An interstellar synthesis of phosphorus oxoacids.

Phosphorus signifies an essential element in molecular biology, yet given the limited solubility of phosphates on early Earth, alternative sources like meteoritic phosphides have been proposed to incorporate phosphorus into biomolecules under prebiotic terrestrial conditions. Here, we report on a previously overlooked source of prebiotic phosphorus from interstellar phosphine (PH3) that produces key phosphorus oxoacids-phosphoric acid (H3PO4), phosphonic acid (H3PO3), and pyrophosphoric acid (H4P2O7)-in interstellar analog ices exposed to ionizing radiation at temperatures as low as 5 K. Since

Diversity of phosphorus reserves in microorganisms.

Phosphorus compounds are indispensable components of the Earth's biomass metabolized by all living organisms. Under excess of phosphorus compounds in the environment, microorganisms accumulate reserve phosphorus compounds that are used under phosphorus limitation. These compounds vary in their structure and also perform structural and regulatory functions in microbial cells. The most common phosphorus reserve in microorganism is inorganic polyphosphates, but in some archae and bacteria insoluble magnesium phosphate plays this role. Some yeasts produce phosphomannan as a phosphorus reserve. Thi

"Phosphatonins" and the regulation of phosphorus homeostasis.

Phosphate ions are critical for normal bone mineralization, and phosphate plays a vital role in a number of other biological processes such as signal transduction, nucleotide metabolism, and enzyme regulation. The study of rare disorders associated with renal phosphate wasting has resulted in the discovery of a number of proteins [fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23), secreted frizzled related protein 4 (sFRP-4), matrix extracellular phosphoglycoprotein, and FGF 7 (FGF-7)] that decrease renal sodium-dependent phosphate transport in vivo and in vitro. The "phosphatonins," FGF-23 and sFRP-4, als

Phosphorus nutrition and the treatment of osteoporosis.

Bone mineral consists of calcium phosphate, and phosphorus is as important as calcium in supporting bone augmentation and maintenance. Although typical adult diets contain abundant phosphorus, 10% to 15% of older women have intakes of less than 70% of the recommended daily allowance. When these women take high-dose calcium supplements that consist of the carbonate or citrate salts, all their food phosphorus may be bound and hence unavailable for absorption. Current-generation anabolic agents for treating osteoporosis require positive phosphorus balances of up to 90 mg/d. Attention to the nutri

The management of white phosphorus burns.

Phosphorus burns are a rarely encountered chemical burn, typically occurring in battle, industrial accidents, or from fireworks. Death may result even with minimal burn areas. Early recognition of affected areas and adequate resuscitation is crucial. Amongst our 2765 admissions between 1984 and 1998, 326 patients had chemical burns. Seven admissions were the result of phosphorus burns. Our treatment protocol comprises 1% copper sulfate solution for neutralization and identification of phosphorus particles, copious normal saline irrigation, keeping wounds moist with saline-soaked thick pads eve

Use of radioactive phosphorus in haematology.

Following the development of the cyclotron in 1932, radio-isotopes became available for use in medicine both as tracer substances and therapeutic agents. The father of nuclear medicine, Dr J. H. Lawrence, pioneered their use in a range of disease states and found that radio-isotopes were of enormous value in the diagnosis and treatment of haemopoetic disease, particularly the myeloproliferative disorders. Radioactive phosphorus 32P emerged as the radio-isotope of choice for the myelosuppressive treatment of myeloproliferative disorders. This article also describes the use of radio-isotopes in

[Magnesium and phosphorus--the forgotten electrolytes].

The clinical and pathophysiological significance and epidemiology of magnesium and phosphorus excess and deficit are discussed. In daily routine both ions largely remain "the forgotten electrolytes". With both elements deficits are clinically more important than excesses. Dietary intake, gastrointestinal and renal losses, shifts between intra- and extracellular fluid and sequestration within the extracellular compartment are the essential factors which determine body stores and the extracellular concentration of the electrolyte. The clinical signs of excess and deficit often lack specificity a

Calcium and phosphorus disturbances in children.

