Role of SARS-COV-2 and ACE2 in the pathophysiology of peripheral vascular diseases.

The occurrence of a novel coronavirus known as severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), created a serious challenge worldwide. SARS-CoV-2 has high infectivity, the ability to be transmitted even during the asymptomatic phase, and relatively low virulence, which has resulted in rapid transmission. SARS-CoV-2 can invade epithelial cells, hence, many patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 have suffered from vascular diseases (VDs) in addition to pulmonary manifestations. Accordingly, SARS-CoV-2 may can worsen the clinical condition of the patients with pre-existing VDs. Endothelia

An overview on peripheral vascular disease in blackfoot disease-hyperendemic villages in Taiwan.

The arsenic-related peripheral vascular disease found to be endemic along the southwestern coast of Taiwan is reviewed. In the early 20th century a strange disease involving the lower extremities characterized by typical clinical symptoms and signs of progressive arterial occlusion was reported in a confined area located along the southwestern coast of Taiwan. The disease was locally called "blackfoot disease" because of its gangrenous appearance involving the feet of the patients. The prevalence of this disease ranged from 6.51 to 18.85 per 1,000 population in different villages. Epidemiologi

Implications of Kidney Disease in Patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease and Vascular Calcification.

Persons with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at a higher risk of developing peripheral artery disease (PAD) and its adverse health outcomes than individuals with normal renal function. Among patients with CKD, PAD is predominantly characterized by the calcification of the medial layer of arterial vessels in addition to intimal atherosclerosis and calcification. Vascular calcification (VC) is initiated by CKD-associated hyperphosphatemia, hypercalcemia, high concentrations of parathyroid hormone (PTH) as well as inflammation and oxidative stress. VC is widely prevalent in this cohort (>80% dia

[Global vascular intervention for peripheral vascular disease: endovascular integrated approach and future trend].

Cardiovascular diseases are systemic processes frequently involving multiple vascular beds in a single individual. From carotid artery to tibial artery, evolving endovascular therapies have transformed the management of vascular disease. Endovascular therapy is more frequently employed for revascularization technique. These procedures often times are performed by a single operator. Precise vascular imaging technique and catheter handling skill are required in vascular interventionists. This article describes global vascular angiography and intervention. Integrated management on panvascular pat

Follow-up of patients after revascularisation for peripheral arterial diseases: a consensus document from the European Society of Cardiology Working Group on Aorta and Peripheral Vascular Diseases and the European Society for Vascular Surgery.

Peripheral arterial diseases comprise different clinical presentations, from cerebrovascular disease down to lower extremity artery disease, from subclinical to disabling symptoms and events. According to clinical presentation, the patient's general condition, anatomical location and extension of lesions, revascularisation may be needed in addition to best medical treatment. The 2017 European Society of Cardiology guidelines in collaboration with the European Society for Vascular Surgery have addressed the indications for revascularisation. While most cases are amenable to either endovascular

Structured surveillance of patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease after peripheral vascular interventions.

Longterm follow-up and surveillance after either an endovascular or an open surgical vascular intervention is an essential part of the angiologist's or vascular surgeon's care for patients with peripheral arterial disease. This includes diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular risk factors, selection and monitoring of antiplatelet and/or anticoagulant therapy after revascularization, and surveillance of the results of the vascular intervention. This integrated approach to patients' care will improve patients' prognosis quoad vitam and quoad extremitatem and their quality of life. We summarize

[Hearing disorders in peripheral arterial vascular diseases. A contribution on hearing loss in the aged].

Otologic-audiologic examination was carried out in 171 patients (aged between 37-86; average age 64) with confirmed internal angiologic peripheral arterial vascular disease. Additional findings were observed in 94 of these patients who revealed an obliteration of the internal carotid artery or cerebral ischaemic stroke. Diseases of the ear were excluded clinically and audiologically. The mean hearing loss shows a sensory-neural high-tone loss in the tone audiogram. The range of scatter increases proportionately to the increase in tone loss. If compared with the physiologic examination of geria

Pharmacist optimization of lipid therapy in patients with peripheral vascular disease.

