High-density planting is a critical strategy for maximizing maize (Zea mays L.) yield. The ideotype for maize dense planting requires a shade-tolerant traits characterized by semi-dwarf, sturdy stems, and smart canopy structure (termed 3S traits), which collectively enhance logging resistance and light capture efficiency. However, the genetic basis of these 3S traits regulation in maize remains unclear. Here, we identify Shade-responsive MicroProtein Architecture Remodeling Target 1 (SMART1) as a pivotal regulator that enhances 3S traits, manifesting as semi-dwarf plant height, robust stems an

Plants sense light through photoreceptors to switch from skotomorphogenesis in darkness to photomorphogenesis upon light exposure. This transition is centrally governed by the CONSTITUTIVE PHOTOMORPHOGENESIS1 (COP1)/SUPPRESSOR OF PHYA-105 (SPA) E3 ubiquitin ligase complex, which targets photomorphogenesis-promoting factors like ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL5 (HY5) for degradation in darkness. This study identifies Huntingtin Yeast Partner K (HYPK) as a novel negative regulator of photomorphogenesis in Arabidopsis thaliana. HYPK functions in signaling pathways mediated by multiple photoreceptors, and its

TiO2 nanomaterials can promote plant growth and enhance disease resistance. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. This study applied TiO2 to promote the growth of wheat, soybean, tobacco, cucumber, and corn. Genetic analysis using macro-element transporter rice mutants in rice revealed that growth promotion induced by TiO2 was dependent on potassium transporter (AKT1), nitrate transporter 1.1B (NRT1.1B), ammonium transporter 1 (AMT1), and phosphate transporter 8 (PT8). TiO2 also enhanced chlorophyll accumulation, and growth promotion was inhibited in the chlorophyll biosynthesis r

We investigated the short day (SD)-induced transition to dormancy in wild-type hybrid poplar (Populus tremula x P. tremuloides) and its absence in transgenic poplar overexpressing heterologous PHYTOCHROME A (PHYA). CENTRORADIALIS-LIKE1 (CENL1), a poplar ortholog of Arabidopsis thaliana TERMINAL FLOWER1 (TFL1), was markedly downregulated in the wild-type apex coincident with SD-induced growth cessation. By contrast, poplar overexpressing a heterologous Avena sativa PHYA construct (P35S:AsPHYA), with PHYA accumulating in the rib meristem (RM) and adjacent tissues but not in the shoot apical meri

De-etiolation, which takes place when seedlings germinated in the dark are first exposed to light, involves profound morphological and physiological changes, among them the synthesis of chlorophylls from the highly reactive precursor protochlorophyllide (Pchlide). As excess Pchlide accumulation can cause cellular damage upon illumination, the entire chlorophyll synthesis pathway is subjected to tight transcriptional control. Here, we report that the activity of the class I TCP transcription factors (TCPs) TCP14 and TCP15 is required to repress genes involved in Pchlide synthesis in the dark, t

It is a challenge to spontaneously harvest multiple clean sources from the environment for upgraded energy-converting systems. The ubiquitous moisture and sunlight in nature are attractive for sustainable power generation especially. A high-performance light-coordinated "moist-electric generator" (LMEG) based on the rational combination of a polyelectrolyte and a phytochrome is herein developed. By spontaneous adsorption of gaseous water molecules and simultaneous exposure to sunlight, a piece of 1 cm2 composite film offers an open-circuit voltage of 0.92 V and a considerable short-circuit cur

Light is a major environmental stimulus that has a broad effect on organisms, triggering a cellular response that results in an optimal adaptation enhancing fitness and survival. In fungi, light affects growth, and causes diverse morphological changes such as those leading to reproduction. Light can also affect fungal metabolism, including the biosynthesis of natural products. In this study we show that in Aspergillus nidulans the effect of light on the production of the sterigmatocystin (ST) toxin depends on the glucose concentration. In cultures grown with 1% glucose and exposed to light, ST

Plants have evolved complex mechanisms to defend themselves against pathogens. It has been shown that several defense responses are influenced by light, and the red/far-red light photoreceptor phytochromes (PHY) modulate plant defense responses in Arabidopsis. Blue light receptor cryptochromes (CRY) work together with PHY to regulate many light-controlled responses, including photomorphogenesis, floral induction, and entrainment of the circadian clock. We report here that the Arabidopsis blue light photoreceptor CRY1 positively regulates inducible resistance to Pseudomonas syringae under conti

Phytochrome-interacting factors (PIFs) are a family of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors that serve as central integrators of light signaling and developmental programs. Although PIFs have been well characterized in model species, their genome-wide landscape in blueberry (Vaccinium duclouxii) and the mechanisms by which they regulate fruit ripening have not been fully explored. Here, systematic analysis of the V. duclouxii genome identified eight VcPIF genes, which were comprehensively characterized with respect to their physicochemical properties, evolutionary relationships,

Camellia sinensis cv. 'Yanlingyinbiancha' is a leaf-variegated mutant with stable genetic traits. The current study aimed to reveal the differences between its albino and green tissues, and the molecular mechanism underlying the variegation. Anatomic analysis showed the chloroplasts of albino tissues to have no intact lamellar structure. Photosynthetic pigment in albino tissues was significantly lower than that in green tissues, whereas all catechin components were more abundant in the former. Transcriptome analysis revealed most differentially expressed genes involved in the biosynthesis of p

