Observation of immediate and mid-term effects of partial spleen embolization in reducing hepatic venous pressure gradient.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the immediate and mid-term effects of partial spleen embolization (PSE) in reducing hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) in patients with cirrhotic esophagogastric varices. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with cirrhosis and esophagogastric varices in our hospital between July 2016 and March 2018 were consecutively selected. Forty-three patients were selected based on the eligibility criteria to undergo PSE. The change in HVPG 5 minutes before and after embolization, was used to determine the immediate effect of PSE on HVPG reduction. HVPG was retested after 6 months to ob

Treatment of complex ischial pressure sores with free partial lateral latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flaps in paraplegic patients.

In paraplegic patients dependent on their upper body for mobility, the latissimus dorsi muscle is generally unacceptable for microsurgical reconstruction of complex ischial defect. To avoid total muscle function loss, a portion of the lateral latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap can instead be harvested. From February 1999 to March 2009, 11 paraplegic patients with complex ischial pressure sores were prospectively recruited. The reconstruction was performed using a free partial lateral latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap. The follow-up period ranged from 18 to 114 months (mean, 60 months)

Urination frequency and cystic pressure resistance after fractionated whole or partial irradiation of the rabbit urinary bladder.

Urination frequency and cystic pressure resistance have been used as end-points to assess x-ray-induced changes of bladder function. Whole or half bladders of adult male rabbits were irradiated, caudally or cranially. The absorbed dose was 33 Gy, 36 Gy or 39 Gy, given in 5 daily fractions. Animals which received a whole bladder dose of 39 Gy or 36 Gy showed increased urination frequency and enhanced bladder pressure resistance during the whole follow-up time of 100 weeks, compared with the sham-irradiated controls. At half bladder irradiation, only the highest doses (39 Gy to the cranial part

Preshunt and postshunt portal vein pressures and portal vein-to-inferior vena cava pressure gradients do not predict outcome following partial portal decompression.

This study was undertaken to determine whether preshunt, postshunt, or changes in portal vein (PV) pressures or portal vein-to-inferior vena cava (PV-IVC) pressure gradients determine outcome following partial portal decompression attained through small-diameter prosthetic H-graft portacaval shunt (HGPCS). Seventy-seven adults underwent HGPCS (Child's class A 10%, B 56%, and C 34%) and were prospectively evaluated per protocol. PV pressures and PV-IVC pressure gradients decreased significantly in all patients with shunting (P < 0.001). Eight (10%) patients died within 30 days of shunting (Chil

The association of arterial partial oxygen pressure with mortality in patients with severe acute pancreatitis: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) frequently develop hypoxic acute respiratory failure (AHRF), with a mortality rate as high as 37%. However, the optimal partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) for SAP patients remains unclear to date. This study aims to investigate whether partial pressure of oxygen is associated with mortality in SAP patients. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University from 2015 to 2024. Propensity score matching (based on whether arte

Association of dynamic changes in arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide with neurological outcomes in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral blood flow (CBF) is closely regulated by carbon dioxide (CO2). In patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), abnormal arterial partial pressure of CO2 (PaCO2) might deteriorate brain injuries. Nevertheless, the impact of dynamic PaCO2 fluctuations on neurological outcomes in aSAH patients has not been extensively studied. Our study aimed to investigate the association between dynamic PaCO2 levels and unfavorable neurological outcomes in aSAH patients. METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, we consecutively enrolled 159 aSAH patients from Decembe

Association of early-onset Type 2 diabetes with cognitive impairment is partially mediated by increased pulse pressure.

AIMS: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been shown to be associated with cognitive decline and dementia. As earlier onset of diabetes implies a longer disease duration and an increased risk to complications, we sought to investigate the effect of T2DM onset on cognitive function of our patients. METHODS: We administered the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) to T2DM patients aged 45-85 from our SMART2D cohort. We assessed the association of the T2DM onset age (both continuous and stratified into 3 groups: early-onset ≤40 (n = 326), middle-aged onset 4

Impression pressures against teeth in a partially edentulous model with a mobile tooth: influence of impression tray design.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of custom tray designs on local pressures against teeth during the impression procedure. In a previous study, a partially edentulous simulation model with a mobile tooth was used, and the effect of custom tray designs on the displacement of the mobile tooth was examined during the impression procedure. Based on that study's results, we have assumed that the differences in impression pressures between the labial and the lingual sides of a mobile tooth could either cause or affect displacement. The present study was undertaken to determi

Partial and transient relief of conduit obstruction by low-pressure balloon dilation in patients with congenital heart disease.

