Relationships between heavy metal migration in soils and landslide dynamics under conditions of modern climate change: A case study of Lake Baikal, Olkhon Island.

The problem of studying landslide processes has attracted worldwide attention due to both the increase in human activities. New data for environmental monitoring of the Lake Baikal coast were obtained. The main goal aims to establish relationships between modern climate changes and the landslide process dynamics, as expressed in the assessment of Hg, Pb, Cd contamination levels, the identification of their possible sources and interelemental relationships, as well as the evaluation of some natural factors. Some improvements to previously developed analytical and physical-mechanical techniques

Antibiotic resistome in the glacier forelands of polar regions.

UNLABELLED: Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) pose a significant threat, exacerbated by climate change impacts on polar regions, particularly melting glaciers and permafrost. While ancient antibiotic resistance exists in the environments, the release and dissemination of ARGs remain poorly understood. This study investigated ARG composition and distribution in 43 metagenomes from Arctic and Antarctic glacier forelands. We identified 154 ARGs, predominantly bacitracin resistance, followed by rifamycin, fosfomycin, vancomycin, tetracycline, and beta-lactam resistance genes. Significant correlat

Projected Methane Emissions From a Boreal Thermokarst Bog Are Sensitive to Carbon Substrate Availability, Distribution, and Transport Pathway Dominance.

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, which traps significantly more heat than carbon dioxide over short timescales, but remains underrepresented in models used for projecting future climate scenarios, particularly in permafrost landscapes. Understanding methane dynamics in northern wetlands is critical for improving projections of high-latitude carbon feedbacks to the global climate system. To address this, we integrated ecological processes driving methane production, oxidation, and transport pathways into the DVM-DOS-TEM terrestrial biosphere model. Using long-term site observations from a th

Arctic methylmercury cycling.

Anthropogenic mercury (Hg) undergoes long-range transport to the Arctic where some of it is transformed into methylmercury (MeHg), potentially leading to high exposure in some Arctic inhabitants and wildlife. The environmental exposure of Hg is determined not just by the amount of Hg entering the Arctic, but also by biogeochemical and ecological processes occurring in the Arctic. These processes affect MeHg uptake in biota by regulating the bioavailability, methylation and demethylation, bioaccumulation and biomagnification of MeHg in Arctic ecosystems. Here, we present a new budget for pools

Screening-level risk assessment of methylmercury for non-anadromous Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus).

Non-anadromous forms of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), those that are restricted to lakes and rivers, typically have higher mercury (Hg) concentrations than anadromous forms, which migrate to and from the sea. Using tissue burden data from the literature and our own analyses, we performed a screening-level risk assessment of methylmercury (MeHg) for non-anadromous Arctic char. Our assessment included 1569 fish distributed across 83 sites. Site-specific mean total Hg concentrations in non-anadromous Arctic char muscle varied considerably from 0.01 to 1.13 µg/g wet weight, with 21% (17 of 83

Uneven attention to climate tipping points.

Climate tipping points have moved from theoretical concern to a practical challenge for climate-risk assessment and governance. Yet whether scientific attention is aligned with risk-relevant characteristics of climate tipping elements (CTEs) has not been systematically assessed. Across 20,736 CTE-specific records spanning 2000-2025 and addressing 14 tipping elements, attention was concentrated on the Greenland Ice Sheet and Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, while Boreal Permafrost (abrupt thaw) and the North Atlantic Subpolar Gyre received comparatively limited attention despite the

Terrestrial Arthropod Responses to Arctic Cryosphere Degradation.

The Arctic cryosphere is undergoing dramatic changes, including declines in sea ice extent and thickness, ice sheets and glaciers, snow cover and duration and permafrost depth. These changes are having alarming direct and indirect consequences for terrestrial species, habitats and ecosystems. Such impacts are well documented and discussed for plants, birds and mammals, and we are beginning to understand the extent of links between cryospheric changes and terrestrial systems generally. However, terrestrial arthropods are rarely included in studies and reviews on this topic despite their taxonom

History of Smallpox and Its Spread in Human Populations.

