Fatal multifocal Pasteurella multocida infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: In humans, Pasteurella multocida infections are usually limited to the soft tissues surrounding a lesion. However, P. multocida can also cause systemic infections (such as pneumonia, lung abscess, peritonitis, endocarditis, meningitis and sepsis)-especially in patients with other underlying medical conditions. CASE PRESENTATION: We report on a case of fulminant P. multocida bacteremia at several sites (soft tissues, endocarditis and joints) on a white European man. Despite surgery and intensive medical care, the patient died. CONCLUSIONS: The present case emphasizes the importanc

Characterization of Pasteurella multocida strains isolated from geese.

Phenotypic and genotypic diversity of forty-two Pasteurella multocida isolates from geese were characterized by analysis of their capsular type, Heddleston serotype, biotype, fimbrial gene allele type, comparative outer membrane protein (OMP) electrophoresis patterns, and were analyzed using PCR for the presence of virulence-associated genes (toxA, tbpA, pfhA, hgbA, hgbB, nanH, nanB, fimA, hsf-1, and pmHAS). A sequence comparison of the thdF and rpoB housekeeping genes of twenty representative P. multocida strains from three different OMP groups demonstrated that seventeen strains were closely

Pasteurella multocida-infected expanded polytetrafluoroethylene hemodialysis access graft.

Infections are among the risks related to prosthetic hemodialysis access grafts. However, dialysis access graft infections caused by Pasteurella multocida have not been reported previously. We report a case of a P. multocida-infected nonfunctioning expanded polytetrafluoroethylene graft in the forearm after a cat bite. At surgery, the graft was completely unincorporated and was completely excised. Operative culture results were positive for P. multocida, a common oral flora found in cats and dogs. The patient was treated with intravenous ceftriaxone, and the wounds healed with local care.

Bacteremic community-acquired pneumonia due to Pasteurella multocida.

An 87-year-old man was admitted to hospital because of fever, productive cough, dyspnea and altered consciousness. His medical history was significant for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He owned several pets. Physical examination and a chest radiograph revealed right upper lobe pneumonia. Blood cultures taken on admission yielded Pasteurella multocida and antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed susceptibility to beta-lactams. The fever subsided four days after treatment with intravenous ceftriaxone and the patient was discharged in a very good clinical condition after two weeks of

[Pasteurella multocida infection of cavitated lung squamous carcinoma].

Pasteurella multocida has rarely been reported to cause lung disease in humans. Infection usually arises from bites or scratches from animal carriers of the pathogen. Cases of pneumonia, lung abscess, airway infection or infection of pre-existing bronchiectasis have been described, usually in individuals who are in direct contact with carrier animals and who have a chronic debilitating disease. It is unusual for P. multocida to be ingested and appear among oropharyngeal flora in humans. We report the first case published (Medline search 1966-2002) of a cavitated lung with squamous carcinoma th

Pasteurella multocida septicaemia in fallow deer (Dama dama).

Thirteen of 100 fallow deer, aged between 6 months and 10 years, died over a 5 week period. The deaths occurred in 2 outbreaks 3 weeks apart. Both outbreaks were preceded by at least 3 days of cold wet and windy weather, and were associated with water-logged pastures. Affected animals were usually found dead, with a frothy blood-stained nasal discharge. In the 8 deer necropsied, gross lesions included widespread subserosal petechial haemorrhages, severe pulmonary congestion and oedema with froth-filled airways, and fibrinous pneumonia and pleurisy in 4 deer. Two deer, also, had extensive subcu

[The first report of human chronic sinusitis by Pasteurella multocida subsp. multocida in Japan].

A 53-year-old male visited our hospital due to nasal obstruction persisting for 6 months and constant rhinorrhea. Pasteurella multocida subsp. multocida was isolated from his nasal discharge and lavage fluid of the maxillary sinus, and also from the oral cavity of the dog he kept. The bacterial strains isolated from the patient and dog were identical in terms of biochemical properties, and drug sensitivity. Although serotype was different, the strain from the patient showed (A:6) and that from his dog showed (A:5). The microorganism is not present in the general environment. The patient had co

Epiglottitis Caused by Pasteurella multocida: An Uncommon Presentation.

Pasteurella multocida is commonly associated with skin and soft tissue infections after animal bites and is rarely associated with epiglottitis, which is a life-threatening condition. Here, we describe a patient with epiglottitis secondary to Pasteurella infection and bacteremia who required transnasal fiberoptic intubation and was treated with intravenous (IV) ampicillin-sulbactam, who responded well to the treatment with complete resolution of symptoms.

