Infection with parvovirus B19 during pregnancy is known to be associated with various fetal damage, such as aplastic anemia and hydrops fetalis. Our objective was to study the seroprevalence of parvovirus B19 in the obstetric population in Kuwait and to compare this with that in the adult population in other regions. Blood samples from 1047 pregnant women were used in this prospective study. Information regarding patient's age, parity, nationality and symptoms was obtained at the time of collection of the sample. Blood was tested for IgG and IgM antibodies specific for parvovirus B19 using the

We described two cases having erythroid hypoplasia and pancytopenia, respectively, caused by human parvovirus B19 (PVB19) infection on chemotherapy. The first patient was a seven-year-old boy with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. He has obtained complete remission with LSA2L2 protocol, but, immediately after this remission, he suddenly developed high fever, erythema on cheeks and severe anemia without reticulocytes. We concluded that the cause of anemia and other symptoms were due to PVB19 infection because PVB19 DNA in his serum was detected by dot blot hybridization and polymerase chain reaction, alt

OBJECTIVE: To provide a comprehensive description of the clinical and histopathological features associated with parvovirus B19 infection of the human fetus.
SUBJECTS: All cases of parvovirus B19-related fetal death presenting to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, over a 16 year period. Diagnosis was confirmed retrospectively by non-isotopic in situ hybridization for parvovirus B19 DNA.
RESULTS: The ten cases occurred in two clusters (1979-80 and 1988-89) and presented between 15 and 29 weeks gestation. In at least three cases maternal infection was asymptomatic. Nine fetuses were grossly

A seven months old boy was admitted to hospital for investigation and treatment of severe anaemia. The final diagnosis was hereditary spherocytosis. When, six weeks later, he developed an aplastic crisis, serological criteria provided evidence of recent human parvovirus B19 infection. The same disease was detected in the family. Human parvovirus B19 is shown to be of particular interest in aplastic crisis.

Human parvovirus B19 commonly infects children, causing erythema infectiosum (fifth disease). However, there is a significant adult population which has not been exposed to the virus and, consequently, does not have protective antibody. Recent reports have associated B19 infection during pregnancy with fetal death, although normal outcome of pregnancy is more common. To characterise further the role of B19 infection in fetal deaths, a series of laboratory investigations has been undertaken on tissues obtained at autopsy. These have demonstrated the presence of virion-sized DNA by Southern blot

Parvovirus B19 (B19V) DNA persists lifelong in human tissues, but the cell type harbouring it remains unclear. We here explore B19V DNA distribution in B, T and monocyte cell lineages of recently excised tonsillar tissues from 77 individuals with an age range of 2-69 years. We show that B19V DNA is most frequent and abundant among B cells, and within them we find a B19V genotype that vanished from circulation >40 years ago. Since re-infection or re-activation are unlikely with this virus type, this finding supports the maintenance of pathogen-specific humoral immune responses as a consequence

We report on an eight-year-old girl with acute pericarditis and transient erythroblastopenia associated with human parvovirus B19 (PVB19) infection. The patient presented with complaints of fever, chest pain, fatigue, and shortness of breath. On physical examination, she had tachycardia, hepatomegaly, and muffled heart sounds. Teleradiography exhibited cardiomegaly and echocardiography showed a pericardial effusion of 25 mm. Serum anti-PVB19 IgM and PVB19 DNA were positive. The patient developed anemia and reticulocytopenia in the second week, both of which persisted for two weeks then resolve

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the frequency of parvovirus B19 infection in first-trimester fetal loss, as measured by B19 DNA polymerase chain reaction in placental tissue in a prospective descriptive study from a nonendemic area.
METHODS: Placental tissues from first-trimester fetal losses were examined for presence of B19 DNA by polymerase chain reaction in a prospective study during 30 months. For comparison, placental tissues from second-trimester fetal losses, as well as from full-term normal pregnancies, were also studied.
RESULTS: B19 DNA was detected by polymerase chain reaction in one o

