Significant variation in air quality in South Indian cities during COVID-19 lockdown and unlock phases.

With the spread of COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, the Government of India had imposed lockdown in the month of March 2020 to curb the spread of the virus furthermore. This shutdown led to closure of various institutions, organizations, and industries, and restriction on public movement was also inflicted which paved way to better air quality due to reduction in various industrial and vehicular emissions. To brace this, the present study was carried out to statistically analyze the changes in air quality from pre-lockdown period to unlock 6.0 in South Indian cities, namely, Bangalore, Chennai, Co

Comparison of phase rectified signal averaging and short term variation in predicting perinatal outcome in early onset fetal growth restriction.

OBJECTIVES: To compare short term variation (STV) and phase rectified signal averaging (PRSA) and their association with fetal outcome in early onset fetal growth restriction (FGR). METHODS: Data were used from a retrospective cohort study of women who were admitted for FGR and/or pre-eclampsia and who were delivered by pre-labor Cesarean section or had a fetal death before 32 weeks' gestation. Computerized cardiotocography (cCTG) registrations of the 5 days before delivery or fetal death were used for calculation of STV and PRSA. PRSA was expressed as the average acceleration capacity (AAC)

Utility of uncalibrated femoral stroke volume variation as a predictor of fluid responsiveness during the anhepatic phase of liver transplantation.

We evaluated the value of the stroke volume variation (SVV) calculated with the Vigileo monitor, which recently has been increasingly advocated for fluid management, as a predictor of fluid responsiveness during the anhepatic phase of liver transplantation (LT). We also compared SVV to the central venous pressure (CVP) and pulmonary arterial occlusion pressure (PAOP) in patients. Thirty-three adult recipients scheduled for elective living donor LT were enrolled in this study. Twenty minutes after the start of the anhepatic phase, the CVP, PAOP, approximate inferior vena caval pressure, femoral

Phase variation in the glycosyltransferase genes of Pasteurella multocida associated with outbreaks of fowl cholera on free-range layer farms.

Fowl cholera caused by Pasteurella multocida has re-emerged in Australian poultry production since the increasing adoption of free-range production systems. Currently, autogenous killed whole-cell vaccines prepared from the isolates previously obtained from each farm are the main preventative measures used. In this study, we use whole-genome sequencing and phylogenomic analysis to investigate outbreak dynamics, as well as monitoring and comparing the variations in the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) outer core biosynthesis loci of the outbreak and vaccine strains. In total, 73 isolates from two diffe

Genomic Evolution and Variation of SARS-CoV-2 in the Early Phase of COVID-19 Pandemic in Guangdong Province, China.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) with unknown origin spread rapidly to 222 countries, areas or territories. To investigate the genomic evolution and variation in the early phase of COVID-19 pandemic in Guangdong, 60 specimens of SARS-CoV-2 were used to perform whole genome sequencing, and genomics, amino acid variation and Spike protein structure modeling analyses. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that the early variation in the SARS-CoV-2 genome was still intra-species, with no evolution to other coronaviruses. There were one to seven nucleotide variations (SNVs) in

Behavioral variation across multiple phases of intravenous cocaine self-administration among genetically diverse mouse populations.

Genetic and other predisposing factors can influence the progression from initiation of drug intake to compulsive substance use through distinct biobehavioral processes. Operant cocaine self-administration studies in laboratory mice offer a powerful method to dissect the biology of this progression from initiation, dose-response, extinction, and cued reinstatement in a controlled, tractable system. However, many such studies encompass limited genetic diversity and rarely examine self-administration behaviors beyond the acquisition stage. Here, we study three high-diversity mouse populations -

Reproduction phase-related variations in the GnRH immunoreactive fibers in the pineal of the Indian major carp Cirrhinus mrigala (Ham.).

We studied GnRH immunoreactivity in the pineal gland of the Indian major carp Cirrhinus mrigala during different phases of reproductive cycle. In the resting phase (December-January), GnRH immunoreactive (-ir) fibers were organized as paired fascicles above the posterior commissure that ascend in the stalk and distribute widely in the pineal gland. The GnRH-ir fiber density significantly declined (P<0.001) during the preparatory phase (February-April) and the fibers disappeared thereafter. While no GnRH fibers were seen during the prespawning (May-June) and spawning (July-August), isolated GnR

Phase variation of manganese oxide in the MnO@ZnO nanocomposite with calcination temperature and its effect on structural and biological activities.

Having powerful antibacterial and antioxidant effects, zinc oxide and manganese oxide nanomaterials are of great interest. Here we have synthesized manganese oxide decorated zinc oxide (MZO) nanocomposites by co-precipitation method, calcined at different temperatures (300-750 °C) and studied various properties. Here the crystalline structure of the nanocomposite and phase change of the manganese oxide are observed with calcination temperature. The average crystalline size increases and the dislocation density and microstrain decrease with the increase in calcined temperature for the same stru

Morphophysiological variations of the female reproductive organs of the vespertilionid bat Myotis nigricans during its different reproductive phases.

