Paternal Jail Incarceration and Birth Outcomes: Evidence from New York City, 2010-2016.

OBJECTIVES: To examine population-level associations between paternal jail incarceration during pregnancy and infant birth outcomes using objective measures of health and incarceration. METHODS: We use multivariate logistic regression models and linked records on all births and jail incarcerations in New York City between 2010 and 2016. RESULTS: 0.8% of live births were exposed to paternal incarceration during pregnancy or at the time of birth. After accounting for parental sociodemographic characteristics, maternal health behaviors, and maternal health care access, paternal incarceration du

A longitudinal study of sexual risk behavior among the adolescent children of HIV-positive and HIV-negative drug-abusing fathers.

PURPOSE: This is a longitudinal study of the precursors of sexual risk behavior among a cohort of adolescent children of HIV-positive and HIV-negative drug-abusing or drug-dependent fathers. METHODS: Individual structured interviews were administered to 296 drug-abusing or drug-dependent fathers, 43% of whom were HIV positive, and an adolescent child of each father (mean age = 16.3 years; SD = 2.8). Adolescents were reinterviewed approximately 1 year later, at Time 2. RESULTS: Structural equation modeling showed multiple direct and indirect pathways from psychosocial factors to adolescent se

Gender differences in the transmission of risk for antisocial behavior problems across generations.

Previous studies have shown that children of alcohol use disorder (AUD) parents are more likely to develop alcohol problems as well as antisocial and other behavior problems. The purpose of this study was to examine gender discordance in the effect of early maternal and paternal influences on antisocial behaviors of boys and girls, as well as the environmental factors that moderate the parental effects. Specifically, we examined the effects of childhood and adulthood antisocial behavior of the parents on offspring antisocial behavior as young adults. We also examined whether mothers' and fathe

Paternal Postnatal Sense of Security as a Predictor of Fathers' Breastfeeding Support: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Paternal postnatal sense of security, referring to fathers' perceptions of role clarity, emotional reassurance, and support during the postpartum period, may be relevant to their active involvement in infant care and their influence on breastfeeding practices. METHODS: This cross-sectional correlational study included 103 fathers whose partners were in the early postpartum period. Data were collected using a personal information form, the Paternal Postnatal Sense of Security Scale, and the Partner Breastfeeding Influence Scale. Pearson and Spearman's rho correlations were used to

Elevated paternal glucocorticoid exposure alters the small noncoding RNA profile in sperm and modifies anxiety and depressive phenotypes in the offspring.

Recent studies have suggested that physiological and behavioral traits may be transgenerationally inherited through the paternal lineage, possibly via non-genomic signals derived from the sperm. To investigate how paternal stress might influence offspring behavioral phenotypes, a model of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation was used. Male breeders were administered water supplemented with corticosterone (CORT) for 4 weeks before mating with untreated female mice. Female, but not male, F1 offspring of CORT-treated fathers displayed altered fear extinction at 2 weeks of age.

Enhanced heroin analgesic effect in male offspring of sires who self-administered heroin.

Introduction: A growing body of evidence suggests that parental substance abuse, even prior to conception, may induce phenotypic changes in offspring. Parental opioid exposure has been shown to affect developmental processes, induce memory deficits, and lead to psycho-emotional disorders in offspring. However, how parental, especially paternal, chronic drug exposure affects offspring remains unexplored. Methods: Adult male rats were subjected to 31 days of heroin self-administration followed by mating with naïve females. Litter size and body weight of F1 offspring were recorded. Object-based a

Recall of parental behaviors in female neurotic depressives.

Twenty-four neurotic depressive females and 24 female anxiety neurotics were compared on a 90-item questionnaire that concerned recall of parental behavior. Relative to anxiety neurotics, the neurotic depressives recalled fathers as unloving disciplinarians and recalled mothers as difficult to please, intrusive and controlling, and possibly more concerned with their own than with their children's needs. Previous findings that parents of depressives are recalled as depriving were supported, and a methodology for differentiating neurotic depressives from anxiety neurotics was described.

The role of fathers in child development from preconception to postnatal influences: Opportunities for the National Institutes of Health Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program.

A growing body of literature highlights the important role of paternal health and socioemotional characteristics in child development, from preconception through adolescence. Much of this research addresses the indirect effects of fathers, for instance, their influence on maternal behaviors during the prenatal period or via the relationship with their partner. However, emerging evidence also recognizes the direct role of paternal health and behavior for child health and adjustment across development. This critical review presents evidence of biological and sociocultural influences of fathers o

Reciprocity Between Parental Psychopathology and Oppositional Symptoms From Preschool to Middle Childhood.

OBJECTIVE: Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a common disorder in preschool children. Evidence indicates that maternal and paternal psychopathology, particularly aggressive behavior and anxious and depressed symptoms, contributes to the development of this disorder. The latest research also suggests that ODD symptoms may exacerbate the mental health problems of parents. Our aim was to establish the existence of a reciprocal association between paternal and maternal psychopathology (aggression, depression, and anxiety) and child ODD at ages 3 and 8, using a longitudinal design in a communi

Characterizing the association between parenting and adolescent social phobia.

