Vigabatrin as initial therapy for infantile spasms: a European retrospective survey. Sabril IS Investigator and Peer Review Groups.

PURPOSE: The efficacy and tolerability of vigabatrin (VGB) as an add-on therapy in the treatment of infantile spasm (IS) prompted physicians to explore its use as the first drug in this seizure type. METHODS: Our retrospective study included 250 infants diagnosed with IS; the data obtained were subjected to peer-group review. Of this infant population, 192 infants were considered to have classic IS and had received VGB as their first treatment for the spasms. There was a slight preponderance of boys (57%) in this population. Mean age of IS onset was 5.8 months; 60% had typical hypsarrhythmia.

Adolescent stress reactivity: Examining physiological, psychological and peer relationship measures with a group stress protocol in a school setting.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents experience enhanced social sensitivity and biopsychosocial changes that can be challenging. Much remains unknown about the effect of psychological characteristics and peer relationships on adolescents' physiological responses to stress, due in part to methodological limitations. METHODS: To test how adolescents' peer relationships and psychological characteristics are associated with their physiological and psychological response to stress, we administered the Group Public Speaking Task for Adolescents (GPST-A) to 54 adolescents (n = 40 girls; Mage = 16.6 years) in t

Small Group Instruction Can Improve Adolescent Mental Health and Peer Relations: Findings From A Technology-Assisted Cooperative Learning Intervention.

Internalizing symptoms in adolescents (e.g., anxiety, loneliness, depression) increased following the COVID-19 pandemic, and can have detrimental impacts on engagement, learning, and overall school success. Cooperative Learning (CL), a small-group instructional approach that creates intergroup collaboration among students, has an extensive track record of improving peer relations and school belonging, which may reduce social stress and protect against internalizing symptoms. However, adhering to the key design principles that make CL successful can be difficult for teachers to do in their ever

Social cohesion and peer acceptance predict student-athletes' attitudes toward health-risk behaviors: A within- and between-group investigation.

OBJECTIVES: Collegiate student-athletes often engage in health-risk behaviors such as alcohol misuse and hazing, but the literature in this domain lacks evidence pertaining to how peers shape attitudes towards such behaviors. We investigated how peer acceptance and social cohesion relate to attitudes towards alcohol use, marijuana use, drinking and driving, playing through a concussion, performance enhancing substance use, and hazing. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. METHODS: Participants were 387 NCAA athletes from 23 intact teams. Multilevel modeling was used to examine the extent that heal

Digital peer-to-peer support programme for informal caregivers of people living with motor neuron disease: study protocol for a multi-centre parallel group, single-blinded (outcome assessor) randomised controlled superiority trial.

BACKGROUND: Peer support is effective in improving psychological well-being of family caregivers of people with conditions such as dementia, cancer, and brain injury. However, there are limited data on effective psychological interventions for family caregivers of people living with motor neurone disease. Our objective is to evaluate the efficacy of a virtual peer support programme for improving caregiver psychological wellbeing and caregiving related outcomes. METHODS: We will conduct a multi-centre parallel group randomised controlled superiority trial. Using a multi-modal recruitment strat

Peer-led recovery groups for people with psychosis in South Africa (PRIZE): protocol for a randomised controlled feasibility trial.

BACKGROUND: The available care for people with psychosis in South Africa is inadequate to support personal recovery. Group peer support interventions are a promising approach to foster recovery, but little is known about the preferences of service users, or the practical application of this care model, in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). This study aims to assess the acceptability and feasibility of integrating peer-led recovery groups for people with psychosis and their caregivers in South Africa into existing systems of care, and to determine key parameters in preparation for a defin

Reliability of the American Community Survey Estimates of Risk-Adjusted Readmission Rankings for Hospitals Before and After Peer Group Stratification.

IMPORTANCE: Since the transition to the American Community Survey, data uncertainty has complicated its use for policy making and research, despite the ongoing need to identify disparities in health care outcomes. The US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' new, stratified payment adjustment method for its Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program may be able to reduce the reliance on data linkages to socioeconomic survey estimates. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there are differences in the reliability of socioeconomically risk-adjusted hospital readmission rates among hospitals that ser

Get Involved Reach Top Health (GIRTH): A community-based, peer-led group lifestyle modification program for men - A quasi-randomised trial.

