Fixation-sensitive areas in the eyes of the walking fly, Calliphora erythrocephala.

In Calliphora erythrocephala the visual fixation behaviour in one-eyed flies and partial blinded flies has been investigated. One-eyed flies show approximately the same stripe and edge fixation response as intact flies. Elimination of the frontal eye parts including the binocular field of vision does not effect the visual stripe fixation. On the other hand, if only the frontal areas of both eyes including the binocular field of vision are left open, no preferential direction can be observed (Fig. 1--3). The results imply the existence of a fixation-sensitive area of the eye located outside the

Two visual systems in clinical neurology: readaptive role of the primitive system in visual agnosic patients.

In six patients with visual agnosia syndromes there was a striking dissociation between a preserved possibility of recognition of letters or objects in movement versus the recognition by simple visual static presentation. After a review of the literature it is concluded that at least two visual systems may be individualized in humans, i.e. a more recent one (the geniculo-calcarine) and an older one (the tectal-pulvinar-occipito-temporal system). Both from a physiological and clinical point of view, the most primitive system has two parts, i.e. a tectal and a telencephalic part. In visual agnos

Adaptor identity modulates adaptation effects in familiar face identification and their neural correlates.

Adaptation-related aftereffects (AEs) show how face perception can be altered by recent perceptual experiences. Along with contrastive behavioural biases, modulations of the early event-related potentials (ERPs) were typically reported on categorical levels. Nevertheless, the role of the adaptor stimulus per se for face identity-specific AEs is not completely understood and was therefore investigated in the present study. Participants were adapted to faces (S1s) varying systematically on a morphing continuum between pairs of famous identities (identities A and B), or to Fourier phase-randomize

PhysOnline: An Open Source Machine Learning Pipeline for Real-Time Analysis of Streaming Physiological Waveform.

Real-time analysis of streaming physiological data to identify earlier abnormal conditions is an important aspect of precision medicine. However, open-source systems supporting this workflow are lacking. In this paper, we present PhysOnline, a pipeline built on the open-source Apache Spark platform to ingest streaming physiological data for online feature extraction and machine learning. We consider scalability factors for horizontal deployment to support growing analysis requirements. We further integrate real-time feature extraction, including pattern recognition methods as well as descripti

Focal Hepatic PSMA Uptake Corresponding to a Steatosis-sparing Area: A Diagnostic Pitfall.

68 Ga-PSMA PET/CT is widely used for the evaluation of prostate cancer recurrence and metastasis. We present a case of increased PSMA uptake in segment 3 of the liver, corresponding to a region spared from diffuse hepatic steatosis. This uptake pattern may mimic focal hepatic metastasis. Recognition of steatosis sparing on CT or MRI is essential to avoid misinterpretation. This case highlights the importance of correlating functional and anatomic imaging to correctly identify physiological and benign variants in 68 Ga-PSMA PET/CT interpretation.

Flexible pressure and temperature dual-mode sensor based on buckling carbon nanofibers for respiration pattern recognition.

Breathing condition is an essential physiological indicator closely related to human health. Wearable flexible breath sensors for respiration pattern recognition have attracted much attention as they can provide physiological signal details for personal medical diagnosis, health monitoring, etc. However, present smart mask based on flexible breath sensors using single-mode detection can only detect a relatively small number of respiration patterns, especially lacking the ability to accurately distinguish mouth breath from nasal one. Herein, a smart face mask incorporated with a dual-sensing mo

Do you hear the same? Cardiorespiratory responses between mothers and infants during tonal and atonal music.

This study examined the effects of tonal and atonal music on respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) in 40 mothers and their 3-month-old infants. The tonal music fragment was composed using the structure of a harmonic series that corresponds with the pitch ratio characteristics of mother-infant vocal dialogues. The atonal fragment did not correspond with a tonal structure. Mother-infant ECG and respiration were registered along with simultaneous video recordings. RR-interval, respiration rate, and RSA were calculated. RSA was corrected for any confounding respiratory and motor activities. The resul

Identifying neural patterns of functional dyspepsia using multivariate pattern analysis: a resting-state FMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Previous imaging studies on functional dyspepsia (FD) have focused on abnormal brain functions during special tasks, while few studies concentrated on the resting-state abnormalities of FD patients, which might be potentially valuable to provide us with direct information about the neural basis of FD. The main purpose of the current study was thereby to characterize the distinct patterns of resting-state function between FD patients and healthy controls (HCs). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Thirty FD patients and thirty HCs were enrolled and experienced 5-mintue resting-state sca

Local and global motion after-effects are both enhanced in migraine, and the underlying mechanisms differ across cortical areas.

Visual after-effects are illusions that occur after prolonged viewing of visual displays (pattern adaptation). The motion after-effect (MAE), for example, is an illusory impression of motion that is seen after viewing moving displays. After-effects have been used extensively in basic vision research as well as in clinical settings, and have been reported to be enhanced in migraine. Pattern adaptation is a cortical phenomenon that reflects both cellular mechanisms acting within individual neurons and specific interactions between groups of neurons activated by the adapting display. A remarkable

Auditory pattern recognition and brief tone discrimination of children with reading disorders.

UNLABELLED: Auditory pattern recognition skills in children with reading disorders were investigated using perceptual tests involving discrimination of frequency and duration tonal patterns. A behavioral test battery involving recognition of the pattern of presentation of tone triads was used in which individual components differed in either frequency or duration. A test involving measurement of difference limens for long and short duration tones was also administered. In comparison to controls, children with reading disorders exhibited significantly higher error rates in discrimination of dur

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 olfactory impairment shows a pattern similar to other major neurodegenerative diseases.

