Effect of retention of gingival sulcular epithelium on attachment and pocket depth after periodontal surgery.

Both the modified Widman flap and the intrasulcular incision technique produced significant and similar reductions in pocket depth and increases in attachment. Loss of attachment occurred where the initial pocket depth was less than 3 mm. Both techniques resulted in significant and similar increases in gingival recession. Neither technique affected tooth mobility or plaque scores to a clinically important degree. Historically, the necessity for removal of the sulcular epithelium in the course of periodontal therapy is a widely accepted tenet. This study fails to clinically validate this concep

Effects of alginate coated on PLGA microspheres for delivery tetracycline hydrochloride to periodontal pockets.

The effects of alginate coated on tetracycline (Tc) loaded poly (D, L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres fabricated by double emulsion solvent evaporation technique for local delivery to periodontal pocket were investigated. Alginate coated PLGA microspheres showed smoother surface but enlarged their particle sizes compared with those of uncoated ones. In addition, alginate coated microspheres enhanced Tc encapsulation efficiency (E.E.) from 11.5 +/- 0.5% of uncoated ones to 17.9 +/- 0.5%. Moreover, all of the coated PLGA microspheres even fabricated at different conditions could pro

Use of a periodontal resective procedure (proximal wedge technique) for treating gingival and periodontal pockets of mandibular canine teeth in dogs.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the ability of a periodontal resective procedure (the Proximal Wedge Technique) to improve the long-term health of the mandibular canines by reducing probing depths immediately post-surgery via targeted tissue recontouring and precise debridement. The technique aims to enhance periodontal health and stabilize the supporting structures of strategically important adjacent canine teeth, including alveolar bone, rather than relying solely on mandibular incisor extractions with simple closure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective records review compiled da

An injectable photopolymerizable chitosan hydrogel doped anti-inflammatory peptide for long-lasting periodontal pocket delivery and periodontitis therapy.

Periodontitis is a common chronic inflammatory disease caused by plaque that leads to alveolar bone resorption and tooth loss. Inflammation control and achieving better tissue repair are the key to periodontitis treatment. In this study, human β-Defensin 1 short motif Pep-B with inflammation inhibition and differentiation regulation properties, is firstly used in the treatment of periodontitis, and an injectable photopolymerizable Pep-B/chitosan methacryloyl composite hydrogel (CMSA/Pep-B) is constructed. We confirm that Pep-B improves inflammation, and restores osteogenic behavior and functio

Infrabony Periodontal Pocket Therapy With Autogenous Bone and Platelet-Rich Plasma in Dogs: A Case Series.

Although dogs frequently suffer from periodontal disease, there is a lack of periodontal regeneration material for successful regeneration of periodontal pockets. This study presents a case series wherein periodontal tissue regeneration therapy using a mixture of autogenous bone and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) was performed in 4 dogs with periodontitis. The advantage of both autogenous bone and PRP in periodontal tissue regeneration therapy has been reported previously. In addition, there are no limitations in accessing either of these materials, as they are obtained from the animal that is bei

The efficacy of adjunctive periodontal therapies during supportive periodontal care in patients with residual pockets. A systematic review and meta-analysis.

While it is well-established that patients that develop signs of relapsing periodontitis in supportive periodontal care (SPC) will need to repeat subgingival instrumentation of the residual pockets, less certainty is available in terms of which protocol should be followed and whether the use of adjunctive therapies or physical agents might provide additional benefits to repeated instrumentation alone. The aim of this systematic review was therefore to assess whether repeating subgingival instrumentation in combination with adjunctive therapies (other than antimicrobials) might provide a signif

Controlled release of iodine from cross-linked cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks for prolonged periodontal pocket therapy.

Effective therapeutic system to periodontitis was designed using cross-linked cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (COF) as carrier for iodine and further suspended in hydroxyethyl cellulose gel as I2@COF-HEC hydrogel. Inclusion of iodine within the COF was demonstrated by SR-FTIR spectral and characteristic DSC and TGA changes. Molecular modelling identified the interaction of iodine with both COF central cavity and individual cyclodextrin moieties of COF. In vitro results of study demonstrated that iodine release in artificial saliva from I2@COF-HEC hydrogel could be extended up to 5 days, w

Single-flap versus double-flap approach for periodontal pocket reduction in supraosseous defects: a comparative study.

PURPOSE: The single-flap approach (SFA) is a minimally invasive technique with limited mucoperiosteal flap elevation to gain access to the buccal/palatal aspects, thus limiting post-surgical complications. The purpose of the present study was to gain insights into the impact of the SFA over the double-flap approach (DFA) on periodontal flap treatment outcomes and patient compliance in terms of discomfort and time taken for surgical procedures. METHODS: Twenty patients with persistent probing pocket depths of ≥5 mm were scheduled for the SFA (test site) and for the DFA (control site). All the

Periodontal healing following non-surgical repair of an old perforation with pocket formation and oral communication.

Iatrogenic perforations negatively impact the outcome of endodontic treatments. Studies on prognostic factors showed that perforations in the coronal third of the root with periodontal pocket formation have an unfavorable prognosis. A 36-year-old female was referred for endodontic evaluation of tooth #13 with a history of an iatrogenic perforation, happened 3 years ago. There was a sinus tract associated with perforation, 10 mm probing on the mesial and mesio-palatal, bleeding on probing, radiolucent lesion adjacent to the perforation and complete resorption of the interdental bone between tee

A mini-review on novel intraperiodontal pocket drug delivery materials for the treatment of periodontal diseases.

Periodontal disease is defined as chronic inflammatory condition characterized by the destruction of the periodontal tissues causing loss of connective tissue attachment, loss of alveolar bone, and the formation of pathological pockets around the diseased teeth. The use of systemic antibiotics has been advocated for its treatment, but concerns emerged with respect to adverse drug reactions and its contribution to bacterial resistance. Thus local drug delivery devices have been developed that aim to deliver a high concentration of antimicrobial drugs directly to the affected site, while minimiz
