Cryptosporidium meleagridis in an Indian ring-necked parrot (Psittacula krameri).

OBJECTIVE: To perform a morphological and genetic characterisation of a Cryptosporidium infection in an Indian ring-necked parrot (Psittacula krameri) and to compare this with C meleagridis from a turkey. DESIGN: Tissue and intestinal sections from an Indian ring-necked parrot were examined microscopically for Cryptosporidium. The organism was also purified from the crop and intestine, the DNA extracted and a portion of the 18S rDNA gene amplified, sequenced and compared with sequence and biological information obtained for C meleagridis from a turkey as well as sequence information for other

Bilateral Encephalitozoon hellem Keratoconjunctivitis With Microsporidial Spores in Parrot Feces.

We describe bilateral Encephalitozoon hellem keratoconjunctivitis in a 39-year-old immunocompetent woman with two years of daily close contact with a pet parrot. She presented with a three-week history of bilateral ocular redness, itching, foreign-body sensation, and blurred vision that had not improved with topical fluorometholone, lubricants, and levofloxacin prescribed for presumed dry eye disease. Slit-lamp examination showed bilateral conjunctival inflammation and diffuse superficial punctate corneal infiltrates. Giemsa staining of a left-eye corneal scraping demonstrated oval spore-like

Follicular choristoma in the third eyelid of an eclectus parrot (Eclectus roratus).

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 1-year-old male eclectus parrot (Eclectus roratus) with a 3- to 4-month history of blepharospasm in the right eye was referred to a veterinary medical teaching hospital for further evaluation. Conventional medical treatments had been ineffective. The referring avian specialist had plucked a suspected ectopic feather from the right eye 6 weeks prior to the referral evaluation. CLINICAL FINDINGS: The parrot was sedated, and ophthalmic examination of the right eye with slit-lamp biomicroscopy revealed a 3 × 2 × 2-mm raised vascular mass with a focally pigmented center associa

Identification of Chlamydia gallinacea in a parrot and in free-range chickens in Australia.

Chlamydia gallinacea is a recently described bacterial species in a genus known to infect and cause disease in animals and humans. Our report describes the identification of C. gallinacea infection in free-range laying chickens (Gallus gallus) in Australia, and the identification of C. gallinacea infection in a parrot, a wild Australian galah (Eolophus roseicapillus). There is currently little knowledge of the effects of C. gallinacea infection on avian hosts, but it has been linked to respiratory disease in humans and could potentially cause similar disease in other species. Our report highli

Magnesium therapy in a hypocalcemic African grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus).

Hypocalcemic-induced seizure activity is a clinical entity that is commonly diagnosed in neurologic African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus). Plasma calcium levels are typically less than 6.0 mg/dL at the time of seizure activity, and although the underlying cause of the hypocalcemia has not yet been determined, many theories have been proposed. An African grey parrot that had been fed a seed diet for 8 years was presented with hypocalcemia and seizures and exhibited precipitously declining plasma calcium levels, despite aggressive calcium and vitamin A, D, and E supplementation for 4 days.

Hydrocephalus in a yellow-headed Amazon parrot (Amazona ochrocephala oratrix).

A 37-year-old female yellow-headed Amazon parrot (Amazona ochrocephala oratrix) was presented after a 4-month-period behavior change and intermittent episodes of obtunded mentation. Clinical findings on physical examination included ataxia, a weak grasp, and reluctance to move. Results of magnetic resonance imaging were consistent with severe hydrocephalus without evidence of cerebrospinal fluid obstruction. The bird was treated with tapering dosages of prednisolone over a 4-month period, during which time the episodes did not occur. Discontinuation of treatment was attempted several times but

Anterior forebrain pathway in parrots is necessary for producing learned vocalizations with individual signatures.

Parrots have enormous vocal imitation capacities and produce individually unique vocal signatures. Like songbirds, parrots have a nucleated neural song system with distinct anterior (AFP) and posterior forebrain pathways (PFP). To test if song systems of parrots and songbirds, which diverged over 50 million years ago, have a similar functional organization, we first established a neuroscience-compatible call-and-response behavioral paradigm to elicit learned contact calls in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). Using variational autoencoder-based machine learning methods, we show that contac

Urofecal steroid profiles of captive Blue-fronted parrots (Amazona aestiva) with different reproductive outcomes.

Despite Psitaciformes (parrots) being the third largest nonpasserine order (398 species), it currently ranks second in number of threatened species (28%) according to the Internatinal Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) criteria. Since most of the literature concerning reproductive endocrinology in avian species derives from domestic and song birds, it is puzzling that advances in reproductive science for the Psitaciformes order lags far behind, in spite of the growing threats against them. In order to expand our knowledge of Neotropical parrots (Psittacidae), we examined annual changes in

Non-Invasive Measurement of Adrenocortical Activity in Blue-Fronted Parrots (Amazona aestiva, Linnaeus, 1758).

Parrots kept in zoos and private households often develop psychological and behavioural disorders. Despite knowing that such disorders have a multifactorial aetiology and that chronic stress is involved, little is known about their development mainly due to a poor understanding of the parrots' physiology and the lack of validated methods to measure stress in these species. In birds, blood corticosterone concentrations provide information about adrenocortical activity. However, blood sampling techniques are difficult, highly invasive and inappropriate to investigate stressful situations and wel

Evaluation of a novel feather scoring system for monitoring feather damaging behaviour in parrots.

