Outcome of resonant voice therapy for female teachers with voice disorders: perceptual, physiological, acoustic, aerodynamic, and functional measurements.

Teachers have a high percentage of voice problems. For voice disordered teachers, resonant voice therapy is hypothesized to reduce voice problems. No research has been done on the physiological, acoustic, and aerodynamic effects of resonant voice therapy for school teachers. The purpose of this study is to investigate resonant voice therapy outcome from perceptual, physiological, acoustic, aerodynamic, and functional aspects for female teachers with voice disorders. A prospective study was designed for this research. The research subjects were 24 female teachers in Taipei. All subjects receive

Long-term results after external vocal fold medialization thyroplasty with titanium vocal fold medialization implant (TVFMI).

Since its introduction in 1999 by Friedrich, the titanium vocal fold medialization implant (TVFMI) is widely used for medialization thyroplasty in glottal closure insufficiency. The purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term functional outcome after medialization thyroplasty using TVFMI. Between 1999 and 2009 123 patients (mean age 55.3 years, 76 male and 47 female) underwent medialization thyroplasty with the TVFMI (96 left, 27 right). For purpose of long-term follow-up, 33 patients could be examined. Prior to surgery, about 8 weeks and at least 1 year after surgery perceptual, ac

REM sleep behaviour disorder and visuoperceptive dysfunction: a disorder of the ventral visual stream?

In idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder (RBD), an association with visuoperceptive disorders has been described. However, such an association has not been clearly established in RBD secondary to Parkinson's disease (PD). We compared visuoperceptive function in four groups of non-demented patients (parkinsonian patients with or without RBD, patients with idiopathic RBD and control participants) via a procedure enabling the analysis of the various components of visual information processing and in order to answer the following question: is RBD associated with visuoperceptive an

Identification of visual scanning deficits in adults after cerebrovascular accident.

Visual scanning deficits can result in the inefficient acquisition of information about one's environment. For adults who have had cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs), such deficits can interfere with the independent performance of many daily activities. The present study examined five tests designed to measure visual scanning deficits in post-CVA adults. Subjects with right and left hemisphere lesions were matched with control subjects by age and sex, and their performances on the tests were compared. The difference between the matched groups was statistically significant for all tests, with the

Preliminary Evaluation of Changes in Lateral Pharyngeal Wall Motion Following Secondary Palatoplasty for Velopharyngeal Dysfunction.

Pharyngeal wall motion is a key component of velopharyngeal closure, essential for normal speech production. This study investigated changes in lateral pharyngeal wall motion in patients with cleft palate who required secondary surgery to correct velopharyngeal dysfunction. A retrospective review was conducted at a tertiary pediatric hospital, including 20 patients who underwent secondary procedures between 2015 and 2021. The procedures included (1) pharyngeal flap, (2) palatal re-repair with buccal flaps, and (3) palatal re-repair only. Lateral pharyngeal wall motion and speech outcomes were

Reliability of laryngostroboscopic evaluation on lesion size and glottal configuration: a revisit.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: This study investigated the inter-rater and intrarater reliability of four basic visual perceptual parameters (lesion size rating and glottal configuration) in laryngostroboscopic evaluation. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort Study. METHODS: Two hundred fifty-five laryngostroboscopic video samples were evaluated by three raters on four measurements: 1) mass lesion size rating, 2) amplitude of vocal fold vibration, 3) supraglottic activity, and 4) shape of the glottal closure using the modified Stroboscopy Examination Rating Form. RESULTS: Good inter- and intrarater reliability wer

A perceptual outcome measure of velopharyngeal function based on the Cleft Audit Protocol for Speech-Augmented (CAPS-A VPC-Sum): Validation through a speech osteotomy study.

BACKGROUND: The status of the velopharyngeal mechanism can be inferred from perceptual ratings of specified speech parameters. Several studies have proposed the measure of an overall velopharyngeal composite score based on these perceptual ratings and have reported good validity. The Cleft Audit Protocol for Speech-Augmented (CAPS-A) is a validated and reliable perceptual framework for the assessment of cleft speech and velopharyngeal function used by all Regional Cleft Services in the UK and Ireland. An overall velopharyngeal composite summary score based on the CAPS-A would serve as an impor

Palatopharyngeal sling: a new technique in treatment of velopharyngeal insufficiency.

OBJECTIVE: (a) Pharyngeal flap and sphincter pharyngoplasty are the procedures most frequently chosen by craniofacial surgeons for surgical management of velopharyngeal insufficiency. Both operations may be complicated by obstructive breathing and even sleep apnea. (b) The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a palatopharyngeal sling in the treatment of velopharyngeal insufficiency in cases with weak palatal mobility and its effect on breathing. METHODS: Seventeen cases of post-palatoplasty velopharyngeal insufficiency were subjected to treatment by palatopharyngeal sling. Thi

Delayed closure of the hard palate: a comparison of speech in children with open and functionally closed residual clefts.

The speech of 20 children with cleft in the hard palate that had not yet been repaired was evaluated and analysed at 7 years of age. The cleft in the hard palate was open in 14 patients and functionally closed in six. All children were born with cleft lip and palate and treated surgically according to a routine that included delayed closure of the hard palate until age 8-10 years. The soft palate was repaired at approximately 6-8 months of age. Tape recordings were used for perceptual analysis of the speech. Maxillary casts were used to assess approximate age for functional closure of the resi

Diagnosing and Managing Velopharyngeal Insufficiency in Patients With Cleft Palate After Primary Palatoplasty.

Velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) after palatoplasty is caused by improper anatomy preventing velopharyngeal closure and manifests as a hypernasal resonance, audible nasal emissions, weak pressure consonants, compensatory articulation, reduced speech loudness, and nostril or facial grimacing. A multidisciplinary team using multimodal instruments (speech analysis, nasoendoscopy, videofluoroscopy, nasometry, and magnetic resonance imaging) to evaluate velopharyngeal function should manage these patients. Careful monitoring of velopharyngeal function by a speech pathologist remains paramount for

Endoscopic vocal fold microflap: a three-year experience.

Surgical techniques for the removal of vocal fold (VF) disorders that arise within the lamina propria must permit the preservation and/or restoration of VF vibratory characteristics. The endoscopic VF microflap is designed to do such. A retrospective study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of this procedure. Forty microflaps (7 bilateral, 1 revision) were performed on 32 patients. Charts and surgical pathology findings were reviewed. Preoperative and 3-month postoperative video recorded voice samples and stroboscopic examination results were compared. Findings on perceptual voice analysi

The role of good form in young Infants' perception of partly occluded objects.

Young infants have been reported to perceive the unity of a center-occluded object when the visible ends of the object undergo common motion, but not on the basis of stationary information (e.g., P. J. Kellman & E. S. Spelke, 1983). We investigated the possibility that 4-month-old infants will attend to and utilize the global configuration (i.e., the "good form") of a partly occluded, moving object to perceive its unity and coherence behind the occluder. In the first experiment, infants viewed a partly occluded circle or cross that translated laterally. Infants who habituated in the minimum nu

Evidence relating subjective contours and interpretations involving interposition.

Subjective contours, according to one theory, outline surfaces that are apparently interposed between the viewer and background (because of the disruption of background figures, sudden termination of lines, and other interposition 'cues') but are not explicitly outlined by intensity discontinuities. This theory predicts that if the cues are not interpreted as evidence of interposition, no intervening surface need be postulated, hence no subjective contours would be seen. This prediction, however, is difficult to test because observers normally interpret the cues as interposition evidence and n

Electropalatographic data collected with and without a face mask.

This study investigates the extent to which the use of a face mask conveys linguopalatal contact changes during speech production. Electropalatographic data from five Catalan speakers were collected for different consonants, i.e., the alveolar stop [n], the alveolopalatal stop [n] and the palatal approximant [j], in the sequences [iCi] and [aCe]. Results for [n] indicate more closure retraction in the mask versus nonmask condition occurring presumably when the mask is pressed forcefully against the face in front of the mouth. The use of the mask for [n] and [j] causes an increase in dorsopalat

Office-Based Structural Autologous Fat Injection Laryngoplasty for Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis.

Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) is a common cause of incomplete glottic closure, leading to significant somatic and social disabilities. Office-based autologous fat injection laryngoplasty (AFIL) has been proposed as an effective treatment for glottic insufficiency but has not been well-studied for UVFP. We enrolled 23 patients who underwent office-based structural AFIL due to unilateral vocal paralysis at our institution between February 2021 and January 2022. In the procedure, autologous fat was harvested and injected into the vocal fold under the guidance of flexible digital endoscop

Validity of auditory perceptual assessment of velopharyngeal function and dysfunction - the VPC-Sum and the VPC-Rate.

Overall weighted or composite variables for perceptual auditory estimation of velopharyngeal closure or competence have been used in several studies for evaluation of velopharyngeal function during speech. The aim of the present study was to investigate the validity of a composite score (VPC-Sum) and of auditory perceptual ratings of velopharyngeal competence (VPC-Rate). Available VPC-Sum scores and judgments of associated variables (hypernasality, audible nasal air leakage, weak pressure consonants, and non-oral articulation) from 391 5-year olds with repaired cleft palate (the Scandcleft pro

Efficacy of intensive phonatory-respiratory treatment (LSVT) for presbyphonia: two case reports.

OBJECTIVES: Research evidence has shown that neither traditional voice therapy nor surgery was efficacious in managing age-related dysphonia, specifically for more severe cases with pronounced fold atrophy or larger glottal gaps. The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of intensive respiratory-phonatory treatment (Lee Silverman voice treatment [LSVT]) for glottal incompetence associated with presbyphonia. STUDY DESIGN: Nonrandomized prospective study. METHODS: Two subjects with age-related vocal fold bowing received 4 weeks of the LSVT. Strobolaryngoscopic examination, phonator

Effect of prematurity and low birth weight in visual abilities and school performance.

BACKGROUND: Prematurity and low birth weight are known risk factors for cognitive and developmental impairments, and school failure. Visual perceptual and visual motor skills seem to be among the most affected cognitive domains in these children. AIMS: To assess the influence of prematurity and low birth weight in visual cognitive skills and school performance. METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study, which included 80 boys and girls in an age range from 5 to 13. Subjects were grouped by gestational age at birth (preterm, <37 weeks; term, 37-42 weeks) and birth weight (small for ges

Effects of individually calibrated white and pink noise vestibular stimulation on standing balance of young healthy adults.

Imperceptible noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS) improves standing balance due to the presence of stochastic resonance (SR). There is, however, a lack of consensus regarding the optimal levels and type of noise used to elicit SR like dynamics. We aimed to confirm the presence of SR behavior in the vestibular system of young healthy adults by examining postural responses to increasing amplitudes of white and pink noise stimulation scaled to individual cutaneous perceptual threshold. Forty (40) healthy young participants (19 males, 25.1 ± 5.6 years) were randomly divided into a group t
