Acetaminophen degradation by a synergistic peracetic acid/UVC-LED/Fe(II) advanced oxidation process: Kinetic assessment, process feasibility and mechanistic considerations.

Application of peracetic acid (PAA) in Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) has seen an increase in the last few years. In this study, PAA/UVC-LED/transition metal was used to degrade acetaminophen (ACT) in an aqueous solution. Amongst tested transition metals (Fe, Cu, Co, Mn, Ag), Fe(II) demonstrated the highest efficiency. The effect of pH, PAA dosage, initial concentration of ACT and Fe(II) concentration was investigated on ACT removal. More than 95% removal efficiency was obtained in 30 min employing pH = 5.0, PAA 4 mM and 0.5 mM Fe(II) (kapp = 0.0993 min-1). Scavenging experiments highligh

Efficient activation of peracetic acid by Fe-doped g-C3N4 for selective degradation of emerging contaminants: Unraveling the role of reactive complex.

Peracetic acid (PAA)-driven advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are increasing favored for water treatment due to their environmentally benignity and ease of activation. However, the development of low-cost and high-performance activators is still a primary challenge. In this study, Fe-doped g-C3N4 (Fe-N-C) was fabricated as an efficient peracetic acid (PAA) activator for sustainable degradation of emerging contaminants (ECs) like bisphenol A (BPA) with a removal efficiency of 97.8 %. Quite different from the reported non-radical involved catalytic studies, Fe-N-C-PAA complex (Fe(III)-OO(O)CCH

Disinfection of wastewater by hydrogen peroxide or peracetic acid: development of procedures for measurement of residual disinfectant and application to a physicochemically treated municipal effluent.

The Montreal Urban Community Wastewater Treatment Plant (MUCWTP) located in Montreal. Quebec, Canada, uses physicochemical treatment processes prior to discharging wastewater into the St. Lawrence River via an outfall tunnel of 2 hours retention time. Although chlorination facilities exist, they are not being used, and the MUCWTP is seeking alternative methods for disinfection to achieve a 2- to 3-log fecal coliform reduction. Liquid chemical disinfectants were attractive options because of their low capital costs. This led to an investigation of the feasibility of using hydrogen peroxide or p

Enhanced Oxidation of Carbamazepine Using Mn(II)-Activated Peracetic Acid: A Novel Advanced Oxidation Process Involving the Significant Role of Ligand Effects.

In recent years, extensive attention has been paid to advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) with peracetic acid (PAA), a widely used disinfectant, using transition metal ions for the degradation of organic contaminants within water environments. Mn(II) has been widely used as an effective homogeneous transition metal catalyst for oxidant activation, but it has shown poor performances with PAA. Since the stability of manganese species can be enhanced through the addition of ligands, this study systematically investigated a novel AOP for the oxidation of carbamazepine (CBZ) using an Mn(II)/PAA sys

Vitamin C promoted refractory organic contaminant elimination in the zero-valent iron/peracetic acid system: Efficiency, mechanism and effects of various parameters.

The conventional zero-valent iron/peracetic acid (ZVI/PAA) system is severely limited owing to the passivation of ZVI and the low recovery of Fe2+. In this study, a reducing agent, vitamin C (H2A), was used for the first time to enhance the ZVI/PAA system as a way to improve its degradation performance. Under optimal conditions, the removal efficiency of the H2A/ZVI/PAA system was 82.9%, while that of the H2A/PAA and ZVI/PAA systems were only 19.0% and 25.6%. Free radical quenching and electron paramagnetic experiments (EPR) confirmed that CH3C(O)O•, •OH and CH3C(O)OO• were the major active sp

Novel Nonradical Oxidation of Sulfonamide Antibiotics with Co(II)-Doped g-C3N4-Activated Peracetic Acid: Role of High-Valent Cobalt-Oxo Species.

Herein, we report that Co(II)-doped g-C3N4 can efficiently trigger peracetic acid (PAA) oxidation of various sulfonamides (SAs) in a wide pH range. Quite different from the traditional radical-generating or typical nonradical-involved (i.e., singlet oxygenation and mediated electron transfer) catalytic systems, the PAA activation follows a novel nonradical pathway with unprecedented high-valent cobalt-oxo species [Co(IV)] as the dominant reactive species. Our experiments and density functional theory calculations indicate that the Co atom fixated into the nitrogen pots of g-C3N4 serves as the

Infectivity reduction efficacy of UV irradiation and peracetic acid-UV combined treatment on MS2 bacteriophage and murine norovirus in secondary wastewater effluent.

Peracetic acid (PAA) is a strong oxidant/bactericide that has been applied in various industries (e.g., food processing, pharmaceuticals, medical device sterilization, etc.) as a disinfectant. There is increasing interest in using PAA for wastewater disinfection because it does not form halogenated byproducts, and no post-treatment quenching is required. Previous studies have demonstrated good efficiency in controlling bacteria in wastewater, but limited information is available for viruses, especially those hosted by mammals (e.g., norovirus). Therefore, a study on the infectivity reduction o

Co-infection of Liburna oophaga sp. nov. and Ikanecator primus on cuttlefish (Sepia pharaonis) eggs and the effectiveness of peracetic acid as a treatment.

