Common and Unique Etiological Influences on Personality and Personality Disorders in Youth.

BACKGROUND: Personality and personality disorders (PDs) are closely related constructs, but the nature of their relationship remains uncertain. Dimensional models suggest PDs are extreme manifestations of personality traits. We investigated the etiological links between broad personality factors and dimensional PD factors using quantitative analyses of common and unique genetic and environmental etiological factors affecting both normative and deviant personalities, emphasizing methods to minimize measurement bias. METHODS: Seven national twin cohorts participated (N = 2,353 twins from 1,188

Utility of the bright and dark personality inventory in assessing personality pathology.

BACKGROUND: Contemporary approaches to personality pathology increasingly emphasize dimensional models, a shift reflected in recent diagnostic frameworks such as the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) and the ICD-11. Aligned with this perspective, the Bright and Dark Personality Inventory (BDPI), grounded in the five-factor model, was developed to dimensionally assess both general ("General 5") and maladaptive ("Dark 5") personality domains. This study focused on maladaptive personality traits and examined the incremental utility of the BDPI's Dark 5 in identifying person

Personality in Alcohol and Opioid Use Disorder: A Multiphasic Personality Questionnaire Study.

BACKGROUND: This study explored the relationship between personality attributes and substance use disorder (SUD). Research has identified specific personality dimensions, such as neuroticism, psychoticism, antisocial personality traits, paranoia, and anxiety, as contributing factors on the way to the initiation, continuation, and relapse of SUD. PURPOSE: To explore this connection, we examined the personality profiles of subjects with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and opioid use disorder (OUD). METHODS: A total of 928 subjects, 320 with AUD, 490 with OUD and 118 healthy controls (HC), in the ag

Experiential avoidance in participants with borderline personality disorder and other personality disorders.

BACKGROUND: The present study has descriptive and predictive aims. The descriptive aims were to determine if participants with borderline personality disorder (BPD) reported higher levels of experiential avoidance (EA) than participants with other personality disorders (OPD) as well as determine if non-recovered participants with BPD reported higher levels of EA than participants with BPD who have recovered symptomatically and psychosocially. The predictive aim was to determine if the level of EA reported by participants with BPD was predicted by the severity of aspects of childhood or adult a

Personality Traits in Fibromyalgia (FM): Does FM Personality Exists? A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Fibromyalgia (FM) is the second most common rheumatic disease with many effects on patient's quality of life. It has been described as a chronic condition characterized by widespread musculo-skeletal pain, sleep disorders and prominent fatigue. Regarding the role of personality factors in fibromyalgia, researchers have focused both on personality traits and psychopathological aspects showing inconsistent results. In particular, several studies have examined the role of alexithymia in FM patients, a trait of personality characterized by difficulty in identification, recognition an

Adult attachment, personality traits, and borderline personality disorder features in young adults.

Previous studies have demonstrated that insecure attachment patterns and a trait disposition toward negative affect and impulsivity are both associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD) features. According to attachment theory, insecure attachment patterns impart greater risk for the maladaptive personality traits underlying BPD. Hence, insecure attachment might be indirectly related to BPD through its association with these traits. The current cross-sectional study used structural equation modeling to compare two competing models of the relationship between adult attachment patterns,

Beliefs in personality disorders: a test with the personality disorder belief questionnaire.

The hypothesis that each personality disorder (PD) is characterized by a specific set of beliefs was tested in a sample of 643 subjects, including non-patient controls, axis-I and axis-II patients, diagnosed with SCID-I and -II interviews. Beliefs of six PDs (avoidant, dependent, obsessive-compulsive, paranoid, histrionic, borderline) were assessed with the Personality Disorder Belief Questionnaire (PDBQ). Factor analyses supported the existence of six hypothesized sets of beliefs. Structural equation modeling (SEM) supported the hypothesis that each PD is characterized by a specific set of be

Histrionic personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder: sex-differentiated manifestations of psychopathy?

Little is known about the etiology of histrionic personality disorder (HPD) or its relation to other personality disorders. In this study, we examined whether HPD is etiologically related to psychopathy and more specifically whether HPD and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) are sex-typed alternative manifestations of psychopathy. In addition, based on Newman's (1987) response modulation hypothesis of psychopathy, we examined the associations between psychopathic, HPD, and ASPD features and performance on laboratory measures of passive avoidance errors and interference effects. Describing depressive personality analogues and dysthymics on the NEO-Personality Inventory-Revised.