Smallpox is considered among the most devastating of human diseases. Its spread in populations, initiated for thousands of years following a probable transmission from an animal host, was concomitant with movements of people across regions and continents, trade and wars. Literature permitted to retrace the occurrence of epidemics from ancient times to recent human history, smallpox having affected all levels of past society including famous monarchs. The disease was officially declared eradicated in 1979 following intensive vaccination campaigns.Paleomicrobiology dedicated to variola virus is

Genomic adaptations of novel halotolerant bacteria from extreme North Greenland.

Peary Land, northern-most Greenland, is a cold desert region whose soil microbiome remains underexplored. This is the first study to explore the halotolerant soil microbiome of this region with culture-dependent methods. Forty-nine taxonomically diverse bacterial isolates were obtained from dry soil biocrust, surface soil, and permafrost soil. Nine isolates were selected for whole genome sequencing; these genomes showed adaptations to their cold, saline native environment, such as cold shock proteins and a large number of osmoprotectant transporters. The genomes also contained several biosynth

A Perspective on the Role of Gas Hydrates in Carbon Capture, Transport, and Sequestration.

Gas hydrate-based carbon capture, transport, and sequestration (GH-CCS) has emerged as a promising alternative for mitigating anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Gas hydrates selectively encapsulate CO2 within crystalline water frameworks under moderate pressure and temperature conditions, offering advantages such as solvent-free operation, high selectivity, and inherent stability for long-term storage. This review provides a comprehensive evaluation of GH-CCS across the entire process chain, including CO2 capture, transport, and sequestration. Recent advances in hydrate-based separation from fuel ga

Biosafety of human environments can be supported by effective use of renewable biomass.

Preventing pathogenic viral and bacterial transmission in the human environment is critical, especially in potential outbreaks that may be caused by the release of ancient bacteria currently trapped in the permafrost. Existing commercial disinfectants present issues such as a high carbon footprint. This study proposes a sustainable alternative, a bioliquid derived from biomass prepared by hydrothermal liquefaction. Results indicate a high inactivation rate of pathogenic virus and bacteria by the as-prepared bioliquid, such as up to 99.99% for H1N1, H5N1, H7N9 influenza A virus, and Bacillus su

Genome Shows no Recent Inbreeding in Near-Extinction Woolly Rhinoceros Sample Found in Ancient Wolf's Stomach.

Using temporarily spaced high-coverage ancient genomes, we can assess population decline prior to extinction. However, finding suitable ancient remains for recovering this type of data is challenging. Here, we sequenced a high-coverage genome from muscle tissue of a 14,400-year-old woolly rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis)-a cold-adapted herbivore that went extinct ∼14,000-years ago-found inside a permafrost-preserved wolf's stomach. We compared genome-wide diversity, inbreeding, genetic load, and population size changes in this sample with two other Late Pleistocene Siberian woolly rhinocer

Underestimated number and significance of rock glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau.

Rock glaciers, periglacial landforms with tongue- or lobe-shaped streams of slowly deforming frozen debris, play an important role in periglacial mountainous regions. The understanding of rock glaciers and their geoecological role at regional scales has been considerably hampered due to survey difficulties. We employ an automated approach for identifying rock glaciers and compile for the first time a complete rock glacier survey over the entire Tibetan Plateau. We find over 130,000 individual rock glaciers, much more than expected from previous inventories over any areas on Earth, also suggest

Nitrogen Redox Controls on Greenhouse Gas Production in Yedoma Taliks.

