[Oration held at the occasion of the bestowal of the honorary doctor's degree to M. H. J. P Thomassen by the Senate of the University of Groningen on 21 June 1905].

Hamburger, former colleague of Thomassen at the Veterinary School in Utrecht, and then professor of Physiology in Groningen, reviewed the career and merits of Thomassen. After graduation as veterinary surgeon (Utrecht 1869) Thomassen developped a succesful veterinary practice in Maastricht, in the neighbourhood of which city he was born. He attracted attention by his publications in foreign veterinary journals. In 1881 he was appointed as clinical teacher at his old school. Next to internal medicine, his teachings encompassed diagnostics, general therapy, pharmacology and history of veterinary

Epidemiology of Four Major Canine Tumours in the UK: Insights From a National Pathology Registry With Comparative Oncology Perspectives.

Pet dogs with naturally occurring cancers provide valuable models for comparative oncology and pathology tumour registries offer a powerful resource for onco-epidemiological research. Here, we analysed the Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network (SAVSNET) pathology-based tumour registry (PTR), one of the largest veterinary tumour registries to date, focusing on four major canine tumours: mast cell tumour (MCT), osteosarcoma (OSA), haemangiosarcoma (HSA), and melanoma (MEL). A case-control study was conducted using a subset of 130 998 histologically confirmed tumours drawn from the patholo

Two cases of vaginal bleeding in pet rats.

Two unrelated rats were presented to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine emergency service for vaginal bleeding. Each was taken to surgery due to marked blood loss and suspicion of uterine pathology. Despite similar clinical presentation, gross and histopathologic examination revealed 2 different underlying disease processes, uterine dilatation with mild endometritis and vaginal polyp.

Cardiac involvement in European canine babesiosis - a pathological perspective.

Canine babesiosis is an important and potentially life-threatening disease of worldwide significance. European babesiosis encompasses all protozoan parasites of the genus Babesia that have been reported to cause canine disease in Europe. Despite its importance, cardiac pathology associated with European babesiosis remains poorly characterized. The aim of this study was to assess cardiac lesions in dogs that succumbed to European babesiosis. For this study, the archive of the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Zagreb, was retrospectively searched for necropsied d

Comparison of digital and optical microscopy for the evaluation of veterinary blood films: a preliminary study.

Digital microscopy is increasingly used in veterinary diagnostic pathology. However, limited independent research has been published on its use, especially for the purpose of evaluating blood films. Hence, determining the potential limits of blood film assessments obtained via digital microscopy is needed. We compared the agreement of digital and optical cytology for the detection of common cellular morphology changes and abnormalities in veterinary blood films. Twenty-two veterinary clinical pathologists and residents evaluated canine, feline, and equine blood films on glass slides via optica

Spinal arachnoid diverticula and constrictive myelopathy in dogs: different conditions or a spectrum of spinal meningeal disease in veterinary and human medicine?

Different conditions affecting the spinal meningeal layers have been reported in human and veterinary medicine. In veterinary medicine, two separate conditions have been reported. Spinal arachnoid diverticula (SAD) have been well documented for decades, while constrictive myelopathy (CM) in pugs was identified more recently. However, the distinction between SAD and CM in dogs can be challenging. There is a lack of understanding about the pathophysiology of these puzzling conditions, which impacts the ability to select the most appropriate treatment. In humans, four different spinal meningeal d

Artificial intelligence in veterinary diagnostic histopathology: Concepts, applications, and clinical implementation.

Artificial intelligence (AI) in human diagnostic histopathology has advanced rapidly, but clinical adoption has lagged behind research. Veterinary diagnostic pathology, being less regulated, could adopt AI faster, but the extent of its integration into diagnostic laboratories is unknown. This article combines a narrative introduction to key concepts, a scoping review of published applications, and an exploratory survey of diagnostic laboratories to provide an overview of AI in veterinary diagnostic histopathology. The narrative review highlights emerging approaches, including vision transforme

3D printing for surgical planning of canine oral and maxillofacial surgeries.

BACKGROUND: Advanced diagnostic imaging is an essential part of preoperative planning for oral and maxillofacial surgery in veterinary patients. 3-dimensional (3D) printed models and surgical guides generated from diagnostic imaging can provide a deeper understanding of the complex maxillofacial anatomy, including relevant spatial relationships. Additionally, patient-specific 3D printed models allow surgeons and trainees to better examine anatomical features through tactile and visuospatial feedback allowing for improved preoperative planning, intraoperative guidance, and enhanced trainee educ

World Small Animal Veterinary Association Global Dental Guidelines.

Dental, oral, and maxillofacial diseases are some of the most common problems in small animal veterinary practice. These conditions create significant pain as well as localized and potentially systemic infection. As such, the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) believes that un- and under treated oral and dental diseases pose a significant animal welfare concern. Dentistry is an area of veterinary medicine which is still widely ignored and is subject to many myths and misconceptions. Effective teaching of veterinary dentistry in the veterinary school is the key to progression in

Cystosonographic measurements of canine bladder tumours.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the variability of cystosonographic bladder tumor measurements with both operator and bladder volume changes. Ten dogs with bladder tumors were included. In each dog, three operators determined tumor dimensions for three different bladder volumes. Intraclass correlation coefficient was used to assess operator reliability. Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) and greater than or equal to 50% differences in tumor measurements were used as guidelines. Poor to fair correlations between operators were found for the different tumor dimension

The Omentum-A Forgotten Structure in Veterinary Surgery in Small Animals' Surgery.

