Influence of bilateral cochlear implants on vocal control.

Receiving a cochlear implant (CI) can improve fundamental frequency (F0) control for deaf individuals, resulting in increased vocal pitch control. However, it is unclear whether using bilateral CIs, which often result in mismatched pitch perception between ears, will counter this benefit. To investigate this, 23 bilateral CI users were asked to produce a sustained vocalization using one CI, the other CI, both CIs, or neither. Additionally, a set of eight normal hearing participants completed the sustained vocalization task as a control group. The results indicated that F0 control is worse with

The role of vision in sensory integration models for predicting motion perception and sickness.

Users of automated vehicles will engage in other activities and take their eyes off the road, making them prone to motion sickness. To resolve this, the current paper validates models predicting sickness in response to motion and visual conditions. We validate published models of vestibular and visual sensory integration that have been used for predicting motion sickness through sensory conflict. We use naturalistic driving data and laboratory motion (and vection) paradigms, such as sinusoidal translation and rotation at different frequencies, Earth-Vertical Axis Rotation, Off-Vertical Axis Ro

Vocal Markers in the Gender Perception of Trans Women and Trans Men.

OBJECTIVE: To identify vocal gender markers in trans people, considering the relationship between gender perception and the acoustic and auditory-perceptual parameters of the voice. METHODS: Observational, cross-sectional study, approved by the Research Ethics Committee (n. 5.353.501). The judges completed auditory-perceptual judgment (APJ) and acoustic analysis of 30 transgender women and 23 transgender men, aged between 18 and 43 years, based on the production of the sustained vowel /a/ and connected speech (number counting and days of the week). The APJ was made in consensus by two judges;

Motor Influence in Developing Auditory Spatial Cognition in Hemiplegic Children with and without Visual Field Disorder.

Spatial representation is a crucial skill for everyday interaction with the environment. Different factors seem to influence spatial perception, such as body movements and vision. However, it is still unknown if motor impairment affects the building of simple spatial perception. To investigate this point, we tested hemiplegic children with (HV) and without visual field (H) disorders in an auditory and visual-spatial localization and pitch discrimination task. Fifteen hemiplegic children (nine H and six HV) and twenty with typical development took part in the experiment. The tasks consisted in

The perception of lexical tone in Mambila.

The issue of the perception of lexical tone has been addressed mainly through studies of Southeast Asian languages which feature phonological contour tones as well as level tones. Little attention has been paid to African languages which have, almost exclusively, only level tones. This paper examines tone perception in Mambila, a Benue-Congo language with four level lexical tones. A categorization experiment was run to determine some of the salient aspects of the perceptual nature of these tones. Since the four tones are well defined with respect to production, we sought to determine whether t

Linguistic effect on speech perception observed at the brainstem.

Linguistic experience affects speech perception from early infancy, as previously evidenced by behavioral and brain measures. Current research focuses on whether linguistic effects on speech perception can be observed at an earlier stage in the neural processing of speech (i.e., auditory brainstem). Brainstem responses reflect rapid, automatic, and preattentive encoding of sounds. Positive experiential effects have been reported by examining the frequency-following response (FFR) component of the complex auditory brainstem response (cABR) in response to sustained high-energy periodic portions

[An implant for stimulation of the acoustic nerve with 12 channels].

A portable hearing aid for direct stimulation of the eighth cranial nerve was developed and translated into reality. The system (Fig. 1) consists of two components, the portable transmitter and the receiver to be implanted in the mastoid. The speech signal, received in a microphone, is divided into 12 frequency bands in the transmitter (Fig. 2). The outputs are transferred via a vocoder system with pulse amplitude modulation and using a small transmitting device for signals and for energy to the receiver. The implantable receiver (Figs. 3 and 8) transfers the signals in the 12 channels into th

Altered binaural hearing in pre-ataxic and ataxic mutation carriers of spinocerebellar ataxia type 3.

Brainstem degeneration is a prominent feature of spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3), involving structures that execute binaural synchronization with microsecond precision. As a consequence, auditory processing may deteriorate during the course of disease. We tested whether the binaural "Huggins pitch" effect is suitable to study the temporal precision of brainstem functioning in SCA3 mutation carriers. We expected that they would have difficulties perceiving Huggins pitch at high frequencies, and that they would show attenuated neuromagnetic responses to Huggins pitch. The upper limit of Hug

Amateur singers' advantage in Mandarin tone perception and imitation.

Musical advantage in speech perception has been widely studied for instrumentalists, but it remains unclear whether singers share this benefit. In speech production, although singers' superiority has been observed relative to non-musicians, little is known about how they achieve this advantage. To address these gaps, this study investigated (i) whether singers outperformed non-musicians in Mandarin tone perception and imitation, (ii) whether singers' potential advantage in imitation depended on auditory feedback, and (iii) whether both groups' imitation improved across repetitions. Singers and

Cortical pitch regions in humans respond primarily to resolved harmonics and are located in specific tonotopic regions of anterior auditory cortex.

