Development of an integrated model of personality, personality disorders and severe axis I disorders, with special reference to major affective disorders.

A unidimensional model of the relationships between normal temperament, psychopathic variants of it and the two main forms of so-called endogenous psychoses (major affective disorders and schizophrenia) was derived from Kretschmer's constitutional typology. It was, however, not confirmed by means of a biometric approach nor was Kretschmer's broad concept of cyclothymia as a correlate of physical stoutness on the one hand and major affective disorders on the other supported by empirical data. Yet the concept of the 'melancholic type' of personality of patients with severe unipolar major depress

Common and Unique Etiological Influences on Personality and Personality Disorders in Youth.

BACKGROUND: Personality and personality disorders (PDs) are closely related constructs, but the nature of their relationship remains uncertain. Dimensional models suggest PDs are extreme manifestations of personality traits. We investigated the etiological links between broad personality factors and dimensional PD factors using quantitative analyses of common and unique genetic and environmental etiological factors affecting both normative and deviant personalities, emphasizing methods to minimize measurement bias. METHODS: Seven national twin cohorts participated (N = 2,353 twins from 1,188

Experiential avoidance in participants with borderline personality disorder and other personality disorders.

BACKGROUND: The present study has descriptive and predictive aims. The descriptive aims were to determine if participants with borderline personality disorder (BPD) reported higher levels of experiential avoidance (EA) than participants with other personality disorders (OPD) as well as determine if non-recovered participants with BPD reported higher levels of EA than participants with BPD who have recovered symptomatically and psychosocially. The predictive aim was to determine if the level of EA reported by participants with BPD was predicted by the severity of aspects of childhood or adult a

Beliefs in personality disorders: a test with the personality disorder belief questionnaire.

The hypothesis that each personality disorder (PD) is characterized by a specific set of beliefs was tested in a sample of 643 subjects, including non-patient controls, axis-I and axis-II patients, diagnosed with SCID-I and -II interviews. Beliefs of six PDs (avoidant, dependent, obsessive-compulsive, paranoid, histrionic, borderline) were assessed with the Personality Disorder Belief Questionnaire (PDBQ). Factor analyses supported the existence of six hypothesized sets of beliefs. Structural equation modeling (SEM) supported the hypothesis that each PD is characterized by a specific set of be

The relationship of histrionic personality disorder to antisocial personality and somatization disorders.

The authors examined the association of antisocial personality disorder, somatization disorder, and histrionic personality disorder, both within individuals and within families, in 250 patients. All three disorders overlapped considerably within individuals; the strongest relationship was between antisocial personality and histrionic personality. A high prevalence of antisocial personality was reported in the families of patients with somatization disorder but not in the families of patients with histrionic personality. The authors suggest that histrionic individuals develop antisocial persona

Bipolarity of maladaptive personality traits in the alternative model of personality disorders.

It has been posited that extremely high or extremely low levels of any personality trait in the five-factor model can be maladaptive. However, the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders in Section III of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-fifth edition (DSM-5) is composed almost exclusively of unipolar maladaptive traits. The lack of maladaptively low neuroticism and high extraversion fails to fully cover psychopathy; the lack of maladaptively high extraversion fails to cover histrionic personality disorder; the lack of maladaptively high agreeableness fails to cover

The Predictive Role of Personality Disorders and Personality Traits in Death Anxiety.

The current study investigates the interplay between personality traits, personality disorders, and death anxiety in a sample of 2331 participants (49% males; 51% females) across two phases. The Death Anxiety Scale, the Psychosocial Personality Inventory, and the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire were utilized. The findings revealed significant predictive relationships between personality disorders and death anxiety. Positive correlations were observed between death anxiety and nine personality disorders, including avoidant (r = .227), borderline (r = .123), dependent (r = .157), depressive

Relationship Between Big Five Personality Dimensions, Chronotype, and DSM-V Personality Disorders.

Morningness-eveningness (M/E) is an important variable in individual differences and has an impact on many areas of life including general and mental health. In previous work eveningness has shown to correlate to personality disorders (PDs) and mental instability such as psychoticism, depression, and bipolar disorders. Therefore, a relationship between M/E and PDs can be assumed but has never been tested. The aim of this study was to assess a possible relationship between DSM-5-PDs and circadian timing (chronotype; M/E). We used the Morningness-Eveningness Stability Scale improved and clock ti

[Gender differences in alcohol dependence: personality variables, psychopathological profile and personality disorders].

