Nutrient Removal and Uptake by Native Planktonic and Biofilm Bacterial Communities in an Anaerobic Aquifer.

Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) offers a collection of water storage and storage options that have been used by resource managers to mitigate the reduced availability of fresh water. One of these technologies is aquifer storage and recovery (ASR), where surface water is treated then recharged into a storage zone within an existing aquifer for later recovery and discharge into a body of water. During the storage phase of ASR, nutrient concentrations in the recharge water have been shown to decrease due, presumably via the uptake by the native aquifer microbial community. In this study, the nativ

Motility, Biofilm Formation and Antimicrobial Efflux of Sessile and Planktonic Cells of Achromobacter xylosoxidans.

Achromobacter xylosoxidans is an innately multidrug-resistant bacterium capable of forming biofilms in the respiratory tract of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. During the transition from the planktonic stage to biofilm growth, bacteria undergo a transcriptionally regulated differentiation. An isolate of A. xylosoxidans cultured from the sputum of a CF patient was separated into sessile and planktonic stages in vitro, and the transcriptomes were compared. The selected genes of interest were subsequently inactivated, and flagellar motility was found to be decisive for biofilm formation in vitro.

Impact of ultraviolet-B radiation on planktonic fish larvae: alteration of the osmoregulatory function.

Coastal marine ecosystems are submitted to variations of several abiotic and biotic parameters, some of them related to global change. Among them the ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation (UVBR: 280-320 nm) may strongly impact planktonic fish larvae. The consequences of an increase of UVBR on the osmoregulatory function of Dicentrarchus labrax larvae have been investigated in this study. In young larvae of D. labrax, as in other teleosts, osmoregulation depends on tegumentary ion transporting cells, or ionocytes, mainly located on the skin of the trunk and of the yolk sac. As early D. labrax larvae p

In vitro activity of temocillin against planktonic and sessile Burkholderia cepacia complex bacteria.

Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) bacteria are opportunistic respiratory pathogens which are particularly difficult to eradicate from the lungs of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients because of their innate resistance to antimicrobials and their capacity to form biofilms. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities of temocillin against planktonic and sessile Bcc bacteria. 37 strains belonging to 17 Bcc species were tested. 75.7% of the strains were susceptible when grown planktonically (minimal inhibitory concentration <16 μg/ml). The minimal bacter

[Rapid Detection of Planktonic Microorganism DNA in Drowning: Technology Transfer and Application Implications].

Conventional diatom-based assays for drowning diagnosis present multiple inherent limitations, including prolonged testing durations, poor adaptability to field examination, compromised detecta‑ bility in aquatic environments with low diatom abundance, and reliance on a single type of forensic evidence. To address the above limitations, our team selected drowning-relevant planktonic microorga‑ nisms, including diatoms, cyanobacteria, and planktonic bacteria, as molecular biomarkers and established a rapid planktonic microorganism DNA detection system based on real-time quantitative polymerase

The efficacy of luliconazole and caspofungin on planktonic and biofilm of Candida albicans from different sources.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The ability of Candida albicans to produce biofilm is considered an important pathogenic factor. In addition, the low sensitivity of biofilms to antifungal drugs is a challenge for patients, clinicians, and laboratory workers. We aimed to investigate the effectiveness of luliconazole and caspofungin on the planktonic and biofilm types of C. albicans strains. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty C. albicans from vaginitis, candiduria, gastrointestinal candidiasis, and saliva were examined for antifungal susceptibility against caspofungin and luliconazole using the CLSI M27 g

Photoinactivation of planktonic Cutibacterium acnes subsp. elongatum: A study on wavelength-dependent effects.

Bacterial inflammatory skin conditions, especially those caused by Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes), are among the most common skin diseases globally. While C. acnes is a gram-positive bacterium found in healthy human skin, its overgrowth or reduced phylotype diversity have been associated with inflammatory conditions such as acne vulgaris. Traditional treatments often apply antibiotics. Alternatives, like photodynamic therapy (PDT) and intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, apply visible light irradiation. These therapies utilize photosensitizers, such as coproporphyrin III (CP III), to generate r

Comparative Proteomic Analysis of Protein Patterns of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia in Biofilm and Planktonic Lifestyles.

