed to investigate correlations between volume changes in parietal structures and visuospatial performance in temporal lobe epilepsy patients. we performed a cross-sectional study comparing global and regional brain volume data from 34 temporal lobe epilepsy patients and 30 healthy controls. 3D T1-weighted sequences were obta

Detrended fluctuation analysis in the presurgical evaluation of parietal lobe epilepsy patients.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the usability of long-range temporal correlations (LRTCs) in non-invasive localization of the epileptogenic zone (EZ) in refractory parietal lobe epilepsy (RPLE) patients. METHODS: We analyzed 10 RPLE patients who had presurgical MEG and underwent epilepsy surgery. We quantified LRTCs with detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) at four frequency bands for 200 cortical regions estimated using individual source models. We correlated individually the DFA maps to the distance from the resection area and from cortical locations of interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs). Addi

Mapping visuospatial and self-motion perception functions in the left parietal lobe.

Parietal lobe functions include somesthesia, language, calculation, self-motion perception, and visuospatial awareness. In this video, the authors show the intraoperative mapping of a left parietal lobe for a low-grade glioma resection. Standard sensory and language mapping were performed. Interestingly, by using the "Line Bisection" task, subcortical stimulation of the gyrus angularis was repeatedly associated with ipsilateral spatial neglect, often described in the right parietal lobe. In a similar way, subcortical stimulation in a more posterior point elicited episodes of vertigo, probably
