High Diversity and Novel Enteric Viruses in Fecal Viromes of Healthy Wild and Captive Thai Cynomolgus Macaques (Macaca fascicularis).

Cynomolgus macaques are common across South East Asian countries including Thailand. The National Primate Research Center of Thailand, Chulalongkorn University (NPRCT-CU) captures wild-borne cynomolgus macaque for research use. Limited information is available on the enteric viruses and possible zoonotic infections into or from cynomolgus macaques. We characterized and compare the fecal virome of two populations; healthy wild-originated captive cynomolgus macaques (n = 43) reared in NPRCT-CU and healthy wild cynomolgus macaques (n = 35). Over 90% of recognized viral sequence reads amplified fr

Human Bocavirus (HBoV): An update on current status and future prospects in Saudi Arabia.

Viral respiratory tract infections, particularly Human Bocavirus (HBoV) infections, are a significant global health concern. COVID-19 has provided a suitable platform for infectious diseases caused by multiple pathogens. This review highlights key aspects of the current status and future prospects of HBoV research in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including global and local prevalence, clinical impact, and diagnostic challenges. It also emphasizes the need for future research, particularly in Saudi Arabia, to fill knowledge gaps, improve diagnosis, and design and develop future treatment and pre

Prevalence and genotypic characterization of Human Parvovirus B19 in children with measles- and rubella-like illness in Iran.

Human Parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a prototype of the Erythroparvovirus genus in Parvoviridae family. B19V infections are often associated with fever and rash, and can be mistakenly reported as measles or rubella. Differential diagnosis of B19V illness is necessary for case management and also for public health control activities, particularly in outbreak situations in which measles or rubella is suspected. To investigate the causative role of B19V infection in children with measles- and rubella-like illness, a total of 583 sera from children with exanthema were tested for presence of B19V by dete

Experimental parvoviral infection in humans.

Healthy adult volunteers were inoculated intranasally with human parvovirus obtained from an asymptomatic blood donor. One week after inoculation, intense viremia was observed in seronegative volunteers, accompanied by a mild illness with pyrexia, malaise, myalgia, itching, and excretion of virus from the respiratory tract. In the following week hematologic studies revealed reticulocytopenia with an associated slight drop in hemoglobin concentration, lymphopenia, neutropenia, and a drop in platelet counts. At 17-18 days after inoculation a second-phase illness with rash and arthralgia lasting

The role of the cytoskeleton during viral infection.

Upon infection, virions or subviral nucleoprotein complexes are transported from the cell surface to the site of viral transcription and replication. During viral egress, particles containing viral proteins and nucleic acids again move from the site of their synthesis to that of virus assembly and further to the plasma membrane. Because free diffusion of molecules larger than 500 kDa is restricted in the cytoplasm, viruses as well as cellular organelles employ active, energy-consuming enzymes for directed transport. This is particularly evident in the case of neurotropic viruses that travel lo

Human parvovirus infections.

Discovered by chance in 1974, the human serum parvovirus B19 is at present the only recognized, autonomous, pathogenic human parvovirus. For some years following its discovery, B19 was not associated with any defined clinical syndrome; although a high titre viraemia was often noted in infected individuals they were largely asymptomatic. In 1980 the causal association between B19 infection and aplastic crisis in chronic haemolytic anaemia began to emerge with the discovery of B19 as the agent responsible for aplastic crisis in sickle cell anaemia. This fulfilled the expectation of a disease of

[The effectiveness of vaccinating gilts against parvoviruses in a herd with endemic parvovirus infection].

An inactivated vaccine against swine parvovirosis with a lipoid adjuvant was tested in a herd infested with parvoviruses. The titre of the haemagglutination-inhibition antibodies was studied at the time of the first pregnancy in two groups of gilts included in the herd at the age of 7.5 months - one group vaccinated, the other left untreated. In the vaccinated group the geometrical means of the titres were significantly higher than in the non-vaccinated group throughout the time of study. The difference in the average number of piglets per litter between the two groups was evaluated after part

Determination and Characterization of Novel Papillomavirus and Parvovirus Associated with Mass Mortality of Chinese Tongue Sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) in China.

A massive mortality event concerning farmed Chinese tongue soles occurred in Tianjin, China, and the causative agent remains unknown. Here, a novel Cynoglossus semilaevis papillomavirus (CsPaV) and parvovirus (CsPV) were simultaneously isolated and identified from diseased fish via electron microscopy, virus isolation, genome sequencing, experimental challenges, and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Electron microscopy showed large numbers of virus particles present in the tissues of diseased fish. Viruses that were isolated and propagated in flounder gill cells (FG) induced typical c

Assessing Elimination of Mouse Kidney Parvovirus from Cages by Mechanical Washing.

