The active constituent profile in Cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L.) juice was determined by GC-MS. Quercetin and kaempferol were active components in the juice. In this study we have evaluated its potential protective effect on hepatic injury and fibrosis induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Twenty-eight rats divided into 4 groups: Group I served as control group, and Group II received weekly i.p. injection of 2 mL CCl4/kg bwt for 12 weeks. Group III were supplemented with Physalis juice via the drinking water. The animals of Group IV received Physalis juice as Group III and also were

The calyces of Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii (Chinese Lantern, JDL) are well-known as traditional Chinese medicine owing to its various therapeutic effects. However, the bioactive constituents responsible for the pharmacological effects of JDL and their metabolites in vivo are still unclear to date. In this paper, an ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC/Q-TOF-MS/MS) method was established to identify absorbed constituents and in vivo metabolites in rat biological fluids after oral administration of JDL. Based on the prop

The angiosperm calyces display considerable diversity and have adaptive functions. However, the evolutionary trajectories and underlying mechanisms of calyx morphological diversity remain unclear. In this study, ancestral state reconstruction revealed that the abscised calyx was ancestral; however, most extant angiosperms exhibited persistent calyces showing notable variation in size. Remarkably, the Solanaceae family may represent a miniature reflecting the calyx diversity of angiosperms. Distinct from Solanum and Capsicum, Physalis fruits featured a morphological novelty known as inflated ca

Physalis Calyx seu Fructus (PCF) is frequently prescribed for treating inflammation-related respiratory diseases in traditional Chinese medicine. The aim of the study is to identify the active partitions of PCF against inflammation-related respiratory diseases and explore their therapeutic effects and mechanisms. In the present study, two active partitions, 50-EFP-2 and 70-EFP, were obtained through anti-inflammatory bioactivity-guided enrichment of macroporous resin. These two partitions at 10 mg/kg potently alleviated lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated acute lung inflammation (ALI) and oval

Plants have evolved a structurally diverse chemical repertoire to mediate various environmental interactions. Yet, little is known about the chemical complexity and metabolic pathways across many plant genera. Acylsugars are a class of specialized metabolite widely distributed across the Solanaceae that play a role in deterring herbivores, insects, and fungal pathogens. Although acylsugars have been extensively characterized from leaf glandular trichomes, they have also been detected in other organs. Nevertheless, the biosynthesis, structures, and function of acylsugars outside of leaf trichom

PURPOSE: Golden berry (Physalis peruviana L.) is an exotic fruit exported from Colombia to different countries around the world. A review of the literature tends to demonstrate a hypoglycaemic effect with an improvement in insulin sensitivity after oral ingestion of fruit extracts in animal models. However, little is known about their potential effects in humans, and very little is known about the mechanisms involved. This study aimed at identifying discriminant metabolites after acute and chronic intake of golden berry.
METHOD: An untargeted metabolomics strategy using high-performance chemi

The siphonophore sub-order Cystonectae presently comprises just five species in three genera and two families, and includes Physalia physalis, the Portuguese Man O'War. Despite the smallness of the group its history has been very chequered, particularly for P. physalis, which has been described under more than fifty different names. Haeckel (1888) was one of the worst offenders regarding the description of questionable species, but even Totton (1965) was uncertain as to the validity of some previously described cystonect species. Herein, an attempt has been made to review the history of the su

It is often postulated that natural systems are expected to suffer an increasing risk of infectious disease outbreaks as climate change accelerates. In the northern Argentine Sea, the rise of ocean temperature has produced a tropicalization of demersal megafauna since 2013. This rapidly warming hotspot provides an excellent model to test whether fish parasites have increased, declined, or remained stable in the region. Cardiocephaloides physalis a parasite of penguins Spheniscus magellanicus as adult and suspected to parasitize anchovies Engraulis anchoita as larvae is here used to compare the

Studying morphological novelties offers special insights into developmental biology and evolution. The inflated calyx syndrome (ICS) is a largely unrecognized but fascinating feature of flower development, where sepals form balloon-like husks that encapsulate fruits. Despite its independent emergence in many lineages of flowering plants, the genetic and molecular mechanisms of ICS remain unknown. Early studies in the Solanaceae genus Physalis put forth key roles of MADS-box genes in ICS. However, recent work suggests these classical floral identity transcription factors were false leads. With

