Photoperiod differentially affects immune function and reproduction in collared lemmings (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus).

Many nontropical rodent species experience predictable annual variation in resource availability and environmental conditions. Individuals of many animal species engage in energetically expensive processes such as breeding during the spring and summer but bias investment toward processes that promote survival such as immune function during the winter. Generally, the suite of responses associated with the changing seasons can be induced by manipulating day length (photoperiod). Collared lemmings (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus) are arvicoline rodents that inhabit parts of northern Canada and Greenla

Effects of photoperiod and melatonin on lymphocyte activities in male broiler chickens.

Understanding the role of the pineal gland in regulating the immune response and the role of photoperiod in influencing pineal gland secretions are becoming increasingly important. The purposes of the present experiments were to investigate the effects of different photoperiod regimens on T- and B-lymphocyte activities in broiler chickens. Next, the influence of different photoperiod regimens on the responsiveness of lymphocytes to melatonin in vitro was examined. The effect of melatonin in vitro on lymphocyte activities was also studied, regardless of the photoperiod received. Finally, the ef

Photoperiodic regulation of Wnts in spermatogenesis of Brandt's vole (Lasiopodomys brandtii).

Photoperiod regulates spermatogenesis in seasonal breeders, yet its molecular mechanisms remain unclear. The Wnt signaling pathway is critical for spermatogenesis in non-seasonal breeders, but its role in photoperiodic spermatogenesis in seasonal breeders is unexplored. To investigate this, we exposed male Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii), a strict seasonal breeder, to long-photoperiod (LP, 16L:8D) and short-photoperiod (SP, 8L:16D) from the embryonic stage. Testis volume was markedly larger in LP than in SP from 4 to 10 weeks after birth. RNA-seq analysis of 151 Wnt pathway genes reveal

Photoperiodic Stress in Eggplant and Tomato: Growth Retardation and Leaf Disorders.

In controlled-environment agriculture systems, such as vertical farms, plants can be cultivated under artificial light-dark (L/D) cycles that deviate substantially from the natural 24 h photoperiod. While these regimes may enhance the growth and quality of certain crops, the physiological response is highly species-specific, and long-term implications for many crop species remain insufficiently characterized. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a shortened L/D cycle (8/4 h, repeated twice daily) on the morphology, photosynthetic activity, and redox status of eggplant (Solanum melongena

Effect of two artificial photoperiods on male domestic cat reproduction.

A thorough understanding of the effect of exogenous light could offer a natural method for reproduction manipulation in the domestic cat. The aim of this study was to describe and compare the effect of a long (LP) and a short (SP) artificial photoperiod on testicular, hormonal and seminal parameters. Male cats were housed in windowless rooms and exposed to a SP (6:18 L/D; n = 4) or a LP (16:8 L/D; n = 4) for three months. Blood and semen samples were collected at the end of the third month before castrations. Testes were gross, histologically and immunohistochemically evaluated. Serum melatoni

Negative photoperiod induces an increase in the number of ovulations in dairy cattle.

This study sought to examine the impact of negative photoperiod on the incidence of multiple ovulations and pregnancies in dairy cattle. The study population consisted of 5,373 pregnant cows in their third or greater lactation that experienced their first post-partum pregnancy after spontaneous estrus. The positive photoperiod (increasing day-length) extends from December 22 to June 21, whereas the negative photoperiod (decreasing day-length) extends from June 22 to December 21. The odds ratios (ORs) for multiple ovulations and pregnancies in cows that became pregnant during the negative photo

Maternal Photoperiodic Programming: Melatonin and Seasonal Synchronization Before Birth.

This mini-review considers the phenomenon of maternal photoperiodic programming (MPP). In order to match neonatal development to environmental conditions at the time of birth, mammals use melatonin produced by the maternal pineal gland as a transplacental signal representing ambient photoperiod. Melatonin acts via receptors in the fetal pituitary gland, exerting actions on the developing medio-basal hypothalamus. Within this structure, a central role for specialized ependymal cells known as tanycytes has emerged, linking melatonin to control of hypothalamic thyroid metabolism and in turn to pu

Circadian clock gene Per2 is not necessary for the photoperiodic response in mice.

In mammals, light information received by the eyes is transmitted to the pineal gland via the circadian pacemaker, i.e., the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Melatonin secreted by the pineal gland at night decodes night length and regulates seasonal physiology and behavior. Melatonin regulates the expression of the β-subunit of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH; Tshb) in the pars tuberalis (PT) of the pituitary gland. Long day-induced PT TSH acts on ependymal cells in the mediobasal hypothalamus to induce the expression of type 2 deiodinase (Dio2) and reduce type 3 deiodinase (Dio3) that are thyr

Effect of different photoperiods and melatonin treatment on rabbit reproductive performance.

BACKGROUND: Rabbit production in Egypt exhibits a seasonal pattern with much higher yields from September to May. This variation might be explained by reproductive performance as controlled by annual photoperiodicity. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the reproductive performance of rabbits can be improved by either increasing the photoperiod or by administering melatonin supplement. ANIMALS AND METHODS: In total 78 White New Zealand rabbits (60 does and 18 bucks) were used during September and October reared in a private Rabbitary in Menuofia Governorat

Maternal photoperiodic history affects offspring development in Syrian hamsters.

