Optical emission-based phantom to verify coincidence of radiotherapy and imaging isocenters on an MR-linac.

PURPOSE: Demonstrate a novel phantom design using a remote camera imaging method capable of concurrently measuring the position of the x-ray isocenter and the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) isocenter on an MR-linac. METHODS: A conical frustum with distinct geometric features was machined out of plastic. The phantom was submerged in a small water tank, and aligned using room lasers on a MRIdian MR-linac (ViewRay Inc., Cleveland, OH). The phantom physical isocenter was visualized in the MR images and related to the DICOM coordinate isocenter. To view the x-ray isocenter, an intensified CMOS c

Rapid-scan EPR imaging of a phantom comprised of species with different linewidths and relaxation times.

As a demonstration of the application of rapid-scan EPR to imaging at low frequency and magnetic field, a multi-compartment phantom containing six different samples was imaged. The samples were nitroxide radicals, trityl (substituted triarylmethyl) radicals, and the oxygen-sensitive solid lithium phthalocyanine (LiPc), all of which are useful for in vivo imaging. The 2D spectral-spatial image demonstration was performed at 250 MHz, with samples in sealed tubes of various sizes arranged in a 3D-printed plastic holder. Maximum gradients of 10 G/cm gave a spatial resolution of about 0.1 mm for th

Feasibility of stereotactic MRI-based image guidance for the treatment of vascular malformations: a phantom study.

PURPOSE: Treatment of vascular malformations requires the placement of a needle within vessels which may be as small as 1 mm, with the current state of the art relying exclusively on two-dimensional fluoroscopy images for guidance. We hypothesize that the combination of stereotactic image guidance with existing targeting methods will result in faster and more reproducible needle placements, as well as reduced radiationexposure, when compared to standard methods based on fluoroscopy alone. METHODS: The proposed navigation approach was evaluated in a phantom experiment designed to allow direct

Phantom based evaluation of CT to CBCT image registration for proton therapy dose recalculation.

The ability to perform dose recalculation on the anatomy of the day is important in the context of adaptive proton therapy. The objective of this study was to investigate the use of deformable image registration (DIR) and cone beam CT (CBCT) imaging to generate the daily stopping power distribution of the patient. We investigated the deformation of the planning CT scan (pCT) onto daily CBCT images to generate a virtual CT (vCT) using a deformable phantom designed for the head and neck (H & N) region. The phantom was imaged at a planning CT scanner in planning configuration, yielding a pCT and

Influence of monitor display resolution and displayed image size on the spatial resolution of ultra-high-resolution CT images: a phantom study.

To determine the optimal display conditions for ultra-high-resolution computed tomography (UHRCT) images in clinical practice, this study investigated the effects of liquid-crystal display (LCD) resolution and displayed image size on the spatial resolution of phantom images acquired using a UHRCT system. A phantom designed to evaluate the high-contrast resolution was scanned. The scan data were reconstructed into four types of UHRCT image series consisting of the following possible combinations: two types of reconstruction kernels on the filtered back-projection method (for the lung and medias

Iodine and bismuth dual-contrast imaging on photon-counting CT with noise-optimized virtual monoenergetic imaging: Phantom and patient studies.

BACKGROUND: Dual-contrast imaging of iodine and bismuth has shown promise in previous phantom and animal studies utilizing spectral CT. However, these studies often employed Pepto-Bismol containing bismuth subsalicylate with dosages exceeding the recommended limits for human consumption, limiting their clinical applicability. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to improve iodine-bismuth dual-contrast imaging on a clinical photon-counting CT (PCCT) system using a noise-optimized virtual monoenergetic imaging (VMI) approach. METHODS: Four bismuth samples (0.6, 1.3, 2.5, and 5.1 mg/mL) and t

An open-source CT texture phantom for radiomic imaging studies: Design, manufacture, and initial evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The lack of standardized, reproducible, and publicly available reference objects limits the interpretability and reproducibility of radiomic imaging studies across institutions. Current handcrafted phantoms lack the precision, reproducibility, and accessibility required for large-scale, multi-center validation studies. PURPOSE: This work presents the design, manufacture, and initial evaluation of an open-source modular CT texture phantom intended as a reproducible, accessible platform for quantitative imaging research. METHODS: A modular phantom system was designed comprising an

Impact of CT parameter reduction on quantitative SPECT/CT assessment in 99mTc imaging: A phantom study.

