Auditory discrimination training for tinnitus treatment: the effect of different paradigms.

Acoustic deprivation, i.e. hearing loss, is responsible for a cascade of processes resulting in reorganisation of the cortex. Tinnitus mechanisms are explained by synchronization of the neural spontaneous activity and might be related to cortical re-mapping. Auditory discrimination training (ADT) has demonstrated in both animals and humans to induce tonotopical changes in the auditory pathways through neural plasticity. We hypothesize that ADT could have some effect on tinnitus perception. The objective of this study is to compare the effect on tinnitus following two paradigms of ADT. Only pat

Comparison of two computer-automated procedures for tinnitus pitch matching.

Clinical assessment of the perceptual characteristics of tinnitus usually includes an attempt to match the pitch of tinnitus to a pure tone. A standardized clinical protocol for tinnitus pitch matching does not yet exist, and there is a history of unsuccessful attempts to obtain such measures reliably. The present study was designed to evaluate new protocols for identifying the perceived pitch of tinnitus, with the objectives of reducing testing time and improving test-retest reliability. Two protocols ("Octave" and "Binary") were developed, each of which was patterned after the testing proced

Hearing investigation in relation to the duration of acoustic signals.

The present study was designed to test the peculiarities of hearing perception on dependence of acoustic signal duration both in normal hearing subjects and in those with conductive and sensorineural deafness. It was found that in patients with pure conductive hearing impairment the shortest time necessary for tonal sensation of the sound signal corresponded to normal values. However, in 35 out of 63 patients investigated with cochlear deafness, it was found that the signal had to be of longer duration before pitch could be distinguished from a click.

Intensity and frequency discrimination monitored by evoked response audiometry: clinical application.

Delta 1 and delta f repetitive stimuli superimposed on continuous 0.5-, 1- and 4-kHz carrier tones were administered to 20 normally hearing persons, 8 adults with sensorineural hearing loss, 10 adults with conductive hearing loss and 22 children subjected to evoked response audiometry (ERA) for assessment of hearing acuity. The intensity modulation depth ranged from + 1 to 10 dB. In the subjects with normal hearing and in the adult patients, three carrier tone levels were used whenever possible: 20, 40, and 60 dB SL. The frequency modulation depth ranged from -1 to -10% of the carrier tone fre

Testosterone implants alter the frequency range of zebra finch songs.

To investigate whether changes in testosterone alter the frequency range in which a zebra finch produces song, we assigned male zebra finches to two groups, one of which received testosterone implants and the other empty silastic capsule implants. We then recorded songs up to 52 weeks after the surgery and measured frequency changes in the fundamental frequencies of arbitrarily chosen harmonic stacks in the songs of birds in either group. We found statistically significant decreases after 5 weeks in the songs of the testosterone-treated birds. No changes were found in the fundamental frequenci

Daily Cochlear Implant Use Predicts Pitch and Melody Perception in Adolescents With Prelingual Deafness.

PURPOSE: While speech outcomes have been extensively studied, limited evidence exists regarding how real-world auditory experience shapes music perception-particularly in adolescents with prelingual deafness. This study aimed to explore the relationship between daily cochlear implant (CI) use, long-term CI experience, and music perception abilities in adolescent CI users. METHOD: This cross-sectional study included 24 unilateral adolescent CI users and 12 age-matched peers with normal hearing (NH). Participants completed two music perception tasks: pitch direction discrimination (PDD) and mel

Tonal Tinnitus Does Not Interfere with Tone Detection at the Tinnitus Pitch-Matched Frequency.

Individuals with tinnitus hear sounds that are not present in the external environment. Whereas hearing difficulties at frequencies near those matching the tinnitus pitch are a common complaint for individuals with tinnitus, it is unclear to what extent the internal tinnitus sounds interfere with the detection of external sounds. We therefore studied whether pure-tone detection at the estimated frequency corresponding to the tinnitus pitch (ftp) was affected by confusion with the tinnitus percept. Signs of confusion would be a high false alarm rate or a shallower slope of the psychometric func

Auditory cortical change detection in adults with Asperger syndrome.