An unusual case of Pasteurella multocida bacteremic meningitis.

Pasteurella multocida is a rare cause of bacterial meningitis, more frequently affecting humans at the extremes of age. We report a case of meningitis and bacteremia caused by P. multocida in a 67-year-old diabetic woman who was living with 10 cats. She didn't have any animal bites or scratches, but she reported kissing the pets in the mouth. The outcome was favorable following antimicrobial treatment. Although rarely encountered, P. multocida should be considered as a possible cause of meningitis, particularly when Gram-negative coccobacilli are revealed in the cerebrospinal fluid and a histo

Pasteurella multocida pneumonia with hemoptysis: A case report.

Pasteurella multocida, which colonizes upper respiratory and digestive tracts, is a leading cause of respiratory diseases in many host species. Here, we describe a case of P. multocida pneumonia with hemoptysis. A 72-year-old female diagnosed with bronchiectasis with a 36-year history presented with a worsened infiltrative and granular shadow in the lower right lobe and lingular segment. Bronchial lavage fluid culturing suggested Pasteurella pneumonia. P. multocida was confirmed by 16S rRNA sequencing. The patient was readmitted to our hospital because of hemoptysis, and she was treated succes

A Case of Polyarticular Pasteurella multocida Septic Arthritis.

A 76-year-old man with a history of osteoarthritis presents with right leg erythema and inability to weight-bear and pain in his right shoulder. Synovial fluid cell count of the knee and shoulder showed abundant neutrophils, and cultures of the knee showed growth of Pasteurella multocida. The patient owned four cats with which he had frequent contact, but history and physical examination elicited no evidence of scratches or bites. This case highlights the invasive potential of Pasteurella multocida in an immunocompetent individual and its capacity to cause septic arthritis in the setting of fr

Clinical Features and Outcomes of Pasteurella multocida Infection.

Pasteurella multocida, a zoonotic infectious organism, has most often been described in patients after an animal bite. Here, we characterize the clinical features and outcomes of P multocida infection in a large cohort of patients according to the presence or absence of an animal bite.We retrospectively searched MUSC's laboratory information system for all patients with positive P multocida cultures from 2000 to 2014. Extensive data were abstracted, including clinical and outcome data. The Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) was used to assess comorbidities among patients. We identified 44 patient

Pasteurella multocida tenosynovitis of the hand: sonographic findings.

Pasteurella multocida is a common cause of infection in humans subsequent to bites or scratches by dogs and, particularly, cats. This infection usually results in superficial skin and soft tissue infections. Sonography can be used for diagnosing inflammatory conditions affecting tendons, including acute and chronic tenosynovitis. P. multocida tenosynovitis is rare, and the diagnosis can be missed if adequate tests are not performed. We report 2 cases of P. multocida tenosynovitis of the hand and wrist in which sonography played a valuable role in assessing the affected tissues and guiding fine

The effect of hypovitaminosis A on the pathogenesis of Pasteurella multocida in turkeys.

It has been proposed that Pasteurella multocida can invade the host tissues via the mucous membrane. Vitamin A (VitA) deficiency has been associated with mucous membrane damage, such as squamous metaplasia. The objective of this study was to determine the early stages in the pathogenesis of P. multocida in VitA-deficient turkeys and clinically healthy turkeys. Fifteen-week-old VitA-deficient and clinically healthy turkeys were inoculated with P. multocida P-1059, a virulent strain, and the portal of entry, invasion, and localization of P. multocida were studied by microbial examination of the

Pasteurella multocida meningitis in an adult: case report.

Pasteurella multocida is known to form part of the normal flora in the nasopharynx or gastrointestinal tract in many domestic and wild animals. Most human P multocida infections are soft tissue infections caused by dog or cat bites. Less commonly this bacterium is associated with infections affecting other organ systems of man. A case of fatal P multocida meningitis discovered at the necropsy of a 52 year old man is described. P multocida is an unusual causative agent of meningitis which tends to affect those at the extremes of age.

Hemoptysis as the sole presentation of Pasteurella multocida infection.

Pasteurella multocida has been implicated as the cause of a variety of respiratory conditions (eg, bronchitis, pneumonia, lung abscess, empyema), but hemoptysis has been noted only in conjunction with other lung conditions. We report a case in which hemoptysis was the sole manifestation of Pasteurella infection. The patient was a middle-aged man with severe obstructive lung disease and exposure to cats. Diagnosis was made by bronchoscopy and high-dose penicillin was required for resolution.
