Pituitary apoplexy, a syndrome caused by haemorrhage into the pituitary gland, typically manifests as sudden severe headache, visual symptoms and hypopituitarism, including adrenal insufficiency. We report a case of a 65-year-old man with adrenal insufficiency due to pituitary apoplexy presenting with anorexia following temporal headache and diagnosed through evaluation for hyponatraemia. MRI focusing on the pituitary gland helped to confirm the diagnosis. Our experience serves as a useful reminder of this atypical presentation of pituitary apoplexy, also known as 'subclinical pituitary apople

A 7-year-old male neutered domestic short-haired cat had depression for 5 months and acute blindness. A lesion at the level of the rostral and middle cranial fossae was suspected. A large pituitary mass compressing the optic chiasm was detected in magnetic resonance images and there was also evidence of recent intratumoral hemorrhage, leading to a diagnosis of pituitary apoplexy; these findings were confirmed at postmortem examination. Pituitary apoplexy is a clinical syndrome characterized by acute neurologic signs related to hemorrhagic infarction within a pituitary tumor. Pituitary apoplexy

Classical pituitary apoplexy is a medical emergency and rapid replacement with hydrocortisone maybe life saving. It is a clinical syndrome characterized by the sudden onset of headache, vomiting, visual impairment and decreased consciousness caused by haemorrhage and/or infarction of the pituitary gland. It is associated with the sudden onset of headache accompanied or not by neurological symptoms involving the second, third, fourth and sixth cranial nerves. If diagnosed patients should be referred to a multidisciplinary team comprising, amongst others, a neurosurgeon and an endocrinologist. A

Pituitary apoplexy (PA) is a rare but potentially life-threatening event. Typically, it results from hemorrhage into a pituitary adenoma, although cases affecting the intact gland have been reported. PA may occur spontaneously or in a setting of certain diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The association of PA and contrast administration in the setting of neuroimaging have been postulated. The authors report a case of PA following coronary angiography. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this scenario has not been previously reported. Pituitary apoplexy has been recognised much more frequently since the introduction of CT and MRI scanning. Lymphocytic hypophysitis has been increasingly diagnosed in recent years. A case of pituitary apoplexy occurring in a patient with lymphocytic hypophysitis as part of a polyglandular syndrome is reported. This combination does not appear to have been previously reported. The pituitary haemorrhage was confirmed on MRI and at surgery. Lymphocytic hypophysitis was confirmed histologically. The apoplexy was accompanied by severe headache, elevation of the optic chiasm, developing field loss a

OBJECT: Pituitary adenomas occasionally undergo infarction, apoplexy, which often destroys much of the tumor. It is well known that apoplexy can be precipitated by several acute factors, including cardiac surgery, other types of surgery, trauma, insulin infusion, and stimulation with administration of hypothalamic releasing factors.
METHODS: The prior focus on mechanisms underlying pituitary apoplexy has been on these acute events. Less attention has been given to the endogenous features of pituitary tumors that make them susceptible to spontaneous infarction, despite that most pituitary apop

BACKGROUND: Pituitary apoplexy is a rare clinical emergency which results from hemorrhage or infarction in the pituitary gland.
PATIENT: We present a 14-year-old girl with pituitary apoplexy and review the literature.
RESULTS: Our patient experienced blurred vision, nausea, and headache. Her best-corrected visual acuity was 20/200 and 20/20. Confrontation test visual field testing revealed bitemporal hemianopsia. Brain imaging demonstrated a suprasellar mass. The microscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach only found 5-10 mL brownish fluid-like material. Pathology confirmed no malignancy.

