De novo trisomy 20p of paternal origin.

We report on a case of a de novo trisomy 20p in a 5-year-old boy. The patient presented with dysmorphic features, mental retardation, poor coordination, cardiac malformation, kyphosis, hypospadias, cryptorchidism, and preaxial hexadactyly. No growth delay was noticed. Standard karyotype and FISH techniques allowed the characterization of the chromosome rearrangement showing a duplication spanning almost the whole short arm of chromosome 20. Therefore the karyotype was interpreted as 46,XY,der(20)(pter --> q13.3::p11.2 --> pter). Molecular studies identified the duplication of paternal origin.

Genetic counselling following paternal therapeutic irradiation.

We discuss a patient who received adjuvant radiotherapy for stage I seminoma. He was advised to avoid conception for 6 months following treatment. However, his partner became pregnant only shortly after he completed his radiotherapy (i.e. with sperm that had been irradiated). We estimated the dose received by the remaining testis as 30 cGy. Here, we review the information available to advise patients on the risks to the fetus from paternal preconception irradiation. For the population, a doubling dose for hereditary effects of 1 Gy has recently been reaffirmed (United Nations Scientific Commit

[What are the epidemiological data on maternal and paternal smoking?].

A review of the literature published over the last fifteen years shows that active smoking (1.54 [95% CI 1.19-2.01]) and passive smoking (1.17 [95% CI1.02-1.37]) are the cause of a decline in female fertility in the general population. This lower fertility is particularly evident for in vitro fecundation where the relative risk of infertility measured in one study was 2.41 (95% CI 1.07-5.45) and even 4.27 (95% CI 1.53-11.97) if the couple has smoked for five years. Paternal smoking at the time of IVF decreases the number of ovocytes by 46% due to maternal passive smoking. The risk of not havin

Prenatal findings in trisomy 16q of paternal origin.

A 34-year-old pregnant woman was referred at 30 weeks of gestation with suspected fetal congenital heart disease. On prenatal ultrasound the following anomalies were detected: intra-uterine growth retardation, micrognathia, coarctation of the aorta with ventricular and atrial septal defects, ambiguous external genitalia, and clinodactyly of one hand with adducted thumb. Prenatal karyotyping was offered but refused by the patient. The fetus was delivered by Caesarean section due to fetal distress at 36 weeks of gestation. The neonate, weighing 2150 g was transferred to the neonatal intensive ca

Paternal Occupational Lead Exposure and Pregnancy Outcome.

Self-reported reproductive histories of male employees of a lead-zinc smelter were related to pre-conception measures of lead exposure to examine associations between paternal occupational lead exposure and adverse pregnancy outcome. The participants reported 2,021 pregnancies which resulted in 1,684 normal live births, 12 stillbirths, 30 birth defects, 203 spontaneous abortions, and 92 "other" outcomes. Birth defects and stillbirths were combined for the analysis. The risk of a stillbirth or birth defect was elevated for pre-conception employment in a high-lead-exposure compared with a low-le

Paternity after unilateral cryptorchidism: a controlled study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if paternity is decreased among formerly unilateral cryptorchid men compared with a control group of men. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Formerly unilateral cryptorchid men who had orchiopexy between 1955 and 1971 at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and a group of control men have had their medical records reviewed and have been surveyed by questionnaire. RESULTS: Among the men who had ever married and had attempted paternity, significantly more of the unilateral cryptorchid men had been unable to father children (10.5%) than among the control group (5.4%). No difference

Anomalous inheritance of a paternally derived trophoblast antigen.

PROBLEM: Recurrent spontaneous abortion occurs in 1 in 500 random matings and usually results in abortion of all pregnancies. If absence of antibody to a paternally derived antigen caused abortion, the woman would be expected to make antibody to the other paternal antigen and abort only half her pregnancies. METHODS: Microvesicles were prepared from equine placentae. Acid-eluted IgG antibody was eluted from the polymorphic R80K antigen and used to type the residual R80K antigen on vesicles or on peripheral blood leucocytes. RESULTS: In several equine sibships all the half-sibs had the same p

Paternal leucocyte immunotherapy for recurrent pregnancy loss.

The defective recognition of foetal alloantigens by the maternal immune system is associated with recurrent pregnancy failure and may be prevented by boosting the maternal immune response with paternal or third party leucocyte immunization. The mechanism by which this process achieves success is not known. Clinical trials on recurrent spontaneous abortion have shown an up to 70% successful pregnancy rate after immunotherapy but the importance of this is unclear because there have been success rates of between 29% and 76% even in the control population. These variations could be due to small sa

Paternal occupation and risk of birth defects in offspring.

Several epidemiologic studies indicate that some paternal occupations are associated with an increased risk of birth defects in offspring. We evaluated this relation using data from a population-based case-control study. Cases are infants with a major birth defect registered with the Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program between 1968 and 1980. We selected controls from livebirths in the Atlanta area using frequency matching for race, year, and hospital of birth. Case and control parents were interviewed to solicit information on several factors, including occupation. We classified pa

A case of paternal uniparental disomy for chromosome 11.