PURPOSE: American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association guidelines recommend high-intensity statin therapy and consideration for nonstatin therapy for patients with peripheral vascular disease (PVD); however, utilization rates remain suboptimal. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether pharmacist intervention for patients with PVD could improve the percentage of patients discharged on a high-intensity statin. METHODS: The study used a single-center pre/post design and included patients with PVD who underwent peripheral bypass during their admission. Postinterven

Incidental Muscle Uptake of 177Lu-DOTATATE in Peripheral Vascular Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Even in remission, cognitive deficits are frequently observed in bipolar disorder. Because these deficits are assessed with complex and comprehensive tests, they seem to be neglected in routine daily practice; however, assessing them with short self-rated questionnaires could be beneficial. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between objective and subjective cognitive assessment in bipolar disorder. METHOD: The study included 38 patients with bipolar disorder that were in remission for at least 6 months and 19 healthy controls. The Stroop Test and Auditory Verbal Learni

A case of polyarteritis nodosa presenting initially as peripheral vascular disease.

Polyarteritis nodosa is a rare necrotizing vasculitis that can be progressive and fatal, and its initial presenting symptom may be leg claudication due to peripheral vascular ischemia. To date, there have been fewer than ten case reports of polyarteritis nodosa presenting as peripheral vascular disease. We report a case of a 38-year-old man initially diagnosed to have premature peripheral vascular disease who presented 1 year later with symptoms consistent with giant cell arteritis and subsequently developed bowel ischemia leading to a fatal outcome. Based on the autopsy and the patient's clin

Tropical chronic pancreatitis and peripheral vascular disease. A case report.

CONTEXT: It is well-known that subjects with diabetes resulting from tropical chronic pancreatitis are prone to diabetic microvascular complications (neuropathy, nephropathy and retinopathy). However, macrovascular complications (coronary artery disease, stroke and peripheral vessel disease) are rare, as these subjects are younger, leaner and have lower cholesterol levels. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 51-year-old male who had tropical chronic pancreatitis, diabetes and severe peripheral vessel disease with gangrene. He was lean, had borderline lipid levels and was normotensive. His EC

Renal artery stenosis in patients with peripheral vascular disease in Kuwait.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify the incidence of atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (RAS) in patients with peripheral vascular disease (PVD) and its relation to any known risk factors. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This prospective study was conducted on 212 patients who were subjected to peripheral angiography for symptoms of PVD over a 3-year period from 1995 to 1998 at the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital, Kuwait. Angiographic evidence of atherosclerotic disease and its severity was recorded in renal, abdominal aorta, iliac, femoral, popliteal and below-knee arteries. In addition, a

Drug-eluting stents in peripheral vascular disease: eliminating restenosis.

Transcatheter endovascular therapy for peripheral atherosclerotic disease has become more popular. In general, good results have been reported in focal aortoiliac disease. However, the long-term patency of angioplasty in longer, more distal lesions has been less satisfactory. Stenting has not been shown to improve long-term patency compared to angioplasty alone. Drug-eluting stents have shown promise in preventing coronary restenosis, and preliminary results in peripheral arterial disease are encouraging. This review article will discuss the current status of endovascular therapy of aortoiliac

Prevalence of subclavian artery stenosis in patients with peripheral vascular disease.

Internal mammary arteries (IMA) as conduits in coronary artery bypass grafting are superior to saphenous vein grafts. If there is subclavian artery stenosis (SAS) proximal to the IMA graft, impairment of flow to the IMA may occur. If the stenosis is severe, retrograde flow from the grafted coronary artery to the brachial artery may lead to angina. Following the identification of 2 cases of angina secondary to subclavian artery stenosis at their institution, the authors prospectively performed arch angiography in a cohort of patients with manifestations of peripheral vascular disease undergoing

Cocaine-induced peripheral vascular occlusive disease--a case report.

Two patients with cocaine-induced peripheral vascular occlusive disease are presented. A 37-year-old man was admitted to the hospital for evaluation of severe pain and numbness of his feet. He had used cocaine prior to admission. Arteriography showed bilateral occlusions of superficial femoral, popliteal, and trifucation arteries. Despite repeated infusions of urokinase, he developed progressive bilateral gangrene of both legs necessitating bilateral below-knee amputations. The second patient developed similar symptoms after smoking cocaine. Arteriography showed vasospasm bilaterally from the
