Behavioral Tendencies of Hostility: A New Approach to Personality Assessment Based on Person-in-Context Units.

There is a great deal of interest in person-in-context approaches to assessment, but such approaches typically result in idiographic conclusions. The present two studies (total N = 350) pioneer a new approach to personality assessment that integrates person-in-context units, obtained from a situational judgment test, with prototype scoring, with the present research applying a hostile person prototype. Participants who matched this prototype to a greater extent were prone to aggressive, deviant, antisocial, risky, and impulsive behaviors. Peers characterized them as hostile (Study 1) and discr

Assessing Criterion A of the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders: The Potential of Performance-Based Personality Measures.

The conceptualization of personality disorder has been refined through recent nosological advances introduced in the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD). These advances locate self and interpersonal (dys)function at the core of personality pathology. Self-report personality assessment instruments have demonstrated promise in the assessment of Criterion A domains. However, research highlighting the utility of performance-based personality assessment instruments has been largely absent in these advances, despite acknowledgment of their potential. We adhered to PRISMA review guidel

Did we personalize? Assessing personalization by an online reinforcement learning algorithm using resampling.

There is a growing interest in using reinforcement learning (RL) to personalize sequences of treatments in digital health to support users in adopting healthier behaviors. Such sequential decision-making problems involve decisions about when to treat and how to treat based on the user's context (e.g., prior activity level, location, etc.). Online RL is a promising datadriven approach for this problem as it learns based on each user's historical responses and uses that knowledge to personalize these decisions. However, to decide whether the RL algorithm should be included in an "optimized" inte

Leveraging Personality Assessment to Better Understand Traumatic Stress and Discrimination in Daily Life.

This research explores personality assessment using experience sampling methodology (ESM) as a framework for better understanding temporal dynamics associated with different conceptualizations of traumatic stress (i.e., post-traumatic stress symptoms, race/gender/age discrimination). College student participants (N = 278) completed a 14-day diary study, which included daily measures of the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) and daily items capturing self-concept, interpersonal bothers, emotions, and defenses. Results indicated that traumatic stress-related scales were associated

The conceptualization and assessment of social cognition in personality and common mental disorders.

Social Cognition is a crucial transdiagnostic construct with clinical and functional relevance across a range of neuropsychiatric disorders. Most research has focused on schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders and has informed frameworks for assessing social cognition in schizophrenia. The current review focuses on the more recent developments pertaining to personality and common mental disorders (PCMDs). Two main questions are addressed: 1. What are the important domains and patterns of social cognition impairments among the personality and common mental disorders? 2. What are the trends

Assessment of domestic cat personality, as perceived by 416 owners, suggests six dimensions.

Understanding individual behavioral differences in domestic cats could lead to improved selection when potential cat owners choose a pet with whom to share their lives, along with consequent improvements in cat welfare. Yet very few attempts have been made to elicit cat personality dimensions using the trait-based exploratory approaches applied previously, with some success, to humans and dogs. In this study, a list of over 200 adjectives used to describe cat personality was assembled. This list was refined by two focus groups. A sample of 416 adult cat owners then rated a cat they knew well o

Assessment of Sex Offenders With the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality /Inventory-2-Restructured Form.

This study examined the association between scores on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) with static and dynamic risk assessment instruments, including the STATIC-99 and Level of Service Inventory-Revised (LSI-R). The sample included 304 male adults who were convicted of sexual offenses against children and were referred to a sex offender treatment program. On average, the sample had a Low-Moderate risk of re-offending according to the STATIC-99 and LSI-R. The results indicated that MMPI-2-RF scale scores in this setting are characterized by relativ

Clinical assessment of decision-making capacity in acquired brain injury with personality change.

Assessment of decision-making capacity (DMC) can be difficult in acquired brain injury (ABI) particularly with the syndrome of organic personality disorder (OPD) (the "frontal lobe syndrome"). Clinical neuroscience may help but there are challenges translating its constructs to the decision-making abilities considered relevant by law and ethics. An in-depth interview study of DMC in OPD was undertaken. Six patients were purposefully sampled and rich interview data were acquired for scrutiny using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Interview data revealed that awareness of deficit and th

The use of the MCMI in the personality assessment of head-injured adults.

MCMI (Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory) profiles of 79 head-injured patients were compared with self-report of personality change following head injury. Mean MCMI scale scores were highest on Scales D (Dysthymia), A (Anxiety), 6 (Antisocial), H (Somatoform), 5 (Narcissistic) and 7 (Compulsive). Taking only high-point codes above an adjusted base-rate score of 75, the sample showed most frequent elevations on A (Anxiety), D (Dysthymia), H (Somatoform), 5 (Narcissistic), 6 (Antisocial-Aggressive) and 8 (Passive-Aggressive), in order of cumulative frequency. A dimensional approach to assessing personality functioning: examining personality trait domains utilizing DSM-IV personality disorder criteria.

