Predicting Inflammatory Bowel Disease Flares Using Artificial Intelligence and Remote Monitoring: Toward Proactive Disease Management.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is characterized by a chronic relapsing-remitting course with unpredictable disease flares that significantly contribute to morbidity, impaired quality of life, and increased healthcare utilization. Despite advances in biologic therapies and treat-to-target strategies, disease management remains largely reactive, relying on clinical symptoms and biomarkers that often reflect established inflammation rather than anticipate disease exacerbation. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and remote monitorin

Measuring health-related quality of life in MSA: the MSA-QoL.

The objective of this study was to develop a new patient-reported outcome measure for patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA) and to test its psychometric properties. There were three stages. First, a pool of potential scale items was generated from in-depth patient interviews. Second, these items were administered, in the form of a questionnaire, to a sample of people with MSA and traditional psychometric methods used to develop a rating scale satisfying standard criteria for reliability and validity. Third, the psychometric properties of the rating scale were examined in a second sample.

Lip Granular Cell Tumor (GCT) in a Pediatric Patient: Critical Literature Review on Pediatric Intraoral GCT and Acquired and Congenital Intraoral Non-Neural GCT.

Therapeutic Monitoring (RTM) is a new program in the United States that began in 2022 allowing electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePRO) and other patient-generated data to be reviewed by clinical staff between visits so that patients can receive clinical attention as needed. Remote Therapeutic Monitoring simultaneously enhances the capacity to generate prospective longitudinal data that may be useful for secondary research purposes. As many governmental and private insurance programs in the United States now provide reimbursement for Remote Therapeutic Monitoring, increasing numbers of rheu

An open platform for personal health record apps with platform-level privacy protection.

One of the main barriers to the adoption of Personal Health Records (PHR) systems is their closed nature. It has been argued in the literature that this barrier can be overcome by introducing an open market of substitutable PHR apps. The requirements introduced by such an open market on the underlying platform have also been derived. In this paper, we argue that MyPHRMachines, a cloud-based PHR platform recently developed by the authors, satisfies these requirements better than its alternatives. The MyPHRMachines platform leverages Virtual Machines as flexible and secure execution sandboxes fo

Evaluating HIV Surveillance Completeness Along the Continuum of Care: Supplementing Surveillance With Health Center Data to Increase HIV Data to Care Efficiency.

BACKGROUND: HIV surveillance is essential to quantifying the impact of the epidemic and shaping HIV programs. The Maryland Department of Health (MDH) historically conducted HIV Data to Care (D2C) activities using surveillance data to identify individuals who were not in HIV care; however, most case investigations concluded that the individuals in question were currently engaged in care. This suggests that delays and gaps in laboratory reporting to HIV surveillance exist and the proportion of HIV-positive Marylanders who are truly in care is underestimated. Therefore, solely relying on surveill

Remote Follow-Up Technologies in Traumatic Brain Injury: A Scoping Review.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Motivations for outcome data collection in TBI are threefold: to improve patient outcomes, to facilitate research, and to provide the means and methods for wider injury surveillance. Such data play a pivotal role in population health, and ways to increase the reliability of data collection following TBI should be pursued. As a result, technology-aided follow-up of patients with neurotrauma is on the rise; there is, therefore, a need to describe how such technologies have been used. A scoping review was cond

Type 1 Diabetes Management and Health Care Experiences Across Rural Nebraska.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to explore the unique health care needs of rural Nebraska families with a child with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). METHOD: Using a phenomenological approach, the researchers conducted four focus groups across Nebraska. The focus groups gathered input from children, caregivers, and health care providers (n = 23). The researchers coded data and generated themes. Member checking, researcher triangulation, reflexivity, a thick description of the process, and an audit trail established trustworthiness. RESULTS: Four themes emerged: dramatic family and lifestyle c

Defining the key clinician skills and attributes for competency in managing patients with osteoporosis and fragility fractures.

Osteoporosis and fragility fractures are managed by clinicians across many medical specialties. The key competencies of clinicians delivering bone health care have not been systematically established. We aimed to develop a decision rule to define the threshold of adequate skills and attributes associated with clinical competency in bone health for a clinician serving as a referral source for bone health care. Using a modified-Delphi method, we invited clinicians with expertise in treating osteoporosis and representatives of patient advocacy groups focused on bone health to create a list of des

Addressing Disparities in Diabetes Management Through Novel Approaches to Encourage Technology Adoption and Use.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is one of the nation's leading drivers of disability and health care utilization, with elevated prevalence among individuals with lower education, income, and racial/ethnic minorities. Health information technology (HIT) holds vast potential for helping patients, providers, and payers to address T2D and the skyrocketing rates of chronic illness and associated health care costs. Patient portals to electronic health records (EHRs) serve as a gateway to consumer use of HIT. We found that disparities in portal use portend growing T2D disparities. Little progress has been made