INTRODUCTION: Quantitative SPECT/CT provides objective assessment of radiotracer distribution but may be influenced by CT acquisition parameters used for attenuation correction and by object related factors such as the partial volume effect. Optimization of CT protocols is therefore important to reduce radiation exposure while maintaining quantitative reliability. METHODS: A study evaluated the effect of CT acquisition parameters on quantitative SPECT/CT measurements. A NEMA IEC Body phantom containing six spheres (10-37 mm) with a target to background activity ratio of 10:1 was scanned using

Interference of cardiac implantable electronic devices and computed tomography imaging in the current era with a phantom model.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac implantable electronic devices are used in patients with cardiac rhythm disorders. Computed tomography irradiation is not prohibited for patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices, despite adverse events being reported. Hence, appropriate preparation and knowledge are required before computed tomography irradiation can be carried out in these patients. Since there is limited knowledge or literature about the influence of computed tomography irradiation in cases with recent cardiac implantable electronic devices, we aimed to evaluate the adverse events and elucid

Realistic head-shaped phantom with brain-mimicking metabolites for 7 T spectroscopy and spectroscopic imaging.

PURPOSE: Moving to ultra-high fields (≥7 T), the inhomogeneity of both RF (B1 ) and static (B0 ) magnetic fields increases, which further motivates us to design a realistic head-shaped phantom, especially for spectroscopic imaging. Such phantoms provide images similar to the human brain and serve as a reliable tool for developing and examining methods in MRI. This study aims to develop and characterize a realistic head-shaped phantom filled with brain-mimicking metabolites for MRS and magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging in a 7 T MRI scanner. METHODS: A 3D head-shaped container with three

Patient-based 4D digital breast phantom for perfusion contrast-enhanced breast CT imaging.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop a realistic patient-based 4D digital breast phantom including time-varying contrast enhancement for simulation of dedicated breast CT perfusion imaging. METHODS: A 3D static phantom is first created by segmenting a breast CT image from a healthy patient into skin, fibroglandular tissue, adipose tissue, and vasculature. For the creation of abnormal cases, a breast lesion model was developed and can be added to the phantom. After defining the necessary perfusion parameters for each tissue (e.g., arterial input function for vasculature, blood vol

A Rotatable Quality Control Phantom for Evaluating the Performance of Flat Panel Detectors in Imaging Moving Objects.

As the use of diagnostic X-ray equipment with flat panel detectors (FPDs) has increased, so has the importance of proper management of FPD systems. To ensure quality control (QC) of FPD system, an easy method for evaluating FPD imaging performance for both stationary and moving objects is required. Until now, simple rotatable QC phantoms have not been available for the easy evaluation of the performance (spatial resolution and dynamic range) of FPD in imaging moving objects. We developed a QC phantom for this purpose. It consists of three thicknesses of copper and a rotatable test pattern of p

Toward computer-assisted image-guided congenital heart defect repair: an initial phantom analysis.

PURPOSE: Radiation exposure in interventional cardiology is an important consideration, due to risk of cancer and other morbidity to the patient and clinical staff. Cardiac catheterizations rely heavily on fluoroscopic imaging exposing both patient and clinician to ionizing radiation. An image-guided surgery system capable of facilitating cardiac catheterizations was developed and tested to evaluate dose reduction. METHODS: Several electromagnetically tracked tools were constructed specifically a 7-Fr catheter with five 5-degree-of-freedom magnetic seeds. Catheter guidance was accomplished us

Real-time phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging for assessment of haemodynamics: from phantom to patients.

OBJECTIVES: Assessment of haemodynamics is crucial in many cardiac diseases. Phase contrast MRI (PC-MRI) can accurately access it. Arrhythmia is a major limitation in conventional segmented PC-MRI (SEG). A real-time PC-MRI sequence (RT) could overcome this. We validated RT by comparing to SEG. METHODS: A prototype RT using shared velocity encoding was tested against SEG at 1.5 T in a flow phantom and consecutively included patients with (n = 55) or without (n = 59) aortic valve disease. In patients with atrial fibrillation (Afib, n = 15), only RT was applied. Phantom: PC images were acquired

[Development of a tissue-equivalent magnetic resonance imaging phantom using indigestible dextrin and soluble calcium].

In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the ideal phantom should have similar T1 and T2 values to those of organs of interest for measuring the change in signal intensity, contrast ratio and contrast noise ratio. There have been several reports to develop such a phantom using materials with limited availability or complex methods. In this study, we have developed a simple phantom using indigestible dextrin and soluble calcium at 1.5-tesla MRI. The T1 and T2 values have been reduced by dissolving indigestible dextrin and soluble calcium in distilled water. The similar T1 and T2 values to those of

Deep learning "super resolution" versus iterative reconstruction: Phantom-based image quality assessment.

BACKGROUND: Deep learning reconstruction (DLR) algorithms have begun replacing iterative reconstruction (IR) in CT. Besides the potential to reduce noise, the application of artificial intelligence can also allow for "super resolution," allowing traditional CT systems to produce images with improved spatial resolution by training against higher-resolution images. This study aims to characterize the image quality produced by a DLR "super resolution" algorithm. PURPOSE: This study compares Canon's Precise IQ Engine (PIQE) Cardiac, a DLR algorithm, with the AIDR Enhanced 3D iterative reconstruct
