Severe Pasteurella multocida Infection in a Neonate: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Pasteurella multocida is a well-known cause of skin and soft tissue infections resulting from animal bites. The patient was a newborn male with no perinatal abnormalities except for a cephalohematoma on the left parietal region. At 10 days of age, he had a bite wound to the cephalohematoma from an indoor dog. The wound was very mild and there was no bleeding. At 12 days of age, he visited a local hospital with a fever and poor feeding. At presentation, he was in septic shock and was transferred to the intensive care unit of the hospital. On day three of hospitalization, P. multocida was identi

Dissecting aortitis in a goat associated with Pasteurella multocida and Staphylococcus spp infection.

Reports of primary cardiovascular disease in goats are rare and most commonly include ventricular septal defect, valvular endocarditis, traumatic pericarditis, ionophore poisoning and nutritional cardiomyopathies. We now report the pathological findings in a 67 kg, 6-year-old, adult female Boer goat that presented with neurological signs (ie, head pressing, unsteadiness and paddling) and hyperthermia 2 days prior to death. Lack of therapeutic response to meloxicam and penicillin‒streptomycin and poor prognosis led to euthanasia of the animal. At necropsy, the main findings included severe aort

RACK1 mediates NLRP3 inflammasome activation during Pasteurella multocida infection.

Pasteurella multocida is a gram-negative bacterium that causes serious diseases in a wide range of animal species. Inflammasomes are intracellular multimolecular protein complexes that play a critical role in host defence against microbial infection. Our previous study showed that bovine P. multocida type A (PmCQ2) infection induces NLRP3 inflammasome activation. However, the exact mechanism underlying PmCQ2-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation is not clear. Here, we show that NLRP3 inflammasome activation is positively regulated by a scaffold protein called receptor for activated C kinase 1

Comparative pharmacokinetics of florfenicol in healthy and Pasteurella multocida-infected Gaoyou ducks.

Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of fowl cholera, and florfenicol (FF) has potent antibacterial activity against P. multocida and is widely used in the poultry industry. In this study, we established a P. multocida infection model in ducks and studied the pharmacokinetics of FF in serum and lung tissues after oral administration of 30 mg/kg bodyweight. The maximum concentrations reached (Cmax) were lower in infected ducks (13.88 ± 2.70 μg/ml) vs. healthy control animals (17.86 ± 1.57 μg/ml). In contrast, the mean residence time (MRT: 2.35 ± 0.13 vs. 2.27 ± 0.18 hr) and elimination

Pathology of experimental infection by Pasteurella multocida serotype A: 1 in buffalo calves.

Pasteurella multocida serotype A:3 has been mostly implicated in pneumonic pasteurellosis in ruminants. In contrast, our previous studies have reported that both serotypes A:1 and A:3 were responsible for respiratory diseases in cattle and buffaloes. However, the pathology and pathogenesis of P. multocida serotype A:1 (Pm A:1) infection have not been studied in ruminants. In the present study, 12- to 15-week-old buffalo calves (Bubalus bubalis) infected by Pm A:1 had fibrinous and suppurative bronchopneumonia with focal areas of coagulation necrosis typical of pneumonic pasteurellosis. For the

Septicaemia and arthritis in pigs experimentally infected with Pasteurella multocida capsular serotype A.

Twenty-five caesarean-derived, colostrum-deprived (CDCD) pigs and 18 specific pathogen-free pigs, aged 8 to 14 weeks, were inoculated intranasally or intratracheally with Pasteurella multocida capsular serotype A, isolated from a severe pneumonic lesion in a growing pig. The pigs were killed for necropsy on day 6 or 14 post-inoculation (PI) or, in the case of the only fatally infected animal, examined at the time of death. One CDCD pig, inoculated intratracheally with 5 ml of a bacterial suspension containing 1.7x10(9) colony-forming-units/ml, died of septicaemia on day 1 PI. Histological lesi

Pasteurella multocida infection of a total hip arthroplasty following cat scratch.

Pasteurella multocida is a well recognized cause of sepsis following animal contact particularly bites and scratches. Spread to prosthetic joints may occur particularly in immunocompromised patients. Immunocompromised patients with prosthetic joints should be warned that animals are potential sources of serious infection and urgent medical advice should be sought if bitten or scratched.

Atrophic rhinitis in New Zealand white rabbits infected with Pasteurella multocida.

Atrophic rhinitis was detected in New Zealand White rabbits when upper respiratory tract disease was evaluated during a vaccine field trial for the prevention of pasteurellosis. Of 52 adult rabbits euthanatized and necropsied, 26 (50%) had evidence of turbinate atrophy. Atrophy was detected in 77% of rabbits with Pasteurella multocida infection only, 71% of rabbits with concurrent P multocida and Bordetella bronchiseptica infections, and 6% of rabbits with B bronchiseptica infection only. Grossly, turbinate atrophy was characterized by a mild to severe loss or diminution in the maxilloturbinat

[Morphogenesis and some problems of the pathogenesis of experimental Pasteurella infection in white mice].

The authors present materials on the study of the principal stages of morphogenesis of experimental pasteurellosis infection in albino mice in subcutaneous, intraperitoneal and intranasal infection. Particular attention was paid to the interrelations in the organism between the cells realizing the protective functions and the causative agent. It was established that the highly-virulent P. multocida strain was capable of intracellular reproduciton in the cells of the macrophage type. It was demonstrated that the protective course of infection was largely determined by its high rate of reproduct

Canine adenovirus type 1 and Pasteurella pneumotropica co‑infection in a puppy.

