[Participation of platelets in the process of fibrosis in patients with mansonic schistosomiasis].

The aim of this study was to evaluate platelet activation through P-selectin, and PDGF-AB and TGF beta 1 content, in schistosomiasis patients who developed fibrosis (F3) and who did not present this (F0), and in a control group (C). The results showed that the percentage of P-selectin in platelets without agonist stimulation was 10.6% in F3, 11.1% in F0 and 6.3% in C. After the addition of ADP/adrenaline, the percentages were 44%, 25.3% and 42%, respectively. The PDGF-AB and TGF beta 1 contents per platelet were 11,016 ng/dl (F3), 3,172 ng/dl (F0) and 5.01 ng/dl (C) and 0,012 ng/dl (F3), 5.27

Assessing Participants' Experiences with Vitiligo from Patient Interviews.

INTRODUCTION: Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease, causing skin depigmentation. Individuals with vitiligo incur substantial psychosocial burden and have expressed frustration with their treatments. Here, we describe the burden of vitiligo and opinions on what constitutes meaningful change among participants of two qualitative interview studies. METHODS: Qualitative interviews were conducted with a subgroup of adolescent and adult participants with vitiligo from two pivotal phase 3 clinical trials of ruxolitinib cream (Study 1) and a real-world panel (Study 2). Participants were asked about thei

Patients' Participation in Health Research: A Classification of Cooperation Schemes.

BACKGROUND: The number of academic papers referring to patient engagement or to related terms has been rising sharply for at least 20 years; several review articles have recently been published enumerating a wide variety of situations of patient involvement in research and partnership with health professionals. OBJECTIVE: As no standardized keywords and no shared classifications exist to facilitate comparative studies of situations where patients and their organizations are recognized as coresearchers, this paper purports to create a typology to analyze those situations. METHODS: Based on 8

Patients with borderline personality disorder not participating in an RCT: are they different?

BACKGROUND: Despite the notion that randomized controlled trials are regarded as the gold standard in psychotherapy research, questions about their generalizability have been raised. This paper focuses on the differences between participants and eligible nonparticipants of a randomized controlled trial for patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). SAMPLING AND METHODS: One hundred forty-two patients were screened, and 122 were found eligible for study participation. Out of these, 64 patients (52.5%) gave informed consent and were included in the study. RESULTS: The 58 eligible non

Patient perspectives on clinical trial participation for novel advanced therapies: a focus group study in systemic lupus erythematosus.

To identify barriers and facilitators in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) regarding participation in clinical trials for novel/advanced agents, such as cellular therapies. Adults from our SLE research registry participated in 1-hour virtual focus groups concerning their perspectives on clinical trials for novel/advanced SLE therapies. Sessions, facilitated by trained moderators, were recorded and transcribed. An inductive thematic analysis approach was used to code the data and generate themes/sub-themes. Nineteen patients participated in four focus groups (two in English, two in French). Th

Participation in Electronic Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Collection as a Part of Routine Supportive Care Delivery in Oncology.

PURPOSE: The use of electronic patient-reported outcome measures (ePROMs) in supportive cancer care can lead to benefits, such as identifying at-risk patients in need of closer monitoring and treatment. Despite these benefits, most studies examining ePROMs in this area were for clinical trials rather than standard care. Since there is a need to identify which patients are more likely to participate in ePROMs, this study assessed ePROM participation rates and factors influencing greater participation among patients receiving supportive care. METHODS: This retrospective data analysis took place

Patient-Reported Factors Influencing Clinical Trial Participation: An In-depth Analysis of Patients With Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a chronic systemic autoimmune disease, has only three approved therapies, despite a rapidly expanding number of clinical trials. Trials in SLE struggle to recruit patients and fail to fully enroll. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), another chronic autoimmune disease, has had more success in clinical trial enrollment. This article's goal is to analyze literature to compare patient perspectives on factors determining clinical trial participation in SLE and RA populations. A literature review regarding patient attitudes, perceptions, perspectives about, and barriers t

A patient-focused, theory-guided approach to survey design identified barriers to and drivers of clinical trial participation.

OBJECTIVES: Despite clear evidence showing that many clinical trials fail or are delayed because of poor patient recruitment, there is surprisingly little empirically supported guidance for trialists seeking to optimize their trial recruitment strategies. We propose that the challenges of recruitment can be better understood and addressed by thinking of research participation as one or more behaviors, subject to the same forces as other human behaviors. In this article, we describe an adaptable, behavioral theory-driven approach for designing pretrial surveys of the barriers and drivers releva

Patient Participation in Moral Case Deliberation: Evaluating the Dynamics of Shared Reflection in a Mental Healthcare Setting in Türkiye.

Clinical ethics support services (CESS) have traditionally centered on healthcare professionals (HCPs), leaving the patient participation (PP) as a subject of controversy. This paper evaluates the practical and dialogical dynamics of a patient-participatory moral case deliberation (MCD). We analyze a MCD session conducted in a Turkish psychiatric hospital using the Dilemma Method. The group-comprising the facilitator, the case presenter (a senior psychiatrist), seven mental health professionals including a nurse and a clinical psychologist, and the patient herself-deliberated on a complex mora

A meta-review of patient engagement, shared decision-making, and factors influencing equity-deserving populations' participation in clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Many equity-deserving populations, including those facing structural health inequities, lack support to participate in clinical trials while facing barriers to participation. Two approaches—patient engagement (PE) and shared decision-making (SDM)—can help trialists better understand and address such barriers. PE can improve the relevance of trials to silenced communities while SDM can align participation decisions among socially disadvantaged groups with their values, needs, and preferences, which may help overcome health inequities. Further, Indigenous community engagement is vita

Research and recovery: Can patient participation in research promote recovery for people with complex post-traumatic stress disorder, CPTSD?

BACKGROUND: A new diagnosis of complex post-traumatic stress disorder, CPTSD, has been agreed by the World Health Organization, WHO, and evidence is needed for what psychological treatment might be effective, particularly from those with experience of the disorder. We used a novel participatory approach to explore patient views and simultaneously studied the impact on the patient researchers of the research process itself. In this paper, we report on the latter section of the study how the involvement in research of patients with CPTSD affected their mental health. Symptoms of CPTSD may includ

Social participation of diabetes and ex-leprosy patients in the Netherlands and patient preference for combined self-care groups.

INTRODUCTION: Earlier, we showed that neuropathic complications limit social participation of ex-leprosy patients, even in a non-endemic leprosy setting like the Netherlands. Self-care groups for ex-leprosy patients can strengthen self-worth of participants, prevent further handicap, and enable the exchange of coping strategies. For non-endemic leprosy settings with a very low rate of leprosy patients, a self-care group exclusively for (ex)leprosy patients is not likely to be feasible. A combined group with patients facing comparable morbidity would be more efficient than disease-specific self

Do participation and personalization matter? A model-driven evaluation of an Internet-based patient education intervention for fibromyalgia patients.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of an Internet-based patient education intervention, which was designed upon principles of personalization and participatory design. METHODS: Fifteen months after the first release of the website, 209 fibromyalgia patients recruited through health professionals completed an online questionnaire to assess patients' use of the website, health knowledge, self-management behavior, and health outcomes. These constructs were combined into an a-priory model that was tested using a structural equation modeling approach. RESULTS: Results show that the usage o
