Seasonal patterns of canopy development and carbon gain in nineteen warm desert shrub species.

Canopy development and photosynthetic rate were measured at monthly intervals over a period of one year in 19 shrub and subshrub species of the Mojave and upper Sonoran Deserts. Thirteen of these species realized a substantial fraction of their total net carbon assimilation via twig photosynthesis. The twig contribution to whole plant yearly carbon gain reached a maximum of 83% in species such as Thamnosma montana, Salizaria mexicana, and Baccharis brachyphylla. This large contribution by twigs was due to both low levels of leaf production and the greater longevity of twig tissues. In some oth

Effect of the Phenological Stage on the Phenolic Composition, and Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Properties of Cirsium vulgare (Savi) Ten. Extracts.

Cirsium vulgare (Savi) Ten. is a plant from the Asteraceae family that is commonly used in traditional medicine. The purpose of this work was to investigate the antioxidant and antimicrobial characteristics of phenolic compounds found in ethanol and dry extracts of C. vulgare leaves, inflorescence, and roots during various phenological stages. Apigenin-7-O-glucoside and chlorogenic acid were identified in practically all C. vulgare extracts. Extracts from leaves collected at the end of the phenological dormancy period and in the first growing year had the highest antioxidant (cupric ion-reduci

Late to bed, late to rise-Warmer autumn temperatures delay spring phenology by delaying dormancy.

Spring phenology of temperate forest trees has advanced substantially over the last decades due to climate warming, but this advancement is slowing down despite continuous temperature rise. The decline in spring advancement is often attributed to winter warming, which could reduce chilling and thus delay dormancy release. However, mechanistic evidence of a phenological response to warmer winter temperatures is missing. We aimed to understand the contrasting effects of warming on plants leaf phenology and to disentangle temperature effects during different seasons. With a series of monthly expe

Imperfect detection biases occupancy estimates in plants: A review and case study.

The distributions of rare species are often estimated from presence-absence data, but undetected occurrences (imperfect detection) can lead to consequential underestimates of occupancy. Despite its standard use in animal ecology, detection probability (p) is rarely incorporated into plant occupancy estimates. Plants with cryptic life stages or traits (e.g., seed banks, dormancy) may be especially prone to periods of unobservability, resulting in imperfect detection even when a species is present. We tested the hypothesis that cryptic traits lower detection by reviewing published estimates of p

Rethinking grapevine downy mildew management: opportunities to disrupt the sexual cycle of the pathogen as a preventive disease control strategy.

Plant diseases caused by fungal and oomycete pathogens with mixed reproduction systems include some of the most damaging crop diseases. These pathogens reproduce asexually under low-stress conditions during the growing season in order to propagate rapidly and efficiently. They then shift to sexual reproduction when conditions become harsher, so as to survive and adapt. For those that are obligate biotroph pathogens with a deciduous host, sexual reproduction is a necessary step in their life cycle. Plasmopara viticola, the oomycete causing grapevine downy mildew (GDM), is a representative examp

Identification of positive and negative regulators of antiviral RNA interference in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Virus-host coevolution often drives virus immune escape. However, it remains unknown whether natural variations of plant virus resistance are enriched in genes of RNA interference (RNAi) pathway known to confer essential antiviral defense in plants. Here, we report two genome-wide association study screens to interrogate natural variation among wild-collected Arabidopsis thaliana accessions in quantitative resistance to the endemic cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). We demonstrate that the highest-ranked gene significantly associated with resistance from both screens acts to regulate antiviral RNAi

The Significance of Hydrogen Sulfide for Arabidopsis Seed Germination.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) recently emerged as an important gaseous signaling molecule in plants. In this study, we investigated the possible functions of H2S in regulating Arabidopsis seed germination. NaHS treatments delayed seed germination in a dose-dependent manner and were ineffective in releasing seed dormancy. Interestingly, endogenous H2S content was enhanced in germinating seeds. This increase was correlated with higher activity of three enzymes (L-cysteine desulfhydrase, D-cysteine desulfhydrase, and β-cyanoalanine synthase) known as sources of H2S in plants. The H2S scavenger hypotauri

Localization and Biological Activities of Bioflavonoids from Taxus canadensis Marshall.

