Exposure to Crude Oil Induces Retinal Apoptosis and Impairs Visual Function in Fish.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) present in crude oil are known to impair visual development in fish. However, the underlying mechanism of PAH-induced toxicity to the visual system of fish is not understood. Embryonic zebrafish (Danio rerio) at 4 h post fertilization were exposed to weathered crude oil and assessed for visual function using an optokinetic response, with subsequent samples taken for immunohistochemistry and gene expression analysis. Cardiotoxicity was also assessed by measuring the heart rate, stroke volume, and cardiac output, as cardiac performance has been proposed to

Effects of crude oil vapors on the cardiovascular flow of embryonic Gulf killifish.

Direct contact with toxicants in crude oil during embryogenesis causes cardiovascular defects, but the effects of exposure to airborne volatile organic compounds released from spilled oil are not well understood. The effects of crude oil-derived airborne toxicants on peripheral blood flow were examined in Gulf killifish (Fundulus grandis) since this model completes embryogenesis in the air. Particle image velocimetry was used to measure in vivo blood flow in intersegmental arteries of control and oil-exposed embryos. Significant effects in oil-exposed embryos included increased pulse rate, red

Flared gases and other pollutants associated with air quality in industrial areas of Nigeria: an overview.

Nigeria, like any other developing nation, is faced with the twin problem of development without destruction. Industrialization, though an important component of development, has had a large share in the despoilation of air quality in the country by the release of high amounts of pollutants into the atmosphere. Petroleum hydrocarbons from refineries, flared gases, dusts, and fumes of metal-smelting and cement works, odorous gases of chemical and allied industries, carbon monoxide and oxides of sulfur and nitrogen of internal combustion engines, the charred particulates and sulfur dioxide emiss

Simultaneous petroleum hydrocarbon degradation and nitrogen removal by Acinetobacter sp. XF-5: Degradation mechanisms and temporal metabolic reprogramming.

Acinetobacter species capable of simultaneous total petroleum hydrocarbon degradation and heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification hold great promise for shale oil fracturing flowback fluid bioremediation. Nevertheless, metabolic regulation governing such coupled pollutant removal and enzyme-hydrocarbon multi-scale coupling mechanisms remain largely elusive. This study characterized the pollutant degradation performance and actual wastewater adaptability of Acinetobacter sp. XF-5, and explored core mechanisms underlying simultaneous total petroleum hydrocarbon degradation and effici

Mono-oxygenase activities of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) liver microsomes using three polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon substrates.

1. Benzo[a]pyrene, 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene, and naphthalene were used as substrates for a coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) liver microsomal preparation. 2. The apparent Michaelis constants (Km) were as follows: benzo[a]pyrene, 2.1 microM; 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene, 15.3 microM; and naphthalene, 300 microM. 3. The results indicate that the microsomal preparation had a high affinity for 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene. Thus, 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene, an important constituent of petroleum products, is a useful substrate for research on the disposition in vivo and in vitro of xenobiotics introduced into ma

Comprehensive assessment of the Kerch Strait marine and coastal bottom sediments pollution after an accidental fuel oil spill (December 2024).

The study investigates the spatial distribution of geochemical characteristics and accumulation of pollutants in the surface layer of coastal and marine sediments of the Kerch Strait and in its pre-strait zone after the tanker accident in December 2024. Coastal sediments consisted primarily of shell and gravel material with an organic matter content ranging from 0.6% to 3.0%; pollutant concentrations were low, corresponding to pollution level I (<500 mg/kg). The organic matter content in the marine sediments ranged from 0.8% to 8.5%, falling within the natural range of organic matter levels ob

The capture of crude oil droplets by filter feeders at high and low Reynolds numbers.

Crustacean filter feeders capture oil droplets with the use of their ramified appendages. These appendages behave as paddles or sieves, based on the system's Reynolds number. Here, we used high-speed videography, scanning electron microscopy and fluid mechanics to study the capturing mechanisms of crude oil droplets and the filtering appendage's wettability by two species of barnacles (Balanus glandula and Balanus crenatus) and of the freshwater cladoceran Daphnia magna. Our results show that barnacle appendages behave as paddles and capture droplets in their boundary layers at low Reynolds nu

Embryotoxicity and Physiological Compensation in Chicken Embryos Exposed to Crude Oil.

Terrestrial, marine, or aquatic oil spills can directly or indirectly contaminate bird eggs. We hypothesized that chicken embryos exposed to crude oil can physiologically compensate to mitigate the potentially toxic effect of lower doses of oil. Embryos exposed to 0, 1, 3, or 5 µL of oil on embryonic days 4 and 10 were initially analyzed for mortality. All oil doses decreased day 4 embryo survival, but only the 2 highest oil doses lowered survival when applied on day 10. Thus, day 15 embryos treated with 1, 3, and 5 µL of source oil on day 10 had arterialized blood analyzed. The hematological

n-Alkane Gradients Reshape Soil Microbial Networks and Functions at Petroleum Refinery Sites.