Large carbon and nitrogen pools are disproportionately concentrated in the icy, Pleistocene-aged silt deposits of Arctic Yedoma permafrost. Upon thaw, these undergo microbial mineralization, releasing greenhouse gases (GHGs) including carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O). Here, we present combined geochemical data with microbial function and community dynamics from deep (7-m) talik soil boreholes in water-unsaturated yedoma upland in interior Alaska. Our results reveal significant in situ seasonal shifts in microbial function, community composition, and diversity throug

The NASA ABoVE Land, Vegetation, and Ice Sensor full waveform LiDAR airborne surveys.

Arctic and boreal regions are experiencing rapid environmental changes that include thawing permafrost and increasing disturbances. The NASA Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) sought to better understand these changes through field, airborne, and remote sensing measurements. One key airborne instrument was the Land, Vegetation, and Ice Sensor (LVIS), a wide-swath imaging laser altimeter system. LVIS conducted 32 flights during June-August periods of 2017 and 2019, capturing data across more than 91,000 km² of diverse Arctic and boreal ecosystems. The surface topography and vegetati

Large emissions of CO2 and CH4 due to active-layer warming in Arctic tundra.

Climate warming may accelerate decomposition of Arctic soil carbon, but few controlled experiments have manipulated the entire active layer. To determine surface-atmosphere fluxes of carbon dioxide and methane under anticipated end-of-century warming, here we used heating rods to warm (by 3.8 °C) to the depth of permafrost in polygonal tundra in Utqiaġvik (formerly Barrow), Alaska and measured fluxes over two growing seasons. We show that ecosystem respiration is ~30% higher in warmed plots than in control plots (0.99 μmol m-2 s-1 versus 0.67 μmol m-2 s-1, p < 0.0001, n = 79). Additionally, th

Coastal lake sediments from Arctic Svalbard suggest colder summers are stormier.

The Arctic is rapidly losing its sea ice cover while the region warms faster than anywhere else on Earth. As larger areas become ice-free for longer, winds strengthen and interact more with open waters. Ensuing higher waves also increase coastal erosion and flooding, threatening communities and releasing permafrost carbon. However, the future trajectory of these changes remains poorly understood as instrumental observations and geological archives remain rare and short. Here, we address this critical knowledge gap by presenting a continuous Holocene-length reconstruction of Arctic eolian activ

Spermatozoa and spermatids retrieved from frozen reproductive organs or frozen whole bodies of male mice can produce normal offspring.

Cryopreservation of male germ cells is a strategy to conserve animal species and strains of animals valuable to biomedical research. We tested whether mouse male germ cells could be cryopreserved without cryoprotection by simply freezing epididymides, testes, or whole bodies. The reproductive organs were isolated from killed mice and frozen for 1 week to 1 year at -80 degrees C before spermatozoa and spermatids were collected and injected into mature oocytes. Normal pups were born irrespective of strains tested (ICR and C57BL/6). Epididymides and testes frozen and transported internationally t

Physical Properties of Nanoconfined Methane Hydrate: Structure, Thermoelasticity, and Thermal Conductivity.

Large amounts of methane hydrate are trapped in natural porous media, such as marine sediments and permafrost. In this context, understanding the physical and physicochemical properties of confined methane hydrate, sometimes down to the nanoscale, is crucial for environmental and energy applications. Here, a molecular simulation strategy is employed to assess some important properties of nanoconfined methane hydrate: density, structural order parameters, thermal expansion, compressibility, and thermal conductivity. Confinement is found to affect only slightly the microscopic structure of metha

Global reports on Glutamicibacter: a mini review.

Glutamicibacter has been recently reclassified from the genus Arthrobacter and represents a rare group of actinobacteria with significant biotechnological potential. Based on 16S rRNA signatures and phylogenomic evidence, its species have been discovered in diverse habitats including soils, sediments, wetlands, permafrost, saline coasts, and deserts. Ecologically, they act as endophytes, rhizosphere partners, and pioneers in extreme environments, reflecting exceptional resilience. These rare actinobacteria exhibit distinct biochemical profiles and follow a rod-coccus life cycle dependent on gr