The pathogenicity of the human parvovirus B19 has been disclosed in the last two decades. Different syndromes (erythema infectiosum or hydrops fetalis) can be produced by this virus as well as aplastic crisis in patients with haemolytic anaemia. It is a common infection both in adults and in children. The frequency of joint symptoms in erythema infectiosum is about 8% in childhood but tenfold of it in the adults. However, the arthropathy could be the only symptom without constitutional complains or rash. The joint problems used to be solved after some weeks in most cases but occasionally they

We describe the development of a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique used to detect human parvovirus B19 DNA. It was performed in a two-step reaction, first with a pair of outer primers, then with a pair of inner (ie, nested) primers. Primer sequences were selected in the VP1 gene, corresponding to the capsid protein, of human parvovirus B19. To establish the nested PCR assay, the plasmid pGEM-1 containing almost the entire coding sequence of a human parvovirus B19 isolate was used. The nested PCR could detect up to 1.8 x 10(-3) ag of B19 DNA, equivalent to 10(-4) genomes, by elec

Parvovirus B19, one of the most common human pathogens, is a small DNA virus that belongs to the Parvoviridae As a result of previous infections, antibodies to B19 are present in most adults. B19 has a strong tropism to erythroid progenitor cells and is able to cause a series of medical conditions, including fifth disease, arthritis, myocarditis, hydrops fetalis, and aplastic crisis. No approved vaccine is currently available for B19, and there is a lack of structural characterization of any B19 epitopes. Here we present the first cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of a B19 virus-lik

The contribution of parvovirus B19 (B19V) as a causative agent of febrile exanthema (FE) in Cordoba, Argentina, was analysed by detection of viral DNA, and specific IgM and IgG. Serum from 141 patients with FE who were negative for measles and rubella, collected during 2005-2009, plus serum from 31 healthy individuals, were assayed. B19V was the aetiological agent in 14·9% of all FE cases, and in 39·1% in an epidemic year (2007). B19V DNA was detected in 47·6% of IgM-positive FE patients, 30·2% of IgM-negative/IgG-positive FE patients, and 9·7% of healthy controls, indicating B19V long-term in

BACKGROUND: It is important to investigate a possible cross-reaction of anti-rubella IgM in the IDEIA Parvovirus B19 IgM test because many B19 infections are either asymptomatic or have clinical symptoms similar to those of rubella virus infections. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) IgM, cytomegalovirus (CMV) IgM, measles IgM and rheumatoid factor (RF) IgM cross-reactions were also studied.
OBJECTIVES: In the period from February to September 1994 (including a parvovirus B19 epidemic) more than 10,000 serum samples were examined for parvovirus B19 IgM in Denmark. This gave an opportunity to evaluate t

A cocktail of 10 oligonucleotides selected at intervals along the length of the genome of human parvovirus B19 was labelled enzymically with digoxigenin and chemically with either digoxigenin (DIG) or dinitrophenyl (DNP). Chemical labelling was easier and more practical for the production of large quantities of probe. Pools labelled with either digoxigenin or DNP could detect 10 fg of B19 DNA in a dot blot reaction using an alkaline phosphatase antibody conjugate and colorimetric detection. Formalin fixed tissue from 11 consecutive cases of fetal hydrops were examined by in situ hybridisation

Intrauterine infection of human parvovirus B19 has recently been identified as an etiology for nonimmune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) and fetal death. To examine the frequency of B19 infection in cases of NIHF, forty two cases of NIHF of unknown cause were tested for the presence of B19 antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and B19 DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Three maternal sera were positive for B19 IgM antibody and one fetal serum was positive for B19 DNA. Overall, four (10%) of the 42 cases were positive for B19 infection. All of the four cases positive for B19 infec

The risk of human parvovirus B19(B19) infection in pregnant women, the relationship between B19 and early spontaneous abortion, and the pathogenesis of non-immune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) due to B19 infection were studied. 1) After the period of prevalence of erythema infectiosum(EI) between 1986 and 1987, the positive rate of anti B19 IgG antibody by sandwich ELISA in the sera from subjects aged 15-34 years old was 17-26%. This indicates that about 80% of pregnant women could be at the risk of B19 infection in future EI prevalence within ten years. 2) IgM antibody assayed by capture ELISA was p
