Effects of phenanthrene- and metal-contaminated sediment on the feeding activity of the Harpacticoid Copepod, Schizopera knabeni.

The effects of sediments contaminated with sublethal concentrations of phenanthrene (PAH) and metals (Cd, Hg, Pb) were evaluated in relation to their influence on the feeding activity of a harpacticoid copepod, Schizopera knabeni. A metal mixture (at the ratio of 5Pb:3Cd:2Hg) and Cd alone reduced grazing rates of S. knabeni feeding on (14)C-labeled microalgae. Cadmium alone and Cd combined with phenanthrene significantly decreased grazing rates of S. knabeni at Cd concentrations above 49 mg kg(-1) dry sediment. No grazing was observed in 98, 106, or 157 mg kg(-1) dry sediment Cd alone or in se

Humic acid modified biochar enhances the degradation of phenanthrene by Proteus sp. GH-2.

Phenanthrene is a typical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)pollutant which long-term persistence poses significant hazards to both the environment and human health. The utilisation of microorganisms has been demonstrated to facilitate the effective and environmentally sustainable elimination of PAHs. In this study, a phenanthrene-degrading bacterium, Proteus sp. GH-2, was isolated and identified. To elucidate the degradation mechanism of GH-2 for phenanthrene, we conducted intermediate product analysis using HPLC-MS, revealing that GH-2 degrades phenanthrene via the phthalic acid pathway.

New insights into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: Phenanthrene targets ribosomes to induce neuronal apoptosis.

The environmental pollutant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are abundant in the environment due to large-scale industrial production and can induce toxic effects in multiple systems. Phenanthrene (Phe) is the major PAHs in environmental sources. However, it remains unknown whether Phe exposure induced brain injury in zebrafish was related to ribotoxic stress, apoptosis and energy metabolism. In this study, 100 zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to Phe in the water environment at environmental relevant concentrations for 28 days. By deploying molecular dynamics simulations, RNA sequen

Skin-Protective Activities of Dioscorea batatas Decne Peel Extracts with Differential Phenanthrene Contents.

Background/Objectives: Dioscorea batatas Decne (yam), which contains various bioactive compounds, has been utilized in the cosmetics industry, while most of the peel of D. batatas (DBP) is discarded without further use. Recent studies have shown that DBP contains higher levels of bioactive substances than the rhizome flesh. The aim of this study was to evaluate the skin biological activities of DBP extracts obtained using 70% ethanol (70% EtOH DBP), 95% ethanol (95% EtOH DBP), and ethyl acetate (EA DBP), with particular attention to their antioxidant-associated protective effects. Methods: Ski

Phenanthrene disrupts calcium transients and inhibits INCX in zebrafish (Danio rerio) ventricular myocytes.

Phenanthrene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) that is derived from fossil fuels and is present in most PAH mixtures found in water, air and soil. It has been shown to affect cardiac function of vertebrates, including fish. We investigated the effects of phenanthrene on intracellular calcium transient ([Ca2+]i) and the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger (NCX) current (INCX) in zebrafish (Danio rerio) ventricular cardiomyocytes using Fluo-4 AM imaging and whole-cell patch-clamp, respectively. Phenanthrene exposure (25 µM) reduced the amplitude and slowed the rate of decay of Ca²⁺ transients. Phenanthr

Gestational Exposure to Phenanthrene Induces Superfluous Fibrosis and Calcification and Metabolic Imbalance of the Placenta in Mice.

The placenta is a vital organ that facilitates maternal-fetal circulation, ensuring proper fetal development. Phenanthrene (Phe), a typical low-molecular-weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, is widely present in the environment and food. In this study, pregnant mice were exposed to Phe (0, 0.6, 6, and 60 μg/kg of body weight) via gavage every 3 days from pregnancy day 0.5 (PGD 0.5) for a total of six exposures during pregnancy. Placentas were collected on PGD of 18.5 for analysis. The results showed that Phe exposure altered placental structure and function, inducing trophoblast thickening

Immunomodulatory activity of isolated phenanthrene and dihydrophenanthrene derivatives (coelotrinins A-L) from Coelogyne trinervis.

Twelve previously undescribed compounds, named coelotrinins A-L (1-12), comprising eight dihydrophenanthrene derivatives (1, 4-5, and 7-11), two phenanthrene derivatives (2-3), and two phenanthrene-dihydrophenanthrene derivatives (6 and 12), along with twenty-one known compounds (13-33), were isolated from the pseudobulbs of Coelogyne trinervis. The structures were elucidated via spectroscopic data analysis, and their configurations were determined by optical rotation values and by comparing experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism curves. Among these compounds, four compounds

Gestational exposure to phenanthrene induces follicular atresia and endocrine dyscrasia in F1 adult female.

Epidemiological investigations and animal studies demonstrate a significantly positive relationship between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposure and reproductive disorders. However, few researches are focused on the reproductive toxicity of low-molecular-weight PAHs (number of benzene ring ≤ 3) which occupy a large part of PAHs. Phenanthrene (Phe), a typical low-molecular-weight PAH, is one of the most abundant PAHs detected in foods. In the present study, oral treatment with Phe at a human exposure related level during gestation (60 μg/kg body weight every three days, six times in

Isolation and Characterization of Phenanthrene Degrading Bacteria from Diesel Fuel-Contaminated Antarctic Soils.

