Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is the cyst arising from the cell rests of dental lamina. It can occur anywhere in the jaw, but commonly seen in the posterior part of the mandible. Radiographically, most OKCs are unilocular when presented at the periapex and can be mistaken for radicular or lateral periodontal cyst. When the cyst is multilocular and located at the molar ramus area, it may be confused to ameloblastoma. Lots of cases have been reported in the literature where OKC is associated with the nonvital tooth. So trauma could be one of the reasons in inducing this cyst. In our case, it was

Journal of oral pathology & medicine : official publication of the International Association of Oral Pathologists and the American Academy of Oral Pathology1994eng
This review paper reports recent advances in the subject of developmental odontogenic cysts, essentially those of the past decade, starting with reference to the new WHO classification (1). On keratocysts, the latest reported recurrence rates are assessed as are their mode of growth, immunocytochemistry, immunology, genetic studies, and work on specific keratocyst antigens. There is a critical account of the group of lesions which includes the gingival cyst of adults, lateral periodontal cyst, botryoid odontogenic cyst and glandular odontogenic cyst, and their possible relationship to one anot

The number and variety of cysts that occur in the jaws are greater than those in any other part of the body. Consequently, dental practitioners must keep up with advances in this field, including the definition of new entities, such as the glandular odontogenic cyst; the deletion of the old incorrect concept of maxillofacial fissural cysts, including the globulo-maxillary cyst; and the advances in the molecular biology of established cysts, such as the dentigerous cyst and the odontogenic keratocyst.

OBJECTIVES: Apical periodontitis can appear clinically as apical granulomas or radicular cysts. There is evidence that immunologic factors are involved in the pathogenesis of both pathologies. In contrast to radicular cysts, the dentigerous cysts have a developmental origin. Macrophage polarization (M1 vs M2) is a main regulator of tissue homeostasis and differentiation. There are no studies comparing macrophage polarization in apical granulomas, radicular cysts, and dentigerous cysts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-one apical granulomas, 23 radicular cysts, and 23 dentigerous cysts were analyz

RATIONALE: Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a rare type of cyst of the jaws, which shares histological features with that of lateral periodontal cyst, botryoid cyst, radicular cyst with mucous metaplasia, or low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma, making it difficult to come to a definitive diagnosis. Not many cases of GOC have been reported in the literature.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 40-year-old male patient presented with pain in the upper right front tooth region. Mild extraoral swelling, obliterating the right nasolabial fold, was present. Tenderness on percussion was present in involved teeth.

Buccal bifurcation cyst (BBC) is an uncommon inflammatory odontogenic cyst that generally occurs at the buccal region of the permanent mandibular first molars in children aged 6-8 years. The diagnosis of BBC cannot be made from the histopathologic features; therefore, diagnosis is primarily based on specific clinical and radiographic findings. In this case report, we present the clinical and radiological findings, including ultrasonography (USG) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, of a 10-year-old boy who was referred with a complaint of swelling on the lower right jaw. According

OBJECTIVE: The optimal timing of functional endoscopic sinus surgery for odontogenic infections precipitated by retention cysts of the maxillary sinus was investigated.
METHODS: Five adults who underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery were examined.
RESULTS: The root apexes of all teeth that had odontogenic infection protruded into the maxillary sinus. All teeth with odontogenic infections precipitated by the retention cysts had percussion pain, indicating they had periodontitis and pulpitis around the root apex. They were vital teeth, indicating they did not have pulp necrosis. The sma

BACKGROUND: A literature review was made to determine when third molar (3M) extraction is recommended in symptomatic patients and when it is not recommended.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A Medline (PubMed) and EMBASE search was made for articles related to indications for the extraction of 3Ms, published in the last 10 years and up until September 2018.
RESULTS: The electronic search yielded 175 articles. After eliminating duplicates, a total of 173 articles were subjected to review of the title and abstract. Only 19 studies were finally included in the systematic review. There was a well documente

Ninety-three odontogenic cysts, 42 of inflammatory and 51 of developmental origin, were grown in vitro from explants and/or cell suspensions. There was little difference in the success rate of culturing epithelium from explants of dentigerous cysts (N = 28) or odontogenic keratocysts (N = 23) (approximately 75% and 87%, respectively) and the dentigerous cyst grew particularly well from suspensions (N = 11) (91%) compared with the keratocyst (N = 19) (58%). Epithelium from developmental odontogenic cysts grew much better in vitro than did cysts of inflammatory origin (56 to 58% from explants an