Mouse kidney parvovirus (MKPV), a newly identified parvovirus of the genus Chaphamaparvovirus, causes inclusion body nephropathy in severely immunocompromised mice and is prevalent in research mouse colonies. As nonenveloped viruses, mammalian parvoviruses are stable and generally resist thermal inactivation; however, as a novel and highly divergent parvovirus, the thermal stability of MKPV is undefined. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of cage sanitization in a mechanical washer to eliminate MKPV. Cages contaminated by MKPV-infected mice were assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups: 1) co

Parvovirus B19 and the kidney.

Infection with parvovirus B19 causes several clinical syndromes (fifth disease, transient aplastic crisis, pure red cell aplasia, and hydrops fetalis) and may contribute to other illnesses. B19 has been linked to renal disease in three settings: As a cause of acute glomerulopathy and as a cause of anemia in ESRD and kidney transplantation. Case reports implicate parvovirus in the pathogenesis of proliferative glomerulonephritis and collapsing glomerulopathy, but a causal relationship has not been established. A proposed role for B19 infection is based on the temporal association of renal findi

Fetal thrombocytopenia secondary to parvovirus infection.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the platelet count in fetuses undergoing cordocentesis for hydrops caused by parvovirus infection. STUDY DESIGN: Fetal platelets were measured at cordocentesis in 11 pregnant women who underwent the procedure because of fetal ascites and/or hydrops caused by parvovirus infection. Thrombocytopenia was defined as mild (platelet count < 150 x 10(9)/L), moderate (platelet count < or = 100 x 10(9)/L), or severe (platelet count to < or = 50 x 10(9)/L). Paired Student t test was performed to compare the platelet count before and after the transfusion

[A case with petechiae due to human parvovirus B19].

We reported a case of 10-year-old girl with petechiae mainly on the truncus, although who had more than 10 x 10(4)/microliter of platelets. Smears of her bone marrow demonstrated extreme reduction of erythroblasts with giant proerythroblast like cells, which does not consist with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Human parvovirus B19 (B19) DNA was detected in her serum and throat swab using PCR and significant alterations of B19 specific IgM and IgG antibody titers were demonstrated. The petechiae subsided on the 8th day after her admission. She had not shown anemia less than Hb 10 g/dl, bu

[Subacute thyroiditis in Parvovirus B19 infection].

In a 32-year-old women with clinical and scintigraphic signs of thyroiditis, serological screening showed positive IgG and IgM titres against Parvovirus B19 (PB19). Subacute thyroiditis has not previously been reported following PB19 infection. The present case suggests that subacute thyroiditis may be caused by PB19 infection. Further screening is necessary to establish whether this infection is more frequently associated with subacute thyroiditis than previously thought.

[Parvoviruses as pathogenic agents in man].

Since 1981 an increasing number of human parvovirus infections have been reported. There is now clear evidence that parvovirus B19 is the causative agent of erythema infectiosum (fifth disease). Further clinical situations associated with this virus include aplastic crisis in patients with hemolytic anemia and acute and persistent arthropathies preferentially occurring in adult women. Transplacental infection during pregnancy may result in hydrops foetalis, intrauterine death and spontaneous abortion. Additional, thus far barely characterized parvoviruses have been isolated from individuals wi

Clinical and Histologic Characterization of Co-infection with Astrovirus and Goose Parvovirus in Goslings.

Goose astrovirus is a novel and distinct astrovirus that causes fatal visceral gout in 4- to 21-day-old goslings. Goose parvovirus is the etiologic agent of Derzsy disease, an acute, contagious, and fatal disease that affects mainly young goslings. This paper describes the clinical signs and gross and histopathologic features of co-infection with astrovirus and goose parvovirus. Clinical signs and history included increased mortality, depression, anorexia, enteritis, joint swelling, and paralysis. Postmortem examination showed a considerable amount of urate covering the internal organs, especi

Concomitant cryptosporidia, coronavirus and parvovirus infection in a raccoon (Procyon lotor).

A juvenile raccoon (Procyon lotor) was found moribund near Fort Collins, Colorado (USA). Upon examination, the raccoon was dehydrated, had a mucopurulent oculonasal discharge and diarrhea, and was euthanized. Postmortem examination revealed emaciation, severe fibrinous gastroenteritis and a small, firm liver. Histopathological findings included blunting of villi, infiltration of lamina propria with neutrophils and plasma cells, and mild bronchopneumonia. Cryptosporidium sp. was demonstrated on intestinal villi and coronavirus and parvovirus were identified in feces. Fluorescent antibody test f

Infection with human parvovirus (B19), aplasia of the bone marrow and a rash in hereditary spherocytosis.

Infection with human parvovirus (HPV) B19 was diagnosed in persons with hereditary spherocytosis during an outbreak of erythema infectiosum. A 10-year-old boy had an aplastic crisis of the bone marrow and a maculopapular rash. His mother also had an aplastic crisis, fever, rash and a transiently acellular marrow. Another boy had an aplastic crisis, leucopenia and fever, but did not have a rash. Aplastic crisis and a rash have rarely before been observed together and attributed to infection with HPV.