Feather damaging behaviour is common in captive psittacine birds and there is a need for reliable methods to evaluate the efficacy of therapeutic and preventive interventions. This study compared the inter- and intra-observer reliabilities of a novel feather scoring system with an existing system to assess the plumage of grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus). Regions of the body were photographed separately at 1 week intervals and shown at random to 35 examiners (avian veterinarians and veterinary students), who used the two scoring systems to assess plumage. Since the quality of the photographs

Blood Plasma Vitamin and Mineral Concentrations in Pet Grey Parrots (Psittacus erithacus) in Germany.

Grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus) are commonly kept as pet birds around the world, but little is known about their plasma vitamin and mineral concentrations. The aim of this study was to establish reference intervals for vitamins A, D, and E and various minerals (calcium, cobalt, copper, iron, iodine, potassium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, sodium, inorganic phosphorus, selenium, and zinc) in the plasma of 88 adult pet grey parrots in Germany. The samples were collected during routine health checks and analyzed using a point-of-care device, an autoanalyzer, inductively coupled plasma mas

Various Endoscopic Approaches for Removal of Proventricular Foreign Bodies in Parrots-Three Case Reports.

Although the use of incision-free endoscopy for foreign body (FB) removal in dogs and cats has been extensively documented, its application in birds remains limited. Thus, we present the endoscopic removal of gastrointestinal (GI) FBs from psittacine birds, employing different patient positioning and anesthesia methods. Two blue-and-yellow macaws (Ara ararauna) and a Triton cockatoo (Cacatua galerita triton) were examined. X-ray imaging revealed FBs situated in the proventriculus in each case. The FBs, all identified as feeding tubes, were safely removed using grasping forceps during the endos

Radiographic Measurements of the Cardiac Silhouette in Healthy Blue-Fronted Amazon Parrots (Amazona aestiva).

The objective of this investigation was to determine radiographic measurements, without chemical restraint, of the cardiac silhouette in 34 healthy, adult blue-fronted Amazon parrots (Amazona aestiva) of unknown sex with a mean body weight of 393 g. The birds were fasted 3 hours before the radiographic examinations. Three thoracic radiographic views (ventrodorsal, right lateral, and left lateral) were obtained from each bird for assessment. There was no significant statistical difference between right and left radiographic measurements. The mean values of the measurements in the ventrodorsal v

Seasonal and genera-specific variations in semen availability and semen characteristics in large parrots.

In large parrots electro-stimulation is suitable for collecting semen, and therefore, to facilitate semen examination and artificial insemination. Previous studies have detected differences in the semen collection success rate and semen parameters between psittacine genera. It remained unclear whether these differences were genera-related, seasonal variations or depend on the males' relationship status. To answer these questions, semen collection and spermatological analysis were performed for four psittacine groups (macaws, amazons, eclectus parrots and cockatoos) over 13 months. In one breed

An outbreak of chlamydiosis in captive blue-fronted Amazon parrots (Amazona aestiva) in Brazil.

Fifty-eight blue-fronted Amazon parrot (Amazona aestiva) nestlings, recovered from the illegal trade, became ill at a wildlife rehabilitation center in São Paulo State, Brazil. Clinical signs observed were nonspecific, and the mortality rate was 96.5% despite initial treatment with norfloxacin. Postmortem examinations were performed on 10 birds. Liver and spleen smears showed structures suggestive of Chlamydophila psittaci in four cases. Diagnosis was confirmed by seminested polymerase chain reaction on tissue samples. Other birds from the same location showed no clinical signs of the disease,

Environmental enrichment and development of cage stereotypy in Orange-winged Amazon parrots (Amazona amazonica).

Stereotypies are abnormal repetitive behaviors that often develop in animals housed in impoverished environments. Stereotypy represents the interaction of several complex developmental phenomena. To characterize the temporal nature of stereotypy increase (escalation) and decrease (attenuation), we monitored changes in stereotypy performance in young Orange-winged Amazon parrots reared either in barren cages or cages provided with enrichments designed to facilitate foraging and locomotion. Unenriched parrots developed significantly more stereotypy than enriched parrots, and the mean time to ste

Polyomavirus Infection in Two Young Parrots: Assessment of Viral Distribution in Organs and Affected Tissues.

Avian polyomavirus (APyV) is responsible for diseases in birds belonging to several avian orders, including Psittaciformes, Anseriformes, and other susceptible taxa. APyVs appear to be able to replicate in various organs of susceptible bird species. This study aimed to investigate (i) the distribution of APyV in the organs of two parrot chicks belonging to different species, Moluccan eclectus (Eclectus roratus) and blue-winged macaw (Primolius maracana), which died due to APyV infection and (ii) the lesions associated with the infection. A 9-year retrospective mortality review of captive orange-bellied parrots (Neophema chrysogaster) in Australia.

The orange-bellied parrot (Neophema chrysogaster) (OBP) is a critically endangered migratory parrot found in south-eastern Australia. A long-standing conservation recovery programme includes monitoring and support of the wild population and a multi-site captive insurance population. While disease represents a threatening process to the OBP, minimal information about causes of mortality in this species has been published. A systematic review of necropsy reports from the captive OBP metapopulation over a 9-year period (2010-2019) was undertaken to quantify and analyse the causes of mortality of
