Co-isolation of Trichosporon inkin and Candida parapsilosis from a scalp white piedra case.

White piedra is a rare fungal infection of the hair shaft characterized by small, firm, irregular white-brown nodules. The infection is caused by basidiomycetous yeasts in the genus Trichosporon. We report a case of a 28-year-old female patient who acquired the infection in Qatar. In this case, the scalp was the only site affected, but infection at that site was extensive. The hair had a Saccharomyces-like yeast odor and appeared to be beaded, with light-brown nodules of varying sizes up to 2 mm long. Trichosporon sp. accompanied by Candida parapsilosis grew out along hair shafts planted in pr

A new Brevibacterium sp. isolated from infected genital hair of patients with white piedra.

A new aerobic gram-positive non-sporeforming bacillus has been isolated from infected genital hair of patients with white piedra in association with Trichosporon beigelii. This species has been characterised morphologically, nutritionally, by DNA base composition, cell-wall analysis and cellular fatty-acid profile on the basis of 14 isolates. The G+C content of DNA is 63.05 mol%. Cell walls possess meso-diaminopimelic acid (Type IV) and the sugars glucose, galactose, xylose and ribose; mycolic acids are not present. The species has a distinct colonial and microscopic morphology, is strongly pr

White piedra: fungal extracellular matrix formation and its importance in pathogenesis. An ultrastructural study.

BACKGROUND: White piedra is a disease caused by some species of the genus Trichosporon. A case of white piedra was investigated, whose molecular examination identified Cutaneotrichosporon (Trichosporon) debeurmannianum as the causative agent. METHODS: Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the affected hairs, as well as the fungal colony of C. debeurmannianum obtained from the hairs. For comparative purposes, a colony of Trichosporon mucoides obtained from a mycotheque was also examined. RESULTS: Examination of the affected hairs using SEM easily demonstrates nodules on the h

Extensive white piedra of the scalp caused by Trichosporon inkin: A case report and review of literature.

Trichosporon species cause wide varieties of fungal infections. White piedra, a superficial fungal infection on the hair shaft, is caused by Trichosporon species. We report here a case of white piedra over the scalp due to T. inkin, a rarely isolated pathogen from such a lesion. The identification of the fungus was confirmed on the basis of morphology, carbohydrate assimilation tests, and sequencing of the ITS region of rDNA. The available literature on infections due to T. inkin is also reviewed.

Experimental white piedra: a robust approach to ultrastructural analysis, scanning electron microscopy and etiological discoveries.

White piedra is a fungal infection characterized by nodules comprised of Trichosporon species and restricted to the extrafollicular portion of the hair shaft. The diagnosis is based on clinical and mycological characteristics, and must be confirmed with a precise identification of the etiological agent. This research aimed to develop an in vitro infection model of white piedra and analyze its morphological and ultra-structural aspects. In the process, hair infection was induced using eight isolates of the genus Trichosporon maintained in the Culture Collection Micoteca URM. The ITS and IGS1 re

A Rare Case of White Piedra Caused by Candida parapsilosis in the Sub-Himalayan Region of North India.

White piedra is a superficial fungal infection of the hair shaft, caused by Trichosporon, a noncandidal yeast characterized by the presence of numerous, discrete, asymptomatic nodules attached to the infected hair shafts. White piedra is considered a disease of tropical regions and occasionally reported from temperate countries. Although Candida parapsilosis such as Candida albicans is well known to cause cutaneous infections, it has been reported as a co-isolate for white piedra along with Trichosporon. We report a case of white piedra from a temperate region caused by C. parapsilosis.

Trichosporon inkin: an uncommon agent of scalp white piedra. Report of four cases in Brazilian children.

We report four cases of scalp white piedra (SWP) in Brazilian female children. Morphological and physiological approaches gave inconsistent results for identifying Trichosporon to species level, while the sequencing of the intergenic spacer 1 region of ribosomal DNA accurately identified the agent of SWP as T. inkin. These cases emphasize the occurrence of this species causing this type of infection. The molecular identification of the suspected agent is needed for appropriate epidemiological surveillance of superficial mycoses caused by Trichosporon species.

Fumando la piedra: emerging patterns of crack use among Latino immigrant day laborers in New Orleans.

The devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina have contributed to a dynamic demographic shift in the Latino composition of New Orleans. This article focuses on a particularly deleterious pattern of crack cocaine smoking associated with numerous social and health consequences. Utilizing a rapid assessment methodology, in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 52 Latino immigrant day laborers in New Orleans. Findings reveal that the presence of a flourishing drug market has facilitated and maintained patterns of crack use including initiation and periods of daily use. Moreover, feelings

White piedra and Trichosporon species in equatorial Africa. III. Identification of Trichosporon species by slide agglutination test.

Fifty-two Trichosporon strains isolated from Gabonese female patients 15-60 years, were studied. The identity of these strains was established by two different methods: the method proposed by Guého et al. (1992), based on mycological criteria, and a slide agglutination method performed with monospecific antisera prepared in our laboratory. The final results show a perfect correlation between the two methods, which allowed us to identify 25 strains of T. mucoides, 21 strains of T. inkin and seven strains of T. asahii. The results of the agglutination tests performed with 24-h-old subcultures gr

White piedra and Trichosporon species in equatorial Africa. I. History and clinical aspects: an analysis of 449 superficial inguinal specimens.

White piedra is a hair infection characterized by nodules composed of fungal elements which envelop the hair shaft. Classically, this infection was considered to be produced by an asexual yeast-like fungus, Trichosporon beigelii. At present, in accordance with studies carried out previously, this species is subdivided into six newly defined distinct species (T. asahii, T. ovoides, T. inkin, T. mucoides, T. asteroides and T. cutaneum), all belonging to the class Basidiomycetes. Although widespread, white piedra has not previously been described in tropical regions of Africa. The present study,

White piedra and Trichosporon species in equatorial Africa. II. Clinical and mycological associations: an analysis of 449 superficial inguinal specimens.

Eighty-one of 449 Gabonese female patients examined were found to be positive for genitopubic white piedra. The association with trichobacteriosis is frequent (53 cases), and mostly seen with inguinal intertrigo. Fifty-two strains belonging to the genus Trichosporon were isolated from genital hairs as well as from inguinal intertrigo lesions. These strains were identified in accordance with previously defined morphological and biochemical criteria. Three species were recognized: T. mucoides (25 strains), T. inkin (20 strains) and T. asahii (seven strains). Their macroscopic and microscopic mor

Superficial fungal infections.

Superficial fungal infections arise from a pathogen that is restricted to the stratum corneum, with little or no tissue reaction. In this Seminar, three types of infection will be covered: tinea versicolor, piedra, and tinea nigra. Tinea versicolor is common worldwide and is caused by Malassezia spp, which are human saprophytes that sometimes switch from yeast to pathogenic mycelial form. Malassezia furfur, Malassezia globosa, and Malassezia sympodialis are most closely linked to tinea versicolor. White and black piedra are both common in tropical regions of the world; white piedra is also end

A Rare Case of Phaeohyphomycosis Caused by Exophiala Jeanselmei.

An outbreak of black piedra affected 60% of inmates of a women's hostel. One of the inmates who had piedra even before joining the hostel appears to be the source of infection. Use a common comb for dressing the hair and sharing of pillows and bed sheets while sleeping were the probable factors for spread of the disease. An indigenous treatment that consisted of daily exposure of the affected hairs to steam for 20 minutes was found to be beneficial.

Mycoses in India--study in Madras.

The incidence of mycoses is high in Madras accounting for over 13% of dermatoses diagnosed in a three-year period. Dermatophytoses (tinea corporis and tinea cruris) and pityriasis versicolor were most common in May and October. A correlation was observed between these infections and environmental temperature, humidity and rainfall. Most cases of all dermatophytoses except tinea capitis were recorded between 10 and 30 years of age but the latter was most common between one and 10 years. Males were predominantly affected with all except tinea axillaris, candidiasis and piedra. The incidence of p

New records of Ornithodoros puertoricensis Fox 1947 (Ixodida: Argasidae) parasitizing humans in rural and urban dwellings, Panama.

The presence of ticks inside human constructions was evaluated in two localities from Colon province (Charco La Piedra and Espinar) and one from Panama province (Ancon, City of Panama). In two of houses, eight people from Charco La Piedra and one from Ancón reported "insect bites," which produced blisters for several weeks. The investigation resulted in the collection of argasid ticks, which were identified by morphology and sequencing the 16s ribosomal RNA gene, and later evaluated for the presence of relapsing fever Borrelia DNA. All ticks were identified as Ornithodoros puertoricensis. Whil