Seven patients underwent attempted low pressure balloon dilation of stenotic conduits or homografts from right ventricle to pulmonary artery (n = 5), in the aortic valve position (n = 1), or from right atrium to left pulmonary artery (n = 1). In the right ventricle to pulmonary artery group, mean gradient reduction was only 17%. At follow-up, two patients underwent surgical conduit replacement, one had a stent implanted at cardiac catheterization, the other two are awaiting surgical intervention. The patient with a homograft in the aortic valve position had a good initial result but restenosed

Real-Time Estimation of Arterial Partial Pressure of Carbon Dioxide in Patients Undergoing General Anesthesia: Predictive Modeling Study.

BACKGROUND: Adequate ventilation in mechanically ventilated patients is contingent upon the monitoring of the arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) during general anesthesia. Despite its significance, continuous monitoring remains challenging due to the imprecision of noninvasive estimations and the invasive nature of traditional methods such as arterial blood gas analysis. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a machine learning model to continuously estimate PaCO2 in mechanically ventilated patients, with the goal of potentially improving intraoperative monitoring accuracy un

The correlation study between post-surgery oxygen partial pressure level and prognosis of patients with sepsis during hospitalization.

Sepsis remains a leading cause of mortality and healthcare burden, necessitating improved diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Observational studies suggest that hyperoxemia may improve postoperative sepsis outcomes, but evidence remains limited. This study aims to explore the optimal range of oxygen partial pressure (PaO2) in postsurgical sepsis patients and its impact on prognosis. Clinical data of adult sepsis patients were extracted from the medical information mart for intensive care-IV database. Patients were categorized into control (PaO2 ≤ 100 mm Hg) and hyperoxemia (PaO2 > 100 mm Hg

Metabolic responses of purple phototrophic bacteria to elevated hydrogen partial pressure: Metatranscriptomic insights into biohydrogen production and consumption.

During biohydrogen production, self-generated gas accumulation can lead to elevated hydrogen partial pressure (HPP) in the headspace. However, the effects of elevated HPP on hydrogen yield in photo fermentation systems and the metabolic responses of phototrophic bacteria (PPB) under such conditions remain poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of elevated HPP on PPB-based biohydrogen production and examined the underlying metabolic responses using metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analysis. PPB maintained efficient H2 production (0.67 ± 0.09 L H2·g COD-1; 0.09 ± 0.01 L H2·L-1·

Effect of first order chemical reactions through tissue-blood interface on the partial pressure distribution of inhaled gas.

Gas exchange is an essential process to get fresh oxygenated air from the environment. In the human respiratory system, partial pressure is responsible for exchanging gas between tissue-blood capillary (inter capillary). However, the mechanisms of partial pressure distribution in the human respiratory system remain incompletely understood in terms of inter-capillary transmission with tissue porosity and reactive boundary conditions. In this paper, we worked on the spatial (radial) and temporal variations of inhaled gas partial pressure through inter capillary. We assumed that the tissue of alv

Change in Viscoelasticity of the Hemoglobin-Introduced Supramolecular Polymer Hydrogel in Response to pH, Temperature, and Oxygen Partial Pressure.

Hemoglobin (Hb) compartmentalized within red blood cells plays a key role in respiration by reversible oxygen (O2) binding at the site of ferrous heme iron. The stable α2β2 tetrameric quaternary structure of Hb reversibly dissociates into two αβ dimers (α2β2 ⇌ 2αβ). The α2β2 structure stability depends on pH and temperature, and on the state of heme, such as iron valence, ligands, and O2 release. For this work, we synthesized a supramolecular polymer hydrogel by conjugating the β-subunits of Hb with four-armed 40 kDa PEG. The resulting gel has physical cross-links via the association of Hb sub

Plantar Partial Pressure Analysis in a Patient with Reverse Extensor Digitorum Brevis Flap for the Treatment of Hallux Injury.

INTRODUCTION: An extensor digitorum brevis (EDB) flap can be used to cover a small soft-tissue defect and has been widely used as pedicled flap to cover defects around the ankle and foot. However, its post-operative functional recovery is unknown. Few reports have evaluated gait after foot flap surgeries, although gait assessment is considered to be necessary for functional evaluation after foot reconstruction. We performed a reverse EDB flap to treat a right hallux injury and conducted a plantar partial pressure (PPP) analysis as a postoperative functional evaluation. CASE REPORT: A 30-year-