Pituitary Apoplexy is a rare but sometimes life threatening condition which requires prompt recognition and timely medical intervention to avoid catastrophic consequences. From January 1979 to June 1989 and total of one hundred and ninety eight pituitary tumor patients were operated on our hospital. Eighteen cases (9.1%) were diagnosed "pituitary apoplexy" according to histopathological findings. The group consisted of twelve men and six women ranging in age from twenty two to sixty one years with a mean of forty. There were three cases of prolactin-secreting adenomas (16.7%), four growth-horm

A patient, 38-year-old man, with hemorrhage into a prolactin-secreting pituitary adenoma, or pituitary apoplexy, is reported. On his admission, clinical examinations revealed typical stigmata indicating that he suffered from an acute attack of pituitary apoplexy probably induced by acute meningitis. He survived the acute attack and recovered spontaneously without an urgent operation. Although there was no suspicious sign and symptom of hypopituitarism, the first study performed immediately after the attack suggested strongly that hypopituitarism might acutely developed during the hemorrhage in

BACKGROUND: Pituitary apoplexy associated with aneurysmal rupture is extremely rare and may be misdiagnosed as primary pituitary adenoma apoplexy. The authors present a case of a patient with pituitary apoplexy caused by rupture of an anterior cerebral artery aneurysm embedded within a giant pituitary adenoma, and they review the relevant literature.
OBSERVATIONS: A 78-year-old man experienced sudden headache with progressive vision loss. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a giant pituitary tumor with abnormal signal intensity. Magnetic resonance angiography immediately before surgery

UNLABELLED: Pituitary apoplexy represents an uncommon endocrine emergency with potentially life-threatening consequences. Drug-induced pituitary apoplexy is a rare but important consideration when evaluating patients with this presentation. We describe an unusual case of a patient with a known pituitary macroadenoma presenting with acute-onset third nerve palsy and headache secondary to tumour enlargement and apoplexy. This followed gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GNRH) agonist therapy used to treat metastatic prostate carcinoma. Following acute management, the patient underwent transphenoidal

Pituitary tumour apoplexy (PA) is a rare clinical syndrome that occurs as a result of acute haemorrhage and/or infarction within a frequently undiagnosed pituitary tumour. The sudden enlargement of the pituitary mass undergoing PA is responsible for a wide range of acute symptoms/signs (severe headache, visual loss, diplopia, hypopituitarism, impaired consciousness) which, together with the radiological evidence of a pituitary lesion, establish the diagnosis. The optimal care of PA requires involvement of a multidisciplinary team including endocrinologist, neurosurgeon, neuroophthalmologist an

Retroclival haematomas are rare entity and they are mostly caused by trauma. There has been only one case published to have a retroclival haematoma following pituitary apoplexy. We present a patient diagnosed with pituitary apoplexy who was found to have acute subdural retroclival haematoma on the MRI.

We report on a case of a 80-year-old man who developed progressive drowsiness with headache, fever and signs of meningeal irritation 2 days after a head trauma. Suspecting an infective meningoencephalitis, the patient was treated with wide spectrum antibiotic and antiviral therapy. Brain CT scan revealed a previously unknown pituitary expansive lesion. A brain MRI study confirmed the presence of an intrasellar lesion, which presented remarkable contrast ring enhancement, and showed non-specific inflammatory tissue on the clivus, possibly responsible of the clinical features of sterile meningit

A 46-year-old woman presented with hemorrhage from a non-functioning pituitary adenoma manifesting as sudden onset of severe headache. Computed tomography demonstrated diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and a suprasellar mass with intratumoral hematoma. The patient underwent transnasal transsphenoidal removal of the pituitary adenoma. This type of SAH with intratumoral hematoma simulates rupture of an anterior cerebral artery aneurysm.

The authors report an interesting case with a ruptured internal carotid artery aneurysm that presented as a sellar haematoma mimicking radiologically a pituitary adenoma, and clinically a pituitary apoplexy. A 53-year-old woman presented with a 2-week history of episodic severe headache and vomiting associated, 3 days prior to admission, with left ophthalmoparesis and transient right hemiparesis. Brain MRI showed a large intra- and suprasellar mass suggestive of a pituitary macroadenoma. Hormonal profiles showed hyperprolactinaemia and subsequent cerebral angiography demonstrated a carotid cav