BACKGROUND: This study compared a dimensional, trait domain approach to characterizing personality pathology with the traditional polythetic approach with respect to their associations with interpersonal functioning and personality traits from the five factor model. METHODS: Psychiatric inpatients (N=1476) were administered the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II personality disorders. Dimensional representations of trait domains were derived from reorganizing DSM-IV criteria into personality trait domains from DSM-5 Alternative Model. Dimensional scores and personality disorder

[The alternative model of personality disorders among the French population: Assessment with brief tools].

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to study whether the French versions of the brief tools available to clinicians within the framework of the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) can account for the risks of personality disorders in the general population. Tools are available to accurately investigate either the Level of Personality Functioning (LPF) or the Pathological Personality Dimensions (PPD) which in turn allow the validation of the relevance of the AMPD for its criteria A and B. As these tools, such as Morey's Level of Personality Functioning Scale Self Rated (LPFS-SR)

Temporal stability and dynamic convergence of the Personality Assessment Screener in a prison sample.

Although the Personality Assessment Screener (PAS; Morey, 1997) has garnered substantial research interest, the measure's temporal stability and sensitivity to change have remained largely uninvestigated. The present study employs a dynamic approach to investigating the convergent and discriminant validity of the PAS by examining relationships between temporal changes on the PAS and changes on external criterion measures, thereby exploring the extent to which changes on the PAS offer meaningful information regarding changes in psychological functioning. Data were obtained from a public dataset

Who Are the Turkers? A Characterization of MTurk Workers Using the Personality Assessment Inventory.

As online data collection services such as Amazon's Mechanical Turk (MTurk) gain popularity, the quality and representativeness of such data sources have gained research attention. To date, the majority of existing studies have compared MTurk workers with undergraduate samples, localized community samples, or other Internet-based samples, and thus, there remains little known about the personality and mental health constructs of MTurk workers relative to a national representative sample. The present study addresses these limitations and broadens the scope of existing research through the use of

Identifying Criminogenic Needs Using the Personality Assessment Inventory With Males Who Have Sexually Offended.

The present study investigated the relationships between the scales of the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) and variables relevant to recidivism risk and criminogenic need to inform clinicians' use of the PAI for purposes of treatment planning and risk management. PAI profiles, risk measure and domain scores, and recidivism data were collected for 158 males who have been convicted of sexually offending. Data were analyzed to investigate whether select clinical scales of the PAI correlated with conceptually relevant domains of risk and/or recidivism. Our findings demonstrated that the ant

Homelessness and response styles on the Personality Assessment Inventory in a compensation-seeking sample.

The relationship between validity measures of the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI; Morey, 1991) and homelessness was investigated in this archival study. Two groups (N = 50) of compensation-seeking adults were included: homeless and domiciled. The purpose of the study was to determine if differences existed between these 2 groups on the validity measures of the PAI to inform the clinical evaluations of the compensation-seeking homeless. Results of independent sample t tests indicated no significant differences between the homeless and domiciled groups on the 4 validity scales and 2 addit

Personality Assessment Inventory-derived estimates of section III antisocial personality disorder and recidivism in a sample of men evaluated for sexually violent predator status.

The Personality Assessment Inventory is a broadband self-report instrument of personality, psychopathology, and response style that is commonly used in Sexually Violent Predator evaluations. These evaluations typically involve assessment of personality pathology that is empirically associated with recidivism, such as psychopathic personality disorder. Over the past several years, researchers have developed rescoring procedures for the Personality Assessment Inventory that compute information on the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders-a hybrid dimensional-categorical model of personalit

Assessment of neurotransmitter-related structural brain changes in borderline personality disorder: an MRI study.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by grey matter (GM) alterations in areas related to emotion regulation, impulsivity and metacognitive abilities. Dysfunction of specific neurotransmitters, including serotoninergic and dopaminergic systems, is thought to be involved, but evidence is currently limited. In this exploratory study, we tested for associations between GM alterations in BPD, the spatial distribution of neurotransmitter systems, and clinical features in a sample of 58 patients with BPD and 28 healthy controls (HC). GM volume alterations were assessed on 3T MRI usi

Emerging Personality Pathology in Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Clinical Correlates and Assessment Implications.

The link between neurodevelopmental and psychiatric conditions is increasingly recognized in developmental psychiatry, yet the relationship between Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Personality Disorders (PDs) remains underexplored in adolescence. Dysfunctional personality traits (DPT) may emerge in individuals with ASD, especially when diagnosis is delayed and comorbidities occur. This study assessed 79 adolescents (mean age = 15.15 ± 1.50; 45.6% females) with ASD without intellectual disability using a multimodal protocol (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition [ADOS-2], Auti

Psychometric properties of the Japanese version of the standardised assessment of personality abbreviated scale.

This study was undertaken to translate the Standardised Assessment of Personality - Abbreviated Scale (SAPAS) into Japanese and to evaluate its validity and reliability. SAPAS is one of the most rapid tools for assessing personality disorder (PD) and has excellent sensitivity and good specificity, whereas other PD assessment tools require such a significant investment of time that they are infeasible for large surveys or routine clinical practice. Customary assessment in clinical practice ideally incorporates screening for PD, as it is associated with a substantial public health burden, includ