Relict yew plants (Taxus L.) are not only ornamental plants with valuable wood but also have the ability to synthesize the unique compound taxol, which is successfully used in the treatment of cancer due to its powerful cytotoxic effect. Due to the presence of taxol, all parts of yew plants are extremely poisonous, but there have been cases where animals have eaten yew cones without fatal consequences. The biosynthesis of taxol is carried out due to the interaction of the isoprenoid and phenolic pathways of the secondary metabolism of plants. Despite the close attention of researchers to the p

Annotation survey and life cycle transcriptomics of transcription factors in rust fungi (Pucciniales) identify a possible role for cold shock proteins in dormancy exit.

Fungi of the order Pucciniales are obligate plant biotrophs causing rust diseases. They exhibit a complex life cycle with the production of up to five spore types, infection of two unrelated hosts and an overwintering stage. Transcription factors (TFs) are key regulators of gene expression in eukaryote cells. In order to better understand genetic programs expressed during major transitions of the rust life cycle, we surveyed the complement of TFs in fungal genomes with an emphasis on Pucciniales. We found that despite their large gene numbers, rust genomes have a reduced repertoire of TFs comp

The Pseudoenzyme β-Amylase9 From Arabidopsis Activates α-Amylase3: A Possible Mechanism to Promote Stress-Induced Starch Degradation.

Starch accumulation in plants provides carbon for nighttime use, for regrowth after periods of dormancy, and for times of stress. Both ɑ- and β-amylases (AMYs and BAMs, respectively) catalyze starch hydrolysis, but their functional roles are unclear. Moreover, the presence of catalytically inactive amylases that show starch excess phenotypes when deleted presents questions on how starch degradation is regulated. Plants lacking one of these catalytically inactive β-amylases, BAM9, have enhanced starch accumulation when combined with mutations in BAM1 and BAM3, the primary starch degrading BAMs

DiZF-C3H1, a zinc finger transcription factor from the dove tree (Davidia involucrata Baill.), plays a negative role in seed development and plant growth in Arabidopsis and tobacco.

Low seed fertility seriously limits the survival and adaption of rare plant species. Here, we identified a seed-specific gene, DiZF-C3H1, from the dove tree and verified its function. Overexpression of DiZF-C3H1 caused retarded root development, delayed anthesis, abnormal floral organs, and deformed siliques in transgenic Arabidopsis lines. No offspring were obtained in transgenic Arabidopsis lines due to serious seed abortion. Therefore, we performed further verification in tobacco. Similarly, overexpression of DiZF-C3H1 retarded root development and reduced berry size and seed yield in trans

Predicting Forest Tree Leaf Phenology Under Climate Change Using Satellite Monitoring and Population-Based Genomic Trait Association.

Leaf phenology, a critical determinant of plant fitness and ecosystem function, is undergoing rapid shifts due to global climate change, yet its complex genetic and environmental drivers remain incompletely understood. Understanding the genetic basis of phenological adaptation is crucial for forecasting forest responses to a changing climate. Here, we integrate multi-year satellite-derived phenology from 46 Fagus sylvatica (European beech) populations across Germany with a population-based genome-wide association study to dissect the environmental and genetic drivers of leaf-out day (LOD) and

Timing of photoperiodic competency causes phenological mismatch in balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera L.).

Plant phenology is expected to be sensitive to climate warming. In boreal trees, spring flush is primarily temperature driven, whereas height growth cessation and autumn leaf senescence are predominantly controlled by photoperiod. Cuttings of 525 genotypes from the full range of balsam poplar were planted into two common gardens (Vancouver and Indian Head, Canada) at similar latitudes, but with differing winter temperatures and growing seasons. There was clinal variation in spring and, particularly, summer and fall phenology. Bud flush and, despite milder climate, bud set and leaf drop were ea

Himalayan orogeny and monsoon intensification explain species diversification in an endemic ginger (Hedychium: Zingiberaceae) from the Indo-Malayan Realm.