During the first 7 weeks of postnatal life, short day lengths inhibit the onset of puberty in many photoperiodic rodents, but not in Syrian hamsters. In this species, timing of puberty and fecundity are independent of the early postnatal photoperiod. Gestational day length affects postnatal reproductive development in several rodents; its role in Syrian hamsters has not been assessed. We tested the hypothesis that cumulative effects of pre- and postnatal short day lengths would restrain gonadal development in male Syrian hamsters. Males with prenatal short day exposure were generated by dams t

Origin of cerebrospinal fluid melatonin and possible function in the integration of photoperiod.

Melatonin, which is synthesized at night by the pineal gland, is present in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), but its entry site and its role in this compartment are not known. Using several approaches, we tested the hypothesis that melatonin enters the CSF through the pineal recess, an evagination of the third ventricle. CSF melatonin concentrations are higher near the pineal gland than in the anterior part of the third ventricle, and decrease markedly (80%) after sealing off the pineal recess. Moreover, ultrastructure and permeability analyses of the pineal-CSF interface showed that melatonin c

Biology of mammalian photoperiodism and the critical role of the pineal gland and melatonin.

In mammals, photoperiodic information is transformed into a melatonin secretory rhythm in the pineal gland (high levels at night, low levels during the day). Melatonin exerts its effects in discrete hypothalamic areas, most likely through MT1 melatonin receptors. Whether melatonin is brought to the hypothalamus from the cerebrospinal fluid or the blood is still unclear. The final action of this indoleamine at the level of the central nervous system is a modulation of GnRH secretion but it does not act directly on GnRH neurones; rather, its action involves a complex neural circuit of interneuro

Steroidal and photoperiodic regulation of opiate binding in male golden hamsters.

This study was designed to investigate interactions between daylength and testosterone (T) in the regulation of 3H-naloxone binding which may contribute to seasonal changes in the negative feedback and behavioral effects of androgens in the golden hamster. Photoperiod influenced opiate binding in hamsters with intact gonads only in the medial amygdala. Castration elevated specific 3H-naloxone binding in the medial amygdala, medial preoptic nucleus, bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, and in the basolateral amygdaloid nucleus of hamsters exposed to either long (14L:10D) or short (5L:19D) days.

The effect of photoperiod on plasma levels of melanin-concentrating hormone in the trout.

The neurohypophysial melanin-concentrating hormone, MCH, plays a role in adaptive colour change in teleost fishes inducing pallor when the fish is placed in pale-coloured surroundings. The present study shows that its plasma concentration, measured in groups of white-adapted fish, is not uniformly high throughout the day but follows a clear diurnal pattern. Over a 24 h cycle, plasma concentrations rise gradually during the morning to reach peak values around the middle of the photophase, after which they decline significantly before night. Lowest concentrations are observed during the dark per

Pineal gland interface between the photoperiodic environment and the endocrine system.

The photoperiodic message that the pineal gland conveys to the organism is encoded in the circadian melatonin rhythm. Melatonin is a ubiquitously acting hormone that mediates seasonal changes in reproduction in nonhuman mammals and may have reproductive consequences in humans as well. Additionally, melatonin may relate to the function o f the immune system, hormone-responsive tumor growth, circadian rhythm disturbances, and a number of other processes.

Synchronization of the circannual reproductive rhythm of the ewe by discrete photoperiodic signals.

Although many species display endogenous circannual rhythms of biological activity that are synchronized by day length, the specific photoperiodic requirements for synchronizing such rhythms are not established for any species. We tested the hypothesis that the circannual reproductive rhythm of sheep can be synchronized by exposure to just one or two discrete blocks of photoperiodic information each year. Ewes were pinealectomized to prevent their ability to transduce photoperiodic information into altered reproductive neuroendocrine activity. During the 53/4 yr following pinealectomy, specifi

Photoperiodic time measurement is maintained in undernourished lambs with delayed puberty.

Beginning at 42 weeks of age undernourished females that had been maintained outdoors were exposed to long days (15L:9D) or short days (9L:15D). After 6 weeks, both groups were placed on short days, and ad-libitum feeding was begun. Rapid 'catch-up' growth occurred similarly in both groups. However, the response to oestradiol negative feedback regulation of LH secretion differed greatly. Short-day lambs remained hyperresponsive to oestradiol inhibition, and circulating LH remained low, a condition that typifies immaturity of the system governing LH secretion. In the females exposed to the long

Retinal modulation of the hypothalamic sensitivity to testosterone feedback in photoperiodism of quail.

This experiment was performed on two groups of male Japanese quail. One had been maintained in our laboratory as a closed colony (S-group), and the other had been obtained from a commercial source (R-group). Different responses of gonadal function were found between two groups following either testosterone treatment or exposure to short days. Immature birds of these groups responded to long days with rapid gonadal growth, but after sexual maturity, exposure to short days for 3 weeks induced testicular atrophy only in S-group. Involvement of the feedback effect of androgen in the photoperiodic
