Cystic lesions, greater than 8 mm in diameter, were found in 16 of 183 surgically excised parotid glands over an 8 yr period. Of these 16 cysts, 9 had developed in parotid neoplasms, usually of Warthin type. The remaining 7 were not associated with neoplasms and 5 were unilocular. The epithelial lining of non-neoplastic cysts was squamous in all but one case, and there was lymphoid tissue in the walls of 3 cysts. On the basis of these findings and a review of the literature, a morphological classification of parotid cysts is proposed. To the surgical pathologist, the major problems in dealing

Tubercular infection of the parotid gland often confuses clinicians, it being a rare entity even in an endemic area. Its similarity in presentation with that of parotid neoplasms, nonspecific symptoms, low incidence and non-contributory radiological findings often leads to its misdiagnosis as parotid neoplasm, which in the due course results in parotidectomy. Therefore, FNAC of parotid swelling is helpful to avoid unnecessary surgery and patient discomfort. We report four cases of FNAC of parotid swelling with suspicion of neoplasm/inflammatory lesion and were diagnosed as tuberculosis of the

Cutaneous metastases from parotid tumors are uncommon and imply a poor prognosis. In this article, we report 2 new cutaneous metastasis cases from 2 different parotid malignancies and 42 additional cases from a literature review. Clinical manifestations, localization, and outcomes of skin metastasis from parotid tumors are described. Although infrequent, parotid neoplasms may develop skin metastasis many years after the initial diagnosis, mostly in the head and neck region. Therefore, long-term follow-up and periodic skin examination of these patients is mandatory. Dermatologists and surgeons

BACKGROUND: Fungal abscesses of the parotid gland are rare, and cases arising within parotid neoplasms have not been described previously. This report conveys our experience managing such an entity, which is further distinguished by its occurrence in an immunocompetent host.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 59-year-old man experienced multiple recurrences of a parotid fungal abscess requiring repeated drainage procedures. Definitive excision ultimately demonstrated Candida glabrata infecting a Warthin tumor.
CONCLUSIONS: This case is the first report of a parotid neoplasm presenting as a fungal absces

Oncocytic carcinoma of the parotid gland is a rare neoplasm. To date 70 cases have been described in 55 reports. To the best of our knowledge the simultaneous occurrence of oncocytic carcinoma and second malignancy in another site (outside the parotid gland) has not been reported. An oncocytic carcinoma of the parotid gland is described in 56-year-old male with simultaneous breast cancer, emphasising the value of aspiration cytology and imaging procedures in the diagnosis of parotideal neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Childhood parotid neoplasms appear to have different characteristics from adults. This point, in addition to the rarity of these tumors, reflects the challenges faced in diagnosing and treating parotid neoplasms in children.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included all children who presented to the Children's Cancer Hospital Egypt (CCHE, 57357) with parotid masses from January 2008 to December 2020.
RESULTS: Twenty-one patients were included. Malignant neoplasms were found in 12 (57.1%) of which mucoepidermoid carcinoma was the most common. Benign neoplasms were fo

Accessory parotid gland (APG) tumors account for 1% to 7% of all parotid gland neoplasms but are more likely to be malignant than main parotid gland tumors. Management of APG neoplasms entails surgical excision. Four primary approaches to resection have been described in the literature with varying facial nerve outcomes. We report a case of a 4-cm APG pleomorphic adenoma utilizing a transoral approach for excision without postoperative facial nerve injury. A transoral approach is known to mitigate patients' cosmetic concerns; however, prior reports utilized endoscopic assistance on patients wi

Glioblastoma (GBM) is one of the most highly aggressive neoplasms of the central nervous system. Extra-cranial metastases in GBM are rare. Here we present the case of a 26-year-old man with extra-cranial metastasis of a frontal lobe GBM to the parotid gland, cervical lymph nodes, and bones, with initial diagnosis made by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the parotid gland. FNAC is a reliable technique in the study of primary and secondary parotid gland neoplasms, allowing a presumptive diagnosis in difficult cases. We correlate the cytologic, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical fi

In this article, we present a review of the literature, and we focus on 2 particular cases of cancer of the salivary glands accessory in pediatric patients The accessory parotid is the site of congenital and acquired lesions. In adults, the acquired lesions are often neoplastic and are usually similar to those seen in the main parotid gland. The disorders in children are less well defined, as only a few cases have been reported. The accessory parotid gland, or accessory parotid, is a nodule of normal salivary tissue separated from the main parotid gland, located on the masseter muscle, to which

Parotid gland oncocytoma is an uncommon, benign salivary neoplasm composed of mitochondria-rich oncocytes. The purpose of this study was to correlate MR imaging and histopathology of parotid gland oncocytomas and to define the features that may distinguish these neoplasms from other benign and malignant parotid gland tumors. The MR imaging features in 9 patients with a pathologic diagnosis of oncocytoma were retrospectively reviewed. The imaging features were strikingly similar for 8 of the 9 patients. All lesions appeared T1 hypointense but isointense to the native parotid gland on fat-satura

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The head and neck surgeon's fascination with parotid surgery arises from the gland's spectrum of histopathological presentations, as well as the diversity of its morphological features. A mass arising in the mid-cheek region may often be overlooked as a rare accessory lobe parotid neoplasm. This report serves to revisit the topic of accessory parotid gland neoplasms to emphasize proper management, particularly the surgical aspects, so that consequences of salivary fistula, facial nerve paralysis, and recurrence are avoided.

Tuberculosis of the parotid gland is extremely unusual. Tuberculosis comprises 2.5% to 10% of parotid gland lesions. Two clinical forms of parotid gland tuberculosis infection exist. One is a diffuse parenchymatous disease (either primary or secondary to nodal disease), resembling common infection. The second is a chronic, slow-growing, painless, and firm parotid mass mimicking a neoplasm. Most of these patients were diagnosed after parotid gland surgery and histopathologic evaluation. Warthin tumor is a well-known benign neoplasm of the salivary glands. It is the second most common tumor of t

BACKGROUND: Sebaceous lymphadenoma of the parotid gland is a rare benign neoplasm. This is the first reported case of fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) findings for sebaceous lymphadenoma of the parotid gland.
CASE: A 60-year-old male presented with painless, bilateral parotid swelling noted for 5 months. The swelling was more pronounced on the right. Examination revealed bilaterally prominent parotid glands with diffuse firmness but no discrete masses. There was no evidence of facial nerve dysfunction. Laboratory evaluation was negative for infectious and autoimmune etiologies. Magnetic r

The unusual case is described of a benign parotid gland neoplasm with intermingled sebaceous and lymphoid tissue, synchronous to breast cancer. In the past, the patient had undergone a simple surgical procedure for a cystic parotid gland lesion in that same gland. Secondary neoplasms have only occasionally been reported, since there are few cases for corroborating the strong correlation between salivary neoplasms and other carcinomas as in Muir-Torre syndrome; the previous cystic lesion showed the origin of the neoplasm from a sebaceous inclusion in the lymph node as a postulate of Warthin tum

The parotid glands are paired major salivary glands and are located in the preauricular region. Parotidectomy is a surgical procedure that entails removal of all or a portion of the parotid gland. The most common indications for this operative procedure are a neoplasm of the parotid gland or metastases to parotid lymph nodes. An intimate knowledge of the anatomy of the parotid gland and related structures is necessary for the performance of safe and successful parotid surgery. This report will discuss the anatomy of the parotid gland as it pertains to parotid surgery and the avoidance of compl