Calcium and phosphorus disturbances in childhood are discussed in vitamin D deficiency rickets, neonatal tetany and beta-homozygous thalassaemia. The nutritional, epidemiological, hereditary and other factors facilitating the development of the disease in these three groups of children are illustrated. The level of culture and sociability of the community must be taken into consideration for the success of the preventive medicine services, especially with regard to vitamin D deficiency rickets. The administration of phosphorus and vitamin D or metabolites of vitamin D to thalassaemic children

Disorders of Phosphorus in Critical Illness.

Disorders of phosphorus are common in critically ill horses, often occurring secondary to conditions such as endotoxemia, renal failure, or malnutrition. Phosphate imbalances can impair skeletal and cardiac muscle function, erythrocyte integrity, and bone metabolism, thereby complicating recovery. Diagnosis relies on routine biochemical testing. Treatment depends on severity: mild hypophosphatemia may be managed with oral supplementation, whereas severe cases require slow intravenous replacement with calcium monitoring. Hyperphosphatemia is addressed by promoting excretion and limiting absorpt

The refeeding syndrome. Importance of phosphorus.

Refeeding syndrome (RS) is a complex disease that occurs when nutritional support is initiated after a period of starvation. The hallmark feature is the hypophosphataemia, however other biochemical abnormalities like hypokalaemia, hypomagnesaemia, thiamine deficiency and disorder of sodium and fluid balance are common. The incidence of RS is unknown as no universally accepted definition exists, but it is frequently underdiagnosed. RS is a potentially fatal, but preventable, disorder. The identification of patients at risk is crucial to improve their management. If RS is diagnosed, there is one

[Lack of phosphorus intake and nutrition].

Since one gram of protein in food provides approximately 15 mg of phosphorus, phosphorus deficiency frequently observed in patients with protein-energy malnutrition (PEM). Chronic phosphorus deficiency in humans causes proximal myopathy. Acute hypophosphatemia may precipitate rhabdomyolysis. Plasma low phosphorus concentration suppresses erythrocyte synthesis and stores of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) , which plays an important role in the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen. Symptoms of nervous system dysfunction, such as weakness, apathy, a bedridden state, and intention tremors, are also

[Effect of phosphorus on the production of microcystin].

Effect of phosphorus on the production of microcystin was researched. The effects of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) on the growth of cells and on the production of Microcystin were studied. In addition, the efficiency of four different phosphorus compounds was researched. The results showed that microcystin increased with the increase of SRP, and c(TP) = 0.55 mg x L(-1) was the best growth concentration. When c(TP) < or = 0.55 mg x L(-1), the microcystin production increased with the increase of phosphorus concentration and was the lowest without phosphorus. Moreover, when c(TP) > 0.55 mg x

Phosphorus can also be a "photocopy".

The syntheses of benzoxaphospholes and new benzobisoxaphospholes that display blue fluorescence are presented. The latter compounds were accessed by the use of a new precursor, 2,5-diphosphinohydroquinone. The new compounds were fully characterized, including a structural study of 2,6-tert-butylbenzo[1,2-d;4,5-d']bisoxaphosphole. Quantum yields for photoluminescence were determined for a series of compounds. These materials feature bona fide P horizontal lineC p-p pi bonds suitable for conjugated materials having phosphorus as a participatory atom and can thus "photocopy" the properties of oth

The role of phosphorus in chemical evolution.

In this tutorial review we consider the role of phosphorus and its compounds within the context of chemical evolution in galaxies. Following an interdisciplinary approach we first discuss the position of P among the main biogenic elements by considering its relevance in most essential biochemical functions as well as its peculiar chemistry under different physicochemical conditions. Then we review the phosphorus distribution in different cosmic sites, such as terrestrial planets, interplanetary dust particles, cometary dust, planetary atmospheres and the interstellar medium (ISM). In this way