The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) To test Widiger, Trull, Clarkin, Sanderson, and Costa's (1994) description of depressive personalities' profile scores on the NEO-Personality Inventory-Revised (NEO-PI-R; Costa & McCrae, 1992); and (b) to determine the degree of empirical overlap between depressive personality analogues and dysthymics on the NEO-PI-R. As predicted, depressive personality analogues (DPAs) had significantly higher mean scores on the Anxiety, Depression, and Self-Consciousness NEO-PI-R facets of Neuroticism than did controls, but not on the Tendermindedness facet. On the

The relationship of histrionic personality disorder to antisocial personality and somatization disorders.

The authors examined the association of antisocial personality disorder, somatization disorder, and histrionic personality disorder, both within individuals and within families, in 250 patients. All three disorders overlapped considerably within individuals; the strongest relationship was between antisocial personality and histrionic personality. A high prevalence of antisocial personality was reported in the families of patients with somatization disorder but not in the families of patients with histrionic personality. The authors suggest that histrionic individuals develop antisocial persona

The Complexity of Borderline Personality Disorder: Network Analysis of Personality Factors and Defense Styles in the Context of Borderline Personality Organization.

OBJECTIVE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is known to share characteristics with a variety of personality disorders (PDs) and exhibits diverse patterns of defense mechanisms. To enhance our understanding of BPD, it's crucial to shift our focus from traditional categorical diagnostics to the dimensional traits shared with other PDs, as the borderline personality organization (BPO) model suggests. This approach illuminates the nuanced spectrum of BPD characteristics, offering deeper insights into its complexity. While studies have investigated the comorbidity of BPD with other PDs, resear

Revitalizing personality disorder research.

Not long ago, personality disorder (PD) research stood at the forefront of a paradigm shift toward dimensional models of psychopathology. But a decade after PD research promised to reshape diagnosis and treatment, the field finds itself stalled-methodologically stagnant and conceptually insular. This special issue aims to redirect that course. It features nine contributions organized around five themes: context, theory building, personality functioning, assessment and diagnosis, and treatment. Each article illustrates what becomes possible when PD research embraces contemporary tools-from comp

Personality and behavioral dishonesty.

The past two decades have seen major developments in the study of behavioral (dis)honesty and its measurement as well as a surge of interest in the location of trait honesty within models of basic personality structure and the role of personality traits in behavioral dishonesty more generally. The present review provides an overview of the corresponding literature with a particular emphasis on recent developments and identifies the research questions for which we now have relatively reliable knowledge as well as those that will require future research.

Loneliness in Personality Disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Loneliness is a common experience in patients with personality disorders (PDs) that are characterized by impairment in self (identity, self-direction) and interpersonal functioning (empathy, intimacy). Here, we review studies assessing the association of loneliness with PD or PD traits including DSM-5's Alternative Model of PD (AMPD). RECENT FINDINGS: The number of loneliness studies varied greatly among different PDs with most studies conducted in borderline PD. Across PDs, loneliness was associated with the severity of psychopathological symptoms and with several AMPD tra

[On Sylvia Plath's Personality].

In this early study, written in 1985, I examined six of the most important personality traits of Sylvia Plath, the poet and writer (1). Sylvia oscillated between positions of dependency and independence; she was characterised by sexual inhibition and promiscuity, writer's block and an explosion of writing, achievement con- straint and liberation from the constraint, emotional dependence and independence. Paradoxically, she committed suicide when far more things (children, productive creative period, publication of her novel) tied her to life than was the case before her first suicide attempt (

[Personality and somatic disorders].

In the title of this text, by somatic disorders we mean those physical illnesses clearly related to a non-psychiatric medical field, frequently termed psychosomatic illnesses and somatoform disorders. For forty years, a trend of thought has focused with pertinence on the psychological peculiarities in patients with severe somatic diseases. Moreover, causality was often supposed in the regularly mentioned association between personality features and somatoform disorders. However, the revival of the study of the earlier field of relationships between mind and body by Briquet, Charcot, Janet and

[Personality disorders and aging].

Personality disorder can be defined as an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that markedly deviates from the expectations of the individual's culture. With aging, personality disorders may improve or worsen. Their prevalence in the elderly is slightly lower than the prevalence in young adult. Furthermore, their comorbidity and co-occurrence are the rule with an increased risk of late decompensation. Categorical approach used in the current international classifications (ICD-10 and DSM-5) is not adapted to the specificities of the elderly with consequent overrepresentation of "un