The present study investigated whether auditory deficits reported in children with Asperger syndrome (AS) are also present in adulthood. To this end, event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from adults with AS for duration, pitch, and phonetic changes in vowels, and for acoustically matched non-speech stimuli. These subjects had enhanced mismatch negativity (MMN) amplitudes particularly for pitch and duration deviants, indicating enhanced sound-discrimination abilities. Furthermore, as reflected by the P3a, their involuntary orienting was enhanced for changes in non-speech sounds, but te

Frequency-Following Responses for Objective Neurophysiological Monitoring in Pediatric Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: A Proof of Concept Case Study During Non-Invasive Neuromodulation.

Background/Objectives: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a preventable neurodevelopmental condition associated with dysfunction of fronto-subcortical networks affecting attention, executive function, and behavioral regulation. Central auditory processing difficulties frequently persist despite preserved peripheral hearing, complicating clinical evaluation when behavioral testing is limited or unreliable, and objective markers that do not depend on behavioral cooperation are therefore needed. This exploratory observational case study investigated whether Frequency-Following Responses (F

Congenital amusia persists in the developing brain after daily music listening.

Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects about 3% of the adult population. Adults experiencing this musical disorder in the absence of macroscopically visible brain injury are described as cases of congenital amusia under the assumption that the musical deficits have been present from birth. Here, we show that this disorder can be expressed in the developing brain. We found that (10-13 year-old) children exhibit a marked deficit in the detection of fine-grained pitch differences in both musical and acoustical context in comparison to their normally developing peers compa

The music perception performance of children with and without dyslexia in Taiwan.

Some Western studies have suggested a strong relation between musical discrimination abilities and reading-related skills. Music processing abilities and reading-related skills were evaluated for typically developing children and children with dyslexia. The results showed that pitch discrimination abilities of Chinese dyslexic children are not different from those of typically developing children. However, the former have poorer rhythm imitation abilities. Thus, in Chinese reading there is a strong relation between rhythm and reading acquisition, which is consistent with the research results o

A Bayesian perspective on tinnitus pitch matching.

OBJECTIVES: New tinnitus therapies are being developed and marketed that target the patient's tinnitus frequency. This frequency is estimated clinically by pitch matching, which has the patient identify the pure tone that is closest to the perceived tinnitus frequency. Though widely used, pitch matching is heavily criticized as unreliable, and the degree of reliability varies among patients. At the very least, it is recommended that multiple pitch matches be used to identify the patient's tinnitus frequency. Even so, it is not clear how many pitch matches to collect, how they should be combine

The restoration of hearing in neurofibromatosis type 2.

Central electrical stimulation of the auditory pathway can allow hearing in patients suffering from deafness localized in the auditory nerve. Developments in a multi-channel auditory brainstem implant based on the Nucleus Mini 22 Cochlear implant with transcutaneous signal transmission is discussed. The devices have been implanted in nine European patients suffering from Neurofibromatosis Type 2. Preliminary speech perception results and patient satisfaction are encouraging, and the data presented include some limited open speech recognition.

Promontory stimulation following translabyrinthine excision of acoustic neuroma with preservation of the cochlear nerve.

Promontory stimulation is an accurate method of assessing the functional integrity of the cochlear nerve by electrical stimulation. This technique is widely used in screening prospective candidates for cochlear implants. Recent reports have confirmed the integrity of cochlear nerve responses to electrical stimulation following labyrinthectomy and unsuccessful hearing preservation attempt by the retrosigmoid approach. In this report, the authors present three patients with intracanalicular acoustic neuromas excised through a translabyrinthine approach in which the cochlear nerve was preserved.

Low-frequency detection and discrimination following apical hair cell destruction.

This study assessed the effects of apical hair cell destruction on the detection and discrimination of low-frequency stimuli. Monauralized chinchillas were trained using operant conditioning and positive reinforcement to respond to pure-tone stimuli in the absence and the presence of a high-pass noise masker. Following the collection of the baseline absolute thresholds, psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) also were determined at low and high frequencies. Apical hair cells in the experimental ear of each subject then were destroyed by applying a liquid-nitrogen-cooled miniature cryoprobe to the