OBJECTIVES: For characterizing the association between parenting and offspring social phobia (SP), contrasting maternal vs. paternal contributions, putative predictors of unfavorable parenting behaviors and its specificity for SP are warranted to delineate targeted prevention and intervention strategies. METHODS: A population-based sample of 1053 adolescents was followed-up using the M-CIDI. Parenting was assessed via questionnaire in offspring passing the high risk period for SP-onset. Natal complications and childhood serious health problems as assessed by maternal reports were hypothesized

Paternal impact on the developmental programming of sexual dimorphism.

Sexual dimorphism involves distinct anatomical, physiological, behavioral, and developmental differences between males and females of the same species, influenced by factors prior to conception and during early development. These sex-specific traits contribute to varied phenotypes and individual disease risks within and across generations and understanding them is essential in mammalian studies. Hormones, sex chromosomes, and imprinted genes drive this dimorphism, with over half of quantitative traits in wildtype mice showing sex-based variation. This review focuses on the impact of paternal n

Spermatogenic timing, dose, and route of administration as determinants of paternal transmission of developmental neurotoxicity.

Growing evidence challenges the long-standing assumption that the paternal germline is insulated from environmental perturbation and identifies preconception paternal exposure as an underrecognized pathway of developmental neurotoxicity. Across mammalian models, paternal exposure to substances of abuse, including cocaine, nicotine, ethanol, morphine, and cannabinoids, induces reproducible, often sex-specific alterations in offspring brain function and behavior, including changes in cognition, stress responsivity, reward processing, and affective behaviors, accompanied by transcriptional and ep

Testes size seen through the glass of amphibian care.

Despite the great diversity of parental care types found in amphibians, studies linking them to post-copulatory sexually selected traits are scarce, presumably due to a lack of data. Valencia-Aguilar et al. used fieldwork and museum collections to show that paternal care appears to trade-off with testes size in glass frogs.

Behavioral Effects of Neuronal, Parent-specific Commd1 Knockout in Mice.

In this study we focused on gene expression and behavioral differences in mice with brain-specific Commd1 knockout. Commd1 is an imprinted gene with preferential maternal expression, residing within a larger genomic region previously found to affect sensorimotor gating. In this study, individuals harboring a conditional Commd1 mutant allele were bred with Syn1-Cre animals, paying special attention to the parent of origin of the Commd1 mutation. Analysis of mRNA levels of Commd1 and phenotypic tests, including the open field, sensorimotor gating, and the forced swim test, were conducted on offs

The role of oxytocin in male and female reproductive behavior.

Oxytocin (OT) is a nonapeptide with an impressive variety of physiological functions. Among them, the 'prosocial' effects have been discussed in several recent reviews, but the direct effects on male and female sexual behavior did receive much less attention so far. As our contribution to honor the lifelong interest of Berend Olivier in the control mechanisms of sexual behavior, we decided to explore the role of OT in the present review. In the successive sections, some physiological mechanisms and the 'pair-bonding' effects of OT will be discussed, followed by sections about desire, female ap

The psychological distress of parents is associated with reduced linear growth of children: Evidence from a nationwide population survey.

BACKGROUND: Stunting, an indicator of restricted linear growth, has become a primary measure of childhood undernutrition due to its persistent high prevalence globally, and importance for health and development. Although the etiology is recognized as complex, most analyses have focused on social and biomedical determinants, with limited attention on psychological factors affecting care and nurturing in the home. We assessed whether the psychological distress of parents is related to child linear growth and stunting, and documented the associated risk factors, and examined the relationship betw

The association of preconception and prenatal cannabis and tobacco exposure with autism symptoms in offspring: A population-based longitudinal study.

Prenatal cannabis and tobacco exposure is associated with attention and behavior problems in children, while associations with autism symptoms remain unclear. We prospectively examined whether parental cannabis and tobacco use during pregnancy were associated with childhood autism symptoms. Information on parental cannabis and tobacco use was assessed using questionnaires, and maternal cannabis metabolites were detected via urinalysis. We measured autistic symptoms using two mother-reported instruments: Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) at ages 1.5, 3, and 6; and Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS

Parental Weight Status and Offspring Behavioral Problems and Psychiatric Symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: To assess relations of prepregnancy maternal and paternal obesity with offspring behavioral problems and psychiatric symptoms at 7-8 years in the Upstate KIDS study, a prospective cohort study. STUDY DESIGN: Maternal body mass index (BMI) was calculated from prepregnancy height and weight provided in vital records or self-report at 4 months postpartum. Mothers reported paternal height and weight. At 7-8 years, mothers indicated if their children had been diagnosed with ADHD or anxiety (n = 1915). Additionally, children's behavior was measured with the Strengths and Difficulties Qu

Metabolic rate and energy balance in very low birth weight infants during kangaroo holding by their mothers and fathers.

The aim of the study was to compare effects of maternal and paternal kangaroo care on oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, energy expenditure, skin and rectal temperatures, heart and respiratory rates, arterial saturation, and behavioral states. Eleven preterm infants with gestational age of 28 to 31 weeks, birth weight of 560 to 1390 gm, and postnatal age of 8 to 48 days were studied before, during, and after maternal and paternal kangaroo care. Skin temperature (lower leg) increased significantly during both maternal (36.2 +/- 0.9 degrees vs 36.9 +/- 1.2 degrees C) and paternal (36
