Prospective peer review in fine needle aspiration cytology. Another step toward quality assurance.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of a prospective peer review program on diagnostic accuracy in a routine cytopathology laboratory. STUDY DESIGN: For the study, 4,836 consecutive cases subjected to fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) over a one-year period were used. Nine pathologists performed both reporting and peer review functions. Disagreements were classified into "diagnostic errors" and "diagnostic discrepancies," depending on their impact on patient care. The effect of this review on turnaround time was statistically analyzed. A retrospective review of 4,025 cases from the precedi

Dog Bites in the United States from 1971 to 2018: A Systematic Review of the Peer-Reviewed Literature.

BACKGROUND: Surgical specialists in plastic, head and neck, hand, trauma surgery, and emergency medicine physicians bear the burden of treating the most serious injuries caused by animals. Most of these incidents result from an attack by a known dog, and breed has been proposed, but not proven, to be a controllable factor. The authors summarize the peer-reviewed literature on dog bites in the United States, specifically as related to the breeds implicated. METHODS: A systematic review of all peer-reviewed publications reporting on dog bites in the United States was performed. MEDLINE, Embase,

Rat as an animal model for Peyronie's disease research: a review of current methods and the peer-reviewed literature.

While the exact mechanism of Peyronie's disease (PD) remains an enigma, the pathophysiology of PD is considered to be multifactorial, with interactions of genetic predisposition, trauma, tissue inflammation and aberrant wound healing. A non-systematic review of the existing English language literature pertaining to the use of rodent models in the evaluation of PD was performed using the Medline database. Multiple free-text searches were performed on key words: animal models of PD, transforming growth factor β1 (TGF β1), tunical and/or corporal fibrosis, subtunical injection and penile myofibro

Protective and Promotive Factors for Healthy Peer Relationships Among Adolescents: A Systematic Review.

Poor peer relationships have been identified as a primary risk factor for intimate partner violence (IPV). As part of the PROTECT-IPV Project, this systematic review was conducted to understand the protective factors against poor peer relationships in adolescence. A total of 1,365 articles published between 2004 and 2024 were identified from a search in 10 databases. Studies were included if they were empirical, discussed a promotive factor related to peer relationships among adolescents, and were published in English. The final synthesis included 38 studies. Peer relationships were assessed v

[Implementation of delirium management in inpatient care: results from IQM peer reviews].

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a frequent neuropsychiatric disorder, particularly in older hospitalized and critically ill patients, which is associated with negative consequences such as increased mortality and morbidity. Due to the ageing population, an increase in delirium cases is to be expected, further increasing the need for standardized inpatient delirium care; however, the implementation of structured delirium management in an inpatient setting has not been sufficiently examined. METHOD: As part of the Delirium Awareness Campaign launched by the Initiative on Quality in Medicine (Initiative

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and Disorders: An Overview of Peer-Reviewed Publications 2018-2022.

Context Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) has been claimed to be effective in various human disorders and conditions. There have been many anecdotal claims to lend credence to the efficacy of this treatment modality. Recently, much work has been done in evidence-based, government-funded projects, and clinical trials in OMM research, and these studies have further demonstrated the efficacy of OMM as direct, integrated, or complementary mechanisms in treating various conditions. Objectives As the field of OMM research has grown significantly in the past few years, we set out to analyze the

Effectiveness of Peer-Support Interventions for Smoking Cessation: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Peer support has been recommended to promote smoking cessation, but results from prior meta-analyses have not established its efficacy. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess current evidence and identify potential modifiers of efficacy. METHODS: Randomized controlled trials of peer-support interventions with a smoking cessation outcome were identified in January 2022 from PubMed and references listed in identified studies. The meta-analysis outcome measure was mean risk ratio (RR, 95% confidence interval [CI]) for abstinence at the longest follow-up timepo

Peer Support in the Treatment of Chronic Pain in Adolescents: A Review of the Literature and Available Resources.

Peer support has found applications beyond the mental health field and is useful for managing several chronic disorders and supporting healthy lifestyle choices. Communication through telephone and the Internet allows for greater access to those who cannot meet in person. Adolescent chronic pain would seem ideally suited to benefit from online peer support groups. Research is lacking, however, to characterize benefit in terms of pain and function, despite a clear desire among adolescents for access to such programs. More rapid development of online applications is needed for peer support, and

A Scoping Review of the Peer-Reviewed Research on Alternative First Response for Mental and Behavioral Health Crisis and Homelessness.

OBJECTIVE: Alternative first response programs (i.e., non-law enforcement teams dispatched to calls involving mental or behavioral health crisis) have expanded rapidly, but implementation has outpaced development of an empirical evidence base. This scoping review assessed the current state of peer-reviewed research on these programs, including how they are defined and studied, and where gaps remain. METHODS: Guided by PRISMA-ScR, a scoping review of peer-reviewed studies was conducted. Eligible studies described non-law enforcement teams dispatched to calls for service involving mental or beh

School-based peer education interventions to improve health: a global systematic review of effectiveness.

INTRODUCTION: Peer education, whereby peers ('peer educators') teach their other peers ('peer learners') about aspects of health is an approach growing in popularity across school contexts, possibly due to adolescents preferring to seek help for health-related concerns from their peers rather than adults or professionals. Peer education interventions cover a wide range of health areas but their overall effectiveness remains unclear. This review aims to summarise the effectiveness of existing peer-led health interventions implemented in schools worldwide. METHODS: Five electronic databases wer

Peering into the twilight: a systematic review on visual-based investigation of worldwide mesophotic ecosystems.

Mesophotic ecosystems host high biodiversity and support a vast variety of habitats. Owing to climate change, there is a growing interest in the study of mesophotic assemblages as a possible pocket of biodiversity for species. However, due to logistic constraints, these habitats have been historically less investigated and mostly neglected in conservation planning. Thus, it is difficult to gain a global overview of the state of the art, especially with regards to sampling methodology. Here, we conducted a systematic literature review, extracting data from 1001 publications on mesophotic resear