Antarctica is an attractive target for human exploration and scientific investigation, however the negative effects of human activity on this continent are long lasting and can have serious consequences on the native ecosystem. Various areas of Antarctica have been contaminated with diesel fuel, which contains harmful compounds such as heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Bioremediation of PAHs by the activity of microorganisms is an ecological, economical, and safe decontamination approach. Since the introduction of foreign organisms into the Antarctica is prohibited, it i

The variability of standard artificial soils: cadmium and phenanthrene sorption measured by a batch equilibrium method.

Artificial soil (AS) is used in soil ecotoxicology as a test medium or reference matrix. AS is prepared according to standard OECD/ISO protocols and components of local sources are usually used by laboratories. This may result in significant inter-laboratory variations in AS properties and, consequently, in the fate and bioavailability of tested chemicals. In order to reveal the extent and sources of variations, the batch equilibrium method was applied to measure the sorption of 2 model compounds (phenanthrene and cadmium) to 21 artificial soils from different laboratories. The distribution co

Impact of Zn, Cu, Al and Fe on the partitioning and bioaccessibility of (14)C-phenanthrene in soil.

This investigation considered the effects of Zn, Cu, Al and Fe (50 and 500 mg kg(-1)) on the loss, sequential extractability, using calcium chloride (CaCl2), hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD) and dichloromethane (DCM) and biodegradation of (14)C-phenanthrene in soil over 63 d contact time. The key findings were that the presence of Cu and Al (500 mg kg(-1)) resulted in larger amounts of (14)C-phenanthrene being extracted by CaCl2 and HPCD. Further, the CaCl2 + HPCD extractions directly predicted the biodegradation of the PAH in the presence of the metals, with the exception of 500 mg kg(-1)

Comparing the desorption and biodegradation of low concentrations of phenanthrene sorbed to activated carbon, biochar and compost.

Carbonaceous soil amendments are applied to contaminated soils and sediments to strongly sorb hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) and reduce their freely dissolved concentrations. This limits biouptake and toxicity, but also biodegradation. To investigate whether HOCs sorbed to such amendments can be degraded at all, the desorption and biodegradation of low concentrations of (14)C-labelled phenanthrene (≤5 μg L(-1)) freshly sorbed to suspensions of the pure soil amendments activated carbon (AC), biochar (charcoal) and compost were compared. Firstly, the maximum abiotic desorption of phenan

Solvent-sensitive signs and magnitudes of circularly polarised luminescence and circular dichroism spectra: probing two phenanthrenes as emitters endowed with BINOL derivatives.

A C2-symmeric binaphthyl framework bearing phenanthrene as the emitter exhibited circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) in dilute solutions. The CPL and circular dichroism signs of the luminophores were altered by solvents (chloroform, methanol, acetonitrile, and dimethylformamide). DFT and TD-DFT calculations indicated that the dihedral angle between the phenanthrene and naphthyl rings was responsible for the apparent sign inversion. The role of solvent molecules in the ground and photoexcited states was discussed based on Hansen solubility parameters (δ, δd, δp and δh).

Thyroid disruption and growth inhibition of zebrafish embryos/larvae by phenanthrene treatment at environmentally relevant concentrations.

Phenanthrene induces reproductive and developmental toxicity in fish, but whether it can disrupt the thyroid hormone balance and inhibit growth had not been determined to date. In this study, zebrafish embryos were exposed to phenanthrene (0, 0.1, 1, 10 and 100 μg/L) for 7 days. The results of this experiment demonstrated that phenanthrene induced thyroid disruption and growth inhibition in zebrafish larvae. Phenanthrene significantly decreased the concentration of l-thyroxine (T4) but increased that of 3,5,3'-l-triiodothyronine (T3). The expression of genes related to the hypothalamic-pituita

Anaerobic phenanthrene biodegradation by a newly isolated sulfate-reducer, strain PheS1, and exploration of the biotransformation pathway.

Phenanthrene is a widespread and harmful polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that is difficult to anaerobically biodegrade. Current challenges in anaerobic phenanthrene bioremediation are a lack of degrading cultures and limited knowledge of biotransformation pathways. Under sulfate-reducing conditions, pure-cultures and biotransformation processes for anaerobic phenanthrene biodegradation are poorly understood. In this study, strain PheS1, which is phylogenetically closely related to Desulfotomaculum, was found to be a sulfate-reducing phenanthrene-degrading bacterium. Anaerobic phenanthrene biod

Microplastics increase the accumulation of phenanthrene in the ovaries of marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) and its transgenerational toxicity.

Microplastics (MPs) are considered to exacerbate the impacts of hydrophobic organic pollutants on aquatic organisms through the carrier function, but whether MPs affect the transgenerational toxicity of pollutants is unclear. This study exposed adult female marine medaka to phenanthrene (Phe)-adsorbed MPs for 60 days to investigate the effects of MPs on the bioaccumulation, reproductive and transgenerational toxicity of Phe. Compared to Phe alone, co-exposure to Phe and 200 μg/L MPs significantly increased Phe bioaccumulation in the intestines and ovaries. Phe alone and Phe combined with MPs d
