Prognostic factors depicting disease-specific survival in parotid-gland tumors.

PURPOSE: To identify significant prognostic factors that can be used in clinical decision-making with regard to parotid cancer, which is characterized by a complex and diverse group of tumors with variable outcomes. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A historical cohort of 184 patients with parotid-gland malignancy, who had been registered in the Province of Manitoba from 1970 to 2003, was examined. Survival analysis was performed using Kaplan-Meier curves and a log-rank test for comparing subgroups. The independent effect of factors that predicted survival at the bivariate level was determined using a C

[Therapy of benign diseases of the parotid gland by instillation of a resorbable protein solution into the duct system].

Non-neoplastic disorders of the parotid gland like chronic recurrent parotitis, asymptomatic gland enlargement or salivary fistulae present a therapeutic problem. Surgical removal of the gland is often difficult as scar tissue may be present in these benign diseases. Therefore alternative methods are suggested to eliminate parenchyma by inducing atrophy. This goal can also be attained by intraluminal duct occlusion. The principle consists of instillation of a resorbable protein solution into the duct system, a procedure similar to sialography injection. In animal experiments marked atrophy of

[Treatment of sialorrhoea in neurological diseases with trans-dermic injections of botulinum toxin type A in the parotid glands].

INTRODUCTION: Sialorrhoea is a disabling problem in many patients affected by neurological disorders. Anticholinergic drugs often produce side effects in these patients. Botulinum toxin A (TBA) blocks liberation of acetil-choline in motor and autonomic nerve terminals. METHODS: We report preliminary data about three patients, affected by motor neuron disease, Parkinson's disease and pons infarction respectively. All of them underwent treatment with TBA in both parotid glands to treat sialorrhoea, and were prospectively evaluated. Severity and Frequency Sialorrhoea Scale was used pre-treatment

Recurrent kimura disease of unilateral parotid gland: the magnetic resonance imaging findings.

Kimura disease (KD) is a rare chronic inflammatory disorder, mainly seen in young Asian males, characterised by painless salivary gland swelling, lymphadenopathy, subcutaneous nodules in the head and neck and peripheral eosinophilia, likely due to an abnormal immune response. We report a case of an Indian male in his early 40s, presenting with a gradually enlarging, painless left parotid swelling for 6 months, without fever or trauma. He had undergone left parotid surgery 7 years ago, with histopathology confirming KD. Few palpable left cervical lymph nodes were also observed on examination. M

Preoperative Direct Puncture Embolization of Castleman Disease of the Parotid Gland: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Castleman disease (CD) is an uncommon benign lymphoproliferative disease characterized by hypervascular lymphoid hyperplasia. We present a unique case of unicentric CD of the parotid gland treated by preoperative direct puncture embolization. CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old female patient was admitted for a right neck mass. Ultrasound examination and MRI scan documented a hypervascular mass within the right parotid gland. Preoperative embolization was performed by direct puncture technique: a needle was inserted into the core of the mass under both ultrasound and fluoroscopic gui

Salivary duct carcinoma arising in IgG4-related autoimmune disease of the parotid gland.

Hyper IgG4 disease or IgG4-related sclerosing/autoimmune disease is a multisystem condition characterized histologically by fibrosis, lymphoplasmacytic infiltration, and abundant IgG4 plasma cells associated with raised serum IgG4 levels. We present a case of salivary duct carcinoma of the parotid gland in a background of chronic sclerosing sialadenitis that also involved the submandibular gland with associated regional lymphadenopathy. The serology showed raised total IgG levels of 16.3 g/L (reference range, 6.0-15.0) and raised IgG4 levels of 3.41 g/L (reference range, 0.07-1.70). The saliva

[Parotiditis viral infection associated with Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease. Review of 1 case].

Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease or necrotizing histiocytic lymphadenitis is a self-limited process of lymphatic system that affects more frequently young women. Fever and adenopathy, often cervical, are typical. Diagnosis is fundamentally based on the affected lymph node biopsy, since laboratory data are often normal. It's a very rare entity in Spain, being more frequent in Oriental countries. It's a benign evolution process, with a spontaneous healing in some weeks or months. This is the reason because of this disease could be infradiagnosed. It's very important the differential diagnosis with malig

Parotid Tuberculosis as the Presenting Manifestation of Disseminated Disease in an Otherwise Asymptomatic HIV Patient.

Parotid tuberculosis is not widely described in the literature. Even though a rare presentation of a commonly occurring disease, it is still missed as a differential diagnosis and often mistaken for neoplasms, eventually leading to unnecessary surgical resections. Here, we present a case of a young lady with a slowly growing unilateral parotid mass along with matted, non-tender cervical, axillary, and inguinal lymphadenopathy, who was incidentally found to have HIV with a cluster of differentiation 4 (CD4) lymphocyte count of 38 per microliter. Fine needle aspiration revealed acid-fast bacilli

Solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the parotid gland in a patient with mixed connective tissue disease.

Oral health care providers are at a higher risk of being infected by novel coronavirus due to close proximity to patient's face and exposure to saliva while working on the patient. Thus, there is an urgent need to interpret the available literature in order to establish safe practices for dental professionals as well as limit the spread of infection through saliva. The study intends to provide up-to-date, compiled evidence-based information related to saliva and its association with COVID-19. It further provides suggestions for safe practices in dentistry in current pandemic times. Oral sympto

Coexistence of sclerosing polycystic adenosis and dysgenetic polycystic disease of parotid, Report of a case.

Sclerosing polycystic adenosis (SPA) is a rare benign salivary gland lesion. Dysgenetic polycystic disease (DPD), which is a histologically similar lesion, may cause a lattice-like gross appearance with bilateral enlargement of the entire salivary glands. In this report, we present a case of SPA in the right parotid and coexistent DPD involving the both parotid.

Castleman's Disease Presenting as a Parotid Mass in the Pediatric Population: A Report of 2 Cases.

Introduction. Angiofollicular lymph node hyperplasia (Castleman's disease) is a nonmalignant lymphoproliferative disorder that generally involves the lymph nodes of young adults, most commonly in the mediastinum. Rarely, Castleman's disease may present in the parotid gland. The disease can be further classified into unicentric or multicentric forms, with considerable differences in presentation, treatment, and prognosis. Case(s). We present cases of two pediatric patients, aged 7 and 11, who both presented with a slow-growing, painless parotid mass. In each case, the mass was excised via a sup

Cat scratch disease due to Bartonella henselae infection mimicking parotid malignancy.

An unusual Bartonella henselae infection presenting clinically as a putative parotid cancer was diagnosed based on serological tests, histomorphology and amplification of a 16S-rDNA sequence of Bartonella henselae. The patient improved greatly upon antibiotic treatment and did not require surgery. Although uncommon, infection with Bartonella spp., particularly Bartonella henselae, should be included in the differential diagnosis of parotid tumors.

[Infratemporal gout tophus--a rare differential diagnosis in primary parotid gland disease].

Soft-tissue tophi can be observed in up to 50% of patients with primary gout. They are firm deposits of monosodium urate in crystal form, which develop from pinhead-size to egg-size in the subcutaneous tissue. In the field of ear, nose, and throat diseases tophi have been described in such rare locations as the wing of the nose, the tongue, the epiglottis, and the arytenoid and thyroid cartilage. Tophus formation at the temporomandibular joint with extension into the fossa infratemporalis has been mentioned only three times in the world literature. -In the present paper, the authors report on
