Two cortical deficits underlie amblyopia: A multifocal fMRI analysis.

Amblyopia is a relatively common (incidence 3%) developmental disorder in which there is loss of vision as a consequence of a disruption to normal visual development. Although the deficit is monocular and known to be of cortical origin, the nature of the processing deficit is controversial. Human behavioral studies have identified two main deficits - a loss of contrast sensitivity and perceived spatial distortions. Here we use a multifocal fMRI approach to ascertain, in a group of anisometropic amblyopes, whether these two deficits have a single common cause or whether they are the result of t

Media Messages and Perception of Risk for Ebola Virus Infection, United States.

News media have been blamed for sensationalizing Ebola in the United States, causing unnecessary alarm. To investigate this issue, we analyzed US-focused news stories about Ebola virus disease during July 1-November 30, 2014. We found frequent use of risk-elevating messages, which may have contributed to increased public concern.

Viewer-centered and body-centered frames of reference in direct visuomotor transformations.

It has been hypothesized that the end-point position of reaching may be specified in an egocentric frame of reference. In most previous studies, however, reaching was toward a memorized target, rather than an actual target. Thus, the role played by sensorimotor transformation could not be disassociated from the role played by storage in short-term memory. In the present study the direct process of sensorimotor transformation was investigated in reaching toward continuously visible targets that need not be stored in memory. A virtual reality system was used to present visual targets in differen

The effect of Bangerter filters on optotype acuity, Vernier acuity, and contrast sensitivity.

PURPOSE: Bangerter filters are designed to cause progressive degradation of distance optotype acuity to predicted levels (density label indicating expected decimal acuity) and are used to treat amblyopia and diplopia. Few authors have reported data regarding induced acuity deficits. We investigated the effect of Bangerter filters on distance and near optotype acuity, vernier acuity, and contrast sensitivity. METHODS: Fifteen subjects with best-corrected optotype acuity of at least 20/25 in each eye were blurred sequentially in one eye with 7 Bangerter filters (densities <0.1, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0

Memory for the position of stationary objects: disentangling foveal bias and memory averaging.

The perceived and remembered position of stationary target objects is subject to a large number of distortions. Objects are localized toward the fovea, and when an additional object (distractor) is presented, a tendency to average target and distractor position was observed. These distortions in visual short-term memory have been referred to as foveal bias and memory averaging, respectively. Because most studies on memory averaging did not monitor eye fixation, foveal bias and memory averaging may have been confounded. That is, observers may have fixated the distractor. To disentangle these fa

Two-tone distortion on the basilar membrane of the chinchilla cochlea.

Basilar membrane responses to pairs of tones were measured, with the use of a laser velocimeter, in the basal turn of the cochlea in anesthetized chinchillas. Frequency spectra of basilar membrane responses to primary tones with frequencies (f1, f2) close to the characteristic frequency (CF) contain prominent odd-order two-tone distortion products (DPs) at frequencies both higher and lower than CF (such as 2f1-f2, 3f1-2f3, 2f2-f1 and 3f2-2f1). For equal-level primaries with frequencies such that 2f1-f2 equals CF, the magnitude of the 2f1-f2 DP grows with primary level at linear or faster rates

Pathological gambling treated with cognitive behavior therapy: a case report.

A novel approach to the cognitive behavioral treatment of pathological gambling is described. The approach is based on the hypothesis that biased information may form the basis of the rules governing gambling behavior. The treatment focused on modifying assumptions and beliefs underlying the gambling behavior of a 47-year-old male with a 26-year gambling history. Based on a 6-month follow-up, the intervention successfully reduced the frequency of the client's gambling behavior from 10 times per month in the 3 years prior to treatment to three total times in the 6-month follow-up period.

Changes in judgment of duration with different patterns of auditory information for individuals confined to bed.

A theoretical proposition that changes in the organization and structure of auditory information result in changes in temporal experience was tested in this study. Changes were measured in the judgment of duration of a 40-second interval that occurred in three different patterns of auditory information among individuals confined to bed. The sample consisted of 90 men and 90 women aged 18 to 35 years who had no known physical or mental health problems. Subjects rested in bed in a comfortable room for two and one-half hours. Each subject received one of three forms of auditory information-called

A technique for obturating palatal fistulas.

Use of nontoxic self-adhesive material is described to obturate residual hard palate fistulas. This material may be used during perceptual and aerodynamic speech assessments to evaluate speech distortion and the relative contributions of velopharyngeal port and fistula to nasal air leakage during speech. It may also be used as an interim obturator prior to surgical repair of a fistula.

Infectious causes of Alice in Wonderland syndrome.

