Histopathology and immunohistochemistry of tissues outside central nervous system in bovine rabies.

We performed a histopathological and immunohistochemical study of tissues outside the central nervous system in 48 cases of bovine rabies confirmed by direct immunofluorescence and/or immunohistochemistry (IHC) of the central nervous system. In the bovines of this study, mononuclear inflammation in all ganglia (trigeminal, spinal, stellate, and celiac) and adrenal medulla was observed. This injury also occurred in 85 % of neuro-pituitaries in 55 % of pars intermediate and 15 % of the pars distalis of pituitary evaluated. IHC was positive in 92.31 % of lumbar spinal ganglia, 90.9 % of trigemina

[Overlap between atypical depression, seasonal affective disorder and chronic fatigue syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: We reviewed previous studies that have described an association between abnormal functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and depression. In addition to melancholic depression, a spectrum of conditions may be associated with increased and prolonged activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. In contrast another group of states is characterized by hypoactivation of the stress system, rather than sustained activation, in which chronically reduced secretion of corticotropin releasing factor may result in pathological hypoarousal and an enhanced hypothalamic-pit

Role of catecholamine-induced activation of vagal afferent pathways in regulation of sympathoadrenal system activity: negative feedback loop of stress response.

Stress-induced activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and sympathoadrenal system is precisely regulated by well-documented negative feedback mechanisms. These include direct negative feedback effect of glucocorticoids on brain structures regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity. However, since the blood-brain-barrier is impermeable to circulating catecholamines, the role of circulating epinephrine and norepinephrine in feedback regulation of the sympathoadrenal system activity is unclear. Here we show that vagal innervation of the adrenal medulla combined with

Steroid 21-hydroxylase deficiency in congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) refers to a group of inherited genetic disorders involving deficiencies in enzymes that convert cholesterol to cortisol within the adrenal cortex. There are five key enzymes involved in the production of cortisol. Of these key enzymes, deficiency of 21-hydroxylase is the most commonly defective enzyme leading to CAH representing more than 90% of cases. The low adrenal cortisol levels associated with CAH affects the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal negative feedback system leading to increased pituitary adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) production, which over

Inflammatory Signaling in Hypertension: Regulation of Adrenal Catecholamine Biosynthesis.

The immune system is increasingly recognized for its role in the genesis and progression of hypertension. The adrenal gland is a major site that coordinates the stress response via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic-adrenal system. Catecholamines released from the adrenal medulla function in the neuro-hormonal regulation of blood pressure and have a well-established link to hypertension. The immune system has an active role in the progression of hypertension and cytokines are powerful modulators of adrenal cell function. Adrenal medullary cells integrate neural, hormon

HPA and immune axes in stress: involvement of the serotonergic system.

Chronic stress, by initiating changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the immune system, acts as a trigger for anxiety and depression. There is experimental and clinical evidence that the rise in the concentration of pro-inflammatory cytokines and glucocorticoids, which occurs in a chronically stressful situation and also in depression, contributes to the behavioural changes associated with depression. A defect in serotonergic function is associated with these hormonal and immune changes. Neurodegenerative changes in the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex and amygdalae are the frequ

Requirement of mineralocorticoid in congenital adrenal hyperplasia due to 11 beta-hydroxylase deficiency.

Marginal salt loss occurs in patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia due to 11 beta-hydroxylase (11-OHase) deficiency treated with dexamethasone and is accompanied by increased PRA. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of the stimulated renin-angiotensin system on pituitary-adrenal suppression. Seven patients with 11-OHase deficiency were subjected to a series of treatments with dexamethasone, cortisol, and combined cortisol and 9 alpha-fluorohydrocortisone. The latter combination suppressed PRA and sodium excretion, and produced better control of the pituitary-adrenal

Anterior panhypopituitarism in diffuse large B-cell stage IV lymphoma.

The most common presentation of metastases to the pituitary gland in systemic lymphoma is diabetes insipidus resulting from infiltration of the infundibulum/posterior lobe. We describe a 69-year-old man with diffuse large B-cell stage IV lymphoma who presented with anterior pituitary hypofunction, without features of posterior pituitary involvement. He presented with a few months of postural dizziness and hypotension, weight loss, fever, strabismus of right eye and a superficial abdominal wall mass. At this time he had no history of malignancy. Biochemically he had hypovolemic hyponatremia, se

Vasopressin as a target for antidepressant development: an assessment of the available evidence.

Hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is one of the key biological abnormalities described in major depressive disorder, occurring in 30-50% of depressed subjects. Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and vasopressin (AVP) are the main regulators of this stress system, with the two neuropeptides acting synergistically in bringing about adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) release from the anterior pituitary and cortisol from the adrenal gland. Based on the demonstration of elevated cerebrospinal fluid levels of CRH in depressives, and other evidence, it has been postulated that

Modeling pulsativity in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal hormonal axis.

A new mathematical model for biological rhythms in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is proposed. This model takes the form of a system of impulsive time-delay differential equations which include pulsatile release of adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) by the pituitary gland and a time delay for the release of glucocorticoid hormones by the adrenal gland. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the model's response to periodic and circadian inputs from the hypothalamus are consistent with those generated by recent models which do not include a pulsatile pituitary. In contrast the oscillator

In Vivo Investigation of the Effects of Nonylphenol on the Pituitary-Adrenal Axis and Pineal Gland in Male Rats.