Pitch is a defining perceptual property of many real-world sounds, including music and speech. Classically, theories of pitch perception have differentiated between temporal and spectral cues. These cues are rendered distinct by the frequency resolution of the ear, such that some frequencies produce "resolved" peaks of excitation in the cochlea, whereas others are "unresolved," providing a pitch cue only via their temporal fluctuations. Despite longstanding interest, the neural structures that process pitch, and their relationship to these cues, have remained controversial. Here, using fMRI in

Comparing Three Established Methods for Tinnitus Pitch Matching With Respect to Reliability, Matching Duration, and Subjective Satisfaction.

The pitch of tinnitus sound is a key characteristic that is of importance to research and sound therapies relying on exact tinnitus pitch matches. The identification of this tinnitus pitch is a challenging task as there is no objective measurement available. During the tinnitus pitch-matching procedure, the participant identifies an external sound that is most similar to the subjective perception of the tinnitus. Several methods have been developed to perform this pitch-matching procedure with tinnitus sufferers. In this study, we aimed to compare the method of adjustment, the two-alternative

Music enjoyment with cochlear implantation.

Since the advent of cochlear implant (CI) surgery in the 1960s, there have been remarkable technological and surgical advances enabling excellent speech perception in quiet with many CI users able to use the telephone. However, many CI users struggle with music perception, particularly with the pitch-based and melodic elements of music. Yet remarkably, despite poor music perception, many CI users enjoy listening to music based on self-report questionnaires, and prospective studies have suggested a disassociation between music perception and enjoyment. Music enjoyment is arguably a more functio

Altered functional connectivity during speech perception in congenital amusia.

Individuals with congenital amusia have a lifelong history of unreliable pitch processing. Accordingly, they downweight pitch cues during speech perception and instead rely on other dimensions such as duration. We investigated the neural basis for this strategy. During fMRI, individuals with amusia (N = 15) and controls (N = 15) read sentences where a comma indicated a grammatical phrase boundary. They then heard two sentences spoken that differed only in pitch and/or duration cues and selected the best match for the written sentence. Prominent reductions in functional connectivity were detect

Music-related abilities among readers with dyslexia.

Research suggests that a central difficulty in dyslexia may be impaired rapid temporal processing. Good temporal processing is also needed for musical perception, which relies on the ability to detect rapid changes. Our study is the first to measure the perception of adults with and without dyslexia on all three dimensions of music (rhythm, pitch, and spectrum), as well as their capacity for auditory imagery and detection of slow changes, while controlling for working memory. Participants were undergraduate students, aged 20-35 years: 26 readers with dyslexia and 30 typical readers. Participan

The Falling Tone That Rolls Down the Hill and Gets Slumped: Vertical Mapping of Lexical Tones with Motion and Valence.

While a growing body of research has identified the crossmodal correspondences between nonlinguistic pitch and vertical space, little is known about the non-arbitrariness of linguistic tones within the language domain. This study investigates the vertical mappings of Cantonese lexical tones (high rising vs. low falling) in two crossmodal domains: (1) spatial motions (upward vs. downward) and (2) emotional valence (positive vs. negative). Results showed that Cantonese speakers could reliably map tones based on pitch and motion trajectories (i.e., rising contour is upward, and falling contour is

Successful lexical tone production of Mandarin Chinese autistic children with intellectual impairment.

BACKGROUND: Atypical speech prosody has been commonly found among autistic children. Yet it remains unknown whether prosody impairment originates from poor pitch ability in general or whether it is the result of the difficulty in understanding and using prosody for communicative purposes. AIMS: To investigate whether native Mandarin Chinese-speaking autistic children with intellectual impairment were able to accurately produce native lexical tones, which are pitch patterns that distinguish word meaning lexically and serve little social purpose. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Using a picture-naming ta

Consonance Perception in Congenital Amusia: Behavioral and Brain Responses to Harmonicity and Beating Cues.

Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties in the perception and production of music, including the perception of consonance and dissonance, or the judgment of certain combinations of pitches as more pleasant than others. Two perceptual cues for dissonance are inharmonicity (the lack of a common fundamental frequency between components) and beating (amplitude fluctuations produced by close, interacting frequency components). Amusic individuals have previously been reported to be insensitive to inharmonicity, but to exhibit normal sensitivity to beats. In t

Entracking as a Brain Stem Code for Pitch: The Butte Hypothesis.

The basic nature of pitch is much debated. A robust code for pitch exists in the auditory nerve in the form of an across-fiber pooled interspike interval (ISI) distribution, which resembles the stimulus autocorrelation. An unsolved question is how this representation can be "read out" by the brain. A new view is proposed in which a known brain-stem property plays a key role in the coding of periodicity, which I refer to as "entracking", a contraction of "entrained phase-locking". It is proposed that a scalar rather than vector code of periodicity exists by virtue of coincidence detectors that

Cochlear Implantation in Single-Sided Deafness and Asymmetric Hearing Loss: 12 Months Follow-up Results of a European Multicenter Evaluation.

People with single-sided deafness (SSD) or asymmetric hearing loss (AHL) have particular difficulty understanding speech in noisy listening situations and in sound localization. The objective of this multicenter study is to evaluate the effect of a cochlear implant (CI) in adults with single-sided deafness (SSD) or asymmetric hearing loss (AHL), particularly regarding sound localization and speech intelligibility with additional interest in electric-acoustic pitch matching. A prospective longitudinal study at 7 European tertiary referral centers was conducted including 19 SSD and 16 AHL subjec