In soybean (Glycine max (L) Merr.), the circadian clock orchestrates rhythmic molecular, metabolic, and physiological processes that determine yield potential and restrict cultivars to a narrow latitudinal range. However, the role of dynamic chromatin states in rhythmic transcription remains elusive. Here, we integrated time-series assay for transposase-accessible chromatin using sequencing, chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing, and RNA-seq to map the genome-wide circadian chromatin accessibility landscape under free-running conditions in soybean. We identified 11 core co-oscillation group

Nitric oxide (NO) is a crucial signaling molecule, playing a pivotal role in response to low-temperature (LT) stress in plants. NO mediates cold acclimation mainly via modulation of redox homeostasis, phytohormone signaling, calcium signaling, transcription factors, and other secondary messengers. This review explores the intricate dialogue between NO and various plant growth regulators. NO cross-talk with phytohormones like ethylene, abscisic acid, brassinosteroids, melatonin and salicylic acid, mitigates chilling injuries and alleviates physiological damage during LT. Secondary metabolites s

The light-harvesting complex (LHC) Ib pigment-proteins form the major component of the LHC I complex in higher plants. They comprise chlorophylls a and b, xanthophylls, and at least two polypeptide subunits of 21 and 20 kD in barley (Hordeum vulgare). We have identified two cDNA clones, LHC Ib-21 and LHC Ib-20, encoding the 21- and 20-kD LHC Ib apoproteins, respectively. N-terminal protein sequences of the purified LHC Ib polypeptides were used for the unequivocal correlation of these clones to their respective apoproteins. The cDNA clones encode two proteins that have strong sequence similari

Background: Light intensity and spectral quality are important abiotic factors that induce metabolic reprogramming in medicinal plants, thereby enabling adaptive responses to diverse radiation environments. This systematic review examines how different light conditions influence secondary metabolism, emphasizing that the observed differences can be interpreted as variations in response strategies and regulatory plasticity. Methods: Published transcriptomic and metabolomic studies on light-regulated secondary metabolism in medicinal plants were reviewed, with attention paid to light intensity,

Flower opening and closure are traits of a reproductive syndrome, as it allows pollen removal and/or pollination. Various types of opening can be distinguished such as nocturnal and diurnal and single or repetitive. Opening is generally due to cell expansion. Osmotic solute levels increase by the conversion of polysaccharides (starch or fructan) to monosaccharides, and/or the uptake of sugars from the apoplast. Repeated opening and closure movements are often brought about by differential elongation. In tulip petals, for example, the upper and lower sides of the mesophyll exhibit a 10 degrees

Plant photoreceptors are well known for their roles in light-dependent developmental processes such as photomorphogenesis, shade avoidance, and circadian regulation. These canonical functions involve light perception through specific receptors, including phytochromes and cryptochromes, and downstream transcriptional reprogramming mainly in the context of early seedling growth. Beyond their classical roles, recent studies have revealed that photoreceptors also act as integrators of diverse environmental signals, contributing to abiotic stress adaptation, root development, and vascular different

In higher plants, etioplast to chloroplast differentiation is characterized by dramatic ultrastructural changes of the plastid and a concomitant increase in chlorophylls and carotenoids. Whereas the formation and function of carotenes and their oxygenated derivatives, the xanthophylls, have been well studied, little is known about the regulation of the genes involved in xanthophyll biosynthesis. Here, we analyze the expression of three xanthophyll biosynthetic genes (i.e. beta-carotene hydroxylase [bhy], zeaxanthin epoxidase [zep], and violaxanthin de-epoxidase [vde]) during de-etiolation of s

Photoperiodic sensitivity is an essential factor that may affect agricultural practices under current climate scenarios. This study used pea (Pisum sativum) to examine effects of varying photoperiods on growth and photosynthetic parameters and then reveal the mechanistic basis of this process by linking them with tissue-specific distribution of auxin and regulation of related genes. This was achieved by transcriptome sequencing, genome-wide gene family identification, and expression pattern analysis. Best results in terms of growth and yield were obtained with a 20 h/4 h light/dark photoperiod

Wheat stem sawfly (WSS) (Cephus cinctus Norton) is a major pest of hard red spring wheat, causing significant yield losses. Genetic resistance conferred by solid stem wheat genotypes remains the most effective strategy for mitigating WSS damage. However, pith development, a key determinant of stem solidness and resistance, exhibits considerable variation among genotypes and is strongly influenced by environmental factors, particularly light quality. This study addresses the gap in understanding how light regulated molecular pathways contribute to stable and uniform pith expression. To elucidat

Seed germination, greening of etiolated plants and inhibition of hypocotyl elongation are stimulated by light, which is sensed by various types of photoreceptor. Nitric oxide (NO) has proven to be a bioactive molecule, especially in mammalian cells and, most recently, in plants. Like some phytochrome-dependent processes, many NO-mediated ones are accomplished through increases in cGMP levels. Given these similarities, we proposed that NO could take part in light-mediated events in plants. Here we show that NO promotes seed germination and de-etiolation, and inhibits hypocotyl and internode elo