The Indo-Malayan Realm is a biogeographic realm that extends from the Indian Subcontinent to the islands of Southeast Asia (Malay Archipelago). Despite being megadiverse, evolutionary hypotheses explaining taxonomic diversity in this region have been rare. Here, we investigate the role of geoclimatic events such as Himalayan orogeny and monsoon intensification in the diversification of the ginger-lilies (Hedychium J.Koenig: Zingiberaceae). We first built a comprehensive, time-calibrated phylogeny of Hedychium with 75% taxonomic and geographic sampling. We found that Hedychium is a very young l

Beyond Seeds and Fruits: Water-Impermeability in Sporocarps of Marsilea minuta (Marsileaceae) Expands the Taxonomic Limits of Physical Dormancy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Occurrence of physical dormancy (PY) is thought to be limited to members of 18 angiosperm families belonging to 10 orders and is caused by a water-impermeable palisade cell layer(s) in seed or fruit coats. PY has not been reported in seeds of gymnosperms or in reproductive structures of non-seed plants. Sporocarps of the heterosporous fern family Marsileaceae are functionally analogous to seeds of angiosperms, and anatomy of the sporocarp wall and requirement of scarification to release spores suggest possible occurrence of PY. The primary aims of this study were to confir

Dispersal ability of seed morphs predicts germination sensitivity to competition cues in a heterocarpic plant.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Seed germination is often regulated by cues that indicate future competitive conditions, and such cues have been shown to either accelerate or suspend germination across species. However, much less is known about how these responses might vary within species, particularly in plants that produce seeds with different dispersal abilities. In seed-heteromorphic species, dispersing and non-dispersing seed morphs may differ in their likelihood of encountering kin competition, potentially selecting for contrasting germination strategies. METHODS: We studied the effect of light c

Modelling Xylella fastidiosa Infection Dynamics in Grapevines: A Physiologically Based Approach.

Xylella fastidiosa subsp. fastidiosa (Xff), the causal agent of Pierce's Disease (PD) in grapevine, is a major threat to global viticulture. However, the mechanisms governing infection establishment, persistence, and recovery within grapevine hosts remain insufficiently characterized. We developed a novel physiologically based infection model that explicitly describes the population dynamics and within-plant spread of Xff in grapevine plants as a function of temperature and host phenology. Grapevines are represented as structured hosts composed of two interacting compartments: permanent woody

Abscisic acid-induced gene expression in the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha is mediated by evolutionarily conserved promoter elements.

Abscisic acid (ABA) is a phytohormone widely distributed among members of the land plant lineage (Embryophyta), regulating dormancy, stomata closure and tolerance to environmental stresses. In angiosperms (Magnoliophyta), ABA-induced gene expression is mediated by promoter elements such as the G-box-like ACGT-core motifs recognized by bZIP transcription factors. In contrast, the mode of regulation by ABA of gene expression in liverworts (Marchantiophyta), representing one of the earliest diverging land plant groups, has not been elucidated. In this study, we used promoters of the liverwort Mar

Bridging sugar metabolism and signaling with hormones in shoot branching regulation.

Shoot branching, a major determinant of plant architecture and productivity, has long been attributed to the coordinated action of auxin, cytokinins (CKs), and strigolactones (SLs). Recent work shows that sugars act not only as metabolic resources but also as early developmental signals that regulate axillary bud outgrowth, the initial step in shoot branching. Sugar availability can rapidly trigger bud outgrowth, often preceding major hormonal changes. Mechanistically, sugars antagonize auxin and SL signaling while acting synergistically with CKs. These effects involve sugar signaling pathways