In 2008, a 2 months-old male German shepherd was presented with fever, depression, and evident organic wasting. The puppy died within 48 hours after the onset of clinical signs. A complete necropsy was performed. Bacteriological examination of samples from the brain, lung, liver, spleen, and bone marrow tested positive for Pasteurella pneumotropica. Histopathology demonstrated inflammatory and vascular lesions in the central nervous system and internal organs. Canine adenovirus type 1 nucleic acid was detected by polymerase chain reaction in the frozen brain but not in the formalin-fixed, para

Pasteurella multocida infection, a rare cause of mycotic abdominal aortic aneurysm.

A 64-year-old man was admitted with abdominal pain 6 weeks after treatment with intravenous flucloxacillin for cellulitis of his right leg. Urgent operation was necessary for a mycotic aneurysm of the abdominal aorta due to infection with Pasteurella multocida, a microorganism residing in the oral cavity of domestic animals that very rarely causes infection of native arteries or grafts. The aorta was repaired with a rifampin-coated tube graft. Despite postoperative duodenal perforation, abdominal Candida infections, wound dehiscence, and renal insufficiency, the patient is alive 1 year postope

Rapidly progressive and lethal septicemia due to infection with Pasteurella multocida in an infant.

We report a case of rapidly progressive pneumonia and meningoencephalitis in a 2-month-old breastfed infant. Culture of cerebrospinal fluid was positive for Pasteurella multocida. No bite or scratch injury as site of entrance could be detected clinically or at autopsy, therefore aerogenic transmission in droplets from a household pet must be considered. Infections with P. multocida have been frequently reported in infants and elderly people; however, rapidly progressive and lethal infections in infants have been described only rarely. These infections must be regarded as preventable through ad

Lymphocyte subpopulations in peripheral blood of lambs experimentally infected with Pasteurella haemolytica.

The lymphocyte subpopulations in peripheral blood obtained from eleven lambs experimentally infected with Pasteurella haemolytica were compared with those obtained from eight control lambs by flow cytometry, using a panel of monoclonal antibodies against specific lymphocyte epitopes. Experimental infection with P. haemolytica was characterized by a transient but significant reduction in SBU-T1+ (CD5+) T cells and SBU-T4+ (CD4+ or helper) T lymphocytes (P less than 0.05) and a significant rise in lymphocytes which did not express the LCA p220 epitope and the pan T cell surface marker (CD5-LCA p

Pseudorabies virus infection increases the permeability of the mammalian respiratory barrier to facilitate Pasteurella multocida infection.

UNLABELLED: Interaction between viruses and bacteria during the development of infectious diseases is a complex question that requires continuous study. In this study, we explored the interactions between pseudorabies virus (PRV) and Pasteurella multocida (PM), which are recognized as the primary and secondary agents of porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC), respectively. In vivo tests using mouse models demonstrated that intranasal inoculation with PRV at a sublethal dose induced disruption of murine respiratory barrier and promoted the invasion and damages caused by PM through respirato

An autopsy case of infective aortic aneurysm with Pasteurella multocida infection: clinicopathological appearance and a review of literatures.

Here, we showed our clinicopathological findings of infected aortic aneurysm (IAA) with Pasteurella multocida, which is a Gram-negative coccobacillus and is part of the normal oral flora of many animals. The patient was a 76-year-old male animal owner with a history of diabetes mellitus, alcoholic liver damage, and laryngeal cancer. He died 16 days after admission without undergoing operation because of poor general condition. Autopsy showed saccular outpouching with loss of the existing aortic wall and marked neutrophilic infiltration in the suprarenal abdominal aorta. Rupture was not evident

Clinical, Pathological, and Antimicrobial Characteristics of Pasteurella multocida Infections in Extensively Reared Rabbits in Western Romania.

Pasteurellosis is a major bacterial disease of domestic rabbits, commonly associated with respiratory disorders, abscesses, reproductive pathology, and systemic infections. This study investigated the occurrence, clinical manifestations, pathological lesions, and antimicrobial susceptibility of bacterial isolates obtained from rabbits raised in traditional extensive systems in western Romania, with identification of Pasteurella multocida performed using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). A total of 308 rabbits from 23 holdings were clin

Treatment of Pasteurella multocida infection with dressings containing honey and antibacterials: a case report.

Infections secondary to Pasteurella multocida frequently occur in patients who have been exposed to domestic pets. Human infections caused by Pasteurella multocida vary in severity, and clinical features include localised cellulitis, osteomyelitis, systemic bacteraemia, meningitis and pneumonia. No vaccine has been developed against Pasteurella multocida; it is treated with antibacterial agents and, in most cases, surgical intervention. This article discusses the authors' experience in treating a woman with severe cellulitis and osteomyelitis on her hand caused by Pasteurella multocida. She re

Pasteurella multocida infected total knee arthroplasty: a case report and review of the literature.

Pasteurella multocida is a rare cause of prosthetic joint infection. This infection generally follows significant animal contact, usually licks and scratches. We report a case of P multocida infection that was treated with linezolid with salvage of the implant. Linezolid is generally active against Gram-positive organisms only with the exception of Pasteurella, which is Gram-negative. We extensively review the previous reported cases of implant infection with P multocida.
