The recent outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) from Wuhan, China, was caused by a single-stranded RNA virus which has kept the entire world stranded. The outbreak was first diagnosed with respiratory illness, but recent findings of acute necrotizing hemorrhage of brain, brain encephalopathy, and the presence of the virus in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) have unveiled its neuroinvasivness. Various clinical features related to the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS) due to COVID-19 infection are now identified. We demonstrate here

Up to 70% of cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) follow a preceding infection and a number of infectious agents have been described. We present a previously unreported association of Streptococcus viridans infective endocarditis affecting a prosthetic aortic valve and Guillain-Barré syndrome. This case highlights that this potentially life-threatening diagnosis should be considered in any patient presenting with symptoms of peripheral nervous system dysfunction following an infective illness.

In case of nervous damages, like nervous system trauma or various neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia or Parkinson, several treatments are available to restore neurological function. In spite of these treatments, results are often insufficient or not satisfactory in many neurologic diseases, especially for central nervous system (CNS) lesions. To minimize neurological dysfunction, it is critical to reduce neuronal death, avoiding loss of the synaptic connections, and securing viable neurons to extend axons. Unfortunately, there are no effective strategies to fulfill these basic needs e

Prion diseases are often caused by peripheral uptake of the infectious agent. To reach their ultimate target, the central nervous system (CNS), prions enter their host, replicate in lymphoid organs and spread via peripheral nerves. Once the agent has reached the CNS disease progression is rapid, resulting in neurodegeneration and death. many of these mechanisms have been uncovered using genetically modified mice. A recently published study demonstrated the presence of pathological prion protein in sympathetic ganglia of patients suffering from variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, suggesting that

Alpha-2 adrenergic receptors are spread throughout the central and peripheral nervous system, specifically in the pontine locus coeruleus, medullospinal tracts, rostral ventrolateral medulla, and the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. Alpha-2 agonist agents cause neuromodulation in these centers, leading to sedation, analgesia, vasodilatation, and bradycardia with little effect on the respiratory drive, which accounts for their good safety profile. The 2 major drugs in this group are clonidine and dexmedetomidine. Their clinical applications in anesthesia practice include providing sedation in th

Methionine-enkephalin (Met-Enk) and ZnCl2 in combination enhances active T cell rosette formation of human peripheral blood lymphocytes to a greater degree than either of the agents used separately. Enhancement of rosette formation by Met-Enk plus ZnCl2 was not inhibited by the opiate receptor antagonist naloxone but was completely blocked by the zinc chelator 1,10-phenanthroline. The results suggest a relationship between zinc and Met-Enk and that zinc may be a modulator of enkephalin binding and function in the immune system as well as the nervous system.

We have recorded three cases of Mediterranean fever harboring peripheral nerve involvement. According to the time of occurrence of the neurological symptoms, the cerebrospinal fluid analysis and electromyographic features, we admit that the peripheral nervous system can be involved in two ways in this disease. One due to the direct action of the pathogenic agent, giving place to a vasculitis. The other by an immunological mechanism originating a Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-1) is a human retrovirus and the etiologic agent for a progressive neurological disease called HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). With its primary site of involvement occurring at the thoracic spinal cord level, HAM/TSP is characterized by muscle weakness, hyperreflexia, lower extremity spasticity, and urinary disturbance. However, HAM/TSP has also been associated with other autoimmune disorders as well as widespread dysfunction within the nervous system that results in less frequent symptoms of cerebral, cerebellar

The adverse events of antiviral drugs are dose-dependent and often reversible. The nervous system is often affected and to date, many studies have been published regarding the central nervous system toxicity of antiviral agents. They may cause significant neuropsychiatric complications, which range from mild symptoms such as irritability and difficulty sleeping to severe complications such as depression, psychosis, and painful peripheral neuropathy, side effects which may necessitate discontinuation of treatment. The pathogenetic mechanisms may involve molecular targets common to other central

The nervous system has been involved in the majority (at least 75%), of cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) examined postmortem, but the pathogenetic mechanisms involved are not well understood. The predominant pathological process is opportunistic infection secondary to the decrease of T-helper (T4) cells and includes toxoplasmosis, encephalitis due to cytomegalovirus and progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy. On the other hand, mycoses (mainly cryptococcosis) are relatively uncommon. Primary lymphomas are three times more common than secondary lymphoma spreading from oth