Olfactory function is affected in different neurodegenerative diseases. Recently, it has been found that some hereditary ataxias are also associated with significant olfactory impairment. However, the initial findings did not examine the nature of the olfactory impairment associated with these ataxias. In the present article the effect of spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) on olfactory function was studied in 53 SCA2 patients and 53 healthy control subjects from Holguín, Cuba. Several tests were applied to evaluate olfactory threshold, description, identification and discrimination. The resu

Effects of tonal language background on tests of temporal sequencing in children.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of the present study were to determine the effects of language background on the performance of the pitch pattern sequence test (PPST) and duration pattern sequence test (DPST). As temporal order sequencing may be affected by age and working memory, these factors were also studied. DESIGN: Performance of tonal and non-tonal language speakers on PPST and DPST were compared. STUDY SAMPLE: Twenty-eight native Mandarin (tonal language) speakers and twenty-nine native Malay (non-tonal language) speakers between seven to nine years old participated in this study. RESULTS: The

An Unsorted Spike-Based Pattern Recognition Method for Real-Time Continuous Sensory Event Detection from Dorsal Root Ganglion Recording.

In functional neuromuscular stimulation systems, sensory information-based closed-loop control can be useful for restoring lost function in patients with hemiplegia or quadriplegia. The goal of this study was to detect sensory events from tactile afferent signals continuously in real time using a novel unsorted spike-based pattern recognition method. The tactile afferent signals were recorded with a 16-channel microelectrode in the dorsal root ganglion, and unsorted spike-based feature vectors were extracted as a novel combination of the time and time-frequency domain features. Short- and long-term rhythmic interventions: perspectives for language rehabilitation.

This paper brings together different perspectives on the investigation and understanding of temporal processing and temporal expectations. We aim to bridge different temporal deficit hypotheses in dyslexia, dysphasia, or deafness in a larger framework, taking into account multiple nested temporal scales. We present data testing the hypothesis that temporal attention can be influenced by external rhythmic auditory stimulation (i.e., musical rhythm) and benefits subsequent language processing, including syntax processing and speech production. We also present data testing the hypothesis that pho

Impaired Statistical Learning in Developmental Dyslexia.

PURPOSE: Developmental dyslexia (DD) is commonly thought to arise from phonological impairments. However, an emerging perspective is that a more general procedural learning deficit, not specific to phonological processing, may underlie DD. The current study examined if individuals with DD are capable of extracting statistical regularities across sequences of passively experienced speech and nonspeech sounds. Such statistical learning is believed to be domain-general, to draw upon procedural learning systems, and to relate to language outcomes. METHOD: DD and control groups were familiarized w

Study on reconstruction of rectal sensation based on wavelet packet analysis and SVM strategy.

To control anal incontinence, we have developed an artificial anal sphincter system with sensor feedback. The artificial anal sphincter system is a novel hydraulic-electric muscle which mainly comprises an artificial anal sphincter, a wireless power supply subsystem, and a rectal sensation reconstruction subsystem. To investigate the features of the patients' rectal sensation, we have developed an in vitro experimental platform of artificial anal sphincter. In vitro experiments have been performed, and demonstrate that the traditional threshold method is not suitable for predicting the time fo

The representation of subordinate shape similarity in human occipitotemporal cortex.

We investigated the coding of subordinate shape similarity in human object-selective cortex in two event-related functional magnetic resonance adaptation (fMR-A) experiments. Previous studies using faces have concluded that there is a narrow tuning of neuronal populations selective to each face, and that tuning is relative to the expected "average" face (norm-based encoding). Here we investigated these issues using outlines of animals and tools occupying a particular position on different morphing sequences per category. In a first experiment, we inferred the width of neural tuning to exemplar

Whistle sequences in wild killer whales (Orcinus orca).

Combining different stereotyped vocal signals into specific sequences increases the range of information that can be transferred between individuals. The temporal emission pattern and the behavioral context of vocal sequences have been described in detail for a variety of birds and mammals. Yet, in cetaceans, the study of vocal sequences is just in its infancy. Here, we provide a detailed analysis of sequences of stereotyped whistles in killer whales off Vancouver Island, British Columbia. A total of 1140 whistle transitions in 192 whistle sequences recorded from resident killer whales were an

CLMER: A Framework for Contrastive Learning-Based Multimodal Emotion Recognition.

Emotion recognition plays a crucial role in human-computer interaction and affective computing, yet its effectiveness is limited by the difficulty of integrating heterogeneous modalities with fundamentally different structures, such as physiological signals and visual data. In this article, we propose CLMER, a contrastive learning-based multimodal cross-attention framework designed to address the challenges of complex emotion recognition. The framework introduces a serialization strategy that converts pixel-level image data into time-series data, aligning it with the temporal characteristics o

Biased Neural Representation of Feature-Based Attention in the Human Frontoparietal Network.

Selective attention is a core cognitive function for efficient processing of information. Although it is well known that attention can modulate neural responses in many brain areas, the computational principles underlying attentional modulation remain unclear. Contrary to the prevailing view of a high-dimensional, distributed neural representation, here we show a surprisingly simple, biased neural representation for feature-based attention in a large dataset including five human fMRI studies. We found that when human participants (both sexes) selected one feature from a compound stimulus, voxe