Petroleum refining activities exert substantial contamination pressure on soil ecosystems, yet the corresponding microbial response mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. This study integrates source apportionment, high-throughput sequencing and co-occurrence network analysis to elucidate microbial adaptations along a petroleum exposure gradient. Source analysis confirmed that all soils were predominantly influenced by petroleum-derived inputs, with hydrocarbon concentrations increasing significantly across gradients. Under contamination levels of 422.35-621.21 mg/kg, petroleum pollution

Assessment of chemical loadings to Newark Bay, New Jersey from petroleum and hazardous chemical accidents occurring from 1986 to 1991.

Newark Bay, New Jersey, is particularly vulnerable to ecological damage from accidental petroleum and chemical spills due to the enclosed nature of the bay and the large volume of chemical and petroleum commerce within the region. A review of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and Energy's database of hazardous chemical spills in New Jersey waterways was conducted to determine the frequency and volume of chemical and petroleum spills in Newark Bay and its major tributaries. Accidents reported from 1986 to 1991 were extracted from the database and summarized. The compilation

Biogeochemical stratification governs microbial hydrocarbon degradation potential in a petrochemical contaminated site.

The success of in situ bioremediation at petrochemical-contaminated sites (defined as those impacted by petrochemical production or accidental release) depends on the structure and functional capacities of indigenous microbial communities, as well as the physicochemical gradients that shape their metabolic potential. While microbial degradation mechanisms are well-documented in homogeneous environments, systematic evaluations of microbial dynamics across environmental compartments (e.g., surface/middle/deep soil vs. groundwater) remain scarce. In this study, we combined chemical profiling with

Assessment of atmospheric volatile organic compounds at two crude oil production plants in Southeastern Türkiye.

Ambient Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) were investigated to determine their characteristics, Ozone Formation Potentials (OFPs), and health risks in two crude oil production plants (Nusaybin and Egil plants) in southeastern Türkiye. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m + p xylene, o xylene, and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene were measured at eight passive sampling points in each plant. Samples were analyzed using gas chromatography coupled with a flame ionization detector and a thermal desorption. The concentration of ∑ 6 VOC ranged from 5.03 to 88.43 μg/m3 in the Nusaybin Plant and from 7.70 to 154.

Untangling mechanisms of crude oil toxicity: Linking gene expression, morphology and PAHs at two developmental stages in a cold-water fish.

Early life stages of fish are highly sensitive to crude oil exposure and thus, short term exposures during critical developmental periods could have detrimental consequences for juvenile survival. Here we administered crude oil to Atlantic haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) in short term (3-day) exposures at two developmental time periods: before first heartbeat, from gastrulation to cardiac cone stage (early), and from first heartbeat to one day before hatching (late). A frequent sampling regime enabled us to determine immediate PAH uptake, metabolite formation and gene expression changes. In

Characterization of chemical fingerprints of unconventional Bakken crude oil.

The ability to characterize the composition of emerging unconventional Bakken tight oil is essential to better prepare for potential spills and to assess associated environmental concerns. The present work measured and compared the physical and chemical properties of Bakken crudes with conventional crude oils from various regions and different types of refined petroleum products. The physicochemical properties of Bakken crude are overall similar to those of conventional light crudes. The Bakken crude consists of high concentrations of monoaromatic hydrocarbons and alkylated PAHs with a clear d

Modeling filtration of dispersed crude oil droplets by the copepod Calanus finmarchicus.

Oil droplets may form and disperse in the water column after an accidental spill of crude oil or petroleum products at sea. Micro-sized oil droplets may be available for filter feeding organisms, such as the copepod Calanus finmarchicus, which has been shown to filter oil droplets. In the present paper, a modeling approach was used to estimate potential ingestion amounts by copepod filtration of oil droplets. The new model was implemented in the OSCAR (Oil Spill Contingency and Response) software suite, and tested for a series of oil spill scenarios and key parameters. Among these, the size of

The fate and behavior of petroleum biomarkers in diluted bitumen and conventional crude oil exposed to natural sunlight in simulated seawater.

Given that the physicochemical properties of diluted bitumen (dilbit) can differ from those of conventional crude oil, understanding the fate and behavior of this petroleum product in the environment becomes vital. This study involves the analysis of the photolytic behavior of some representative petroleum biomarkers, bicyclic sesquiterpanes (BSs), admantanes (ADs), diamantanes (DAs), and mono- and triaromatic steranes (MASs and TASs), by exposing Cold Lake Blend (CLB) and Alberta Sweet Mixed Blend (MSW) to winter and summer insolation after being spilled onto artificial brines.