The regulation of appetite is a complex process that we are just beginning to understand. It consists of both central and peripheral elements and involves the integration by the brain of a variety of signals from peripheral organs transmitted by neurotransmitters, peptides, hormones, and metabolites. All available anorectic drugs act by central mechanisms and have several disadvantages including limited effectiveness, side effects on the central nervous system, the development of tolerance, abuse potential, and rebound hyperphagia on discontinuance. Several appetite-modulating agents have been

Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 3 (TRPM3) is a non-selective, Ca2+-permeable ion channel that plays a pivotal role in peripheral thermosensation and nociception. Moreover, gain-of-function variants in TRPM3 underlie a spectrum of neurodevelopmental and epileptic disorders in humans, indicating an important role of TRPM3 in the central nervous system. Oxidative stress contributes to various neurological disorders of both the central and peripheral nervous system, but it is unknown whether TRPM3 activity is altered by the cellular redox state. Here, we report a direct, bidirectional modi

INTRODUCTION: Methyl bromide is a pesticide used as a fumigating agent in homes, for food storage and soil disinfection. Chronic and acute exposures to methyl bromide are known to cause damage to the central and peripheral nervous system.
OBSERVATION: We describe a case of a 31-year-old patient who developed a peripheral neuropathy due to an acute exposure on skin of methyl bromide. This patient was admitted after an accidental dermal exposure to methyl bromide while fumigating dates. The patient suffered dermal burns and vesicles on the upper limbs. Two weeks following exposure, she develope

Smoking tobacco products is the leading cause of preventable death worldwide. Coordinated efforts have successfully reduced tobacco cigarette smoking in the United States; however, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarette) and other electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) recently have replaced traditional cigarettes for many users. While the clinical risks associated with long-term ENDS use remain unclear, advancements in preclinical rodent models will enhance our understanding of their overall health effects. This review examines the peripheral and central effects of ENDS-mediated exposure to

Sarcoidosis is a rare granulomatous inflammatory disease of unknown etiology that affects the nervous system in 5-10% of cases, which is referred to as neurosarcoidosis. The clinical symptoms depend on the localization and the extent of the lesions. Cranial nerves and leptomeninges are the most common sites affected. In rare cases, the disease can also affect the peripheral nervous system. In the updated 2018 classification, the disease is defined as »definite neurosarcoidosis« when confirmed by a biopsy from the nervous system. »Probable neurosarcoidosis« is defined by typical clinical findin

In two cases of organic lead poisoning due to habitual gasoline sniffing, one patient had temporary hypomania and recovered with treatment, while the other patient (who died) had signs of severe CNS and peripheral nervous system, muscle, hepatic, and renal damage. In addition he had features of long-term inorganic lead poisoning. This and the response of both cases to chelating agents suggest that organic lead is degraded in vivo to inorganic lead.

Systemic vasculitides commonly induces peripheral neuropathies. In most cases signs and symptoms of multisystem involvement, including polyarthritis, asthma, renal and skin involvement, accompany peripheral neuropathy. In approximately one third of the patients however peripheral neuropathy is the first and only manifestation of necrotizing vasculitis. Nerve and muscle biopsy is often necessary to confirm vasculitis, which requires histological evidence for diagnosis. A focal or multifocal, axonal, ischemic neuropathy often results from involvement of nerve trunks vasa nervorum. Outcome of the

The activity of the sympathetic nervous system during the course of severe closed head injury has been evaluated in 15 patients by measuring plasma levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine. With the onset of the transition stage from midbrain syndrome to the apallic syndrome the plasma levels mainly of norepinephrine started to increase and remained high during the further course of the disease. During the remission from the apallic syndrome the elevated norepinephrine levels started to decline. The data indicate that a longlasting overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system is a characteri

Peripheral neuropathies are heterogeneous disorders presenting often with hyperalgesia and allodynia. This study has assessed if chronic constriction injury (CCI) of sciatic nerve is accompanied by increased oxidative stress and central nervous system (CNS) changes and if these changes are sensitive to treatment with thioctic acid. Thioctic acid is a naturally occurring antioxidant existing in two optical isomers (+)- and (-)-thioctic acid and in the racemic form. It has been proposed for treating disorders associated with increased oxidative stress. Sciatic nerve CCI was made in spontaneously