The aim of the present work is to investigate the potential of Physalis peruviana fruits as a hepatorenal protective agent against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced hepatic and renal fibrosis. The phytochemical screening test revealed the presence of alkaloids, free withanolides, glycowithanolides, and flavonoids. Acute toxicity study (500, 1000, and 1500 mg/kg body weight) revealed extract safety. The biological evaluation was conducted on different animal groups: control, control treated with fruit, CCl4 group, CCl4 treated with fruit, and CCl4 treated with silymarin drug. The evaluation w

Flavonoids have a pivotal cytotoxic effect against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The current study aimed to investigate which flavonoid isolated from Physalis pubescens L. leaves has the most cytotoxic effect against Hep-G2 liver cancer cells and if it could ameliorate epirubicin efficacy and safety. Baicalein trimethyl ether (BTME), rutin, quercitrin and myricitrin were isolated from Physalis Pubescens L. leaves. Hep-G2 cells were treated with the isolated flavonoids as well as a combination of BTME and epirubicin. Cell viability and the chromosomal DNA fragmentation in Hep-G2 cells were as

The role of Physalis peruviana (golden berry) as functional food against hepato-renal fibrosis induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) was evaluated. The chemical composition of leaves referred the presence of withanolides and flavonoids. Two compounds, ursolic acid and lupeol, were isolated and their structures were elucidated by different spectral analysis techniques. The biological evaluation was conducted on different animal groups; control rats, control orally treated with plant extract (500 mg/kg body weight twice a week for six consecutive weeks), CCl4 (0.5 ml/kg body weight diluted to 1

At least 100 of the approximately 9,000 species of coelenterates are dangerous to humans. The most common syndrome following an envenomation is an immediate intense dermatitis, with characteristic skin discoloration, local pain, and systemic symptoms. In this case report, we describe a case of erythema nodosum with articular manifestations following envenomation with an unknown jellyfish. Serological testing of the victim revealed marked elevation of immunoglobulins G and M directed against Physalia physalis, the Portuguese man-of-war. The patient's condition did not respond to conventional to

We have previously reported the anti-inflammatory potential and the possible underlying mechanisms of Withangulatin A (WA), which is an active component isolated from Physalis angulata L. Here, we demonstrated that WA might improve the life quality, as well as reduced the accumulation of proteinuria symptoms and levels of anti-double-stranded DNA antibodies in MRL/lpr mice. Moreover, WA could improve renal histopathologic characteristics of MRL/lpr mice. Intriguingly, expression of B cell-activating factor (BAFF), BAFF-R and related gene in the spleen were significantly reduced in 10 mg/kg WA-

Petroleum ether, dichloromethane, methanol and water extracts from 24 plants, belonging to 19 families, which are reported in the literature as traditional remedies for sleeping sickness (human African trypanosomiasis) were screened for in vitro activity against Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, as well as fro cytotoxicity for a human fibroblast cell-line (WI-38). The trypanocidal activity of the natural compounds berberine and harmane, both documented as being trypanocidal, was also evaluated. Promising trypanocidal activity with IC50 values below 10 micrograms/ml was found in 32 extracts of 13

Inflammation in the tumor microenvironment is positively correlated with cancer progression and metastasis as well as the risk of thromboembolism in lung cancer patients. Here we show, in human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines, the master inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) induced tissue factor expression and procoagulant activity, and these effects were potently inhibited by 4β-hydroxywithanolide E (4HW), a natural compound isolated from Physalis peruviana. Furthermore, combination of 4HW and TNF-α caused synergistic cytotoxicity against NSCLC cells by inducing c

The thioredoxin system plays an important role in cancer cells. Inhibiting thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) has emerged as an effective strategy to selectively target cancer cells. Withangulatin A (WA), a natural product extracted from the whole herb of Physalis angulata L. (Solanaceae), exhibits potent anticancer activity and other diverse pharmacological activities. To improve activity and targeting, we designed and prepared 41 semisynthetic analogues of WA. Biological evaluation indicated that the most promising compound 13a displayed the most significant effect on HT-29 cells (human colon canc