Alice-in-Wonderland syndrome (AIWS) is a perceptual disorder embracing a spectrum of self-experienced paroxysmal body image illusions including most commonly distortions of shape (metamorphopsia), size (macropsia or micropsia), distance (pelopsia or teleopsia), movement, and color among other visual and somesthetic distortions. Depersonalization, derealization, and auditory hallucinations have also been described. Recent reports suggest that infectious diseases are the predominant etiology for AIWS, especially among children. This article reviews current understanding regarding the association

[Paroxysmal perceptual alteration. An unknown side effect of antipsychotics?].

: Paroxysmal perceptual alteration (PPA) is a syndrome that may occur as an unknown side effect of antipsychotics. Patients can develop complaints of perceptual distortions when using antipsychotics, usually accompanied by severe tension and anxiety. I describe the case of a 32-year-old man who developed PPA in reaction to various antipsychotics. The complaints were severely disabling for him. Based on this case, the symptoms, prevalence, (differential) diagnosis, pathophysiological hypotheses and treatment of this unknown side effect are discussed. The aim of the discussion is to create aware

Perceptual Disturbances and Disorders in the ICD-11: An Overview and a Proposal for Systematic Classification.

The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) has been developed and edited by the World Health Organisation and represents the global standard for recording health information and causes of death. The ICD-11 is the eleventh revision and came into effect on 1 January 2022. Perceptual disturbances refer to abnormalities in the way sensory information is interpreted by the brain, leading to distortions in the perception of reality. These can manifest as distorted perceptions or as phantom perceptions and can occur in all sensory modalities as visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory tactile,

Pupil psychosensory reflex in response to own and standardised silhouettes in patients with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the physiological response of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) to different types of silhouettes using pupillometry. METHODS: We measured the pupil psychosensory reflex (PSR) of 42 patients with AN and 35 healthy controls in response to standardised body silhouettes and to pictures of their own silhouettes digitally modified to represent different body mass indices (BMI). Perceptual distortion and body dissatisfaction were assessed using Anamorphic Micro Software©. Twenty-three of the recruited patients were tested up to four times during an inpatient

Influence of adenotonsillar hypertrophy on /s/-articulation in children--effects of surgery.

Tonsillar hypertrophy is common in young children and affects several aspects of the speech such as distortions of the dento-alveolar consonants. The study objective was to assess /s/-articulation, perceptually and acoustically, in children with tonsillar hypertrophy and compare effects of two types of surgery, total tonsillectomy and tonsillotomy. Sixty-seven children, aged 50-65 months, on the waiting list for surgery, were randomized to tonsillectomy or tonsillotomy. The speech material was collected preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. Two groups of age-matched children were contro

Abnormal line bisection judgements in children with Tourette's syndrome.

Tourette's syndrome (TS) has been associated with loss of normal basal ganglia asymmetry, as well as loss of normal functional asymmetry, including the leftward bias on traditional visuospatial tasks such as line bisection and turning bias tests. The aim of the present study was to examine the lateralisation of visuospatial attention in TS. We examined the effect of an irrelevant moving-dot background on line bisection judgements. Nine children with a DSM IV diagnosis of TS participated, in addition to 9 healthy controls, individually matched for age, sex and IQ. Horizontal lines of varying le

Motion sickness amelioration induced by prism spectacles.

A side effect of the prescription of prism glasses according to the principle of Utermöhlen to improve mechanical reading skills of certain types of learning disabled children was the alleviation of car sickness. Besides a decrease in reported symptoms after prescription of these glasses, the effect is quantified by a decrease in estimated number of emeses per year per patient. A placebo effect is unlikely because alleviation of car sickness was not the original intention of the prescription, and the symptoms returned as soon as the spectacles were discontinued.

Distortion of perceived visual space after prolonged horizontal eccentric gaze holding.

Eye movements have long been used as a measure of underlying brain function and pathology. Specifically, rebound nystagmus has provided a behavioral window into the adaptive mechanisms of gaze holding. It is an eye movement aftereffect resulting from maintaining gaze eccentrically for a prolonged duration. Upon returning to central fixation, the eyes drift or "rebound" back toward the previously held gaze location, demonstrating an adaptive process. Little is known about how prolonged eccentric gaze holding, and the accompanying adaptation of the oculomotor system, influences the perception of

Effects of electrical stimulation of the inferior colliculus on 2f1-f2 distortion product otoacoustic emissions in anesthetized guinea pigs.

The effects of electrical stimulation of the inferior colliculus (IC) on the activation of olivocochlear nerve fibers were investigated in guinea pigs in which the 2f1-f2 distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) were recorded. Animals were anesthetized with ketamine (33 mg/kg) and xylazine (6.6 mg/kg). Bipolar electrical stimulation of the IC by a train of pulses with currents less than the threshold for evoking muscle twitches resulted in a small depression of the DPOAE amplitude by 0.1-2 dB. The maximal effect was observed when the stimulating electrodes were located in the rostro-me