We report a case of paternal uniparental disomy for chromosome 11 that presented as severe intrauterine growth retardation. Autopsy following intrauterine death also revealed aberrant intestinal rotation and hypospadias. Chromosome analysis of direct preparations from placental biopsy showed an abnormal 47,XY,+11 karyotype. Analysis of long-term cultures from the placenta revealed 46,XY/47,XY,+11 mosaicism. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) studies on interphase nuclei confirmed trisomy 11 in multiple placental sites but detected only disomic cells in fetal skin. Investigation using mi

Paternal effects of ethanol in the long-evans rat.

Ten male Long-Evans rats were given 20% v/v ethanol in the drinking water for 60 consecutive days. Ten other males were given distilled water and served as controls. Each male was then allowed to mate with three virgin female Long-Evans rats, once per week for three consecutive weeks. The males were necropsied after the third mating, the females were killed on d 20 of gestation, and the offspring were examined for parameters of fetal growth, skeletal ossification, and soft-tissue anomalies. Ethanol caused testicular weight reductions and gross testicular atrophy in 1 of 10 males. Five matings

Paternal behavior is controlled by preoptic Trpc5 neurons.

Male parenting behavior is highly conserved and activated only after offspring are born. Here we show that the behavioral switch from infanticide in virgin male mice to caregiving in wild-type sires is associated with enhanced expression and activation of Transient receptor potential channel 5 (Trpc5) in estrogen receptor α (Esr1)-expressing neurons in the hypothalamic medial preoptic area (MPOA). While selective deletion of Trpc5 from Esr1MPOA neurons diminishes paternal behavior in sires, overexpression of Trpc5 in these neurons converts the otherwise infanticidal virgin males to exhibit car

The Influence of Maternal and Paternal Race on Perinatal Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine associations between maternal-paternal racial pairings and adverse perinatal outcomes in the United States. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective population-based cohort study using 2016-2023 U.S. birth certificate data from the CDC National Vital Statistics System. Singleton live births with complete data on maternal and paternal race were included. Parental race was categorized as non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, or Asian, resulting in 16 racial dyads. Outcomes included preterm birth (PTB, <37 weeks), hypertensive disorders of pre

[Teratovigilance. Antiepileptics during pregnancy and paternal use].

The 2023-2024 updates on teratovigilance, with a focus on antiseizure medications, highlight several key points. American medical societies have revised their recommendations: maintaining effective seizure control is essential for both maternal and fetal health; lamotrigine, levetiracetam, and oxcarbazepine are preferred first-line treatments, whereas valproic acid and topiramate should be avoided if possible. In March 2024, an update on topiramate indicated an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders with prenatal exposure. For autism spectrum disorders specifically, a recent study did

Functional Consequences Paternal Preconceptual Alcohol Consumption.

Alcohol is the most harmful drug of abuse, making alcoholism a major economic and public health crisis. Unsurprisingly, this has led to the majority of the neurobiological research on alcohol focusing on its direct effects on an individual, including those affected by foetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). However, research has shown that heavy paternal drinking predicts earlier and heavier adolescent drinking in the offspring, accompanied by other behavioural and molecular changes. While alcohol use disorder (AUD) is highly heritable, research on genetic variants alone does not sufficient

Paternity After Treatment of Cryptorchidism: A Systematic Review.

Background: Male infertility can arise from various causes, accounting for 30-50% of infertility cases. The aim of this systematic review is to establish paternity outcomes in men treated for cryptorchidism during childhood, and to evaluate the optimal age for surgical intervention in relation to fertility. Methods: This systematic review is conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines and registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251010710). The electronic databases Medline, Embase, and PubMed were searched for eligible studies from 1990 to February 2025. All types of original published human studies exa

Paternal impact on the developmental programming of sexual dimorphism.

Sexual dimorphism involves distinct anatomical, physiological, behavioral, and developmental differences between males and females of the same species, influenced by factors prior to conception and during early development. These sex-specific traits contribute to varied phenotypes and individual disease risks within and across generations and understanding them is essential in mammalian studies. Hormones, sex chromosomes, and imprinted genes drive this dimorphism, with over half of quantitative traits in wildtype mice showing sex-based variation. This review focuses on the impact of paternal n

Paternity bias and cryptic female choice in chickens.

Sperm competition and cryptic female choice (CFC) are 2 significant mechanisms of postcopulatory sexual selection that greatly impact fertilization success in various species. Despite extensive research has conducted on sperm competition and the evolution of sperm traits in internal fertilization, our understanding of the female preferences in selecting sperm is still limited. Here, we aimed to investigate the characteristics of CFC in chickens by utilizing artificial insemination with mixed semen to control for variations in male fertilization success caused by female perception of male quali