Men are underrepresented in community-based lifestyle modification programs (LMP). A quasi-randomised trial was undertaken to assess the efficacy of GIRTH, a peer-led, group-based LMP for men, in reducing cardiometabolic risk factors. One-hundred-seventy-eight men (mean age 58 yrs, waist circumference 110 cm) in 11 groups, were allocated 1:3 to either a control group receiving healthy lifestyle information only (n = 45) or a GIRTH group involving 12, weekly, face-to-face sessions focused on health literacy, goal setting, problem solving and self-monitoring (n = 133). Study design and interventions for a peer-delivered motivational interviewing group treatment for sexual and gender minority male sexual trauma survivors.

Sexual abuse of boys and men is a public health problem that has received relatively little attention from clinical scholars and researchers. Given unique pathways for development of and recovery from trauma-related emotional distress, sexual abuse survivors who identify as men may require distinct psychosocial interventions to engage in formal mental health care and assist in symptom reduction. This paper describes the rationale for and methodology of a randomized controlled trial comparing the effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing (MI) versus MI with affirmative care (MI-AC) for sexual

A peer support group intervention to decrease epilepsy-related stigma in an onchocerciasis-endemic area in Mahenge, Tanzania: A pilot study.

A high burden of epilepsy has been reported in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) particularly in onchocerciasis endemic areas. To improve the quality of life of persons with epilepsy (PWE) in Mahenge, an onchocerciasis-endemic area in Tanzania, we established peer support groups (PSG) in two out of four rural villages (Mdindo, Msogezi, Mzelezi and Sali). One year later (between February and July 2020), we carried out a cross-sectional survey among PWE and their caregivers in the four rural villages with the aim of comparing perceived stigma among PWE in study sites with and without PSG. Perceived stigm

Understanding the role of peer group membership in reducing HIV-related risk and vulnerability among female sex workers in Karnataka, India.

In Karnataka state, South India, we analyzed the role of membership in peer groups in reducing HIV-related risk and vulnerability among female sex workers (FSWs). Data from three surveys conducted in Karnataka, a behavioral tracking survey and two rounds of integrated biological and behavioral assessments (IBBAs), were analyzed. Using propensity score matching, we examined the impact of group membership on selected outcomes, including condom use, experience of violence, access to entitlements, and the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV infection. 'Online boundary-work': How people with diabetes negotiate what counts as legitimate knowledge in Facebook peer support groups.

People with chronic conditions such as diabetes use social media to interact with peers. While these online interactions allow them to exchange advice and gain insight into how others cope with their condition, concerns about 'misinformation' being shared are persistently raised, especially among medical professionals. Rather than assessing whether information shared on social media is 'correct' from a clinical perspective, we explore how people with diabetes negotiate what counts as legitimate knowledge as they interact in Facebook groups. Empirically, we draw on a six-month observation of in

Decoding Preschool Social Dynamics: Automated Tracking of Spatial and Temporal Patterns to Investigate Social Interactions and Relationships in Peer Groups.

In this study, we applied machine learning tools to automatically track the positions of preschool children in a natural free play setting and derived spatial and temporal features from these data to identify social interactions between them. We observed a sample of 20 preschool children (10 female, 10 male; M ± SD = 3.95 ± 0.82 years) in groups of three children each. Friendship among children was assessed, and friend dyads were paired either with a mutual friend (n = 12 groups) or with a mutually disliked peer (n = 11 groups). We used a ceiling-mounted camera to record 10-min free play sessi

Online Hearing Voices Peer Support Groups: Assessing Feasibility and Acceptability Within UK National Health Service Settings.

BACKGROUND: User-led hearing voices groups (HVGs) have existed for the past 40 years, but little research has been conducted into if and how this approach can be implemented in statutory mental health settings, and whether they can be delivered effectively when held online. The aim of this study was to conduct a feasibility and acceptability trial of an online HVG for the UK National Health Service (NHS) users who hear voices, to inform a future larger-scale trial. METHODS: A mixed-methods, nonrandomized feasibility study of an online HVG was conducted with 9 participants. Participants attend
