Insecticide susceptibility of Phlebotomus argentipes sandflies, vectors of visceral leishmaniasis in India.

OBJECTIVES: Indoor residual spraying (IRS) with insecticides is the main vector control intervention for the elimination of visceral leishmaniasis in India. After a change in IRS policy in 2015 due to widespread resistance of Phlebotomus argentipes to DDT, IRS with DDT was replaced with alpha-cypermethrin IRS in 2016. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the susceptibility of P. argentipes to DDT and its alternatives, namely malathion and pirimiphos-methyl (organophosphates); alpha-cypermethrin, deltamethrin, lambda-cyhalothrin and permethrin (pyrethroids), and bendiocarb and pro

Detection of Pyrethroid Resistance Mutations in the Major Leishmaniasis Vector Phlebotomus papatasi.

Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) are primary vectors of leishmaniasis. Greece and Turkey are both endemic for visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis and are widely affected by the disease. Measures commonly applied for controlling sand flies rely on the use of insecticides, predominantly pyrethroids. A worldwide problem associated with the intensive use of insecticides is the development of resistance. Scarce information is available regarding the resistance status in sand fly populations. Sand flies were collected from Greece (Thessaloniki, Peloponnese, Chios island) and Turkey (S

Phlebotomus sergenti a common vector of Leishmania tropica and Toscana virus in Morocco.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: An entomological study using CDC miniature light-traps was performed in El Hanchane locality, where cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) was emerging during the summer of 2011. The aim of this study is to identify the vectors of Leishmania and of phleboviruses. METHODS: In the field, a total of 643 sandfly specimens were collected, identified by morphological keys and categorized by sex and species. A total of nine distinct species were morphologically identified where seven belonged to the Phlebotomus genus and two species to the Sergentomyia genus. Phlebotomus sergenti was

Evaluation of a spray of permethrin and pyriproxyfen for the protection of dogs against Phlebotomus perniciosus.

Dogs are the main domestic reservoir of Leishmania infantum in the Old World (Leishmania chagasi in the New World) a parasite responsible for many cases of human visceral leishmaniasis in both endemic and non-endemic regions. One strategy for the control of leishmaniasis would be to prevent dogs from being bitten by sandflies, the vector of leishmaniasis. This study was designed to assess the efficacy of spraying a combination of permethrin and pyriproxyfen on to dogs artificially exposed to sandflies. Two groups of four male dogs, one of them treated and the other left untreated as controls,

Experimental transmission of Leishmania tropica to hamsters and mice by the bite of Phlebotomus sergenti.

Phlebotomus sergenti is a natural vector of Leishmania tropica. However, the ability of P. sergenti to transmit L. tropica by bite has not been proven experimentally yet. We have transmitted L. tropica to golden hamsters and BALB/c mice by the bite of P. sergenti. Sand flies and Leishmania both originated from an anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis focus in Urfa, Turkey. P. sergenti females from a laboratory colony were infected by feeding on lesions of needle-inoculated hamsters or mice. Gravid females were allowed to refeed on uninfected hosts 9-15 d after the infective feeding. At the sec

Incrimination of Phlebotomus papatasi as vector of Leishmania major in the southern Jordan Valley.

The status of sandflies as vectors of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the southern Jordan Valley was investigated during 1992. Sandflies were collected from domestic habitats and from burrows of Psammomys obesus. Of 686 Phlebotomus papatasi females collected from burrows, fourteen harboured promastigotes in their guts. On the other hand, none of 1446 P.papatasi females collected from domestic habitats were found infected. The highest infection rate (5.5%) was recorded in November at the end of the sandfly season. Six leishmanial stocks isolated from P.papatasi females were typed by cellulose acetat

An improvised method of laboratory colonization of Phlebotomus papatasi, the vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis.

A cyclic colony of P. papatasi was successfully established, using wild caught females. The major obstacle in the colonization was infestation of fungus, which was solved when bentonite, a dehydrant was mixed in the larval diet i.e., powdered and sterilized faecal pellets of rabbit. The average duration of development from egg to adult was 46.41 +/- 3.26 days. Females readily engorged on mouse, which was kept immobilized inside restrainer cages Majority of the fed females laid viable eggs, when confined in improvised styro-foam humidity chambers and survived after oviposition. In this process

Expression of Phlebotomus papatasi Salivary Protein 15 (PpSP15) in COS-7 Cells.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected tropical infection and the most prevalent vector-borne disease in Iran. There is no approved human vaccine and current treatments are restricted; some drugs are expensive and have notable side effects. Therefore, the need for the development of a safe and effective vaccine that can be produced at a low cost remains urgent. It has been shown that vaccinating animals with salivary gland homogenate or saliva components of sand flies protected against Leishmania infection. In this study, we aimed to prepare a mammalian expression vector encod

Laboratory estimation of degree-day developmental requirements of Phlebotomus papatasi (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is one of the most important vector-borne endemic diseases in Turkey. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of temperature on the developmental rates of one important vector of leishmaniasis, Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli, 1786) (Diptera: Psychodidae). Eggs from laboratory-reared colonies of Phlebotomus papatasi were exposed to six constant temperature regimes from 15 to 32 degrees C with a daylength of 14 h and relative humidity of 65-75%. No adult emergence was observed at 15 degrees C. Complete egg to adult development ranged from 27.89 +/- 1

Phlebotomus (Paraphlebotomus) gemetchi (Diptera: Psychodidae), a new sand fly species from Ethiopia.

The subgenus Paraphlebotomus of Phlebotomus includes several sand fly vectors of cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis. A new species of the subgenus Paraphlebotomus, named Phlebotomus gemetchi is described from the volcanic blisters by the shore of lake Beseka near Metahara, Upper Awash Valley, in the Rift Valley of eastern Ethiopia. The presence of one distinct character in the male genitalia (a bifurcating 'y'-shaped spine at the middle of the style) and three characters in the female (lengths of the fourth antennal and palpal segments and labrum) easily distinguish it from the other Afrotro

Rhesus monkey model for Leishmania major transmitted by Phlebotomus papatasi sandfly bites.

Leishmaniasis research needs a near-human model for investigations of natural infection processes, immunological responses and evaluation of treatments. Therefore, we developed a reproducible system using Leishmania major Yakimoff & Schokhor (Trypanosomatidae: Kinetoplastida), the cause of Old World zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL), transmitted to rhesus monkeys Macaca mulatta (Zimmerman) (Primates: Cercopithecidae) by sandfly bites of experimentally infected Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli) (Diptera: Psychodidae). Eight monkeys of presumed Indian origin (Leishmania naive) were exposed to

Phlebotomus langeroni Nitzulescu (Diptera, Psychodidae) a new vector for Leishmania infantum in Europe.

Burrows of the wild rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus, a lagomorph that has been recently suggested as a Leishmania infantum reservoir, constitute an unspoilt biotope in phlebotomine studies in Europe. We hypothesize that Phlebotomus langeroni, a proven vector of L. infantum in North Africa, is associated with rabbits and may have been overlooked in Europe. Sandfly captures were carried out with CDC light traps in an L. infantum endemic area of southern Spain with a high density of lagomorphs and a large numbers of burrows. The stable, permanent, and highly abundant presence of P. langeroni was as