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a clinically relevant bacterial pathogen, particularly in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. Despite the well-known ability to form biofilms inherently resistant to antibiotics and host immunity, many aspects involved in S. maltophilia biofilm formation are yet to be elucidated. In the present study, a proteomic approach was used to elucidate the differential protein expression patterns observed during the planktonic-to-biofilm transition of S. maltophilia Sm126, a strong biofilm producer causing chronic infection in a CF patient, to identify determinants potentiall

Synergistic Effect of Thymol-Ciprofloxacin Combination on Planktonic Cells and Biofilm of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic bacteria causing severe and life-threatening infections in individuals with weakened immune systems. P. aeruginosa forms antibiotic-resistant biofilms, rendering it challenging to treat; hence, alternate therapies are required to eliminate it. Treatment of infections using a combination of drugs is gaining momentum to combat drug-resistant pathogens, including P. aeruginosa. This study explores the synergistic effects of Thymol in combination with Ciprofloxacin, Amikacin and Colistin against planktonic cells and biofilm of P. aeruginosa. Thymol in com

Sex in the wild: repeated observations of planktonic ciliate conjugation from field samples.

Ciliate conjugation is considered a rare event to encounter in the field and it is mostly reported from cultures. In this work, we describe a synchronized conjugation event of planktonic ciliates that was discovered twice; in September 2019, at two different locations in the Cretan Sea, Eastern Mediterranean, and in October 2020. In 2019, first, at 2 m depth of the coastal station POSEIDON-HCB, in samples fixed with acid Lugol and formaldehyde, we found 340 and 200 mating pairs L-1of different ciliate species, respectively; and second, at the Heraklion port, we found 220 mating pairs L-1 of St

Probiotic Bacilli Inhibit Salmonella Biofilm Formation Without Killing Planktonic Cells.

Salmonellosis is a foodborne infection caused by Salmonella. Domestic poultry species are one of the main reservoirs of Salmonella, which causes the foodborne infection salmonellosis, and are responsible for many cases of animal-to-human transmission. Keeping backyard chickens is now a growing trend, increasing the frequency of direct contact with the flock and, by consequence, the incidence of Salmonella infections. Bacillus subtilis KATMIRA1933 and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens B-1895 are probiotic bacilli that produce the bacteriocins subtilosin A and subtilin, respectively. The antimicrobial

Antibacterial Effects of Phage Lysin LysGH15 on Planktonic Cells and Biofilms of Diverse Staphylococci.

Treatment of infections caused by staphylococci has become more difficult because of the emergence of multidrug-resistant strains as well as biofilm formation. In this study, we observed the ability of the phage lysin LysGH15 to eliminate staphylococcal planktonic cells and biofilms formed by Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, and Staphylococcus hominis All these strains were sensitive to LysGH15, showing reductions in bacterial counts of approximately 4 log units within 30 min after treatment with 20 μg/ml of LysGH15, and the MICs ranged from 8 μg/

The Legionella pneumophila GIG operon responds to gold and copper in planktonic and biofilm cultures.

Legionella pneumophila contaminates man-made water systems and creates numerous exposure risks for Legionnaires' Disease. Because copper/silver ionization is commonly used to control L. pneumophila, its mechanisms of metal response and detoxification are of significant interest. Here we describe an L. pneumophila operon with significant similarity to the GIG operon of Cupriavidus metallidurans. The Legionella GIG operon is present in a subset of strains and has been acquired as part of the ICE-βox 65-kB integrative conjugative element. We assessed GIG promoter activity following exposure of L.

Investigation of mercury methylation pathways in biofilm versus planktonic cultures of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans.

Biofilms can methylate mercury (Hg) at higher rates than unattached bacteria and are increasingly recognized as important Hg methylation sites in the environment. Our previous study showed that methylation rates in biofilm cultures were up to 1 order of magnitude greater than those in planktonic cultures of a sulfate-reducing bacterium. To probe whether the differential Hg methylation rates resulted from metabolic differences between these two cultures, Hg methylation assays following molybdate or chloroform inhibition (a specific inhibitor of the acetyl-CoA pathway) were conducted on biofilm