The pineal gland secretes melatonin, which regulates various physiological processes; damage to this gland disrupts these functions. This study aimed to investigate the effect of nonylphenol on the pineal gland and the pituitary-adrenal axis, which is associated with this system. The study was initiated using Wistar albino male rats on their postnatal 21st day, a critical developmental stage for endocrine regulation. Nonylphenol was administered via oral gavage at doses of 5, 25 and 125 mg/kg/day, while bisphenol-A was given at 50 mg/kg/day as a positive control. At the end of the treatment pe

Neuroendocrine interactions of the stress and reproductive axes.

Reproduction is controlled by a sequential regulation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. The HPG axis integrates multiple inputs to maintain proper reproductive functions. It has long been demonstrated that stress alters fertility. Nonetheless, the central mechanisms of how stress interacts with the reproductive system are not fully understood. One of the major pathways that is activated during the stress response is the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. In this review, we discuss several aspects of the interactions between these two neuroendocrine systems to offer insigh

Effects of glucocorticoids on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in children and adults.

Inhaled and intranasal corticosteroids are widely used as effective, first-line treatments for asthma and allergic rhinitis. Despite a good safety profile of these formulations, there is increasing concern about their propensity to produce systemic adverse effects. Suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is one of the most important potential complications. This article reviews the effects of inhaled and intranasal corticosteroids on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function in adults and children.

The immune-neuroendocrine system in COVID-19, advanced age and rheumatic diseases.

• The immune-neuroendocrine system is essential to maintain homeostasis specially during stress situations. COVID-19 infection, produce stress, and activates the immune–neuroendocrine system. During the COVID-19 pandemic, multiple studies indicate that the most vulnerable populations are older adults and patients with comorbidities including autoimmune rheumatic diseases. These patients suffer from extremely important situation that favors the inflammatory hyper response due to an inadequate reaction of the immune-neuroendocrine system. This review aims to analyze the findings of the effect of

Concentrations of the adrenocorticotropic hormone, corticosterone and sex steroid hormones and the expression of the androgen receptor in the pituitary and adrenal glands of male turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) during growth and development.

Androgens take part in the regulation of puberty and promote growth and development. They play their biological role by binding to a specific androgen receptor (AR). The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of AR mRNA and protein in the pituitary and adrenal glands, to localize AR protein in luteinizing hormone (LH)-producing pituitary and adrenocortical cells, to determine plasma concentrations of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and corticosterone and the concentrations of corticosterone, testosterone (T), androstenedione (A4) and oestradiol (E2) in the adrenal glands of male t

Cushing's syndrome and acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Cushing's disease developed in a 5-year-old girl with acute lymphoblastic leukemia 18 months after her last therapeutic exposure to adrenal glucocorticosteroids. Obesity, hyperpigmentation, striae, osteoporosis, and hirsutism were accompanied by elevated levels of plasma cortisol. These showed no diurnal fluctuation and they were not suppressed by dexamethasone. At autopsy, the adrenal glands were enlarged and the pituitary gland showed increased numbers of basophils of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)/melanocyte-stimulating hormone secreting type. Leukemic infiltrates in brain tissue we

[Effect of reboxetine on activity of carboxypeptidase E in the nerve tissue of rats].

Depression is one of the most common mental disorders, but its etiology is not completely understood. It is assumed that peptidergic system components are involved in the formation of this pathology. Neuropeptides play an important role in the regulation of mental and emotional states. Сarboxypeptidase E is a key enzyme of peptide processing; it regulates neuropeptide levels in the various structures of the nervous system. We have studied effects of a single dose of reboxetine on the activity of carboxypeptidase E in various brain regions and the adrenal glands of rats. The reboxetine injectio

[Congenital defects of neurohypophysis with adrenal hypoplasia].

Congenital adrenal hypoplasia without expressive diencephalic malformation is rare. Autopsy findings in two newborn girls with hypoplasia of the neurohypophysis or aplasia of neurohypophysis combined with severe cortical adrenal hypoplasia, resp., are reported. The weight of both adrenals in the case with neurohypophyseal hypoplasia was 0,39 g, and in the case with aplasia of neurohypophysis it was 0,27 g. In both cases the adenohypophysis was poorly differentiated and the number of R and S cells was considerably reduced. In the case with aplasia of neurohypophysis, R cells were identified onl

Adrenal insufficiency: Physiology, clinical presentation and diagnostic challenges.

Adrenal insufficiency (AI) is a serious condition, which can arise from pathology affecting the adrenal gland itself (primary adrenal insufficiency, PAI), hypothalamic or pituitary pathology (secondary adrenal insufficiency, SAI), or as a result of suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitaryadrenal (HPA) axis by exogenous glucocorticoid therapy (tertiary adrenal insufficiency, TAI). AI is associated with an increase in morbidity and mortality and a reduction in quality of life. In addition, the most common cause of PAI, autoimmune adrenalitis, may be associated with a variety of other autoimmune
