Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) receptors were solubilized from porcine liver membranes using CHAPS. The binding of 125I-VIP to solubilized receptors was reversible, saturable and specific. Scatchard analysis indicated the presence of one binding site with a Kd of 6.5 +/- 0.3 nM and a Bmax of 1.20 +/- 0.15 pmol/mg protein. The effect of cigarette smoke and nicotine on duodenal mucosal bicarbonate secretion (DMBS) was studied in rats. Solitary mastocytoma (mast cell naevus) of the skin represents a relatively rare dermal tumour. Its occurrence on the lower eyelid is exceptional. We report the case of a 4 month old male infant who exhibited a firm, yellowish nodule (1 cm in maximum diameter) on the lower lid of the right eye from birth. The effect of carbohydrate on the conformation and chain dimensions of mucous glycoproteins was investigated by using light-scattering and circular dichroism studies of native, asialo, and deglycosylated (apo) ovine submaxillary gland mucin (OSM).
