Distribution of periodontal pathogens in Korean aggressive periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Microbial associations in aggressive periodontitis versus different ethnic origins are substantially unknown. We undertook this study to determine the prevalence of seven putative periodontopathogens in Korean patients and to evaluate microbial differences in localized and generalized aggressive periodontitis patients. METHODS: Thirty-nine aggressive periodontitis patients between 20 and 35 years old (24 males and 15 females; mean age 29.6 years) were selected according to clinical criteria. The patients were subclassified into 17 localized and 22 generalized aggressive periodonti

Localized juvenile periodontitis or localized aggressive periodontitis.

In general, the new term "localized aggressive periodontitis" replaces what was previously known as "localized juvenile periodontitis." Similarly, "generalized aggressive periodontitis" replaces what used to be called "generalized juvenile periodontitis." Aggressive periodontitis is a specific type of periodontitis with clearly identifiable clinical and laboratory findings, making it sufficiently different from chronic periodontitis and warranting separate classification. Not all the characteristics must be present to assign a diagnosis or classify the disease. The diagnosis may be based on cl

[Microbiology of periodontitis. 1. The infective nature of periodontitis].

In the last years, guided tissue regeneration (GTR) and implantology have opened new possibilities for practical periodontologists in the treatment of advanced cases. For both techniques the successful therapy of the local infection of the pocket is a prerequisite. In the near future rapid tests for microbiological diagnoses and slow release devices for antibiotics will be available to achieve this aim easier. The following article will present the microbiological aspects of periodontitis and plaque control and show their relevance for the practitioner.

[Microbiology of periodontitis. 2. Microbiological diagnosis of periodontitis].

By common methods like scaling and root planing, flap procedures or surgical furcation treatment, a successful therapy of periodontal disease is possible in about 90% of the cases. The remaining 10%, mainly patients with juvenile or rapidly progressive periodontitis, are causing great problems, due to poor treatment response and frequent, local or general recidives. In the future, microbiological tests for a precise diagnosis of the pocket flora will be used in the dental office. They can provide better indications for additional antibiotic therapy. The present article reviews several microbio

[Bacterial invasion in periodontitis, is it important in periodontal treatment?].

During the progression of periodontal disease bacteria invade the epithelial lining of the gingival pocket and the underlying connective tissue. This invasion was demonstrated in acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG), localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP), rapidly progressive periodontitis in adults (RPP) and in children with Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome associated periodontitis. Using morphologic criteria or fluorescent antibody staining techniques spirochetes, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Bacteroides gingivalis, B. intermedius, Actinomyces species, Fusobacterium nucleatum and

The lateral periodontal cyst and isolated periodontal defects.

Over a period of 4 years, 41 isolated, advanced periodontal defects were selected for histologic examination. The objective of this study was to establish the presence of cystic epithelium. Twenty of the biopsies fulfilled the criteria for lateral periodontal cyst (LPC). These results indicate that there is a distinct possibility that proliferation of epithelial elements other than crevicular could be implicated in isolated periodontal defects.

Description of the subgingival microbiota of periodontally untreated Mexican subjects: chronic periodontitis and periodontal health.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested that changes in the prevalence and/or proportion of distinct microorganisms characterize the subgingival microbial profiles of populations around the world. At present, no information is available on the subgingival microbiota of Mexican subjects. The purpose of the present study was to determine the microbial composition of subgingival plaque in Mexican subjects with untreated chronic periodontitis. METHODS: A total of 44 chronic periodontitis and 20 periodontally healthy subjects (who were currently non-smokers) were selected. Clinical measurements

Comparative antibody titers to Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans in juvenile periodontitis, chronic periodontitis and periodontally healthy subjects.

Circulating antibody levels to four strains of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) were determined by means of an indirect immunofluorescent technique in three groups of 21 subjects each, including one with juvenile periodontitis (JP), one with chronic periodontitis (CP) and one free of periodontal disease (N). Mean levels of antibody to Aa were significantly elevated in the JP group as compared to the CP and N groups with respect to strains Y4, 29522 and 29524, but not strain 29523. Since strains Y4, 29522 and 29524 contain a leukotoxin that is missing from strain 29523, the results sug

Effect of micronutrient malnutrition on periodontal disease and periodontal therapy.

Periodontitis is a complex chronic inflammatory noncommunicable disease, initiated by the development of a dysbiotic microbial plaque biofilm below the gingival margin. Whilst the pathogenic biofilm is a "necessary cause" of periodontitis, it is insufficient on its own to cause the disease, and a destructive immune-inflammatory response is a key to the translation of risk to destructive events. Other exposures or "component causes" include individual genetic predisposition, lifestyle (including smoking and nutrition), and environmental factors. Dietary nutrients are essential for life as they

Combined periodontal and implant treatment of a case of aggressive periodontitis.

Aggressive periodontitis renders a great challenge to clinicians with regards to treatment and prosthodontic rehabilitation. A compromised remaining dentition and a tendency toward refractory disease make it difficult to establish a treatment plan that renders an adequate long-term prognosis. Although the use of implants has become a common treatment modality, limited data are available on the use of dental implants in patients with aggressive periodontitis, especially for cases necessitating the use grafting procedures preceding implant placement. In this case report the successful treatment

Periodontal pathogens in periodontal pockets and in carotid atheromatous plaques.

AIM: In the last years the relationship between periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases has been a subject of increasing research. The identification of periodontopathic bacteria in atheromas can contribute to our knowledge of such an association. The aim of our study was to assess the concomitant presence of 5 periodontal pathogens (Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Prevotella intermedia, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, and Tannerella forsythia) in periodontal pockets and in carotid atheromas recovered from the same individuals. METHODS: Twenty-one patients with chronic

Studies on periodontitis and analyses of individuals at risk for periodontal diseases.

Periodontal disease is an infectious disease initiated by microbial plaque, which accumulates on the tooth surface at the gingival margin and induces an inflammatory reaction. The function of the inflammatory process is to protect the host, however the process may also contribute to tissue destruction. Most individuals show gingival inflammation, but only a limited number suffer from periodontitis i.e. loss of attachment. Without treatment, periodontitis will result in tooth mobility and subsequent tooth mortality. Independent of ethnicity, 10%-15% of an adult population will develop severe pe
