OBJECTIVE: To estimate differences in pelvic floor disorders by mode of delivery.
METHODS: We recruited 1,011 women for a longitudinal cohort study 5-10 years after first delivery. Using hospital records, we classified each birth as: cesarean without labor, cesarean during active labor, cesarean after complete cervical dilation, spontaneous vaginal birth, or operative vaginal birth. At enrollment, stress incontinence, overactive bladder, anal incontinence, and prolapse symptoms were assessed with a validated questionnaire. Pelvic organ support was assessed using the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quan

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of pelvic organ prolapse in urban and rural women and to identify possible related factors. They were 1749 participants; one thousand four hundred seventeen (81%) urban women and 332 rural residents (19%). The urban and rural women were congruently regarding to age, parity, using oral contraceptives and postmenopausal status. The urban women were more often obese (p < 0.01), estrogen replacement users (p < 0.001), smokers (p < 0.001), with mild (p < 0.001) and high (p < 0.001) education, and they were often divorced (p < 0.05) than rural

PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic capabilities of MRI in the study of functional diseases of the female pelvic floor.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten healthy volunteers and 30 patients with clinically suspected pelvic floor deficiency, with or without pelvic organ prolapse, were evaluated by a high field strength magnet operating at 1.5 T. In each case SSFSE sequences (TR/TE:25720/67) in axial, coronal and sagittal planes, both at rest and during Valsalva's manoeuvre, were performed. Based on the MRI findings using fixed and mobile anatomical landmarks, the functional disease of the pelvic floor

Early diagnosed functional disorders of the ano-rectum or pelvic floor can be treated in the office by conservative treatment or out-patient surgery. The normal anatomy of the anal canal must be restituted by reducing enlarged haemorrhoids, removing a prolapse of the anterior rectal wall with rubber-band ligation, excision of chronic fissures and prolapsing tumours. The basic therapy then consists of normalisation of bowel habits and stool consistency. An anal stenosis must be dilated. Training of the sphincter, gymnastics of the pelvic floor, electrostimulation and biofeedback are the therapy

Sixty-nine patients with enterocele on defaecography, and 128 patients without enterocele but with other abnormal findings were investigated to identify concomitant colorectal disorders and their relationship with enterocele. Of the 69 patients with enterocele, 38 (55%) had concomitant rectal intususception and 26 (38%) rectal prolapse. Abnormal physiological findings on anorectal manometry and electrophysiology were more common in patients with enterocele. Previous hysterectomy increased the risk of enterocele formation. The study has demonstrated that patients with enterocele should be inves

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Obstructed defecation syndrome (ODS) is a multifactorial condition that significantly impairs quality of life and presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to the interaction of functional and anatomical factors. This initiative aimed to develop a Belgian consensus and a diagnostic-therapeutic algorithm to support effective clinical management of ODS.
METHODS: A Belgian steering group of gastroenterologists and colorectal surgeons (n=6) conducted a Delphi consensus process. Based on a structured literature review, 82 statements were drafted and discussed during t

OBJECTIVE: To determine if sociodemographic and health determinants of women with pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) affect health-seeking behavior, and whether this varies by disease subtype and severity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of women with PFDs at an academic urogynecology practice between January 2021 and May 2022. Groups were compared across sociodemographic and clinical variables and by pelvic organ prolapse (POP) stage and urinary incontinence (UI) subtype/severity. The primary outcomes of interest were POP stage and UI severity at initial presentat

INTRODUCTION: Sexual dysfunction in women is usually associated with the menopausal transition and menopause; however, there are factors that can also influence the sexual function of women in menopause. The aim of this study is to determine the association between pelvic floor disorders and sexual dysfunction in women in menopause.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out in Spain with menopausal women recruited by convenience sampling. Data were collected on background and health status. To evaluate the presence of pelvic floor problems, the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory (PFDI-20)

The pelvic floor (PF) is made of muscles, ligaments, and fascia, which ensure organ statics, maintain muscle tone, and are involved in contractions. This review describes the myofascial relationships of PF with other parts of the body that determine the proper functions of PF, and also provides insight into PF disorders and the factors contributing to them. PF plays an important role in continence, pelvic support, micturition, defecation, sexual function, childbirth, and locomotion, as well as in stabilizing body posture and breathing, and cooperates with the diaphragm and postural muscles. INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) negatively affect quality of life in the general population, and their prevalence in gynecologic cancer survivors has not been systematically described. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of PFDs in cancer survivors. We hypothesized that the prevalence of PFDs in the gynecologic cancer population would be higher than in the general female population.
METHODS: We searched PubMed (1809 to present), EMBASE (1974 to present), and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) through May 2017. The search combined s

Pelvic Floor Disorders (PFD) are a major public health problem in the world and decrease seriously the patient's quality of life. In case of recurrence after surgery or complex prolapse, imaging techniques can be used. Dynamic MRI, introduced in the early 1990s, offers information of the four compartments of the pelvis with a high resolution and a direct visualization of muscles and fascias in multiple planes. But for a practical use, such an expensive exam should be well correlated to symptoms and clinical examination or change surgical approach. The aim of our review was to precise the evide

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The article reviews the current evidence and the role of elective Cesarean section in the prevention of pelvic floor disorders (PFDs).
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have revealed that operative vaginal delivery is an important risk factor for PFDs. The cause of PFD is multifactorial. Pregnancy itself also increases the PFDs. Elective Cesarean section carries diminished risk for stress urinary incontinence. Pelvic floor muscle training should be offered to all women in their first pregnancy as a preventive strategy.
SUMMARY: The health provider should not offer elective C

Since its introduction in the late 1970s for the treatment of strabismus and blepharospasm, botulinum toxin (BoNT) has been increasingly used in the interventional treatment of several other disorders characterized by excessive or inappropriate muscle contractions. The use of this pluripotential agent has extended to a plethora of conditions including: focal dystonia; spasticity; inappropriate contraction in most sphincters of the body such as those associated with spasmodic dysphonia, esophageal achalasia, chronic anal fissure, and vaginismus; eye movement disorders; other hyperkinetic disord

Pelvic floor disorders are highly prevalent among reproductive-age women in sub-Saharan Africa and commonly lead to urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, bowel dysfunction, sexual problems, and reduced quality of life. Pelvic floor muscle exercise, defined as repeated contraction and relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles, is an effective preventive and non-surgical treatment of pelvic floor disorders. However, despite the high burden of pelvic floor disorders in Ethiopia, the significance and role of pelvic floor muscle exercise have not yet been studied in a study setting. This study

The number of patients who suffer from pelvic floor disorders increases with age and can have a significant impact on quality of life. The first-line treatment for these different disorders includes pelvic floor rehabilitation. However, there are high rates of non-compliance with completing the recommended duration of treatment due to delays in appointments and time constraints. Thus, the primary goal of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of an online eight-week video-based pelvic floor muscle therapy program. A secondary goal is determining whether the treatment can i

Sexual violence against women remains a major public health issue, with nearly 15% of women in France reporting having experienced sexual violence during their lifetime. These traumatic experiences can have significant repercussions on both physical and psychological health. Chronic pelvic pain, genito-pelvic pain, and penetration disorders are frequently associated with a history of sexual violence. Their management often requires a multidisciplinary approach, in which pelvic floor physical therapy plays an important role. Some rehabilitation techniques involve intravaginal interventions, rai