The cuttlefish Sepia pharaonis species complex is emerging as a promising set of organisms for research in neuroscience, the behavioral sciences, and commercial aquaculture. At the same time, information about pathogens and diseases that could affect cuttlefish cultivation in intensive aquaculture settings remains limited. Our study has identified two species of parasite, the protozoan Liburna oophaga sp. nov. and the metazoan Ikanecator primus, that co-infect cuttlefish eggs, increasing mortality and reducing hatching rates. L. oophaga sp. nov. is reported here for the first time to enhance m

Breaking kinetic limitations in Fenton-like processes: Freezing- enhanced activation of peracetic acid by ultra-low Mn(II) dosage for micropollutants degradation.

Peracetic acid (PAA)-based Fenton-like systems have attracted considerable attention as promising advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for water purification. However, the homogeneous activation of PAA by Mn(II), a widely employed transition metal, remains intrinsically inefficient under conventional conditions. In this study, we propose a novel cryogenic strategy that enables highly efficient activation of PAA by Mn(II) even at ultralow dosages. Notably, at neutral pH, the frozen PAA/Mn(II) system exhibited a 146.4-fold enhancement in the pseudo-first-order rate constant for sulfamethoxazole (

Mechanism of self-driven naphthol blue black degradation in Fe(III)-activated peracetic acid system: Dominant role of high-valent iron species.

The iron-activated peracetic acid (PAA) system is a novel green advanced oxidation process (AOP), but conventional Fe(III)-activated PAA systems suffer from low efficiency and require co-activator for iron cycling. This study demonstrated efficient degradation of the organic pollutant Naphthol Blue Black (NBB) in a Fe(III)/PAA system without additional co-activator, achieving 95.7 % removal within 7 min, slightly higher than that observed with Fe(II). The degradation efficiency of NBB increased with appropriate elevation of initial concentrations of Fe(III), NBB, and PAA, but was inhibited und

Encapsulated peracetic acid as a valid broad-spectrum antimicrobial alternative, leading to beneficial microbiota compositional changes and enhanced performance in broiler chickens.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial alternatives are urgently needed, including for poultry production systems. In this study, we tested the potential broad-range antimicrobial alternative peracetic acid, delivered in feed via the hydrolysis of encapsulated precursors through a 28-day study using 375 Ross 308 broiler chickens. We tested two peracetic acid concentrations, 30 and 80 mg/kg on birds housed on re-used litter, and we evaluated the impact of both levels on gut microbial communities, bacterial concentration, antimicrobial resistance genes relative abundance and growth performance when compared

Mechanistic insights into norfloxacin removal in a novel riboflavin-mediated nanoscale zero-valent iron/peracetic acid system: Synergistic radical and non-radical pathways.

In this study, a novel riboflavin-mediated nanoscale zero-valent iron/peracetic acid system (RF/nZVI/PAA) was constructed to increase the removal of norfloxacin. Under the optimal conditions (PAA=10 mg/L, nZVI=20 mg/L, RF= 1 mg/L, and initial pH =4), complete norfloxacin removal was achieved within 30 min, accompanied by a 70 % mineralization rate. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy combined with quenching experiments quantitatively identified hydroxyl radical, carbon-centered radical, and singlet oxygen as the predominant reactive oxidative species (ROS) responsible for norfloxacin

Using Fe(II)/Fe(VI) activated peracetic acid as pretreatment of ultrafiltration for secondary effluent treatment: Water quality improvement and membrane fouling mitigation.

Ultrafiltration (UF) is a technology commonly used to treat secondary effluents in wastewater reuse; however, it faces two main challenges: 1) membrane fouling and 2) inadequate nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and organic micropollutants (OMPs) removal. To address these two issues, in this study, we applied peracetic acid (PAA), Fe(VI)/PAA, and Fe(II)/PAA as UF pretreatments. The results showed that the most effective pretreatment was Fe(II)/200 μM PAA, which reduced the total fouling resistance by 90.2%. In comparison, the reduction was only 29.7% with 200 μM PAA alone and 64.3% with Fe(VI)/200

Unexpected Role of Nitrite in Promoting Transformation of Sulfonamide Antibiotics by Peracetic Acid: Reactive Nitrogen Species Contribution and Harmful Disinfection Byproduct Formation Potential.

Peracetic acid (PAA) is an emerging oxidant and disinfectant for wastewater (WW) treatment due to limited harmful disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation. Nitrite (NO2-) is a ubiquitous anion in water, but the impact of NO2- on PAA oxidation and disinfection has been largely overlooked. This work found for the first time that NO2- could significantly promote the oxidation of sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) by PAA. Unexpectedly, the reactive nitrogen species (RNS), for example, peroxynitrite (ONOO-), rather than conventional organic radicals (R-O•) or reactive oxygen species (ROS), played major ro

New insights into the degradation of micro-pollutants in the hydroxylamine enhanced Fe(II)/peracetic acid process: Contribution of reactive species and effects of pH.

The hydroxylamine-enhanced Fe(II)/peracetic acid (PAA) process is a promising advanced oxidation process (AOP) with the generation of reactive species (RS) including RO•, •OH and Fe(IV). Nevertheless, it is still challenging to identify which RS is the major intermediate oxidant, and the reasons why the optimal condition is pH 4.5 rather than 3.0 are also unclear. Herein, the generation of RS and their contribution to the degradation of three micro-pollutants were explored. The quenching experiments and pseudo first-order kinetic model demonstrated that RO• rather than the other two RS were pr