In this paper, gender differences in personality, psychopathology and personality disorders of alcohol-dependent patients are described. The sample consisted of 158 alcohol-dependent patients attending a psychiatric outpatient clinic (105 men and 55 women). All participants were assessed with various assessment tools related to personality (Impulsiveness Scale, Sensation Seeking Scale and STAI), psychopathology (SCL-90-R, BDI and Inadaptation Scale) and personality disorders (IPDE). There were no differences in personality variables, but the women had more anxiety and depressive symptoms and a

The typology of hypochondrical development of personality is presented on the basis of observation of 142 patients, 82 males and 60 females, mean age 45,7+/-3,8 years, with cardiac, dermatological and oncologic pathologies. 7 types of hypochondrical development of personality were singled out as paranoiac, aberrant type, overvalued, neurotic, masked hypochondria, "new life" type and hypochondrical dysthymia, and patterns of their formation were specified. The Co-occurrence of Personality Disorders and Substance Use Disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite significant negative outcomes, the co-occurrence of personality disorders (PDs) and substance use disorders (SUDs) continues to be underrecognized, and the mechanisms contributing to this co-occurrence remain unclear. This review summarizes recent work on PD-SUD co-occurrence, with a focus on borderline and antisocial PDs, general substance use patterns among those with PDs, and the association of personality traits with SUDs. RECENT FINDINGS: The prevalence of co-occurring PD-SUD is generally high, with estimates ranging depending on the type of PD and SUD, the pop

Comparison of childhood trauma between depressive disorders and personality disorders.

The relationship between childhood trauma with major depressive disorder (MDD) and personality disorders is complex. We explored the differences in the subjective reporting of childhood trauma to determine whether there were differences between those with a diagnosis of personality disorder and those with MDD. Adult patients with depressive symptoms were recruited from three adult psychiatry inpatient wards. Sixty inpatients fulfilled the study criteria and were requested to complete the childhood trauma questionnaire (CTQ). At discharge, diagnosis was determined and was allocated mainly to tw

Personality disorders and autism spectrum disorders: what are the connections?

BACKGROUND: The relationship between autism spectrum disorders/pervasive developmental disorders and personality disorders is not completely clear, although both concepts imply lifelong impairment. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the presence of possible personality disorders in a group of young adults with Asperger syndrome. METHOD: Fifty-four young adults with a clinical diagnosis of Asperger syndrome were assessed with Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II disorders to evaluate the presence of a concomitant personality disorder and completed the Autism Spectr

Patterns of personality disorders in women with chronic eating disorders.

The aim of this study was to describe patterns of personality disorders (PDs) in women with chronic eating disorders (EDs). An index group of nineteen women who have had EDs for an average of 8.5 years was compared with a control group of same-aged women from the general population. At the time of the study the index group received treatment at a tertiary treatment center in Stockholm. The PDs were assessed using the DSM-IV part of the DSM-IV and ICD-10 Personality Questionnaire (DIP-Q). In the index group, eighteen of nineteen fulfilled the criteria for one or more PD. The number of PD diagno

Recent research of relationships among eating disorders and personality disorders.

This review focuses on recent research examining the relationships among eating disorders (ED) and personality disorders (PD). Studies that have examined rates of PD in patients with ED and rates of ED in patients with PD have generally reported high rates of diagnostic co-occurrence, although the marked inconsistency and variability in rates across studies is striking. Methodologic limitations and conceptual problems make interpretation of the existing literature ambiguous. Overall, circumspect review suggests that anorexia nervosa may be associated with obsessional and perfectionistic forms

[Personality disorders in patients with eating disorders: a controlled study].

A group of 24 eating-disordered female subjects (10 anorexia nervosa--AN--and 14 bulimia nervosa--BN--patients) were interviewed, using a semistructured interview for DSM-III-R Axis-II Personality Disorders (SCID-II). A group of 54 subjects without eating disorder acted as a control group. A high rate of personality disorder (PD) diagnoses occurred in eating disordered subjects (AN and BN patients), with a high prevalence of borderline, dependent, and self-defeating PD. Avoidant and obsessive-compulsive PD were more common in AN patients, whereas BN was associated with histrionic PD. Findings

Comorbidity of DSM-III-R eating disorders and personality disorders.

The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship of eating disorders to personality disorders. Two hundred subjects were independently administered the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R (SCID) and the Personality Disorder Examination (PDE) face-to-face by two experienced clinicians. One hundred forty-six also completed the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-Revised (PDQ-R). Rates of personality disorder among patients with and without eating disorders were determined by each of the three instruments. Mental Health and Personality Disorders: Acute and Posttraumatic Stress Disorders.

Acute stress disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are debilitating psychiatric conditions that may occur following traumatic events or severe stressors. Generally, these two conditions have similar diagnostic criteria, with acute stress disorder marked by symptoms for less than 1 month and PTSD with symptoms lasting 1 month or more. The exact mechanism by which PTSD develops in the brain is not known. Groups at risk for developing PTSD include women, people with low socioeconomic status, previously married people, and people younger than 65 years. Symptoms must include exposure to

The prevalence of personality disorders among those with eating disorders.

The genuine prevalence of personality disorders among those with eating disorders is unknown. However, in this paper, we summarize the existing data, with careful acknowledgment of our approach to interpretation as well as the limitations of previous studies. Our findings indicate that obsessive-compulsive personality is the most common personality disorder in restricting-type anorexia nervosa, while borderline personality is the most common personality disorder in binge-eating/purging type anorexia nervosa. Borderline personality is the most common personality disorder in bulimia nervosa, as