Myotis nigricans is an important species of insectivorous bat from the Vespertilionidae family, which is endemic of the Neotropics. Despite its wide distribution, no detailed study of the reproduction is found for this species. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate and characterize morphological and morphometric variations of the female reproductive organs of M. nigricans during its different reproductive phases. Twenty adult females were collected, divided into four (4) sample groups, according to the reproductive status (nonreproductive, initial and advanced pregnancy and lactat

The classification of anatomic variations in the perigastric vessels by dual-phase CT to reduce intraoperative bleeding during laparoscopic gastrectomy.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy (LADG) is a less invasive alternative compared with an open procedure. However, it is difficult to obtain a full-view image and to estimate the three-dimensional (3D) relationships between organs during laparoscopic procedures. Determining the vascular anatomy by 3D CT imaging has been shown to play a critical role in reducing the risks associated with laparoscopic gastric cancer surgery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical anatomic variations and to estimate its positive contribution in obtaining less intraoperative bleedi

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor plasma variation during the different phases of the menstrual cycle in women with premenstrual syndrome.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is characterized by a cluster of psychological and somatic symptoms that begin during the late luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and disappear after the onset of menses. Since PMS might be caused by an alteration in the cyclical hormonal modifications and ovarian steroids are directly involved in the regulation of mood, affective and cognitive functions and influence neurotrophins expression, in particular the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), we aimed to evaluate whether plasma BDNF levels in women with PMS differ from those of normally menstruating women

Phase variation of lic1A, lic2A and lic3A in colonization of the nasopharynx, bloodstream and cerebrospinal fluid by Haemophilus influenzae type b.

The role of phase variation of lic1A, lic2A and lic3A in the ability of Haemophilus influenzae type b to colonize the nasopharynx, bloodstream and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of infants was investigated. This was achieved by using PCR to determine the number of 5'-CAAT-3' repeats present in each gene, which is indicative of whether each ORF can be expressed. Multiple PCR products of different intensities were amplified from all three genes at each site sampled. This indicated that the nasopharynx, bloodstream and CSF were colonized by a heterogeneous population of organisms, expressing different

The distribution and 'in vivo' phase variation status of haemoglobin receptors in invasive meningococcal serogroup B disease: genotypic and phenotypic analysis.

Two haemoglobin-binding proteins, HmbR and HpuAB, contribute to iron acquisition by Neisseria meningitidis. These receptors are subject to high frequency, reversible switches in gene expression--phase variation (PV)--due to mutations in homopolymeric (poly-G) repeats present in the open reading frame. The distribution and PV state of these receptors was assessed for a representative collection of isolates from invasive meningococcal disease patients of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Most of the major clonal complexes had only the HmbR receptor whilst the recently expanding ST-275-centred

The transposon-like Correia elements encode numerous strong promoters and provide a potential new mechanism for phase variation in the meningococcus.

Neisseria meningitidis is the primary causative agent of bacterial meningitis. The genome is rich in repetitive DNA and almost 2% is occupied by a diminutive transposon called the Correia element. Here we report a bioinformatic analysis defining eight subtypes of the element with four distinct types of ends. Transcriptional analysis, using PCR and a lacZ reporter system, revealed that two ends in particular encode strong promoters. The activity of the strongest promoter is dictated by a recurrent polymorphism (Y128) at the right end of the element. We highlight examples of elements that appear

State-dependent facial pulsation asymmetry and phase asynchrony measured by imaging photoplethysmography and their coupling with contingent negative variation in migraine.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize imaging photoplethysmography (iPPG)-derived facial hemodynamic alterations across migraine states and examine their association with contingent negative variation (CNV), an electroencephalography-derived marker of anticipatory cortical activity. METHODS: We enrolled 78 patients with migraine, including 60 assessed during the interictal phase (IP) and 18 assessed during the migraine attack phase (MAP), together with 72 healthy controls (HC). Short facial videos were analyzed across three facial angiosomes: the lateral forehead, mid-forehead, and cheek. Two peripheral

Pre-pandemic contraction, phase-specific rate variation, and site-specific antigenic adaptation shape influenza A(H3N2) evolutionary dynamics in Hubei, China.

Influenza A(H3N2) is a contributor to seasonal epidemics, yet its evolution during and after the COVID-19 pandemic is not fully understood. We analyzed surveillance data and hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) sequences from Hubei, China, 2017-2024. The epidemic followed regular seasonality before 2020, nearly disappeared during 2020-2022, and resurged with strong peaks after mid-2022. Multiple HA lineages co-circulated pre-pandemic. Several localized reassortment signals were observed before the pandemic, though overall evidence for intra-subtype reassortment remained limited. After res

Potentiation of Phase Variation in Multiple Outer-Membrane Proteins During Spread of the Hyperinvasive Neisseria meningitidis Serogroup W ST-11 Lineage.

BACKGROUND: Since 2009, increases in the incidence of invasive meningococcal disease have occurred in the United Kingdom due to a sublineage of the Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W ST-11 clonal complex (hereafter, the "original UK strain"). In 2013, a descendent substrain (hereafter, the "2013 strain") became the dominant disease-causing variant. Multiple outer-membrane proteins of meningococci are subject to phase-variable switches in expression due to hypermutable simple-sequence repeats. We investigated whether alterations in phase-variable genes may have influenced the relative prevalenc