The greater and lesser omentum are derived from embryonic mesogastrium. The expansive greater omentum in dogs covers intestinal coils, while in cats, it is smaller. Comprising distinct portions, the greater omentum is rich in lymphatics and blood vessels. Conversely, the lesser omentum spans the liver, stomach, and duodenum. Studies on canine omentum reveal unique immune cell composition and regenerative potential attributed to adipose tissue-derived stromal cells (ADSCs). These cells hold promise in regenerative medicine, showing enhanced abilities compared with ADSCs from other sources. The

Diseases of captive cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus jubatus) in South Africa: a 20-year retrospective survey.

As part of an ongoing study to determine the basis for high prevalences of veno-occlusive disease, glomerulosclerosis, and chronic lymphoplasmacytic gastritis in cheetahs, a retrospective pathology survey of captive cheetahs in the Republic of South Africa (RSA) was conducted. The RSA population was selected because its genetic composition and captive management were similar to those of the cheetah population in U.S. zoos, in which these diseases are common. For this study, archived pathology materials at the University of Pretoria Faculty of Veterinary Sciences in Onderstepoort and the Facult

Epulides in the dog: a review.

This article is based on a review of the literature and the study of pathology sections obtained from various veterinary pathology laboratories. Epulis is a non-specific, clinical designation for a localized, exophytic growth on the gingiva. Four reactive epulides occur in human beings, namely focal fibrous hyperplasia (fibrous epulis), pyogenic granuloma, peripheral giant cell granuloma (giant cell epulis), and peripheral ossifying fibroma (calcifying fibrous epulis). The first three also occur in dogs but only focal fibrous hyperplasia appears to be common. The peripheral ossifying fibroma h

Lung ultrasound for the diagnosis of subpleural consolidations - a review of the veterinary and human literature.

Lung ultrasound (LUS) is an imaging modality of growing importance in human medicine. LUS has been extensively applied to human patients. Guidelines have been created for internal medicine, describing ultrasonographic features of various lung pathologic processes. Such guidelines do not exist for veterinary medicine, and studies on the utility of LUS in companion animals are limited. Therefore, this review compares conclusions from veterinary studies to recommendations in human medicine for the detection of subpleural consolidations beyond the application of LUS as a point-of-care modality in

ABNORMALITIES OF THE FEMALE GENITAL ORGANS IN MINK HETEROZYGOUS FOR THE HEGGEDAL FACTOR (SHADOW FACTOR).

In Sapphire Shadow (aa pp SHs), Blue Shadow (AA pp SHs) and Blue Shadow Carrier for Aleutian (Aa pp SHs) a malformation of the female genital organs has been demonstrated and described. The malformations seem to be restricted to the areas which are formed by the Müllerian ducts and chiefly affect the vagina and cervix, corpus and cornua uteri, whilst the uterine tubes are as a rule normal. Among females which are empty after their first breeding season the frequency of these malformations was almost 42 % and among virginal young females 18.5 %. The abnormalities seem to be due to a pleiotropic

DENTAL AND ORAL PATHOLOGY IN TIGERS (PANTHERA TIGRIS) BASED ON ORAL EXAMINATION AND COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY.

Management of dental disease in non-domestic felids under managed care is integral to their overall health and welfare. Accurate evaluation of dental disease by zoo clinicians improves patient care and can influence the decision to utilize dental specialists to assist with complex procedures. Additionally, dental disease frequently occurs subgingivally and cannot be detected without the aid of dental radiography and/or advanced imaging, such as CT. This study aimed to describe the frequency and types of dental pathology observed in a cohort of 15 tigers (Panthera tigris) from a sanctuary, dete

Implication of the knowledge and perceptions of veterinary students of antimicrobial resistance for future prescription of antimicrobials in animal health, South Africa.

Understanding the knowledge and perceptions of veterinary students of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as potential future prescribers of antimicrobials may serve as an opportunity to improve stewardship of AMR. Pre-final (n = 42) and final (n = 29) year veterinary students of the University of Pretoria completed questionnaires to determine their knowledge and perceptions of AMR. Of the 71 respondents, mixed practice (48%) and small animal practice (45%) were the most preferred career choices post-graduation, with the field of gross pathology being the least preferred. Over 80% of the respondent

Using a smartphone-based digital fundus camera for screening of retinal and optic nerve diseases in veterinary medicine: A preliminary investigation.

BACKGROUND: Ophthalmoscopy is a valuable tool in clinical practice. We report the use of a novel smartphone-based handheld device for visualisation and photo-documentation of the ocular fundus in veterinary medicine. METHODS: Selected veterinary patients of a referral ophthalmology service were included if one or both eyes had clear ocular media, allowing for examination of the fundus. Following pharmacological mydriasis, fundic images were obtained with a handheld fundus camera (Volk VistaView). For comparison, the fundus of a subset of animals was also imaged with a veterinary-specific fund

Clinical presentation, auscultation recordings, ultrasonographic findings and treatment response of 12 adult cattle with chronic suppurative pneumonia: case study.

Auscultation is considered the critical component of the veterinary clinical examination for the diagnosis of bovine respiratory disease but the accuracy with which adventitious sounds reflect underlying lung pathology remains largely unproven. Modern portable ultrasound machines provide the veterinary practitioner with an inexpensive, non-invasive tool with which to examine the pleural surfaces and superficial lung parenchyma. Simultaneous recording of sounds overlying normal lung and defined pathology allows critical assessment of auscultated sounds in the same animal removing confounding fa
