Phytochemical characterisation and antifungal activities of five botanicals used by subsistence farmers to manage plant diseases.

Fungal phytopathogens cause many plant diseases resulting in severe crop losses. The phytochemical profiles, antioxidant and antifungal potentials of Aloe ferox, Allium cepa, Capsicum annuum, Tagetes minuta and Tulbaghia violacea extracted using acetone and methanol were investigated. Phytochemical profiling was undertaken using spectrophotometry and Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS). Antioxidant screening was done using 2,2´-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays. Antifungal effect was evaluated against Pythium ulti

Copper single-atom nanozyme with intelligent capture and photo-enhanced activity for controlling plant bacterial diseases.

Nanozymes hold promise for controlling plant bacterial diseases, but conventional ones suffer from low bacterial affinity, inefficient enzyme-like activity, and thus poor antibacterial efficacy. Here, we report a photo-enhanced copper single-atom (CuSA)-loaded ZnS@MoS2 nanozyme with high affinity and efficient peroxidase (POD)-like activity. CuSA-loaded ZnS@MoS2 exhibits higher efficacies against bacterial speck and bacterial wilt diseases in tomatoes, surpassing the commercial thiodiazole copper by 13.33% and 52.77%, respectively. Mechanistically, it catalyzes H2O2 to generate toxic hydroxyl

Novel Sulfonamide Derivatives Containing a Piperidine Moiety as New Bactericide Leads for Managing Plant Bacterial Diseases.

Plant bacterial diseases are an intractable problem due to the fact that phytopathogens have acquired strong resistances for traditional pesticides, resulting in restricting the quality and yield of agricultural products around the world. To develop new agrochemical alternatives, we prepared a novel series of sulfanilamide derivatives containing piperidine fragments and assessed their antibacterial potency. The bioassay results revealed that most molecules displayed excellent in vitro antibacterial potency towards Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) and Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (Xac).

Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Activity of Selected Medicinal Plant Leaf Extracts Against Pathogens Implicated in Poultry Diseases.

Antimicrobial resistant poultry pathogens are responsible for treatment failure and economic losses, and can also be a source of resistant zoonotic infections representing a risk to human health. In 2006 the European Union banned the use of antibiotics as growth promoters in farm animals and other regions are likely to follow suit. Alternative products and strategies are sought to help maintain animal gut health to reduce the prevalence of pathogens in the food chain. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of organic and aqueous leaf extracts of Alchornea laxiflora, Ficus exasperata, Morin

Real-time detection of plant leaf diseases based on improved YOLOv13-LM in complex field environments.

Plant leaf diseases are a major factor leading to crop yield reduction, seriously threatening food security and sustainable agricultural development. Timely and accurate detection is crucial for scientific prevention and control. Traditional manual detection is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and highly subjective. Existing deep learning detection models still have significant shortcomings in complex field scenarios, struggling to balance detection accuracy, real-time performance, and stability. They are easily affected by background interference, differences in lesion scale, and sample imbal

The Potential Use of Plant Natural Products and Plant Extracts with Antioxidant Properties for the Prevention/Treatment of Neurodegenerative Diseases: In Vitro, In Vivo and Clinical Trials.

Neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease, present a major health issue and financial burden for health care systems around the world. The impact of these diseases will further increase over the next decades due to increasing life expectancies. No cure is currently available for the treatment of these conditions; only drugs, which merely alleviate the symptoms. Oxidative stress has long been associated with neurodegeneration, whether as a cause or as part of the downstream results caused by other factors. Thus, the use of antioxida

A Large-Scale In-the-wild Dataset for Plant Disease Segmentation.

Plant diseases pose significant threats to agriculture, making proper diagnosis and effective treatment crucial for protecting crop yields. In automatic diagnosis processing, image segmentation helps to identify and localize diseases. Developing robust image segmentation models for detecting plant diseases requires high-quality annotations. Unfortunately, existing datasets rarely include segmentation labels and are typically confined to controlled laboratory settings, which fail to capture the complexity of images taken in the wild. Motivated by these, we established a large-scale segmentation

Optimized sequential model for superior classification of plant disease.

Indian agriculture is vital sector in the country's economy, providing employment and sustenance to millions of farmers. However, Plant diseases are a serious risk to crop yields and farmers' livelihoods. Traditional plant disease diagnosis methods rely heavily on human expertise, which can lead to inaccuracies due to the invisible nature of early disease symptoms and the labor-intensive process, making them inefficient for large-scale agricultural management. To recover from this and, address these challenges, this study explores deep learning, specifically Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN)

Promoting Plant-Based Therapies for Chronic Kidney Disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is debilitating, increasing in incidence worldwide, and a financial and social burden on health systems. Kidney failure, the final stage of CKD, is life-threatening if untreated with kidney replacement therapies. Current therapies using commercially-available drugs, such as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers and calcium channel blockers, generally only delay the progression of CKD. This review article focuses on effective alternative therapies to improve the prevention and treatment of CKD, using plants or plant extracts. Thr

Silica nanoparticles enhance disease resistance in Arabidopsis plants.

In plants, pathogen attack can induce an immune response known as systemic acquired resistance that protects against a broad spectrum of pathogens. In the search for safer agrochemicals, silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs; food additive E551) have recently been proposed as a new tool. However, initial results are controversial, and the molecular mechanisms of SiO2 NP-induced disease resistance are unknown. Here we show that SiO2 NPs, as well as soluble Si(OH)4, can induce systemic acquired resistance in a dose-dependent manner, which involves the defence hormone salicylic acid. Nanoparticle uptake

Screening and characterization of a chemical regulator for plant disease resistance.

Plants activate systemic acquired resistance (SAR), a form of long-lasting induced defense, to confer protection against a broad spectrum of pathogens. SAR induction is associated with the salicylic acid (SA)-mediated defense signaling networks. For detailed understandings of the SA-mediated signaling of SAR induction, we screened chemical inhibitors that block SA-mediated signaling from a 9600-compound chemical library. As a result, we identified one candidate chemical, 4-phenyl-2-{[3-(tri-fluoromethyl)anilino]methylidene}cyclohexane-1,3-dione (PAMD), that suppresses the expression of pathoge