The Authors conclude the chapter about the central intraosseous developmental odontogenic cysts. Some of them are very rare, others are very similar histogenetically with other more frequent cystic lesions of the jaws. Notwithstanding the radiographic and macroscopic aspect apparently similar, these lesions are very different between each other in their biological activity. The classification, suggested by Hoffman, Jacoway and Krolls lists these lesions from the least to the most aggressive. We have here considered the multiple nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome, also known as Gorlin-Goltz s

AIM: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the correlation between clinical and histopathological diagnoses of periapical inflammatory lesions, focusing mainly on cystic conditions.
METHODS: Files dating from 1998 to 2006 at the Oral Pathology Laboratory, School of Dentistry, Alfenas Federal University, Brazil, were reviewed to identify cases with histopathological diagnoses of periapical inflammatory lesions. A total of 1788 files were analyzed, and 255 cases were identified with clinical diagnoses of periapical inflammatory lesions.
RESULTS: The most prevalent clinical diagnosis

INTRODUCTION: Interleukin (IL)-17 expression has been detected in apical periodontitis lesions, but its role in the disease process remains unclear. The present study compared the expression of IL-17 in periradicular cysts and granulomas and evaluated the association of this cytokine with clinical and radiographic findings.
METHODS: Apical periodontitis lesions (18 cysts and 20 granulomas) were obtained from 38 patients subjected to periradicular surgery. Some clinical, radiographic, and cone-beam computed tomographic features were recorded. Silanized slides containing paraffin sections were

The nasolabial cyst is an uncommon midfacial cyst. Twenty-six patients with nasolabial cysts were treated at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary from 1969 to 1986. Most of these lesions manifested facial deformity, unilateral nasal obstruction, and pain when infected. The nasolabial cyst is often unrecognized or confused with other intranasal masses, or fissural and odontogenic cysts. Infection of these lesions--which occurred in 50% of the patients--may mimic facial cellulitis, periodontal abscess, acute maxillary sinusitis, or nasal furuncles. This cyst is considered to be a hamartoma because

An unusual case of an extensive radicular cyst, involving almost the entire body of the mandible, is presented. A localised tooth trauma in the remote past appeared to be the initiating factor. The pathology of the lesion stem from necrotic apical periodontitis. Histopathology confirms the type of dental cyst.

Apical periodontitis is produced in the majority of cases by intraradicular infection. Treatment consists in the elimination of the infectious agents by endodontia. Even when carrying out a correct cleansing and filling of canals, it is possible that periapical periodontitis will persist in the form of an asymptomatic radiolucency, giving rise to the post-endodontic periapical lesion. The chronic inflammatory periapical lesion is the most common pathology found in relation to alveolar bone of the jaw. From the histological point of view, it can be classified as chronic periapical periodontitis

The buccal bifurcation cyst (BBC) is a rare inflammatory odontogenic cyst of unknown etiology. It typically develops on the buccal aspect of the permanent mandibular first molar and occasionally on the permanent mandibular second molar in children 4 to 14 years old. Distinct clinical findings of the BBC include involvement of a vital partially or fully erupted mandibular first or second molar, swelling in the affected mandibular molar region, delayed or altered eruption pattern of the involved tooth, and an increase in periodontal pocket depth when the affected tooth is partially erupted. BACKGROUND: An odontogenic keratocyst can develop at virtually any site in the jaws and is of concern because of its aggressive clinical behavior. It represents 3% to 12% of all odontogenic cysts. This paper describes the rare peripheral presentation of an odontogenic keratocyst localized to the maxillary anterior gingiva and its differential diagnosis.
METHODS: A patient presented with a round yellow nodule on the maxillary gingiva between the left canine and first premolar. Clinical examination ruled out periapical abscess, periodontal abscess, and lateral periodontal cyst. A differential d

The paradental cyst is an inflammatory odontogenic cyst arising in conjunction with partially erupted vital teeth associated with pericoronitis. In this study of six cases, these cysts were found primarily adjacent to the buccal root surface of mandibular third molars. Radiographically, they presented as well-defined radiolucencies superimposed over the roots of the affected teeth. Where extracted teeth were available for examination, these cysts were usually associated with a developmental enamel projection or ridge extending into the buccal bifurcation. These developmental anomalies may be i
